President Obama has written a letter to Michael Jackson's family, an Obama adviser said Sunday morning.

(CNN) - President Barack Obama has written to the family of Michael Jackson rather than making a public statement, his senior adviser said Sunday.

Appearing on the NBC program "Meet the Press," Obama adviser David Axelrod said Obama believes Jackson was "an important and magnificent performer" who made an undeniable impact on music and entertainment.

Asked why Obama had yet to speak publicly about Jackson's sudden death last week at age 50, Axelrod said: "The president has written the family and has shared his feelings with the family."

"He felt that was the appropriate way to go," Axelrod said.

The whole country is coming apart and we are spending huge amounts of time discussing the life and times of Jackson.....

Show us what we find most important in this country now..

Obama may have written the Jackson family, but just be CERTAIN that he writes No More Letters to IRAN and North Korea.

Stock Footage – It's because Obama thinks he's better than Michael Jackson. He thinks he's the biggest "black star" right now and he's jealous. That's why he's not releasing a press statement. ----------–
First off he is not a "black star" he the President of the United States, leader of the Free World! Secondly, I love when people "think" and I use that term loosely they know what another human is thinking or feeling! Thirdly to compare Princess Diana and Michael Jackson is apples and oranges! Michael is the greatest entertainer the world will ever know, Princess Diana was a Royal from a friendly country, she did great works, her's if you remember was a STATE Funeral, she was still considered part of the Royal family. Get a grip!

Tina   June 28th, 2009 2:07 pm ET

For those of you complaining about all of the coverage of MJ's death, and the media completely ignorning Farrah and Ed, MJ was a bigger star than Farrah and Ed combined, so of course the media is going to focus on the bigger star.

The death of MJ is a story that the media can milk for days. The death of Farrah and Ed are not.

Remember, the media has to have something to fill their 24 hour news cycle. The death of MJ provides a story that can be addressed from a number of issues which gives the media plenty of material to fill their 24 hour news cycle.

Stock Footage   June 28th, 2009 1:38 pm ET

It's because Obama thinks he's better than Michael Jackson. He thinks he's the biggest "black star" right now and he's jealous. That's why he's not releasing a press statement. I mean when Diana died Bill Clinton gave a statement on TV. Are you telling me that Michael Jackson is not as big as Diana? He definitely had a personal and emotional connection to people perhaps more so than Diana had. Saying that he's busy is no excuse.

He should release a press statement to respect the fans. Even though a letter to the family is nice.

Georgia Peach   June 28th, 2009 1:36 pm ET

For all those making this a racial issue, not knowing for sure if he wrote letters of sympathy for Ed & Farrah...How many Whites sent President Obama a letter of condolescenses when his White Grandmother died? Hmm, lets ask McCain/Palin if they sent flowers.

Is Billy Mays Family getting a letter from Obama?

Wow,people are stupid.   June 28th, 2009 1:09 pm ET

I swear, the President cannot win with anyone. Always someone out there who wants to tear him down. Some are mad that an official statement wasn't written for MJ. Some are mad, that he didn't write one for Ed McMahon and Farrah Fawcett. Some are mad that he even wrote a statement. If he didn't write one,y'all would criticize that. I swear, you are fickle jacka$$es. I am a fan of Mike, and what President Obama did for him was beyond the least he could do. I also think that Farrah Fawcett and Ed McMahon are very sad,but whether or not the President comments on them really doesn't matter. Im sure,if asked about them both, that he would say that it is sad that they are both gone, but it isn't compulsory that he does comment. Oh,and to the Republican/Conservative smarta$$es,did President Bush give condolences to James Brown,or how about Luther Vandross,or Ray Charles,or Richard Pryor,or whoever else died between January 2001-January 2009. Thats a hell of a lot of condolences unaccounted for?

Al   June 28th, 2009 1:07 pm ET

You Michael Jackson and Obama haters are killing me.

Now, let's deal with Farrah and Ed....bless both of them and their families during this time. But Michael Jackson professional accomplishments engulfs them in their respected fields. Not even close. Where's the global candlelight memorials for Ed and Farrah –the impact of Michael's life is undeniable. Most of you that are trying to bash him even in death probably have shook your crappy rumps to his music at one point in your life. And you are even more saddened that your poison did not affect your children. More than likely they love Michael and are grieving with the rest of that recognize a once-in-a-lifetime talent.

As for President Obama, double get over it. He's going to win in an even bigger landslide in 2012! The guy is the man of this era. No other president could have handled the many distresses that this country faced. He's young, smart, good looking, a great statesman and get this, THE PEOPLE'S CHOICE! So, go and throw up some place and GET OVER IT!

Steve   June 28th, 2009 1:04 pm ET

I find some of these comments very interesting and many of them racist, if not blatantly ignorant. Someone on here claimed that he was a pedophile and that the proof was in his paying off the kids parents. Here is my retort back to you. Any parent willing to accept any amount of money to end proceedings against someone who may have had sex with your child is in my opinion a worthless parent and prove to me that it was all about money. I could in NO WAY accept anything less than jail for some one who molested my child. Any lawyer will tell you that the law believes children the majority of the time when a kid claims molestation, even if it isn't true. It is very hard to disprove, especially when a parent is making the child lie. To end the suit against Jackson his lawyers told him to pay the mother off so it would go away because there was no certainty of a win even if he was innocent. You can choose to believe who you want to believe and yes Michael set himself up as a target for these law suites but I don't believe for one minute the man did anything given the manner in which these families handled it. But the stupidity falls on Jackson for sure. But to the gist of this questions I find Obama to be right on in most of his handling of people. He understands what is and is not appropriate and that there is an etiquette to handling situations and one is not to make yourself look good while trying to praise someone else. Good job President Obama

I think it's kind of sick that we're worried about this guy dying when there are about 150,000 American citizens overseas right now, putting their lives on the line for people who don't care about them.

I think that was an appropriate thing to do. Michael Jackson was such an incredibly handsome young man at the Motown 25 Celebration performing Billie Jean. It is heartbreaking that he was unable to see that himself. I hope his soul has found the eternal peace that he was unable to find in this life. RIP Michael. Your bright light will continue to shine.

i think mj was a pervert. he costantly grabbed his genitals while twirling like a ballerina, he screamed/sang like a hysterical teenager and knowingly shared beds w/ kids (20/20)
he wanted to be white so therefore no black person should moan him now....
our president should stick with politics not the entertainment world and as for poor farrah............what a shame to die the same day as a freak and be upstaged,
all i know, it's a sad america/world, where people idolize pedephiles and presidents send letters to their families, but yet almost overlook real celebreties like ed mcmahon and farrah.
Hell who knows maybe a admitted pedophile can become a President one day....seems like everyone is open to everything these day!??? I know for sure I hate pedophiles and it is sad for my president to even make a statement and even consider a letter to the family........what about the victims? He must not need their votes........

This WILL NOT BE a direct quote (for all of you who are well-versed in the Bible); however, those of you throughout this United States and the World who are without SIN, please cast the first stone.

The adorable young man, who was the most beautiful afro-american child, subjected himself to the world's image of what he "Should Look Like" in order to be accepted around the world. We all know that a "white man or women" is readily embraced throughout the world before a person of color is even recognized –this lack of recognition toward african-americans (male or female) can happen in your neighborhood store. To every last one of you who read and writes these comments, please examine the source of your bitterness; there is not one of you who would not benefit from some form of psychiatric counseling. I use these open forums as educational tools to introduce my children to the varying views of this country so that they are well rounded and open to always look deeper at the human being that rejects you and after doing so, asked that individual where their source of bitterness comes from. Thank you CNN for providing me the opportunity to express my timeless "human agenda" - THOSE OF US WITHOUT SIN, PLEASE CAST THE FIRST STONE.

President and Mrs. Obama, thank you for writing a personal note, anything less or greater than would not have been genuinely humane.

MoJo   June 28th, 2009 12:28 pm ET

Vote buying at its best. Anyone blogging on here who thinks MJ was not a pedophile, ask yourself this question. Would you pay upwards of $20 million to anyone who accused you of molestation if you werre innocent. An innocent man would call his lawyer and report it to the police.

Only in America would the President offer condolences in the death of a pedophile and drug addict. We should all be proud!

Gina   June 28th, 2009 12:26 pm ET

it once again proves that you'll go to great lengths to "cover," or "cloak," obama's socialist agenda. While the dems are busy crucifying our economy with wasteful spending, you know...the news we really need to know about so we can make calls, etc....Instead you're covering gossip stories; Sanford's affair, Michael Jackson's death....what a ruse, what a coverup. It's a shame the US can't have a second trustworthy news source; CNN has such an outreach, yet they continue to pander highly to the left; perhap getting some stim money?

"As for MJ, how ironic that the black community wants to hail a tormented man who wanted more than anything else not to be black."

then you know little about the black community. Walk into any low rent drug store and you will find shelf after shelf full of skin bleaching creams. Black have been raised in a Country that has told them that the lighter their skin the more attractive they are. The black community understands the tragic.. so very tragic... shame of race that MJ craved into his face. American culture has not been kind to dark skin blacks. You think the black community blames MJ for that side of his torment?

NC Paralegal   June 28th, 2009 12:07 pm ET

I just have to say this, I have held my tongue for too long.. Michael Jackson was NEVER convicted of Child Molestation NEVER. It was proven by others and the courts that he was being extorted by the accusers. Why are we not talking about that.? The public felt as though it made MJ and when he did not do what WE as the public wanted we turned against him and we used the media to do it. When the lies became the truth we printed them over and over again. As for Obama writing a letter to his family, that was the correct thing to do and I am certain that he wrote to the others. Some are upset that MJ is getting more TV time than Farrah and Ed ; however we were not expecting MJ to die this was news.

Now for those who say Obama can do nothing right or does not understand should say what they mean. What they are saying is that Black Guy or the N word has no business being in the White House. Obama understands that a black man can rise up and become the POTUS and he understand very well how to do it. Obama was raised and trained for this job all his life and many others can not say that. I am proud of the Obamas and for all who voted form him.

Reality check for all you uninformed, lib taught, pseudo-philospher, zombie types posting accolades & well wishes along with pot-shot commentary about the GOP, conservatives, Neo-Cons,......and blah, blah, blah, blah -

"This is an issue in which we all can agree upon"!

Unfortunately, the Lib "teen angst"/"perpetual pubecent" mindset never fails to shut-up and relax; therefore it must be heckled/needled at all cost – especially when this (non) issue is sooo celebrated by the drone-set which is ripe(begging)for parody and partison ridicule.

Yesterday, a House bill was passed which will further our economic stupor for all Americans regardless of party affiliation! And yet you blindlessly continue to fall in line like sheep to the slaughter and worship your executioner when he does so much as pass a note!!

Unreal.

Jackie   June 28th, 2009 12:03 pm ET

The US didn't lose Michael Jackson they attacked him and forced him out of the US. We still hear racial hate by the GOP, Law Makers, Media and Press against Michael even in his death. President Obama like the rest of those who really cared about Michael lost a friend. We see how the Media is milking this for as much as possible including never letting us forget Michael was charged and found innocent on all counts of molestation. Notice how nothing is said about Mark Foley who continues to molest kids and never was charged even when he admitted his acts. Michael couldn't destroy the racial hate in America and never will Obama. With the help of the Media, Press, Republican Party and it's leader Rush Limbaugh they will hold to the rule of the KKK. Interesting how a young lawyer name Roberts who worked for President Reagan even hated Michael Jackson as Reagan and Nancy admired him. Well now Roberts is called Chief Justice Roberts and you can bet the World would never show him the Love Michael has around the World. Michael lived to help others like Ryan White and even the children of the World but Satan's workers in the US did everything they could to bring him down. Now the Media and the hate groups will move on to destroy Michael's kids the way they did him. Michael's Family will fight over his money and more lies will come out from those trying to make a quick buck. But for Michael Jackson's true fans he will be remembered long after all of us are gone and even till the end of time. Like other black artist the US kicked out such as Josephine Baker and Tina Turna we always say their Americans after their die but during their lives their just black people.

Ken in NC   June 28th, 2009 12:03 pm ET

I voted for and supported President Obama and did so with the full knowledge that I was not going to agree with his every decision. I understood too that much of America was in the same position as I, however, I have never seen so many people that think or feel that the President has to do as they think or feel or he is wrong.

Citizens of the USA. You must come to the understanding that often times when the President makes decisions, he is making them with knowledge we are not privy to. Often times when he makes decisions he is looking further down the road than we are and sometimes he follows his heart and there is nothing you can say or do to justify him following your desires when he makes a decision from his heart.

Now people were not as vocal against Presidents Bush 41 or 43 or President Clinton or Regan but with this President many of you feel that he must get your approval to do many of the things he does or does not do. Well, you are sadly mistaken. This man is just as much a President as any other President and it’s high time you stop acting like little children throwing a temper tantrum and act like Americans and work to better this nation. Now cut the crap and start acting like grown ups.

Bea   June 28th, 2009 12:02 pm ET

@ the person who says the President should write a letter to the families of the molested...what the $%^#? I underestimated the ignorance of some people. No one has any proof Michael did the things he was accused of but the holier than though group is so quick to judge as if they have an automatic ticket to heaven.
Rest in peace Michael Jackson and thank you President Obama for not making a public statement. The G.O.P would have accused you of trying to overshadow the superstar...you know how they do...

Chenna Benna   June 28th, 2009 12:01 pm ET

Some of the comments on this matter are just ignorant. Of course the President is going to issue a statement to Michael's family. Michael Jackson was only the most famous person on this planet. Didn't matter were you go, everyone knows who he was and what he did. Also, Jackson was a transformational artist in that he broke the racial barriers by being the first African American to have their video played on MTV and he influence so many musicians today, of all races. Without Mike, there would be no Justin Timberlake, Usher, Chris Brown, Ne-Yo, Britney Spears, Beyonce, any American Idol, or any other pop or R&B star we currently have. Michael Jackson set the very high bar of excellence that every up and coming music star tries to achieve, but sadly I don't think another person will ever be able to reach. RIP Mike!

lila   June 28th, 2009 12:01 pm ET

I think it is appropriate for the potus to acknowledge MJ as an artist and performer. MJ's significance on that level is undeniable. I also think it is appropriate that the potus made the choice not to praise MJ on a personal level. As a person MJ was a highly disturbed man.

Old White Virginia Female   June 28th, 2009 12:00 pm ET

I am more than a little perplexed that our President who is a jazz enthusiast, supposedly, and loves music could not bring himself to offer condolences to the family or comment publicly about the loss to the music world immediately upon Michael Jackson's passing. I find it extremely hypocritical that our country can accept Bill Clinton, a former President, for the unacceptable behavior he did while President and our current President can align himself with both Clinton and his wife politically and we will condemn a man who was never convicted of anything. I personally do not care anything about Michael Jackson's personal life, the way his face looks, what he does off the stage. When asked recently who I would wanted to see perform before I die, I chose Michael Jackson and it breaks my heart that I will never have that chance. He is and I feel quite certain will be the greatest musician who has lived during my 64 years. I am just so sad that now I cry when I hear his music that has always inspired me to do my best house cleaning, best workouts, and brought a smile to my face whenever his songs began.

Obama, Ryan and Redmond O'Neal and Ed McMahon's family are awaiting your letters.

When the press tore apart Elvis they were doing their jobs – if they did it to Jackson it would be called racist. Now ask yourselves – who is racist?

And for those of you that don't believe Jackson molested children (cause hey how can we believe little kids, right?) put your head back up your behind, we really don't need you.

ImaLindatoo   June 28th, 2009 11:52 am ET

You mean after Obama's public statment made went soooo bad, they decided instead of apologizing in public....a gain, he would apologize to the family directly.

I guess a little jealousy has peaked out of Obama. After all, MJ WAS the man who broke racial barriers so many decades ago. Obama just likes to be the front man and pretend he did something close to accomplishments. Obama merely plalyed the race card and got elected on that.

"When asked about the singer at Friday's regular White House briefing, Mr Gibbs said: "I think everybody remembers hearing his songs, watching him moonwalk on television during Motown's 25th anniversary."

"The president also said that he had aspects of his life that were sad and tragic, his condolences went out to the Jackson family and fans that mourned his loss."

sounds like a public statement to me.

girlsouth   June 28th, 2009 11:51 am ET

As a former Southern Californian, I can say with certainty that if that jury from Santa Barbara (a predominately white, affluent community) felt there was any truth to the allegations Jackson faced, he would NOT have walked out of that courtroom a free man.
As sad as this statement is, the demographics alone speak volumes.

It is unfortunate that the passing of the other 'cultural icons' occurred that same week (and in Fawcett's case, same day), but it shouldn't suggest our President has a responsibility to write the survivors of every celebrity that passes during his term.

Many of us will remember all of them; but nearly everyone (over the age of ten) will never forget Michael.

OBSERVER   June 28th, 2009 11:49 am ET

It is sad when anyone dies. We have seen three well knoown people die this week. Jackson was only the most well known of the three and has attrracted a lot of comments and as I read down the blog not all of them nice. The fact that Obama send his thoughts to the family is only natural. The fact that he does not send a letter to everyone that dies is only understandable unless you are just looking forf sonething to evil to say.

The worl of music and videos has been changed because of Michael Jackson. We should try to remember the good and let teh aspects of his life that were not so insired rest with his bones.

Doesn't have their phone number? Hello, he's the President.

Glad everyone thinks this makes him such a stellar, class act - he wrote a fan letter. Seriously – this guy is nothing more than an obsequious gherm.

As for MJ, how ironic that the black community wants to hail a tormented man who wanted more than anything else not to be black.

bert   June 28th, 2009 11:46 am ET

Do you honestly think our President is just president to the African American population; that they are the only ones he cares about? Does tunnel vision give you many headaches?

I share my bed with my daughter. Does that make me a sicko? And if I adopted a child I will treat them like my own, so does that make me a sicko? Michael Jackson did more for children around the globe than any of us, so I see nothing wrong with the comment, unless the allegations are true.

Regina   June 28th, 2009 11:42 am ET

This was very classy of Obama and I admire him for that. There are many things going on in the world, true, but few artists embody a special ability to tap into the very veins of what it means to be human – and all of its complexities- the way people like Michael did. Michael's body of work is a timeless commentary on what is going on in humanity. The video, Man in the Mirror, embodies that. Even in war torn countries, many people have Michael on their minds. His sensitivity made him see things in a very unique perspective, but it also made life painful for him. May he rest in peace and his legacy will never, ever, ever die. To all those who swear he is a pedophile, stop to consider this – what honest, caring parent would accept money in exchange for jailtime for someone who they know hurt their child? There has never been any proof to this and the parents of these kids are known con-artists. unfortunately, Michael learned too late that you cannot trust everyone you befriend even if you think you're just trying to help them.

YES thin is in....I would let my children and grandchildren stay overnight with this ICON. Please read about his reasons behind NEVERLAND. BUSLOADS of SICK children got to go there and get release from their pain and suffering for a little while. Michael had a heart of gold. He was tormented by sick minded people. NO MATTER GOD WILL SEE THAT HE GETS HIS CROWN !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Our GOD is all knowing , he knows all, we can hide nothing from HIM.

I can very easily imagine MICHAEL in his wings up there. Michael you deserve them. R.I.P MICHAEL and THANKS for all you did for this world !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You know, I love the internet, and I love online news, but I kind of miss the days when you could just read a news story and not get sucked in to reading every Tom, Dick and Harry's opinion about it in the comments section afterwards. This thread highlights the unfortunate side of freedom of speech.

To those that say "This shouldn't even be a news story"...yeah, well, you're the one that clicked on the link, you idiot. There was a story on here a few days ago about how Internet traffic was so high right after Jackson's death that it almost crashed major servers–meaning MJ almost took the whole Internet with him. People are interested in him, whether you like it or not–and if you don't want to read about it, then don't read about it, but don't get on a blog and get your panties in a wad and talk about how it shouldn't even be a news story. And don't make it out to be like Ed McMahon and Farrah Fawcett are in the same league as Michael Jackson, either, because that's frankly just idiotic. I don't like MJ's personal history any more than anyone else, but the fact that the man is beyond legendary doesn't need your personal stamp of approval in order to be verified. And the fact that Jackson is indeed such a large part of American pop culture is precisely why it shouldn't be any surprise that the President is commenting or writing letters or such. God help us, I'd imagine that just maybe even W might have done the same thing.

Janice   June 28th, 2009 11:39 am ET

You know President Obama is selfish for not writing to Farrah Fawcett's family. He's selfish folr not writing to Ed McMahon's family, Frank SInatra's, Liberace's, Rock Hudson's, Martin Luther King Jr's, and being 2 years old at the time should have not stopped him from writing to JFK's family after his assassination! Hey repukes, worry about Sanford OK.

Randy Ellis   June 28th, 2009 11:38 am ET

Did the President call or write a letter to the family of Farah Fawcett or Ed McMahon? The classy thing to do would treat everyone equal.

bert   June 28th, 2009 11:38 am ET

I don't know what the hold up was on acknowledging this great communicator. You can not deny God when his energy is present. Hardly any of us are perfect all the time, and neither was Michael, but there is no denying how special this man is or was. Only love can bring so many people together. For some reason the media wants to paint this man with a dastardly brush but I promise you if Michael was guilty, whether it's by circumstantial or physical evidence, the law would not of dropped the case against this black man and he would not have been able to beat the last case. This is a copy cat nation. Look at the crooks that are already jockying for postion in the money race concerning all things Michael Jackson. This black President should not miss the opportunity to speak on behalf of a man who made it possible for him to be where he is. MJ did more for race relations than any other black man, politician, religious figure or anyone you could think of in the last 200 years. Don't just receive the message from MJ, try and get it. This man was very important to all of us probably even more than we know as of yet.

It is duly noted that the POTUS has acknowledged MJ as the remarkable break through artist that he was but also has made not that on a more personal level MJ's life was sad and tragic. On so many levels. Living in a culture and fed into a self torment which cut so deep on the inside that he took it to his own flesh.
I see that Obama did not mention all the charitable attention MJ gave to children. That was wise. lol
MJ wasted money in a way that is repulsive to most people. Think of all the good that could have been done with his self serving waste. So, yes, as a person MJ was not worthy of praise.

Jacob-WA   June 28th, 2009 11:33 am ET

Oh and for all you people who say he is innocent. I urge you to watch the episode of 20/20 where Jackson was quoting saying there was something "magical about sharing a bed with a child". If you don't think that's sick then you're a loon.

The people asking about Farrah Fawcett's family getting/not getting a letter from President Obama, are stupid. David Axelrod WASN'T ASKED ABOUT FAWCETT!!! He was asked about MJ, you dopes!

You tabloid-picture readers need to get an education, and some manners, too! A letter is much more classy, more memorable, and more meaningful than a public statement that gets quoted on the airwaves, and repeated so many times that it loses its value! But posters like the ones trying to make even death a race issue wouldn't know class if it fell out of the sky and landed in their faces!! It just goes to show how stupid partisan right-wingnut Repugnicants can be!!

Go see about your boy, Sanford, if you want someone to cheer for their tackiness and lack of class!

Thin is in?   June 28th, 2009 11:24 am ET

You cretins who are sticking up for Jackson, would you allow your children to do sleepovers with him?

His own words, "warm milk and cookies, bedtime stories, snuggling and tucking in". Millions in payoffs....................

How about the bag of drugs he ate everyday, my bad, that was the "mans" fault.

Great awesome talent, but did he proudly serve his Country like Ed McMahon who retired a highly decorated veteran who served in Korea?

Did Jackson devote 41 YEARS to charity as McMahon did when serving as cohost for the Labor day telethon that raised BILLIONS and helped millions of children?

When Elvis died the media loved picking apart his issues as they were part of the package, but not with Jackson, can't point out the drugs and sleepovers and the fact that HE PAID MILLIONS TO HUSH SOME OF HIS VICTIMS, MILLIONS.

You know why, just like you can't disagree with the letter writer in chief on anything as you are racist.

Open the scab America, you know who the real cowards are.

Jacob-WA   June 28th, 2009 11:24 am ET

Why is it when I disagree with something he does I am automatically convicted as a "racist". I agree this is a great thing to do and all but singling out one person is completely unfair. Go ahead call me a "racist" but the fact that one (once) black man is getting a letter of condolences and two white celebrities aren't seems like discrimination to me, but I guess you can't discriminate against white people.

Mike   June 28th, 2009 11:21 am ET

It's just too bad that MJ's mental illness was not addressed when it was apparent when he was young.

lila   June 28th, 2009 11:20 am ET

As a performer MJ was gifted and he broke through race barriers and became the top selling artist of his time by a landslide. That's significant.
On a personal level MJ was disturbed man. The shame of his own race craved into his flesh. It's a sad story.

dun   June 28th, 2009 11:18 am ET

It is amazing to see the publicity that is being bestowed on a pedilfile, that because of his profile and money was aable to beat the charges.
More amazing is the fact, that the POTUS, would sent a personal letter of condulence,to the family.

What ever MJ was supposed to have contributed to society,it was not giving his life, for his country as so many thousands of young Americans, have done !!!!

God please help America

You cannot possibly put Michael Jackson and Farrah Fawcett or Ed McMahon on the same level. You may not be a fan of his work, but you have to be completely ignorant of the history of music and its evolution to think he was just an insignificant celebrity like any other. People are responding in a greater way to Michael's death for a reason. He is an icon of the highest caliber, who defined decades of entertainment. Michael Jackson was a visionary for multiple forms of art- breaking new ground for film, dance, and music. He was also fundamental in breaking racial barriers that were set for black artists at the time. He has a massive international following and inspired countless entertainers, who came before and after him. There is hardly a performer today, who doesn't owe SOMETHING to Michael Jackson. Don't be so shallow as to think that Obama's actions just come down to a "black and white" thing. Sure, Farrah Fawcett and Ed McMahon had a prolific careers, but they do not come close to the kind of groundbreaking work that impacted the wide-ranging audience that Michael Jackson had. You can travel almost anywhere in the world, show someone a picture of Michael Jackson or play one of his songs, and they will recognize him. If you weren't around in the 60s or 70s, you probably won't relate to Ed McMahon or Farrah Fawcett. However, GENERATIONS of people have memories attached to Michael's songs, and they remember what it was like to be awed by his performances throughout their lifetime. Obama is just acknowledging the passing of an incredibly influential man, a man who was practically an institution, larger than life itself, and who tragically passed well before his time.

Tomas E   June 28th, 2009 11:14 am ET

Too much of a deal is being made of Michael Jackson. Everyone thinks the world owes MJ everything. Enough. I'm tired of hearing this story and who should say what or think what or feel what. It is time to move on. Humanity has much bigger problems to deal with this endless news stories and news cycles such as this.

jigjog   June 28th, 2009 11:14 am ET

I agree Obama – has shown alot of class, his haters may say whatever they want, but he has preserved the dignity of his office a depicted his personal humility.
Lets forget no other Presidents in our history mourned each individual celebrity, he is not a Mourner – in – Chief.

Michael has contributed a lot more and stands out for some recognition. He donated to charity, sung non profane songs that carried beautiful humble messages, broke down racial barriers in the music world. Visited all parts of the world and included them in his message. He clearly stood. He was a "superstar" not a star like Ed and Farrah.

He was the likes of Bruce Lee, Mohammad Ali people who galvanized all races all over the world, yet he was more than Bruce for he contributed to charity and sung out against bigotry. "If you are my baby it don't matter if you are Black or White". He even made himself look white to ensure he is comfortable in both skins and white-like kids.

I agree with the posts that aree asking why this is even news or maybe more to the point why did Obama waste his time for any reason other than personal reasons.

Sure the music was good (most of the time), but this is not the big disaster that it is being turned into. This was a sad death of a person that I believe, by in large, lived a sad life.

Oour country has problems that will linger for decades and that is where he attention should be. I know Obama is human and will do human ( and humane) things like this from time-to-time, but CNN doesn't need to waste the bandwidth on it either.

The whole story is ove, the end!!

Alex   June 28th, 2009 11:06 am ET

This comment list is a sad sign of how far Americans have fallen on the intelligence scale. The fact that this is even a "news" story is ludicrous, but the fact that people are actually scrutinizing it is a hundred times worse.

So far Obama has actually been doing things in office, like new policy development (which I like more than vacation time). We're already light years ahead of where the last idiot in that office left us. The only criticisms here are leveled at insubstantial and vague ideas of who the man is, not the actual facts of his administration. Educate yourselves and start learning how to intelligently assess your politicians.

Bil   June 28th, 2009 11:06 am ET

Tommymack – I agree with you; but how do you know that President Obama DIDN'T write a letter to McMahon's family? Just because the media didn't report it?

Soozy – the FIRST statement of compassion? Again – you know everything he's done? You stand over his shoulder and watch him work?

PLEASE... everyone.... stop making assumptions because you have some sort of agenda against our president. It only makes you look uneducated and bitter...

Julia Nunn   June 28th, 2009 11:06 am ET

What idiotic members of the press would ask the president of the US why he did not speak publicly about the death of an entertainer? Michael Jackson was unfortunately a disturbed man who had made many fine contributions to the music and dance world in the past but I cannot see why that should involve President Obama any more than the painful death of Farrah Fawcett who died the same day Jackson did. They were both icons for their day; why is no one badgering Obama about making a public statement about Fawcett? It would make as much sense.

Sho   June 28th, 2009 11:04 am ET

The President stands for all people. It is only publicly known of the letter to the Jackson family. Who's to say he didn't reach out to the other fallen celebrity's families with condolences. Let it go and stop looking to be negative.

What have you done for the families that lost a love one?

Christine   June 28th, 2009 11:04 am ET

Again, classy response by a classy President.

Fredly2   June 28th, 2009 11:03 am ET

Yes, Obama – Jackson was "an important and magnificent performer" just like Farra Fawsett was an important and magnificent performer. So it looks like racial ressure was put on America's Black President to favor a BLACK male sex abuser over a white female personality. Way to go Obama. It was all about record sales, Right ?

It's a Black thing. You haters wouldn't understand. You're not a minority, so you can't relate. Don't give yourself a migraine trying! From OFF THE WALL to INVINCIBLE ... the fans love the music. We love MJ's music. We don't read the taloids when it comes to his life. We are proud of our brother. Your criticism is expected. Way to go Mr. President! The note is a fabulous touch. His parents and children greatly appreciate it.

Joan   June 28th, 2009 11:00 am ET

I am deeply moved by the death of MJ, but it is not an obligation for the President to make a statement. He cannot respond to everyone's passing. There is so much more involved in everything he says that we don't understand. I trust him.

Sharon   June 28th, 2009 10:59 am ET

A condolence letter, is a nice way to acknowledge a person's death, written by anyone, to a family. Letter's wait, calls can be too demanding and interrupting. The phone rings constantly during this time especially with so many family members trying to get details on fast changing plans. Nothing president Obama could of said or done would of made this loss any easier to bear. I think MJ would appreciate acceptance and peace, by his fans. Remember John Lennon? We didn't like his death, and the way it came about but we had to "accept" it. Accept peace, and be still. Pray for the family to endure this tragedy and help them to heal by doing kind acts.

Anne-   June 28th, 2009 10:58 am ET

What the he@* is wrong with [some] of you people. You could really use some "anger management". Love him or hate him, President Obama just as Michael Jackson and Farrah Fawcet deserve "respect". Period.

Now, about Mr. Jackson...those of you who condum the President's actions in regards to a "private" letter being sent to his family, or the fact that he acknowledged Michael Jackson's legacy at all.

I don't know you, but I bet my ars that you were quick...yes quick to shake a leg or nod your head at the first hearing of any Michael Jackson music when it was played on the radio.

My words to you...

STOP HATING!!! Geez...what bitter people. Go get counseling!
This is a major problem in America today...and yes it is primarily racially motivated. Shame on your parents!!!

Sad Grandma in Kentucky   June 28th, 2009 10:58 am ET

To Cindi and Gibbs...Michael was cleared of those charges. Look at all that he has done for the children of the world, what have you done? Do you donate to charities like he did ? I love children too, does that mean I molest them ? NOOOO. If all the people of this world had a heart like Michael did, we would all be happier and safer. This world lost a legend and an icon. Never will his shoes be filled. Heaven has gained a special angel. Michael has his wings.
R.I.P. MICHAEL YOU ARE SO LOVED and WILL BE MISSED by so many.
Your LEGEND will LIVE FOREVER !!! My prayers are with his wonderful mother and the rest of his family and loved ones.

So next time you want to listen to a Jackson song and the government tells you it is banned, remember me.

The Real Issue   June 28th, 2009 10:54 am ET

Our president handled it appropriately. He probably did not know the family at a personal level. To those who choose to nick pick at everything our president does or does not do, keep it up because level headed Americans know that we voted for the right leader and got it right this time!

Susan   June 28th, 2009 10:54 am ET

This is not a matter of state. To comment more openly is to divert attention to the policy matters.

But, this may represent more clearly, to the family, the impact Michael Jackson had on Obama as he was growing up and trying to find his footing as a black in a white world. (Yes, Hawaii was a little easier due to the multiracial, but still, it was a white man's world. Even his grandmother worried about the ADULT black man walking down the same street as her.)
And, it is a acknowledgment of the depth and breadth of the the effect Michael Jackson had on the musical and cultural world – in America and Globally.

tommymack   June 28th, 2009 10:54 am ET

There is no doubt that Jackson was a great performer. But if Obama is going to write personal letters to the families of deceased celebrities, how about one to the family of Ed McMahon. Ed was a Marine veteran who loved his country. He was one of the most endearing figures in television history - a man, Johnny Carson said, who was as responsible for the success of the Tonight Show as anyone. For years he worked tirelessly alongside Jerry Lewis on the MD telethone. But I suppose it is not politically expedient for Obama to praise McMahon, so I guess I should not be surprised.

New Mexican   June 28th, 2009 10:53 am ET

Jeff ... how many crimes were MJ found guilty of? Turn over to your brothers at Fox News and watch Geraldo's take on that. It was blood suckers trying to get paid. Was the guy eccentric? Yes. Did he put himself in situations that caused suspicion? Yes. Does that make him a molester? No. You're an ignorant racist. He contributed a lot to society. What have you done for America, lately?

JP   June 28th, 2009 10:53 am ET

In my opinion, MJ was a wacked out doper and a child molester, and I can't believe the President would waste the time to send MJ's family a personal letter. Little boys will sleep better all over the wrld now that MJ is no longer able to prowl the night.

SensibleFella   June 28th, 2009 10:51 am ET

Completely agree, Leo, very tacky.

jeff p   June 28th, 2009 10:50 am ET

The President can't even do something nice without people criticizing on message boards like this. This story isn't about whether or not you hate Obama, but apparently a lot of people think it is. Oh well... regardless, he did a nice thing for the Jackson family by writing a letter. Michael Jackson was iconic, and was a very important part of pop culture. Love him or hate him, he will be missed.

Soozy   June 28th, 2009 10:50 am ET

First statement of compassion since Obama has been elected. The man has no compassion for anything IMO. He is the least compassionate President the US has ever had. Of course that comes from only being capable of reading your agenda. Talking only about what is put in front of you and infomercials. This man is cold so being nice to the Jackson's is a surprise isn't it? Was it sent to Farrah and McMann Families. I rather doubt it.. Why no compassion for them Mr. President? Many who were in awe with you Sir are no longer. I kbnow you will turn out worse than Carter when the media start seeing the truth behind you!!!!

Trina   June 28th, 2009 10:49 am ET

We don't know if the Prez did or didn't write letters to soldiers' families, or other celebrities' families regarding their death. We speculate. Furthermore, if he didn't write a letter to Farrah's family, so what. As an African American "trailblazer", Michael Jackson did a lot for the Black community – as well as other communities! Did Farrah donate millions to AIDS, Hunger Relief, etc? The President does NOT have to explain to the American people WHY he (or his wife, and children) were touched by MJ's death. Of course ... this WOULD make news. Skeptics live each day by looking for "something" to critique. It's all good. I critiqued George W on a daily basis, too. Carry on, children.

Jeff   June 28th, 2009 10:48 am ET

How many times were Farrah and Ed arrested for crimes against children? How many MILLIONS did they pay out to silence other victims?? Just wondering.

Leo   June 28th, 2009 10:48 am ET

What some folks don't realise of Obama is his sheer class and unpredictability....SO WHAT IF HE TAKES HIS TIME TO MAKE A MOVE...he is tacky and his final decision in the long run is so good.

Judy   June 28th, 2009 10:48 am ET

Some of these posts are so silly. Axlerod wasn't asked about Farrah Fawcett or Ed Ed McMahon or Neda Agha-Soltan. You have no idea whether President Obama wrote letters to their families or not. You are just haters and will find fault with any and everything this President does. What does that make you?

Diane   June 28th, 2009 10:46 am ET

What a great President! Too bad all the white racists try to ruin it.

Alex   June 28th, 2009 10:46 am ET

Obama has to tread lightly on this because if he suddenly made a huge statement not only would people complain about "what about the soldier killed in Iraq?" as some have already done, but he'd also be crucified for paying tribute to a very controversial figure (as if just because Jackson's dead the trials and the baby danging will suddenly go away). The people trying to spin this into an excuse to bash Obama really need to get their priorities right. Bash him regarding health care, bailouts or the war on terror if you must, but bashing him over this just makes your message look silly.

Jeff   June 28th, 2009 10:45 am ET

Some of you seem to suffer from the same problems Michael had.....Can you make it a little more obvious how snobby some of you are? and someone mentioned class...puh. Guy acknowledged an American Legend, big deal, get over yourselves.

Cree   June 28th, 2009 10:44 am ET

You know this is really sad.. President Obama is criticized for everything. First of all, MIchael Jackson was NEVER convicted. Our problem is the U.S. is we are "fair weather friends". We are with you when it's good but when it's bad and someone makes a percieved mistake... We CRUCIFY, TORTURE, PICK APART AND CAST TO THE DEPTHS OF HELL. The last time I checked, Only GOD can put someone in hell. The funny thing is, everyone in this world has done things whether seen or unseen (to mankind) that would not be pleasing to God... We should be ashamed of ourselves so being so critical and tacky. Michael Jackson was a musical genious and to quote what another indivdiual wrote here.. He broke down barriers.. It was just 25 years ago that black videos were not played on MTV.

People need to mind their own business and stop being so judgmental.. Get YOUR life together because you don't know your last day and ask YOURSELF.. Where will you spend eternity?

Nancy - Houston   June 28th, 2009 10:44 am ET

I'll bet Michael's spirit is watching this circus going on about his death and is laughing himself to tears. One would think he is the most important person... right up there with Jesus Christ. He is just another human being, so people should settle down and quit making something sinister out of the way he died. No doubt with the Rev. Jackson and Sharpton involved, someone is going to be sued. I really enjoyed watching that cute little guy sing with his brothers and still so cute in his teenage years, but after his "makeover," I think many normal fans were turned off after that weird behavior. Nevertheless, everyone should calm down and let the guy rest in peace.

bee   June 28th, 2009 10:43 am ET

Give the man a chance instead of jumping down his throat at every turn he makes. He is a classy individual with more compassion and respect for others than many of you "Obama Haters" will every have in your lifetime. I think he handled this situation with MJ and his family perfectly. Only thing that upsets people is that they don't know what was written. Give it up and quit being so nosey!!!!!!!!!!

JM   June 28th, 2009 10:43 am ET

Stop trying to ride MJ's coat tails.

Roger   June 28th, 2009 10:42 am ET

He just seems unable to understand when you represent the whole nation it is not the right thing to do. Ed and Farrah being White should be equal in his out reach or he is letting his color get in the way. When he comes up with this kind of expression for some and not others is why so many of us can't stand him as a President.

pa. independent   June 28th, 2009 10:42 am ET

Obama will be criticized no matter what he does, so he has to do what he thinks is right, and what he is comfortable with. Period. A personally written letter to the family, that they can touch and keep, is a very thoughtful way of expressing condolences.

Alyn   June 28th, 2009 10:39 am ET

Our President is awesome.....we are blessed to have him run our country. Sending a private letter to the family is sincere....a public statement is not. He's doing unto them as he would want done unto him.
God bless the Jackson family in their loss of Michael and God bless this country. Thank you for the years of entertainment MJ and for sharing your talent with the entire world.

politics suck   June 28th, 2009 10:39 am ET

POTUS did the right thing sending a letter. As great as an entertainer Michael Jackson was, his scandalous and bizarre behavior over the past two decades do not deserve a public address. I do not agree with the people on crying foul with Farrah Fawcett and Ed McMahon. Michael had a global appeal that transcended across all races and ages, I look at these photos from all over the world and I am truly amazed at the impact of his death. Farrah and Ed did not have that global appeal, like it or not.

Sari   June 28th, 2009 10:37 am ET

Bradley in PA- you called someone a tool and a moron in like 2 sentences. ???

Melchizedek Ouma   June 28th, 2009 10:37 am ET

He did the right thing. It is about balancing emotion and leading a country.

Anthony Beauford   June 28th, 2009 10:36 am ET

Micheal Jackson more was than a prolific entertainer. He was an ambassador of good will who gave 50 million dollars of his own money to charity over the course of his life. This man not only changed the course of history through his music, but he created a pop culture. He may have not been a politician , but his career had a political relevance that is felt to this day. RIP Mike.

Redbarron06   June 28th, 2009 10:35 am ET

Where is the letter that BHO wrote to the soldier that was shot outside or the Little Rock recruiting office? Where were his statements on national TV or Radio condeming the act of terrorism on our own soil. The first one since 9/11 and it happened under his watch.

He makes a big deal when a guy that gets paid to provide security gets gunned down by a white supremist but he fails to even raise an eyebrow when a home grown jihadist raised in TN fresh back from Yeman guns down 2 army recruits that are standing on the side walk.

This imposter is an embarrassment to the office he holds. He is driving straight ahead to make us the USSA and he along with Ried, Pelosi and the other congress critters will be the undoing of our country.

Shecky   June 28th, 2009 10:34 am ET

As usual, Obama can't make a decision without checking which way the wind is blowing. Why did it take him THREE DAYS to decide whether to make a public comment about MJ?

And, DID he or did he not send letters of condolences to Farrah Fawcett and Ed McMahon's families?

What a tool.
2012 can't come fast enough.

Charlie Jones   June 28th, 2009 10:33 am ET

I guess Obama is still composing similar letters to the families of Farrah Fawcett, Ed McMahon and Neda Agha-Soltan?!

HellsEye   June 28th, 2009 10:33 am ET

Cindi, I think that is because none of them contributed to the world or their respective crafts as much as Michael. Lol. So to you, and people like Ted and Gibbs, just stop hating an let the man rest in peace. Oh and as far as the child molestation goes he was aquitted....So keep hating suckers!!!!!

Carol   June 28th, 2009 10:32 am ET

A President with common sense, which so many people are lacking these days. What difference should it make to us , especially in the lost of anyone's loved one, what he has to say to them, from his heart. For anyone who feels the need to HEAR what he had to say to the family, you really need to get a life. And to the person who says just call them, When something like this happens, people get tired of talking, they need time to themselves. You idiots will turn ANY opportunity into a political parade,

NYNURSE   June 28th, 2009 10:31 am ET

Yes, I also thought how inappropiate it was to write a letter to the Jackson family. To me, it is singling out who he (Obama) thinks is the important influential people of this world. I prefer that the President didn't acknowledge any of these sad deaths this week. A general "my heart goes out to the families of McMahon, Fawcett and Jackson", would have sufficed. I also feel this is black preferential treatment, which I am so tired of.

happy 101   June 28th, 2009 10:31 am ET

The president had done the right thing, Us Americans need to move on and stop being criticial of every move he makes. Gee, he cannot do anything right unless his haters scrutinize him.

People, find some thing to do with your time..

Paul   June 28th, 2009 10:30 am ET

I don't think President Obama is a good president, but it doesn't mean I don't have respect for the man. Michael Jackson, for all of his human flaws, was a part of American history and an icon. The president's response showed class and an obvious compassion regarding the privacy of the Jackson family during a very difficult time.

Brenda Gillespie - St. Louis   June 28th, 2009 10:29 am ET

In spite of the way it is done in our Society. Death is Sacred! Barack Obama and his family know that! America is already grieving for the this huge loss.

I think it is fantastic that the Public can't pick apart every word of what Barack Obama's family had to say. Leave it a Lone! IT AINT YOUR BUSINESS!

usualone   June 28th, 2009 10:28 am ET

Whatever one thinks of Michael Jackson, he did open up the joy of music that all races could universally enjoy. Color blindness is apparent in this regard - and that is certainly noteworthy in history. Mr. Obama does not owe it to us to tell us to whom he has written. We have to give him a chance to be human.

Leah   June 28th, 2009 10:28 am ET

He is right to not announce this on the air. Michael Jackson (RIP) has nothing to do with Politic or any issues that he is facing on a daily basis.
Having said that, Michael Jackson has and will always been an significant part of history particularly music.
At a personal level, I am sure that the President grew up with Jackson song just like many others.
It's a classy thing to do to not politics and personal issues
At a personal level, this is the right thing to to reach out to the family of MJ

thetruth   June 28th, 2009 10:27 am ET

A lot of people seem to forget, or are just willfully ignorant of the facts and history. Way back when, despite what it looks like today–MTV was'nt playing black videos and artists. Along came Michael Jackson who changed all that. He was an undeniable force who could'nt be stopped. He broke down racial barriers and allowed a platform for black artists to display their talents in the electronic medium. He was one of the first black artists, that was considered "non-threatning–whatever that means?" to white America in a televised forum; and clearly paved the way for Barack Obama to even be possible. The same Barack Obama who would later rely so heavily on the televised medium! Other's that did the same thing & carried the torch were Michael Jordan, Bill Cosby, Oprah Winfrey... Michael Jackson also was a big democratic party supporter and fundraiser. Not to mention his symbolism as a worldwide iconic representation of American pop culture. I think the president was slow with his response and could've been more appreciative and solid in paying respects to Michael Jackson.

Imani   June 28th, 2009 10:26 am ET

I feel that it was right to make a statement to the family to be personal. I understand the death of Michael Jackson has a big affect on the music industy but he is not bigger then the world. NOr is he bigger than God. People please get a grip!

jaye   June 28th, 2009 10:23 am ET

The Jackson family will appreciate this gesture of condolence from the White House.

California Gold   June 28th, 2009 10:23 am ET

I agree, it was an appropriate gesture.

Cloves of Garlic   June 28th, 2009 10:22 am ET

Very classy and respectful. Another job well done Mr. President. Obama 2012!

MissJD   June 28th, 2009 10:22 am ET

I think sending private condolences actually shows that the president's priorities are in order. A public statement may have been seen as taking precedence over pressing issues like N Korea, Iran, and the economy.
Seems like he took the best route.
There's no doubt that the American public AND the world is touched by MJ's passing and a large segment of the population would be upset if the White House was totally silent on the issue.
No matte what, someone's going to be upset with this administration and you can't please everyone.

Judy   June 28th, 2009 10:19 am ET

ted June 28th, 2009 9:55 am ET

I trust the President is writing to the families of every service member killed in the line of duty.
=====================================================
The President has mentioned several times that the most humbling and sobering part of his job is writting letters to the families of our fallen service men and women.

60's survivor   June 28th, 2009 10:19 am ET

as is his perogative. this isn't national business. just from the heart. nuff sed.

Bradley in PA   June 28th, 2009 10:15 am ET

Hey Ted, you are a moron. The President DOES send letters of condolence to the family members of every single service member killed in the line of duty. You tool.

Success   June 28th, 2009 10:13 am ET

What a very brilliant president America has. His shrewed character is simply magnificient!

anee   June 28th, 2009 10:13 am ET

Obama is a gentleman. A letter is always better. (He does not have their phone number!!) :) :)

annie against biased news   June 28th, 2009 10:12 am ET

To Charlie in Maine – I feel terribly sorry for you – you have evidently never seen anything even close to a 'class act'.

annie against biased news   June 28th, 2009 10:10 am ET

Did axelrod say how they felt about corruptly pushing thru the house the largest tax increase in the history of the USA? Did he say how they would feel if this gets to be law and the American people are starving to death or freezing to death? Did he mention why they are destroying our country?

What A Joke   June 28th, 2009 10:10 am ET

I wonder if the President sent a letter to Ed McMahon's family or lets see Farrah Fawcett's??? Just sayin.

Neilz   June 28th, 2009 10:08 am ET

We wouldn't want to alienate a few million fans now would we? He's going to need some serious increase in enlistment numbers by 2010.

Cindi   June 28th, 2009 10:07 am ET

Two other celebrities died, one on the same day as Jackson and neither were pedophiles. Has Obama reached out to families of Ed McMahon and Farrah Fawcett, I wonder why?

republicans hate america   June 28th, 2009 10:06 am ET

The Rush Limbaugh Party will find a way to criticize him for not making a public position out of it.

GIBBS   June 28th, 2009 10:06 am ET

finally...obama has done something right! he knows that michael was a great entertainer but in the end was nothing more than a child molester and pedafile.

Kaye -Jacksonville FL   June 28th, 2009 10:05 am ET

I was absolutely stunned that the White House Press Corps would bother asking about Obama's response to the death of Michael Jackson....one more example of the WHPC having terribly misplaced priorities. They want to focus on celebrity deaths and an occasionally sneaked cigarette. Relatively petty stuff, IMO.... the "big media" folks in this country are sinking to new lows.

Jason   June 28th, 2009 10:00 am ET

he should write a letter to the FBI next, volunteering himself to serve time for marijuana possession.

or, legalize it.

Charlie in Maine   June 28th, 2009 9:57 am ET

This President never ceases to impress me. He Michelle and their two beautiful daughters are a class act. Once he has been at this for a while I think even people who disagree with his policies will have to admit that on a basic human level these are decent folks. I remember feeling that way about the Reagans even thought I was against 90% of his policies. I don't imagine that, policy aside, many people on the right ever felt that way about the Clintons and most of us on the left never felt that way about Georgre W. Bush. But these Obamas make me proud every day.

Annette   June 28th, 2009 9:56 am ET

Has Perez Hilton started working for CNN? That is the only reason I can think of that would explain the sudden use of the phrase "reach out" in serious news reports.

Bill   June 28th, 2009 9:56 am ET

A letter?! Just call them you liberal sissy!

ted   June 28th, 2009 9:55 am ET

I trust the President is writing to the families of every service member killed in the line of duty.

Andy   June 28th, 2009 9:50 am ET

Looks like he can't do ANYTHING right as president. He should be making a public statement. And he said his administration would be transparent... psht.

Just kidding. I'm glad.

Andre   June 28th, 2009 9:47 am ET

Classy thing to do.
