President Obama's approval rating has remained steady.

WASHINGTON (CNN) – A new national poll indicates that President Barack Obama's approval rating among Americans remains steady.

Sixty-one percent of people questioned in a CNN/Opinion Research Corporation survey released Monday say they approve of how Obama's handling his duties as president. Thirty-seven percent disapprove.

The 61 percent approval rating is down one point from May and down six points from February.

"Since March, Obama's approval rating has gone down one percentage point each month in CNN polls," notes CNN Polling Director Keating Holland. "In March it was 64 percent; in April it was 63 percent. Last month his approval rating stood at 62 percent and now it is at 61 percent."

The poll suggests when it comes to opinions of Obama, gender and generation gaps continue.

Sixty-seven percent of women questioned in the survey approve of how Obama's handling his job as president. That number drops to 54 percent among men. Two-thirds of people under 50 years old questioned in the poll approve of the president's handling of his duties. That number drops to 54 percent among people over 50 years of age.

"We saw these same patterns in the exit polls on election night," Holland says. "It looks like the groups who voted heavily for Obama are sticking with him, but the groups in which his vote was lower are starting to drift."

The CNN/Opinion Research Corporation poll was conducted Friday through Sunday, with 1,026 adult Americans questioned by telephone. The survey's sampling error is plus or minus three percentage points.

It is so obvious that people posting infavor of Obama are either young or minorities. Give me give me give me. Sorry kid. Dad's out of money. Make your own. I love it when they say things like I'm over 50 and I voted for him. If you have to say you are over 50 I think it is quite obvious you are not.

@ J.Crobuzon -

Get your facts straight; 6 of 8 yrs under Bush showed economic growth, low unemployment and a good housing market...

enter the DEMOCRATIC congress in 2006, with Pelosi, Reid, Dodd, oh...and Obama....and the markets tanked, why? Because Obama and Dodd were in bed with Freddie Mac and Raines; getting kick backs. This was the nucleus of the mortgage meltdown leading to the markets melting down.....and the bozo was elected by liberals....
do some research somewhere besides obama buttkissing websites.....

Where is the ability for people to read bills before they are passed?

You can read them on the Library of Congress web site (thomas.loc.gov). All bills are posted there. It's not easy reading but if you're interested in a bill, the full text of all versions are there. The House versions are normally posted and voted on first with Senate versions posted and voted on later.
For example, the House version of the stimulus bill was posted several weeks before it was passed. The senate version was much nearer to passage but it was mostly the same as the House version (with some obvious tweeks). The GOP complained they didn't have time to read it but somehow managed to publish criticisms of it (without reading it first?) before the senate version was even started.

Don't blame Obama because you haven't taken the time and effort to go find what you're looking for.

The howls of those hating the president at expense of reason is amazing. When thier man Bush was in office "playing" the role as a president. His cronies robbed us all blind and left the nation in the worse reccession in 85 years.

Yet they dog this president daily and he has only been in office a few months.

What fools the republicans are. They are the very definition of "useful idiots".

HeadlessHessian   June 29th, 2009 4:07 pm ET

According to a poll conducted by me on me, I believe Obama is DaMan! Elegant, a pleasure to listen to, articulate, communicates extremely well, has a vision for the United States first, looks after the american public and not give aways to corporations, is not a religious fruit cake. Best of all he is light years ahead of Dubyah! actually a slug puts Dubyah to shame.
Obama rocks! Face you right wingers...the man outclasses 3 times over anyone you put up against him.

I know McCain couldn't have done any better. However, what is Obama doing that isn't about the same as GWB, except spending more? His healthcare and energy bills will saddle the working man with more taxes for years. I suspect that Obama will be as despised as LBJ was before he completes his term in office. Maybe the repubs will win more seats in the Congress in 2010, and Obama will pull to the middle like Clinton did. That worked as well as any of the presidents I have voted for (since JFK).

You're forgiven for voting for him; however, have to disagree with him being the least of the two evils. John McCain genuinely cares about this country....yes, it was two flaming liberals as a choice...however, Obama's agenda is to change the country into something unrecognizable using "recession, economy, and healthcare," as cover stories for his political goals. Anyone that socializes with knownn terrorists, idolizes Saul Alinsky and sits in a racist church for 20 yrs...doesn't have the best interest of this nation in mind. Obama's a snake oil selling, street activist at best; and we're seeing that on a daily basis. McCain wasn't a beacon of hope, but between the two, he at least loved this country, the people and our American way of life.

Most politically mature americans (Even those 30 and below) voted for Mr Obama because of the sheer lunacy, imcompetence and arrogance of the preceeding administration frightened the bejesus out of Americans over the past eight years.

Most Americans understand that no president with the exception of FDR and maybe Woodrow Wilson faced a similar set of challenges in the last 100 years or so.

These polls does not really much. I'am more interested in a year from now than 6 months into his administration. We can not judge any effect of his policies in 6 months and make an accurate judgement. How can anyone be certain that what he did with GM& company will work or not? If you listen to the mouth pieces of the republican party than of course the answer is no but if you listen to others, the answers vary. The fact is only time will tell and no polls can take the pulse of the people. At one time bush was at 90% and left with the lowest approval rating of any president. I'm still happy with his overall performance.

And in regard to the actions he's taken that are similar to Bush's: Bush wasn't 100% wrong, 100% of the time. There's going to be some overlap.

The big difference for me is that I trust Obama's decision-making process.

- I have confidence he is capable of taking the long view and always acts in the best interest of our country and not for short-term political gain.

- He's not perfect, but I also appreciate the fact that he's able to honestly appraise himself and a situation, be accountable for his actions, and make necessary changes. That takes humility and strength of character.

- He's intelligent, steadfast and his own man.

What a wonderful breath of fresh air in the White House!

seebofubar   June 29th, 2009 3:26 pm ET

You knew this was going to happen. The campaign was all full of hope and promisses. Economy, it is too early to tell. Social rights– he has angered extremists on both ends of the spectrum, which means he is in the middle where he belongs. He represents ALL of Americans, not just extremists.

Question...   June 29th, 2009 2:53 pm ET

67% ? Is it too late to repeal the whole women voting thing?

jaye   June 29th, 2009 2:50 pm ET

He's an excellent president – and the only people that don't support him are the fox news and Limbaugh haters.

Melissa   June 29th, 2009 2:49 pm ET

Why are you doing polls every single week? We never saw this with any other President. Chill out.

Chris - Denver   June 29th, 2009 2:48 pm ET

Good. Maybe that means the right-wing hate speech is losing its effectiveness.

katiec   June 29th, 2009 2:48 pm ET

As a senior citizen I fully support President Obama.
Also as a senior citizen I have never seen a political party take part in trying to destroy the future of our country. Am disgusted, dismayed and angry that the republican party tries to obstruct, discredit and distort any and every policy put out there regardless of it's merits.
They have become our countries most dangerous domestic
terrorists.

scott   June 29th, 2009 2:48 pm ET

This poll proves that the older over 50 generation of white males didn't want change. They enjoyed the totalitarian fascist police state plantation that america was and still is to some extent. Republicans never quit and they only lose once in a while(thank god!)

matt   June 29th, 2009 2:47 pm ET

Obama is popular. His policies are not.

According to an average of six polls, as reported by Real Clear Politics, 51.6% of individuals polled believe the country is on the wrong track. Only 42.2% believe it is on the right track. This is an average of the following polls – Democracy Corps, ABC News/Washington Post, Daily Kos/R2000, CBS News/NY Times, NBC News/Wall St Journal and Pew Research.

Considering the sources, it's not slanted at all to the right.

He will continue to slide as the truth about his inexperience and poor judgment becomes clear.

Biased facts   June 29th, 2009 2:47 pm ET

Steadily dropping that is.

George   June 29th, 2009 2:47 pm ET

No wonder his approval rating is high. He is trying to make the USA number one again. After 8 years of corruption and going backwards this sure is a fresh nice change.
Now if he eliminates off shore tax loopholes, there will be plenty of money for health care without taxing anyones benefits. Obama and congress can do that. The republicans will fight it because their friends own off shore businesses. End it now and the money will flow in the USA again.

Stephanie   June 29th, 2009 2:46 pm ET

Ummm... A six point, or nine percent drop, is holding steady? CNN, continuing to carry the water.

Fair is Fair   June 29th, 2009 2:46 pm ET

"Two-thirds of people under 50 years old questioned in the poll approve of the president's handling of his duties. That number drops to 54 percent among people over 50 years of age."

I voted for him, he was lesser of the evils in the election. I'm starting to question his decisions every day now. Starting with the fact that he made Hillary Clinton Secretary of State, and now he wants to make racist Sotomeyer a supreme court justice. Maybe Bill Clinton will get the next supreme court justice seat. I'm starting to regret voting for Obama.

Smooth sailing ahead   June 29th, 2009 2:44 pm ET

I believe that's what the captain of the Titanic said...

Ken   June 29th, 2009 2:41 pm ET

1 percent drop per month, consistent over 4 months (longer if you want to look at a longer time period) equals steady approval?

Welcome to the new – liberal – don't look too close at the facts – world.

Enough   June 29th, 2009 2:41 pm ET

Another CNN fabricated poll. Would like to know who you are polling. How is spending money faster than we can print it.......good? Nothing has been accomplished so far by this administration. Lots of talk and pushing through huge spending bills, but nothing to show for it, but massive debt.
