President Obama touched on the changed situation in Iraq during a White House event Tuesday.

WASHINGTON (CNN) - President Barack Obama said Tuesday that street celebrations in Iraq for the withdrawal of U.S. troops from cities and towns were a testament to the sacrifices of U.S. troops in the country.

In brief remarks at a White House event on technological innovation, Obama said the drawback meant that Iraq's future was now in the hands of its leaders and people.

"The Iraqis are rightly treating this day as a cause for celebration," Obama said, calling the "important milestone" the result of the good work by U.S. forces who first entered Iraq in 2003 and toppled the regime of former leader Saddam Hussein.

Obama warned of tough times ahead in Iraq, noting a bombing earlier Tuesday in Kirkuk that killed at least 30 people. He said the United States would continue to support Iraq as it works to become "a "sovereign, stable, and self-reliant" country.

The U.S. withdrawal was part of an agreement signed last year between former President George W. Bush's administration and the Iraq leadership. The agreement calls for all U.S. forces to leave Iraq by the end of 2011.

The remaining 130,000 U.S. troops in Iraq are now tasked with supporting Iraqi troops and police, and will require Iraqi permission to launch operations in the cities.

And just what exactly has Obama cleaned up? Maybe some crumbs off the kitchen counter? No, my blissful Obamkin, Obama's done nothing advantageous for our country...ZERO....you'll see..

@Proud Member..Party of No -

They wouldn't suffer...Obama would've helped them out...he'd have taught Saddam about how to rob from the rich....tax them, slight the hard workers of the country...voter fraud....bloated healthcare plans...bogus climate bills....overstuffed porkulus bills....all the great leadership things! Obama would've slowly taxes them to death...

the Iraq citizens now have their destiny in their control.
Our troops can come home.......or at least most.......then they will be sent to other areas.....
They all need rest.

Funny how the battle between Iraqi Shiite and Sunni factions ended just before the surge began. Hmm... Do you think that might have something to do with the reduction in violence attributed to the surge? Have a nice day!

TCM   June 30th, 2009 4:40 pm ET

@ DUTCH -

Don't worry, you'll have your chance to criticize Obama's military prowess real soon; or the lack thereof.....Saddam was a WMD...and needed to go...he's a sally-boy, and the world bad guys know it...

What is happening in Iraq today is no way connected to Obama.
He was anti-Iraqi War from the git go, against the surge, against democracy there period. We better hope to hell Iraq can stand on their own after this because Obama won't lift a finger to help these people should they need it.

Leah   June 30th, 2009 4:38 pm ET

Mr. Obama against Iraq war from the beginning and he was right all along. GOP whinniers, please take note: Saddam may be a bad guy but at least, there weren't much of suicided bombing on a daily basis as of now so a BIG THANKS to GW for his WMD Fakes.

Over 4,000 US solders died, over 100,000 Iraqi innocent life has been loss.
So Go on GOP whiners Kudo to Bush! for those 4,000+ US solders who is no longer to be with his/her family today.

It's despicable how Republicans attacked and accused President Obama of being a Muslim; yet now accuse President Obama of ignoring the suffering of Iraqis who are also Muslim.

Republicans don't care that Iraqis (Muslims) suffered under Saddam Hussein for years before Bush's war.

All you hear from that side is a lot of immature high school football game one-upmanship rhetoric.

I am so glad that you agree. That means that as the current president, this is his economy, his budget, his "stimulus, his tax increases and if we are bombed by North Korea, it is on his watch.

Thanks goodness I don't have to have to hear about Bush's this or that anymore. *wishful thinking*

While you are at it BHO please pull the troups out of South Korea, – we have had troops there for more than 50 years after the Korean War. Lets pull our troops out of Germany where they have been for 60 years after WW2. Do we still have troops in Kosovo? If so pull them out of there too. Lets bring everybody home.

@ Dutch "Thank You for ending this unwarranted war Mr. President"

What a lie. And Obama is really working it with blind supporters like this one.

The Truth: He is leaving 1000's of troops in Iraq, no plans to end anything, spending as much on the military as Bush and planning troop increases elsewhere in the world. People are continuing to DIE because of his coninuation of US military adventures!

Mr. Obama – end the wars – stop lying – bring our troops ALL home.

Most contributors to CNN's political ticker are ignortant of civics (The study of government with particular attention given to the role of citizens― as opposed to external factors― in the operation and oversight of government).
2.) Ignortant of the different branches of the U.S. government (the Executive, Judicial and Legislative), and how they carry out governmental power and functions.
3.) Ignorant of foreign affairs, policy and International relations.

This is why most contributors comments are appalling and shameful as it shows the low level of national awareness as compared with other developed even under developed countries of the world.

Unfortunately, I do not think there will be peace for Iraq. The Sunnis don't like having to share power, and they really don't like the fact that the territory where most of the Sunnis live doesn't have oil. The Kurds and Shiites have oil. I wouldn't be surprised if Sadr decides to stir up trouble as well.
What a mess.

Under the guise of illegal weapons and other lies about mass murder of civilians, paying suicide bombers and using chemical weapons against the Kurds, US forces took power from the rightfully elected government and had it’s elected leader Sadam executed though a Mickey Mouse court.

We also murdered his innocent successors Uday and Qusay. And forced the peaceful nation of Iraq to submit to the evils of choice and Democracy. What next will we force capitalism?

Now Democracy is slowly spreading to places like Iran because of the US intervention. How much of this barbarism can the world take?

Obama was right to tear off his US Flag lapel.

Obama you phony, you were against the surge which ultimately led to this day and said you would have voted against the initial invasion but now will take credit for removing the troops and not thank Bush for anything. I hope Americans can see through this empty suit.

obamareport.blogspot.com   June 30th, 2009 4:03 pm ET

I do not believe the surge will work. only a complete surrender and withdrawal will help us defeat the enemy.

Michael   June 30th, 2009 4:03 pm ET

Fist off the war is not over we just no longer have bases within the cities second the President everyone is thanking would be Bush as he is the one that signed the agreement to move out of the cities not Obama.

history repeats   June 30th, 2009 4:01 pm ET

the surge was the idea of people that the repubs DID NOT LISTEN TO! iraq started to fall apart the american people got angry and the idiots in the bush administration finally gave the reins to the right people. dont thank bush for ANYTHING he did the only thing he had left after screwing everything up.

gl, From Pittsburgh   June 30th, 2009 4:00 pm ET

U.S. Troop Withdrawal was signed by Obama not Bush!

How can he even comment? He would have left years ago. Actually he would rather have kept Saddam in power. Then he was against the surge. He did not sign the withdrawal agreement. He was not committed yet he takes credit for it.

Jim   June 30th, 2009 3:56 pm ET

Thank you President George W. Bush!

A great victory for our country, and the world over.

you give bush credit? do you think he would have signed the withdrawel if americans didnt wake up to the idiotic war this president put us in? would he have signed it if the republicans didnt get crushed in 2006? pleeeease. if somebody shoots you and then gives you a band aid you dont honor him!!!

Ceasar the Great   June 30th, 2009 3:55 pm ET

So now that it worked you are for it? Sorry President Obama, this is truly the work of those before you that actually knew how to end this. You just started something in Afgahnastan (sp?) that you have no idea how to end. This new war will make Iraq look easy.

Claudia in Houson   June 30th, 2009 3:53 pm ET

U.S. soldiers have bravely given so much to the Iraqi people, now it's time for them to stand on their own, our soldiers aren't babysitters. Iraq will always have their share of "bad" actors and those who will stand against them, let them do their job.

jaye   June 30th, 2009 3:53 pm ET

Mr. President, I would not jump for joy so soon. I would give the Iraq's time for it to sink in and I am sure you are smart enough to know the history of this country.

My fear is that soon, the oposing sides will be at war with each other. Guess who will be blamed for the implosion in Iraq? You!

Though it was not your choice to invade Iraq; it is now your war and IF things turn out negative, you can bet your bottom dollar, the Republicans will blame you.

Listen very well...Dick Cheney and John McCain will be the first ones to take you to court. Remember the favorite word? Impeach. Yeah, that one. Keep your fingers crossed and hope, Iraq will not go to hell before 2016.

This was reported by the media yesterday, why wasn't the Whitehouse response as timely as it is to other news, i.e. healthcare legislation that passed the House that was sold by him. Because the much maligned Bush adminstration orchestrated the withdrawal, not him. He campaigned on a false promise, the withdrawal agreement was done by the time he sold the citizens on 'Change we can't believe in'.... Watch the healthe care costs go up now, and for those of us who earn under that magic $250,000, we are going to get burned with a tax on the benefits we do receive and are already paying a portion of. Ask the Canadians and Great Britain about their government plans, you will enlightened!

The right will say Obama, the left will say Bush/Cheney. We had no right to bomb and invade them. NO WMD, JUST LIES TO FILL THE POCKETS OF American Terrorists.

Why is no one concerned with the fact that Obama is buddying up with and supporting the likes of Chavez, Ortega, Castro, King Abdullah and now Zelaya of Honduras, and has also tried to suck up to Ahmadinejad???

After a full week of indecision, he then decided he didn't want to "meddle" in Iran's clearly sham election of its thug leader, but within hours he called for the support and return of Zelaya, despite his illegal attempt to thwart the Honduras constitution and become dictator for life (with the support of Chavez)???

Is this what we can expect Obama to do in the U.S.? He makes me "very concerned"!

Iraq will have to stand on its own two feet... and they deserve the opportunity to do it without world interference, but rather support! They have had more than enough of war... I suspect they are ready for peace and demoncracy in their country. I pray that is the government that wins out in this struggle for freedom.
