Sanford contradicts himself on meetings with mistress

Gov. Mark Sanford has said it's better for him to keep his governorship to 'learn lessons.'
Gov. Mark Sanford has said it's better for him to keep his governorship to 'learn lessons.'

COLUMBIA, South Carolina (CNN) - South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford met with his Argentinian mistress more times than he originally admitted, Sanford spokesman Joel Sawyer confirmed Tuesday.

After returning from a secret trip to Argentina unknown to his staff or wife last week, Sanford admitted to an extramarital affair, and said that he had seen his mistress three times in the past year.

But he told The Associated Press he had met with Maria Belen Chapur seven times, including five visits in the past 12 months.

Two of their meetings in the past year included multiple-night stays in New York, Sanford told the AP.

Sanford told the AP he met with Chapur a third time in New York on what was intended to be a goodbye visit. Sanford was accompanied by his spiritual adviser, the AP reported.

Sanford also told the AP of what he said were two non-romantic encounters - including their first meeting in 2001 in Uruguay and getting coffee in New York during the 2004 Republican National Convention.

"There was some kind of connection from the very beginning," he said to the AP.

If Giuliani is really considering running for governor of NY, he make want to have a second thought about that. His cross dressing days may not be over.

Whether if you are a republican or democrat – if you are a known liar, what other things can you possibly be lying about?

You have principals and you stand firm by them, but you give in to your selfishness. How many other times has he given in? It is our human nature, and I am guility of it too. This is why these companies became rich and took all the money for themselves.

Does forgiveness for the affair include keeping his job after stealing taxpayers' money?

Does this woman have security clearance? Seems to me that she is/was a political science major and a journalist. Does she have the potential to blackmail the Governor and/or spy either against him or for him? If that Governor can "gush" the type of "sweet nothings" in e-mails, imagine what he can "gush in a "live" attendance. I don't think he has broken off the affair yet either.

He had a press conference to come clean with everyone and he still lied when he had the opportunity; he really should resign because he seems to have lost the confidence of a lot of people.

The current modern day Republican disgust me, their a shame to all Republicans and are the epitemy of "HYPOCRASY"......

To bring shame upon Bill Clinton, and to stand firm in opposition to those who want Mr. Sanford to practice what he preaches is just another example of todays Republican.......

They have bought dishonor to not only Republicans, but Americans as a whole......

What a Hyprocrit; Vitter, Craig, Sanford, and the rest of the Republican hypocrits should take the advice they so self righteously gave to Bill Clinton.

I changed my party affiliation to "Independent."

By the way, the man the Republicans don't like is a great father and husband. Isn't that what "Family Values" are all about folks?

I didn't vote for Obama the first time; however, I would take him over any of the Republicans, especially Pawlenty.

    6."Neither shall you commit adultery."
Adultery is the breaking of the holy bond between husband and wife, and is thus a sacrilege. This commandment includes not just the act of adultery, but lust as well.

well he's gonna have to answer to all of the visits and whether he used his office (and expense account) as a cover while carrying on an illicit affair.

But if he can get through that, showing he did not misuse state money, then I really think everybody should leave him alone about his lover. Somehow, I think he's gonna get nailed anyway and I'm sorry for that.

Just more collateral damage for the GOP as they fight for righteous survival. They'll crucify Sanford and let Palin keep up her dance-monkey-dance bit ...

    Jeff,

    1. What is this "Democrat" party you speak of? Oh, you mean the "Democratic" party? It would be nice if one day Republicans could drop this childish namecalling of the "Democratic" party and act like adults.

    2. Speaking of "acting like adults", it's funny seeing Republicans playing the "who cares" card when it comes to one of their own running around on his wife. However, the fact that Sanford used taxpayer dollars to fly off for his trysts with the woman he met on the internet, it now appears that he has already lied about just how many times he used taxpayer dollars to fly off for his trysts with the woman he met on the internet.

Unfortunately, now South Carolina is probably going to have to conduct a full investigation to determine just how much money Sanford stole in order to facilitate his mid-life crisis.

Hey Jeff, if CNN is just a "water carrier apologist for the democrat party," then what are you doing wasting your time here? The right-wing fixation on the "liberal" media is hilarious. But personally I'm glad that you're stuck on these red-herring issues while the Democratic party takes on the real problems facing this country.

One lesson he should have learned is to STOP GIVING DETAILS!!!!! Details are not helping the situation. Plus, it's NOT the public's business. We don't need the details. Does it matter if he saw her two times or twelve???? If I were him and I wanted to stay in office, I'd stop talking about it and focus on my job as govenor. One has nothing to do with the other.

Gov. Sanford is only human. You can't blame him for falling in love. Only a Repugliklan hypocrit would cast the first stone by violating the biblical principle of forgiveness
