(CNN) – A senior State Department official said Wednesday that Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will not go to Moscow for President Obama's meetings with Russian officials.

A senior White House official said the reason Secretary Clinton is skipping the trip is because the intensive physical therapy sessions that she's been undergoing due to her broken elbow would have been too difficult to replicate during a grueling trip overseas. The White House official said it was unclear who will stand in for Clinton, though typically in a situation like this the Deputy Secretary of State would travel in her place. The Secretary's number two at State is James Steinberg, a former deputy national security adviser in the Clinton administration.

Why do people have to be so cruel. An elbow is a complicated part of the anatomy and doesn't heal as fast as some other parts of the body. If those who produce vile comments think they are cute, they sure "ain't"; and if one were vindictive as they appear to be, I wonder how they would feel if they broke their elbows. Deputy Secretaries of government agencies are quite capable of stepping into the heads of their departments' roles. The Internet sure gives people chances to show their true colors. Sad, sad folk.

She should just go to Sarah Palin's house in alaska, she can see MOscow from there! !

I cared for my mother when she fell and broke her right elbow. It required 4-5 surgeries and cadaver tissue to re stabilize the joint. I also know how painful the healing process is and the intense therapy.

these people bashing her for the care needed and treatment, go suck an egg. break your elbow and require surgery and see how fun it is.

Get well Hilliary. An injury to someone regardless of political party is not something to mock.

She just broke her elbow and is not going. So what? Isn't there enough drama in the world already, we need to create more?

Too bad Hellary can't go and stay... but, alas, Russia has immigration laws that they enforce.

Get better soon Hillary! You have been doing a great job so far, so I can't wait for you to get back out there!

Get well soon, Secretary of State Clinton!

Have a speedy recovery SOS Clinton. You should really consider getting P.T. at my facility. You'll be back on the road in no time.

Where is my post cnn. I don't blame Hillary for not going. She is probably tired of telling him to take a stance on something or let her take a stance. After she asks him to take a stance on Iran he finally does and doesn't give her the heads up sad!. She will travel this month but without Obama. I don't think she wants to be out of the country with him again.

No need to go we have socialism here now.

tess   July 1st, 2009 4:41 pm ET

it is evident to me that clinton is intentionally distancing herself from o'bama because she knows his policies are turning into a disaster and she wants no part of his failing stratigies – this would not be in her self interest when she challanges him in 2012 which she WILL do! isn't it obvious to everyone that she is still out for herself and she is watching in glee as o'bama self destructs?!?

Lucky for us that all the men and women in uniform with purple hearts are not taking Security of State Clinton and staying at home but continue to serve our country and protect the greatest country in the world.

Wonder if BO will be taking her "Reset" button along with him instead ?

Obama's foreign policy is a disaster.......   July 1st, 2009 4:28 pm ET

1. Israel continues to build housing,

2. Iran mocks Obama and continues their nuke program and steps up their military aide to Iraqi Shia,

3. N. Korea laughs at Obama's threats and continues their nuke program,

4. Al Qaeda is setting up new bases in Somailia,

and on and on and on.

Hillary is being forced by.....   July 1st, 2009 4:23 pm ET

Obama to take a back seat.

Evidently she's out of step with the Obamofsky plan to redistribute wealth.

phoenix86   July 1st, 2009 4:19 pm ET

Perhaps she can use the time to figure out foreign affairs. The Honduran "coup" prevented a political "coup" backed by Hugo Chavez that would have violated Honduran constitutional provisions.

The protesters in Iran are protesting against tyranny, yet she and Obama side with the dictators there as well.

The Obama/Clinton foreign policy team may be unified, but it is a FIASCO.

I wish the sexist haters would go away. When will it be OK for a good woman to be powerful and be taken seriously?

LIP   July 1st, 2009 4:06 pm ET

Thank goodness she wasn't elected President. Whatever would we have done without her able to answer the phone at 3 am.

Randolph Carter   July 1st, 2009 4:03 pm ET

Cue the republican responses pointing out that she doesn't have to travel to see a communist country...... Have a nice day, comrades!
