Fellow Republicans urge Bachmann not to boycott 2010 Census

Rep. Michele Bachmann has said she will not provide much of the more detailed information called for in the 2010 Census form.
Rep. Michele Bachmann has said she will not provide much of the more detailed information called for in the 2010 Census form.

WASHINGTON (CNN) - A trio of Republican congressmen are calling on a GOP colleague to completely fill out her 2010 Census form, following her vow to provide only basic information about her family.

In a statement released Wednesday, Republican Reps. Patrick McHenry of North Carolina, Lynn Westmoreland of Georgia, and John Mica of Florida said that "boycotting the constitutionally-mandated census is illogical, illegal and not in the best interest of our country."

Bachmann expressed concerns last week about the level of detail demanded in the census form and questioned the federal government's ability to protect her family's personal data.

"What guarantees do the American people have that hackers won't get into the system?" Bachmann asked in an interview with FOX News Channel.

Bachmann also claimed in the interview that ACORN, a group that has been criticized by the GOP for its voter registration practices, would be employed by the government to collect census data.

"I don't have a lot of confidence in ACORN going door to door asking personal information, handing it over to the federal government - and will the American people be safe and secure in their information?" she added.

Bachmann did emphasize that she was not advocating a widespread boycott, but rather telling people how she personally planned to address the census.

Still, the congressmen - who all serve on the Information Policy, Census, and National Archives subcommittee - urged her to fill out all of her census form.

"We share Ms. Bachmann's concerns about ACORN's involvement in the 2010 Census and will continue pressuring the Bureau to follow their own guidelines for partnering organizations and dump ACORN," the congressmen wrote. "However, we can not emphasize enough how important it is for every individual to fill out their census forms.

"Every elected representative in this country should feel a responsibility to encourage full participation in the census. To do otherwise is to advocate for a smaller share of federal funding for our constituents. Boycotting the constitutionally-mandated census is illogical, illegal and not in the best interest of our country.

"The unfortunate irony is that Ms. Bachmann's boycott only increases the likelihood that ACORN-recruited census takers will be dispatched to her constituents' homes. Anyone who completes and returns their census form will remove any need for a census taker to visit their residence."

David Dziok, a Bachmann spokesman, sidestepped the call for the congresswoman to fill out her census form, and said she looked forward to working with her fellow Republicans to prevent ACORN from working for the census.

"We appreciate their views and hope to be able to work with them to keep ACORN - which has earned public mistrust through its repeated voter registration fraud - out of the census," he said.

Shelly Lowe, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Census Bureau, said that ACORN is "not conducting the census" and gave assurances that all census workers will go through a background check.

What is it with the GOP embracing all these women who are quite attractive (Palin, Bachmann, Carrie Prejean) but completely bereft of any sort of intelligence?

After all the fuss, I decided to see what questions are asked on the census. I figured because of the ruckus, the questions would be related to social security numbers, salary, and an assortment of other very personal questions which would've ticked me off. I was surprised that the questions are very basic. I have a copy of my family's 1900 census and the questions look the same......names of household, ethnicity, and age. What is Bachmann screaming about? I checked into this myself first without getting mad or upset. But what about others who take Ms. Bachmann at her word without checking out the facts first? It's like yelling fire in a crowded theatre.

Is anyone surprised by this level of idiocy in the GOP ranks? There is no meritocracy in their ranks; they are elected through lobbocracy, PACocracy, and lunocracy.

She should tell everyone in her district to ignore the census, over and over again. She's not even smart enough to understand that it's her district that will be cut, including her seat in congress. What could be better! This is one person who is truly an idiot and she needs to go, one way or another.

I personally will provide only the information I deem necessary for them to count me and the other residentsin my home.
There is information they want that they do not need to accomplish that goal. Screw Them!

Right wing hysteria at its best.
And all the bloggers whine on about ACORN. Any arrests or convictions? In California, the arrest was a Republican operative who lied about where he lived and committed fraud–nobody from ACORN.

And when it comes to hysteria, there is no one like Michele Bachmann. I loved her idea during the campaign to investigate all Democratic congressmen for "anti-American activities".
And you wonder why the right wing continues to flounder and look foolish.

I hope this idiot manages to get people in her district not to completly fill in their forms. If she is able to do that then the population will drop and there is a great possibility that a district may vanish and fortunately for us it may well be her district. So please Rep. Bachmann, send in your census form incomplete for the good of the nation.

Doesn't it bother anyone on the eve of the 4th of July that our form of democracy can produce an elected official as stupid as this woman?

Democracy's failure is its abject inability to honorably rid itself of the Bachman's (Bush-Cheney's) that sneak through the process aided by voters that haven't even read a book in their lives.

I suppose that in a democracy you get what you deserve...but does America really deserve her?

Michelle Bachman is an utter buffoon. She sees nefarious Obama led conspiracies in the simple constitutionally mandated process of the census. Was it a socialist or communist plot during Reagan or Bush I's terms? She never fails to amaze in her displays of total ignorance. Why did the people of the 6th district in Minnesota elect this moron? Someone should really make sure that she is not allowed near any sharp objects.

I do think that the government gets carried away with the level of detail requested in the census. I'm sure the bureaucrats feel all the info is necessary but a lot is really questionable.
I personally think that the need and purpose of the census should be examined with a view to eliminating it. It seems to be a lot of money and effort for purely statistic gathering.

Let's hope no one in her District fills out the census form and then when there's not enough people in her District it will be absorbed into the neighboring District and then she won't be a congresswoman any more. Yeah, that's the ticket. I mean how dumb can you be......to blather yourself out of office.

I, for one, am not going to complete a census form. I will not participate in it unless forced to. Though I live in NJ, I kept my PA driver's license and may relocate part time to PA for tax purposes as well. Besides, no way do I want NJ to get credit for my presence there. If you are a republican in a red state, you may want to avoid participating as well.

This is an important census that can re-shape the electorate. I agree that having ACORN be any part of it will cause irreversable damage. ACORN is a criminal organization and should be banned from any federally funded program. I do agree that the Representative needs to follow the law, but if she is willing to take the punishment to fight for her beliefs, she should stick to her guns. This is what America is about. God bless you and your battle Rep. Bachmann
