Sanford ally: Governor remains 'defiant'

Sanford has brushed aside calls for his resignation.
Sanford has brushed aside calls for his resignation.

WASHINGTON (CNN) - South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford remains "defiant" in the face of calls for him to resign in the wake of his admission last week that he engaged in an extramarital affair, a close Sanford ally tells CNN.

The source, a South Carolina Republican, said Sanford showed no signs Wednesday of stepping down even as support for from longtime backers begins to slip. The GOP source, who has known the governor for decades and spoke freely about the situation on the condition of anonymity, said there are concerns among Sanford allies about his ability to lead the state, given the recent public comments about his wife and mistress.

The source said he hopes that Sanford will leave office on his own, but suggested the governor could go down fighting.

"Honestly, I think he could go down in the ugliest, messiest way," said the source, who added that he would be "shocked if [the governor] quit, because it doesn't fit his profile."

The source pointed to the governor's history of going it alone against his own party in Washington as a congressman and during his time as governor, most recently over the federal stimulus money fight.

"He has always been a guy who has stuck with what he believes in, even if everyone else is against him," the source said.

I am starting to like this guy. I think his wife drove him to this point. He seems like a guy who would not do this unless his wife left him no choice.

Hey GOP, given how guys are constantly calling for the impeachment of Dems, I must assume that you like impeaching people. Well, here you have a guy with a mountain of reasons why he should be impeached. Go ahead, have a ball.

The guy's an idiot. Why would the people of S Carolina put up with such a loser? When will the American people wake up? We have the best of the best in the White House, and some flunky for an Argentinian inabler governing S Carolina. Shame on the voters in that State. That Southern mentality is not dead, I guess.

    Gary's comment is:

Haaaa !! little boys that get caught with their pants down, are hard to
give in to understanding they are in trouble and should just face the
music. In this case leave office, as he cannot get much done for the
state with all this over his head every day.

This arrogant creep is all about me, me me!

He will now force the legislative branch to impeach his sorry carcass.

Dereliction of duty is a serious offense and should not be tolerated, too bad this clown is going to drag his family through the mud with him just because he has a "Messiah complex".

Yesterday, it was I will try and "fall back in love with my wife"??? How in the name of all that is Holy, can you say that about your and the mother of your children in a national forum!!!

And his wife needs to yank this "family values christian" into reality and leave this clown. If she continues to allow him to make such public comments about her, knowing her own kids are hearing this, then she is no longer a strong woman and is fast becoming a doormat, and no better than the "stand by your man" Stepford wives of the past everyone was congratulting her on NOT begin like.

Someone needs to show this "christian creep" that actions have consequences.

  8. The Party of NO stood calmly by for 8 year while the shrub raped and pillaged America, so, why would we listen to you now?

This lib for one, hopes this heel, stays in power.

I can just hear the DNC ads in 2010, first one will start out with Sanford, Gingrich and Ensign condemning dems for having feet of clay, then it will fade to the sobbing apologies and end with the silent print "WWJD"?

It certainly will stop all that santctimonius, self-righteous, holier than thou blather from the neo-con "christians"!

He shouldn't quit. Life has a way of coming back to bite you and he put the health and wealth of his constituents at risk when he refused the stimuli...but there is more....he committed adultry..an offense to God. Remember though, God is a God of grace and mercy, and because of Jesus , forgiveness. He has put it all out there....he is a shell right now...but a righteous man can come out of this if his HEART is right. Your soul mate is not you lusts.. your wife is...the one you made a committment to before our Maker...now ..please get out of the media and let things work out!

If the state assembly does not want they can impeach him, but and the state will gain little for Lt. governor Bauer is nothing more than a undisciplined teenager in a mans body. He is unfit to serve as governor, so it one or the other of misfits that is your choice.

You could impeach both of them and take the third in line whoever that maybe and come out ahead, otherwise it does not really make a difference.

The governor of South Carolina has the least power of any other governor in the USA. The power is really held by the general assembly so it does not really make a difference which of the others get the pay for being in the governor's office.

Governor Sanford is determined to DESTROY South Carolina political reputation and the Governor's Office all because he's one SELFISH POLITICIAN who continues to think of himself and NOT about what's best for the State of South Carolina. Unbelievable.

I don't understand why Mark Sanford doesn't just RESIGN and go to Argentina to be with his "Soul Mate". It's very obvious that Mark Sanford LOVES his Argentina mistress. It's written ALL over his face and in his voice whenever he speaks. He needs to RESIGN and get on with his life.

This just proves how INDIGNANT Republicans can be whenever they've screwed up royally.

How can this man look at himself in the mirror or his family? THERE IS NO EXCUSE,NONE! But he is allowed to pass Judgement of the people of South Carolina! He thinks because he Governs a state he can do as he pleases! The people of South Carolina should through him out. I could not imagine what his wife is going through..If the Republican Party allows him to remain Governor they all need to move to Crawford Texas or down were Bush moved in Dallas,he is lower than a piece of.........................

Yeah, Sanford believes he should be able to lay every woman he can, whenever he wants, and never face the consequences that real men face. He is going to stick it out and bring the republicans down with him in 2010. Sanford / Palin 2012 plz.

Sanford is an arrogant moron and should do the right thing and resign. How pathetic to treat your wife in such a manner as to say "you will try to fall in love with her again" and that your mistress "is your soul mate." Mrs. Sanford should tell him NOT to do her any favors and kick him to the curb. The ONLY way he could show the people of South Carolina that he truly has their best interest at heart, would be to step down.

Get his a– out of office. If you lie you cheat, if you cheat you steal. He has done all three. He needs to be relieved of his duties and made to pay back the money he used to take all these trips and pay for days he was not at work.

I think he should resign, especially after he disappeared for a few days without notice. However, I can see why some politicians remain silent about their adultery because it opens a big can of worms. In California, Rep. Loretta Sanchez has experienced something similar taking up with her married military escort, while she was still married to Stephen Brixey. She later divorced, and the escort, Jack Einwechter separted from his wife (divorce is pending)...but what makes her case unique is that Einwechter lobbies on behalf of defense and homeland security issues. Guess which committees Rep. Loretta Sanchez sits on?

. . . And to think, Republican Governor Mark Sanford is a 'role model' and advocate of James Dobson's "Family Research Council" and "Focus on the Family" Christian Conservative organizations. Just more proof of HYPOCRISY from right-wing Christian conservatives.

What exactly IS the governor's profile. Quitting 'doesn't fit' it. What does? The SC Congress needs to grow some balls and oust him immediately...before he costs them any more money. Problem is he has nowhere to go but Argentina. Wifey probably won't even give him the money for a ticket and he can't get one from his office. Too bad so sad
