WASHINGTON (CNN) - A majority of Americans think that North Korea represents a very serious threat, and nearly three-quarters believe that country has missiles which could strike the United States, according to a new national poll.

The CNN/Opinion Research Corporation survey released Thursday indicates that North Korea is arguably the biggest threat to the U.S. in the public's mind.

"Fifty-two percent say that country is a very serious threat, higher than the 43 percent who feel that way about Iran and much higher than the 20 percent who feel that way about China or the 11 percent who think Russia threatens the U.S," says CNN Polling Director Keating Holland.

Nearly three out of four questioned in the poll believe North Korea has a missile that could reach at least as far as Hawaii. More than nine in 10 favor military action if North Korea does attempt to hit the U.S. with a missile.

North Korea test-fired a fourth short-range missile off its east coast Thursday, South Korea's Yonhap News Agency reported. South Korea's Defense Ministry had earlier confirmed three launches, but could not immediately be reached about the fourth reported missile.

The CNN/Opinion Research Corporation poll was conducted June 26-28, before Thursday's test firings by North Korea. In the survey 1,026 adult Americans were questioned by telephone. The poll's sampling error is plus or minus 3 percentage points.

North Korea?!?!?!

Seriously?!?!?!!?

They are the LAST thing we need to fear.

China will nuke them in a second.

Tim P   July 2nd, 2009 11:55 am ET

How sad that those 3/4 of people polled are cowardly and have no faith in the fact that our military will defend our shores against any missile attack and retaliate with a barrage never before seen on the face of the planet.

Champly   July 2nd, 2009 11:51 am ET

Oh lordy...no doubt this poll will cause BHO to double up on his hand-wringing time over this issue. That will scare the North Koreans pelosiless no doubt.

Bill   July 2nd, 2009 11:45 am ET

Iran, North Korea, China and Russia are nothing.....the biggest threat to America, by far, is Obama!!! $2 trillion in deficit given away to friends of Obama, wealthy bankers, toxic assets and unionists. Obama is the ANTI-CHRIST!!!

Kirsten, LA   July 2nd, 2009 11:41 am ET

I have faith in God and his hand is on President Obama.

Brandon   July 2nd, 2009 11:36 am ET

Yay for the paranoia of the masses!

Mike   July 2nd, 2009 11:34 am ET

And obama cuts missile defense. Change you can believe in.

New Yorker   July 2nd, 2009 11:33 am ET

. Those who are old enough/know a bit about history may remember what Lenin said about us falling like a ripe plum. Unfortunately, the youngsters who have been raised in the government school system and liberal colleges are clueless. This is why Obama receives his greatest support from them. Where does the greatest threat lie? In well-meaning minds of the Socialist/Communist community organizers and politicians in this country. Is this comment too great a threat to CNN?

johnnie   July 2nd, 2009 11:30 am ET

north korea ,is not a threat to the united states and that cnn poll is bogus, who are you polling cnn, your only calling your base.north korea is no match for the most powerful country on earth, the reason cnn is using this rigth wing scare tactics, is because of president obama , trying to strike fear in the american people. we wipe them off the face of the earth if they tried a threat, they dont have technology to even lanch an attack. who are these 1,026 americans that you are polling, i tell you who it is the right wing, cnn needs to be honest with the american people and stop this fear attack. north korea is not a threat america.period.

kishen c.rao   July 2nd, 2009 11:26 am ET

we said the same about Iraq and poured lot of money and still paying leaving our problems like fixing health care, energy independence, and economy etc, totally unattended....no more sacrifice...first nation, then others...These republicans keep nagging...ok

Ryan Indy   July 2nd, 2009 11:26 am ET

Yep, and Obama is doing NOTHING. He is all talk (with his telemprompter) and no action. When Bush was in office other countries might not have liked him but they respected him and feared him, with Obama they neither like him nor Respect him. God help us all over the next 3 1/2 yrs.

Rick CT   July 2nd, 2009 11:25 am ET

A U.S. official told CNN "the missile firings come as no surprise."

"The North has been carrying out provocative acts for some time," said the official, who did not want to be named for security reasons. "North Korea needs to stop this type of activity and return to the process of bringing about a denuclearization of the Korean peninsula."

I'm sure that'll do it !!! We're on top of this now (along with the UN).

David   July 2nd, 2009 11:23 am ET

Earlier this year North Korea conducted long range missile tests and missed their target by a couple of thousand miles. When I was a kid, we used the term "Can't hit the broad side of a barn" for anyone who was a lousy marksman. Well, North Korea can't hit the broad side of a continent. They might be a credible threat in ten years but for now they're just an annoying joke.

jim   July 2nd, 2009 11:18 am ET

When I was young I would have laughed at the thought of North Korea being a threat to the U.S. Having witnessed the American government's (not the troops') performance in Korea, Vietnam, Afghanistan, and Iraq, I am not nearly so confident. Sometimes I wonder how we prevailed in Grenada !!!

Open Your 3rd Eye   July 2nd, 2009 11:17 am ET

-I AM SO TIRED OF THIS-

North Korea is a TINY country which does nothing but TALK, TALK, TALK...

You people need to grow a pair and stop fearing every single tiny threat or dislike toward our country.

THINK FOR A MOMENT:

If North Korea actually attacked the United States they know good and well they would be (as Hillary stated) OBLITERATED!

They don't stand a chance in Hades against us and THEY KNOW IT.

Everything you are witnessing is just for show, no action.

They can set-off their little firecrackers all day every day as far as I'm concerned. I would not lose a wink of sleep.

America listen to me for a moment, this world will always be filled with men with dark hearts. The United States, or any other country, will not EVER wipe evil off the globe. That task is impossible for man because it is not the job of man.

Live your lives in peace, if others choose war trust me when I tell you God will deal with them in His own time. It is not our place.

STOP ACTING LIKE CHILDREN, PLEASE.

Right Leaning Independent   July 2nd, 2009 11:11 am ET

American Politicians are a far more serious threat to America!!!

Idea   July 2nd, 2009 11:10 am ET

I saw an interview with a guy who lives in that part of the world that discussed the propaganda effort being made against the North Koreans. They associate Jung as being a god. With the anti-american sentiment they are grown up with embedded in their culture any direct contact militarily simply will not work. (If you thought the insurgency was bad in Iraq, would be nothing compared to what happens in N. Korea). I think the US should 'unofficially' join this movement, and fund more 'balloon propaganda drops' that the South Koreans have undertaken. There needs to be an underground educational movement in North Korea. Once it's citizens learn the truth of the outside world and the hypocrisy of it's leaders, they will become N. Korea's greatest enemy.

John Black Hills/SD   July 2nd, 2009 11:08 am ET

Why is it that China is no where to be seen or heard from with scolding words to their step child N. Korea. We should try to manipulate the trajectory of N. Korea's missile tests so that they land in N. Korea's supreme leaders prized alcohol supplies. A person going through withdrawal symptoms will likely give their keys of the family rocket to the distillery who delivers the drug. If we just get the leadership to smoke some good weed, and the fighting goes out like a flame in a vacuum.

Mississippi Mike   July 2nd, 2009 11:08 am ET

North Korea is depleting it's missile supply by shooting them in our general direction. Obama is depleting our missile supply by dismantling them. Are they both hell-bent on the destruction of the US? Sure looks like it.

Pa Santigie   July 2nd, 2009 11:02 am ET

North Korea posses no credible threat to the US....this is just another imagined threat the US wants to create in the minds of the people.
No country in the world would attack the US... and risk the end of their existence. No! Al Qaeda was not a country. Even the most erratic of despots knows in the recesses of their mind that an attack on the US will bring a swift end to their life.
All North Korea is doing is posturing to keep the outside world from know the directions the winds of change are blowing. they do not want any outsiders influencing that change. which makes all the sense to me.
So all this hoopla about getting prepared for a possible attack on the US is mere propaganda. If the US is does not have the necessary assets in place to prevent such an attack then the government must tell us why all the militarization of space with satellites and communications gadgets all over the world. And must tell us why we spend

patNY   July 2nd, 2009 11:01 am ET

Count this Liberal Democrat as 100% in favor of a full military strike against North Korea even if any of its missle tests come within 500 miles of Hawaii or even Alaska....even would say, nuke 'em!

Thomas   July 2nd, 2009 10:59 am ET

Polls have their use but this is not one of them. Really, what do many of the citizens know about North Korea other than what they read in the media?

Aaron, Maryland   July 2nd, 2009 10:57 am ET

So, are you going to tell us if any of N Korea's launch tests ACTUALLY have the range to hit us, or is the Reality of the situation of no importance. . . just public's opinion of it?
100% of 3 year olds in my home think when you die, you can "just start the game over" 100% thats public mandate.
So, no supportive information just opinion. I guess thats good reporting.

New Yorker   July 2nd, 2009 10:56 am ET

The biggest threat to this country is what Obama and the liberals are planning and implementing. Once this nation is weakened by their ideology and legislation, we won't have the strength or means to fight off any threats. If things don't turn around North Korea won't have to lift a finger against us; they'll just kick back and laugh.

awaitingliberalizationbyCNN   July 2nd, 2009 10:56 am ET

And what is Husseins and Clinton's tough response to these fruitcakes? They are going to request NKorean ships stop and allow inspection, but if NKorea says no, they won't do anything. In addition, Hillary is going to write a nasty note. This is administration has wet noodle tendencies. What a bunch of fools.

Freedom of Speech   July 2nd, 2009 10:56 am ET

Heck for they were in 1949-51 also but did we do anything besides run. Just like we're doing in Iraq. Especially since they were not even the ones we should have attacked. I'm tired of this bullcrap. Don't get in the ring even with Muhammad Ali unless you're determined to win otherwise stand there and take the beating you deserve. America is so stup[id. Now we have Irran, Korea, Afghanistan, Nothing settled in Iraq, Syria, Libya, Pakistan Sudia Aradia after our tails but yet we're turning tail once more. Ther is no respect for America the great savior of demorcracy only money grabbing, sex-crazed politicians and hippie's children with no stomash for war are running this country. Wait until they're beheaded by Osama Bin Laden.

lxm   July 2nd, 2009 10:50 am ET

before all the hate and discontent starts flying this is an extremely important issue, It seems as though CNN does not allow comments on certain issues as it might upset the Almighty Obama. and his screwed up agenda!!!

Eric   July 2nd, 2009 10:50 am ET

So, when it comes to healthcare, you present 51% as "barely half the country". But, when it comes to fear mongering, excuse me, national security, you present 52% as "the majority of the US".

Great journalism, CNN!

Fred NJ   July 2nd, 2009 10:49 am ET

Almost as much of a threat as our current administration!

Maddoff goes to jail for ripping off a few billion dollars while BO is hailed as a hero while ripping off TRILLION$.

Who's the bigger fish and threat?!

Once You Vote Black   July 2nd, 2009 10:49 am ET

I dont like the idea of them saying they will bomb Hawaii, and wipe us from the face of the map. We should get them for that.

WhoCares?   July 2nd, 2009 10:49 am ET

How are they a serious threat to the US?

Tough talk?

N. Korea only exists because of China. As soon as they become more of a detrement than a positive to China....they won't have China's protection to fall back on.

If they actually launch a missle at another country...they will be wiped off the face of the planet by the collective world...including China.

Dutch/Bad Newz, VA   July 2nd, 2009 10:48 am ET

Besides for Al Queda, N. Korea is the only "credible" threat. I'm not worried about them firing a missle in this direction because I know we'll shoot it down. Honestly, I hope the N. Koreans are that dumb to try it. That will give us all the more reason for us to bomb them until they are obliterated.

RR   July 2nd, 2009 10:48 am ET

North Korea is lauging in Obama's face. They have no repsect for him, and he has no idea what to do.

Bombs Away   July 2nd, 2009 10:44 am ET

Was Obama included in the poll? He doesn't seem to concerned that a NK missle could reach his grandparents' house.

James M. Holmes   July 2nd, 2009 10:43 am ET

North Korea is the biggest "Paper Tiger" on the planet... "Little Kim" is nothing but another two-bit tyrant... Keep an eye on them, but don't let them scare you! That is exactly what N. Korea is trying to do... just trying to get some respect from the "big kids" on the block!

Henry Miller   July 2nd, 2009 10:41 am ET

"Fifty-two percent say that country [North Korea] is a very serious threat..."

Thereby proving that fifty-two percent of Americans are incompetent to assess the threat.

Chuck Paisley   July 2nd, 2009 10:40 am ET

Not to worry! POTUS has everything in control...

scooter   July 2nd, 2009 10:40 am ET

We should be worried about it, also we should be worried about afgahanastan. but it doesnt include any WacoJacko news so it is just left on the back page.

Hugo   July 2nd, 2009 10:40 am ET

Yes, those nasty old North Koreans with their nuclear proliferation! I'll tell you though as bad as they are you really have to watch those old Hondurans, the nerve of them enforcing their constitutional laws from being over run by a potential dictator. Lifetime extension of holding political office by one person like Hugo Chavez, what socialist or Marxist wouldn't want that? No wonder Obama is so concerned with Honduras, what if this horrible practice of cutting the head off of an oppressive or incompetent government were to spread to America?

GI Joe   July 2nd, 2009 10:38 am ET

Hmmm – of those 1026 brilliant people polled, how many actually sit in on the daily briefings and have direct access to all the data about these things?

Waiting ........................ chirp chirp

That's what I thought. Another useless poll of ignorant (not stupid) people leading the national "news" (read that as National Inquirer type propaganda).

Stuffit   July 2nd, 2009 10:36 am ET

A public opinion poll of 1,026 "adult Americans" , of whom half probably can't find North Korea on a map, does not a National Intelligence Estimate (NIE) make.

How many of those polled know what the capitol of North Korea is, the name of its leader, or could explain what "juche" is?

Do they have nuclear weapons? Yes. Do they have missiles? Yes!

Are those missiles reliable and effective enough to be used as a delivery vehicle for their nuclear weapons? No. Have they obtained the capability to mount their weapons on one of those missiles? No.

Are their guidance systems on the missiles of high quality and accurate?

Is the fact that they possess missiles and nukes a concern? It is, and is a situation worth monitoring.

They are a huge threat to South Korea, (and by proxy to the US because we have troops in South Korea) but only because their conventional forces are so numerous and the only delivery system needed to nuke Seoul is a big truck that will carry a nuclear device. With or without the nukes, this large conventional force has been a concern on the peninsula for decades.

Kevin in Ohio   July 2nd, 2009 10:33 am ET

Too bad our President doesn't have a clue.

dave gunderson   July 2nd, 2009 10:31 am ET

N. Korea tries to hold the world ransom with petty threats and have gotten their way in the past. These days the international community says no more. With time, N. Korea with take this to the next level, away from petty threats towards serious action. I feel that the world should do the world a favor and dispose of this "crazy" and his regime.
Hmm... one question to leave on your mind; How can we ever do anything with our "great friend China" holding so much of our debt?

D-Nice   July 2nd, 2009 10:30 am ET

CNN, a news organization that is supposed to inform the populace, seems to love publishing polls that show how ignorant the average American is.

North Korea would be lucky if they managed to hit Japan, let alone Hawaii. CNN should really try harder to educate people about the world around them, rather than stir up political turmoil by perpetuating myths.

North Korea is a troubled country with sociopathic leaders, but they are still a long way from being a serious threat.

I'm actually surprised that the people picked NK over Iran given the three weeks of "OMG Ayatollah is teh evil!" coverage.

Enough   July 2nd, 2009 10:29 am ET

They are a HUGE threat. They know Obama is a weak leader and are toying around with us to see what he will do, besides give a "harsh" speech.

Fair is Fair   July 2nd, 2009 10:29 am ET

An apology?
A "reset button"??
A statement saying "we're concerned"???

What to do... what to do...

Randolph Carter   July 2nd, 2009 10:27 am ET

North Korea is so backward they probably have a couple of missiles which may or may not work, they've got a couple of nukes, but supposedly are years away from being able to put a nuke on a missile. I'd say the main threat from North Korea is a chemical attack and invasion of South Korea. In which case you know we'd just have to get involved. North Korea is just rattling their cage in order to get attention and more foreign aid. They're basically a loser country that can not even feed their people without foreign aid. It would be great to just ignore them and starve them out. But then they'd do something really crazy and desperate. That wouldn't be good. Hopefully dear leader will kick the bucket soon and a more reasonable little warlord will take his place. Probably not, though. Have a nice day!

Obama Victim   July 2nd, 2009 10:26 am ET

and how many days have those girls been held in North Korea now?? nice going Obozo

phoenix86   July 2nd, 2009 10:26 am ET

Come on, Obama just needs to talk to them.
