From

WASHINGTON (CNN) – Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin announced Friday she would not seek a second term and would soon step down as governor.

A Republican source close to her political team told CNN that it was a “calculation” she made that “it was time to move on.” The governor’s “book deal and other issues” was “causing a lot of friction up” in her home state, the source said, adding that he believes that she is “mapping out a path to 2012.”

The repubilicans must have done something wrong. Everytime U turn around, at least 1 repubilican is doing something way out of line. Limbaugh throwing people out of his GOP, Arlen Specter quits the GOP, a few GOP men not faithful to their wives and the media goes wild, The Huckster attacking the GOP listening tour, Norm Coleman finally concedes the Minnesota Senate race, and now to top the charts Palin quits being governor? WoW! Whoever gets the job as GOP PR spokesperson needs a huge raise and a truck load of asprin Listen up GOP get some character and integrity, 2010 is coming and could be very painful if u don't change

Too bad they have a cure for venereal disease and Aids – so many of you writers would be put out of commision permanently.

I feel sorry for Palin...You guys are going to be sorry with these Democrats, but I know slime like you will turn from them too.

This country is getting scary – I am very much for helping the minority community get into the business community and the real world, but it is the "educated" community that I could see pulling another Mussolini or Ceucescu. The majority wants the new Mengele and Stalin technologies along with its sexual promiscuity and his/her ability to put the knife to anyone but him or her self. How nice! I am really frightened next election, because anything humane about the Republicans along with anything humane about the Democrats is going right out the door. A second Hitler anyone?

wow so many self righteous bigots, stigmatizing and denigrating a certain perceived group of "ignorant" Americans.
You are so tolerant of opposing views. You do not fear those who disagree, so open minded
Many of the commenters here are hate filled close minded and unhappy
Continue to deceive yourselves that you are caring, tolerant and open minded. You are unhappy hate filled bigots.
hatred spewing from your hearts and mouths, no openess, no dialogue, just pure hatred.
This hatred will come back to haunt you. If its not Sarah Palin you will find someone else.

The character assassinations of Sarah Palin continue. CNN, ABC and MSNBC all have very low ratings on TV, so the question needs to be asked as to where these people come from. Anyone who does not see things from a liberal point of view are marked for the most vicious attacks imaginable. The attacks are not limited to Sarah Palin alone, but also to her family. If being liberal means spewing vicious, unfounded character assassinations against anyone who views the world from a conservative point of view rather than debate the issues rationally then I am happy not to be liberal. The attacks are getting more and more despicable, but liberals are seeing themselves as more and more progressive.

Is this a case of a Rat leaving a sinking ship, a dilettante following an erratic career path or quitting before delivering the pipeline she said she delivered (it's Trans-Canada Pipelines call) or a mom deciding a little late that her special needs child should might need some extra attention, or or other children might need he .... in any event, she will make the Democrats happy if she is the Republican Nominee for President in 2012. The democrats will be very supportive of her candidacy.

KingDavid   July 3rd, 2009 8:10 pm ET

Governor Palin made the smartest Political move for the Republican Party Ticket now and 2012 Presidential Election and to sell a book for $7 million, if she has to run against Obama, who I voted for, or against Hillary Clinton who I did not vote for, but Hillary Clinton has the one job now that qualifies a woman to be president of the United States and if the Republican Party was not so prejudice they would have talked Condalisa Rice into running in the Primary Election against Obama and Hillary because Rice's job put her in the category of women like Margaret Thatcher in the Argentina war and Golden Mier in the Olympic Terrorists attack! WAKE UP REPUBLICAN'S I DON'T LIKE THE SOCIALIST Democrats that followed President Bush's example of "Welfare for Corporate Fat Cats that ship American jobs overseas along with the Manufacturing equipment and our national Resources for CHEAP LABOR! If any Country other than the U.S.A. is importing more than they are exporting plus exporting American jobs, please let me know so I can visit them in the Mental Ward because if a Country's tax base relies on income taxes and you don't let the American workers earn income we are going to go broke with paper money not worth the paper it is printed on and HYPER Inflation to replace a Recession!

Her sense of entitlement is what's scary. Stupid people with a sense of entitlement don't leave marks on history, they leave scars. Alaska is better off, now let's pray the Republican lemmings won't be as easily mislead as in the past.

I have to wonder why she is 'moving on' in the middle of her term as governor. Is there something bad blowing in the wind or did a high ranking RNC official talk her into it 'for the good of the party"? Should be interesting to find out – and we will if there is anything really going on.

What does "the book deal and other issues was causing a lot of friction up in her home state"??? That's just strange. Why cant she write a book, or continue to be governor? Something's odd.

Seriously, with 52% of Americans not knowing who the leader of the GOP is, the far-right is in deep trouble!

Samuel B.   July 3rd, 2009 7:27 pm ET

@Anita:

Yes, Palin spoke like a true conservative. About every dumb and bizarre thing she said was reminiscent of something a brain-dead conservative would say. Now how about you take your stupid remarks and get lost along with Palin?

Sara Palin might think she is a lame duck! More likely, she is a "cooked goose"!!

Samuel B.   July 3rd, 2009 7:24 pm ET

I'm going to wait and see how far Palin is "moving on" before I start cheering. About a week of her not being in the news for some sort of bizarre comment or behavior ought to be a good indicator.

Come to think of it, maybe she's taking over Michael Jackson's concert tour. After all, they're two peas in a pod as far as strange behavior is concerned.

Palin is an irresponsible quitter. She should be ashamed of herself, the GOP should reconsider who calls themselves an elected republican. If the GOP is okay with this bizarre behavior by an elected republican, the party is lost. All we have to do is look at the national news to see the freaks who are elected under the banner of the GOP.

Larry from RI   July 3rd, 2009 6:48 pm ET

A dolt and a coward to boot – go figure, who saw this coming?

I hope the GOP gives her the nod to run for anything again in her political life because that will immediately guarantee the job to her opponent!

Keith Johnson (Fremont, CA)   July 3rd, 2009 6:36 pm ET

I wish her the best of luck with her life outside of politics. I doubt she plans on running for something again in the future, considering that she just took her political career back behind the woodshed and shot it.

I mean, if someone quit their job as a the governor of a state, I'm sure as heck never going to vote for them to be President of the United States. I doubt Alaska will replace their existing Republican senator with someone who quit being Governor, and it will be over five years until their Democrat senator is up for election (2014).

How dare you leave your responsibilities when your state is going through an economic crisis?

you may take pride in being called a maverick, but it shows no character to leave your office just because you cannot get anything done.

Now why would ANYONE want you to be president after you've flaked out of your job?

Former Republican Female   July 3rd, 2009 5:47 pm ET

Sarah Palin, please do us all a favor and go someplace, sit down and be quiet.

You are such a phony but John King and CNN love you.

guess this level of "executive experience" was too much. i'm relieved. now she's not going to be running for president. one who cannot finish a term as governor for a state smaller than seattle, houston, etc. surely shouldn't be promoted to such an important position. looks like adulterer newt and mormon romney are the last men standing. too bad romney's own party has hang-ups with his religious choice.

Happy Fourth of July America! The AIP crowd is going home.

Darth Vadik, CA   July 3rd, 2009 5:26 pm ET

drummajor66,

you're kidding right, Obama running for whitehouse, winning, and transitioning from Senate into Presidency is the same thing as quiting in a middle of your term for.....?

It is this 75 IQ Republican mentality why the country is in the state it is, ass far as Alaska being in a good state, it is very easy to be in a good state when for every dollar you pay to the federal government you get 2.25 dollars back. Try being California and only getting 75 cents back. I guess that is why Californian freeways are crumbling and Alaskans are building a bridge to nowhere.

Moonbeam   July 3rd, 2009 5:21 pm ET

Yeah, abandoning your post because it is no fun anymore will make you look really good as the Presidential candidate, Mrs. Palin!

Excuse me?   July 3rd, 2009 5:19 pm ET

Anita   July 3rd, 2009 5:17 pm ET

Palin spoke out like a true conservative. She was candid and pointed out what she had done for Alaska in in 2 years with great accomplishments in a true partisan working relationship, which Obama failed to do. She even vowed to work behind the desk with whoever becomes the governor to advance what is best for Alaska. You democrats left wing radical should start listening to what Palin is saying again without the teleprompter and notes at best! Palin is the true and honest politician so far!

Michael, Pensacola, FL   July 3rd, 2009 5:17 pm ET

The only thing she's mapping out is a radio show in a time block before Fred Thompson, lol.

T   July 3rd, 2009 5:12 pm ET

She is absolutely correct about it being time to move on........time to move on from being "waterboarded" with Micheal jackson gossip and trivia by all of the so-called news networks. I was on Micheal jackson overload since last Friday and being kept in the dark concerning world affairs and politics. The events in Iran and north korea did not just suddenly dissapear, the conomic situation didn't just miraculously fix itself, health care and the energy bill didn't fix themselves either, they were pushed aside and ignored by the so-called news networks .

As far as sarah palin goes, I think she lives in a bizzaro-world all of her own making. But I have to thank her for being the breaking point at wich "actual news" was once again brought to the forefront.

timz   July 3rd, 2009 5:11 pm ET

I bet Alaskans are wishing they'd elected Tina Fey instead.

Anita   July 3rd, 2009 5:08 pm ET

CNN, you need to put up the entire video of Palin's speech to fully grasp what comes from her heart without the teleprompter, (unlike Obama) , much less no notes to peak into while she delivered her astounding rehash of what she had for Alaska. She did speak from her heart and this what the democrats are so scared about.....this is why they want to destroy her. Come one CNN, be fair and balanced! Do not be like MSNBC!

James   July 3rd, 2009 5:04 pm ET

Just as all the GOP presidential hopefuls were dropping like flies and I thought Palin was regrettably the only hopeful who was still standing, she comes and quits because responsibility is just too much for her.

Scott in Colorado   July 3rd, 2009 5:03 pm ET

USA Patriot   July 3rd, 2009 5:00 pm ET

Wow. She actually thinks she has a chance. FAT CHANCE!!!!! If you can't take the heat to keep a job you already have – what makes you have the guts to expect people to believe you are qualified to do something else that's crucial to the people?

BILL, WI   July 3rd, 2009 4:59 pm ET

This is probably more due to the fact that she has over $500,000 dollars in debt defending herself from the petty ethics complaints filed against her by the Democrats. If the tactic is NOT impeachement which would be determined in court, but by endless vindictive complaints which would be handled in committee set up by the Democrat state legislature. Complaints by the way that she had to pay out of her own pocket the legal fees to retain a lawyer to defend herself against those bogus charges. Sadly none of the complaints were ever found to have any real merit, and for that the Democrats and the DNC should be proud.

Julio   July 3rd, 2009 4:58 pm ET

Revelation

I am here to reveal that Governor Palin is being investigated for something out of ordinary. She was caught doing something that when revealed, will be a deception for most of her supporters. If she keeps her job the scandal will affect the Republican more deeper. Since, she will be forced out of office.

So, for the sake of the party she is stepping down. But the investigation will go forward. In three months the media will have a huge story to sell.

Can't you read her face during the announcement?
Can't you see the deception on her speech?
Why you think she doesn't attack President Obama or the Democrats during the announcement?

She is done folks.

Wait and see.

Observant   July 3rd, 2009 4:57 pm ET

Bill in Illinois...Palin running does not guarantee a win for Obama in 2012. Obama is screwing up his re-election without her help with all the government spending and unemployment growing, not to mention that no-one in the middle calss is benefiting from his policies. Like you I voted for Obama...wish I could get that vote back. That being said, never in a million years would I vote of Sarah Palin. I am hoping that someone strong emerges in 2012 that actually want to help America and Americans.

Palin quit her job – is that what we teach our children when you have had enough to quit? Something else is brewing. Her name must be linked to something else and we just haven't heard about it yet. It is a lame excuse if she quit so she could run for President. Bet that looks good on her resume. Maybe she will go out into the wilderness and try to be friends with the moose and bears instead of killing them. At least there we don't have to hear about her at all.

Governor Palin is quitting a year and a half early.

Her timing is related to the Sanford fiasco. She is striking while the iron is hot. She sees an opening now that he has messed up so badly. Problem is, she doesn't realize how badly she has messed up over and over again. Any legitimate feedback is immediately label "left wing media" by her – Sarah, listen to some of the feedback! You would think that such an important announcement would have been polished and well thought out. It was her usual rambling, incomprehensible, "what the heck is she saying" nonsense. I for one hope that she runs. That would guarantee a win for Obama in the next election were she to become the republicrats nominee. I seriously doubt that many folks would vote for her given the fact that she quit the governors job and being President is certainly much more demanding than being the governor of Alaska. This circus kind of reminds one of the Minnesota / Jessie Ventura fiasco or the more recent Al Franken horror story. Is it something about the places where it gets really cold?

She's too busy writing her book to run her state...huh? C'mon...she's not *that* flighty, is she? How embarrassing for her state, and her fans.

Oh, Sarah! You don't have the guts to serve out your term as the legislation becomes more difficult. When the going gets tough, Sarah heads out the back door.

Sam Rose   July 3rd, 2009 4:17 pm ET

Why isn't she serving out her term?

Isn't that what the people of Alaska elected her to do?

Unless she is ill–I can't think of any other acceptable reason why she wouldn't serve out her term?
Well then in my opinion
-this shows a lack of integrity.

jimmy-ohio   July 3rd, 2009 4:17 pm ET

sure,,,,,,,and the real reason will come out next week

I can not believe the reporters on CNN today think and report that Palin is stepping out of "government" because she believes she can do more elsewhere. The only "government" she is stepping out of is the state of Alaska. I believe she feels she can be more effective(aka: powerful) on the national level. Is she qualified? I have not seen it . I will wait to hear the rest of the story....

This will not look good on her political resume.

Party time in Alaska Tomorrow, A true "Independance Day", from the ruling Hillbillies.

Somebody please shut this windbag up.

louise   July 3rd, 2009 4:16 pm ET

I would be willing to bet a dollar to a donut that Ms Palin has a big job lined up with Faux News. It's amazing how many illerate people they hire to rile up the right-wing idiots in this country. Anyone have the same feeling. In the end, it is all about money.

Donna, Orlando FL   July 3rd, 2009 4:14 pm ET

Sorry 2 see her quit. But I trust her for the best interest. I hope she does run in 2012. Hope she does finds what she's looking for along down the line for the future of her, family & running for President.

I wish her all the luck from now & into the future. Alaska will never be the same w/o Sarah Palin.

SARAH PALIN 2012

john   July 3rd, 2009 4:14 pm ET

Bye never come back

Eric   July 3rd, 2009 4:14 pm ET

She QUIT!!! Bottom-line is she quit her job. Now is this what we want for a national leader? There goes another REPUBLICAN! She said absolutely nothing to excuse this action. She's chasing the money, don't talk ethics Governor you need some.

Polar Bears Against Palin   July 3rd, 2009 4:14 pm ET

What an unstable broad. Get lost, Caribou Barbie.

CNN, bring back the Michael Jackson stories. Please!

mary   July 3rd, 2009 4:14 pm ET

I just hope this means she's going for 2012, it will be a great 2 years of Tina Fey and watching this nut doing interviews.

CMG   July 3rd, 2009 4:13 pm ET

Hopefully, she is not only "moving on" but in addition, "out of the country."

cassa   July 3rd, 2009 4:13 pm ET

Standing for election implies a promise that you honor, value, and will do the job. I hope folks will remember this egregious abdication of responsibility should she indeed put herself up in 12.

ol cranky   July 3rd, 2009 4:10 pm ET

From a political perspective, I can't imagine it will look good in a future run for POTUS if she couldn't complete an entire term as Governor.
