Palin to step down as governor, not seeking re-election

WASHINGTON (CNN) – Gov. Sarah Palin announced Friday that she will step down as Alaska's chief executive by the end of the month. She will not seek election to a second gubernatorial term in 2010.

Palin, a Republican, was elected governor in 2006. She was tapped as Arizona Sen. John McCain's vice presidential running mate last year.

Palin said she was transferring authority to Lt. Gov. Sean Parnell, who will be sworn in on July 26.

"People who know me know that besides faith and family, nothing's more important to me than our beloved Alaska," Palin said at an announcement from her home in Wasilla.

"Serving her people is the greatest honor I could imagine."

Palin added in a statement that she was "determined to take the right path for Alaska even though it is not the easiest path. ... Once I decided not to run for re-election, I also felt that to embrace the conventional 'Lame Duck' status in this particular climate would just be another dose of 'politics as usual,' something I campaigned against and will always oppose."

A Republican source close to Palin's political team told CNN's John King that it was a "calculation" she made that "it was time to move on."

The governor's "book deal and other issues" were "causing a lot of friction up" in her home state, the source said, adding that he believes that she is "mapping out a path to 2012."

Another source, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said that Palin "thinks she has accomplished goals she has set forward. ... She sees what a positive influence she has had on people's lives from traveling the country in the last year."

As the 2008 GOP vice presidential nominee, Palin has been considered one of the front-runners for the next GOP presidential nomination. Her decision not to seek another term as governor is sure to stoke speculation that Palin is seriously eyeing a run for the White House.

In an interview last month with CNN's Wolf Blitzer, Palin said she was unsure about her re-election bid because she needed to focus on her state and her family.

"So, no decision yet on either 2010 or let alone 2012?" Blitzer asked.

"No decision that I'd want to announce today," Palin responded.

– CNN's Peter Hamby, John King, Mark Preston, and Alan Silverleib contributed to this report.

Sarah Palin should run for President, and I dont know what prayers you are talking about but most of the people I know pray that Obama will go away..... Alaska may be one of the least populated but it has the 2 LARGEST producing oil fields in the USA, and holds a total of about 30% of the US oil reserve so it has more going on then most states. Anyone who can run Alaska would make a good President.

Her speech today sounded like one of Hugh Heff's girl's leaving the playboy Mansion needing a job. Worse speech I've ever heard, but then again have a look at the party she's affiliated too! This is the worst case of Poltics as usual I've ever witness. Describing this using the a game of basketball, you must be kidding me! Lets see news networks have the public eye over Michael Jackson's death and funeral, good timing Sarah..ha Again Politics as usual cannot be tolarated!

It seems like political suicide to refuse to finish the first term. I mean, how are her constituents going to react in 2012? It seems like she's telling everyone that she can't hack it or that she's a blatant power-grabber. Turn your back on Alaska for the chance of getting into the White House? She's poisoning the 2012 waters.

Me think she was probably caught having sex with one of her aids far away into the forest on a cold lonely night. YOu could hear the call of the wolf not far away. Their snow mobil had run out of gas and they found an empty cabin. A fire was lite, the place got warmer and SArah just had to have it.. In fact she just said to her aid, "Gotta tell you I really need to have you. It has been a long time and I cant hold it any longer. Just take me into your arms and forget that I am your governor"

The young aid was to shock to reply yet happy to oblige and he just uttered an energetic "YOu betcha!"

Yes Sarah was caught and soon we will hear THE REST OF THE STORY

    StevenRex:
I agree with your point – to an extent. True, Obama did not have the most experience in national politics before the election. His lack of national political experience was, and should have been, criticized and his record scrutinized. During the campaign, however, he proved himself to be intellectually gifted and incredibly disciplined. Palin failed to exhibit those same qualities.

It is hard to believe that she is giving up such a position – maybe it would give her more time to prepare running for President next election. Good idea is for her to get together with octomom – they both love being on the news – what a team that would make.

    @ toyin

why would you want to give Alaska back? if you knew anything about Alaska you would know its worth in natural resources is greater than the other 49 states COMBINED. yeah, in a time where we are dependent on foreign oil and our country is only growing a massive trade deficit, yes, lets give Alaska back to the Russians.

Or, those of us with an IQ higher than room temperature can be thankful that we have a place like Alaska still to pillage for all its worth.

    Thank God!!

Maybe she's gotten the message that she's hardly close to being an admired icon as today's savvy successful woman.

She'll be a lot more comfortable going into the woods tonight and bagging a moose.

Let's see . . . she exposed and got rid of corrupt Alaskan politicians; democrat and republican, kept state taxes under control. Why do so many hate her? Oh yeah. She chose not to abort her baby even though she knew he had Downs syndrome. UNFORGIVABLE

all you Sarah haters need to get a life... she is far more intelligent than any of you and the majority of people in politics today. all you people who think you know what she is doing or why are just fools... of course you all are the same people who voted for Obama thinking he was all about hope and change...... he is just your everyday politician saying one thing and doing another which what he is doing is ridiculous.

why step down in less than a month? what's the hurry?

she's abandoned her job, which I guess was too much for her to handle.

    wow.

I strongly doubt that she will be running for prez. Everyone knows that it's best to stay in the spotlight until a run is announced. She will be completely forgotten by 2010. Yay!!!

  24. Republican at Heart, but I will vote Democratic

Oh my God. This is not the person to beat Barack Obama. She will not even win the Republican nomination. You don't beat Obama by criticizing his policies; you win by being dynamic, smart and supportive of the President. You definitely want to appear supportive. Then, you focus on in on his errors and capitalize on them. Romney will trounce Palin.

I support Republican policies but they are clueless.....

Wow...lol...a 10 minute speech in which she rambled and complained about the federal govt. and then in the face of that and other tensions she will simply quit. Republicans are just making this too easy.
