Queen Noor: We are approaching a nuclear tipping point

WASHINGTON (CNN) – On the eve of one-on-one talks between President Obama and Russian President Dmitry Medvedev at the Kremlin, one of the founders of Global Zero, an initiative aimed at ridding the planet of nuclear weapons, said the time was now to do away with the weapons.

“We have two paths,” Queen Noor of Jordan said Sunday in an interview with CNN’s “State of the Union.” “One is to continue along the path of nuclear proliferation to a nuclear proliferation tipping point at which we may not be able to pull back. Or, to move towards a path towards ‘Global Zero.’”

Noor, head of the King Hussein Foundation, also said that nuclear materials –even if not already made into nuclear weapons - present a threat.

“The danger of those materials ending up in the hands of terrorists or misused by governments is increasing by the day.”

I agree with Negoitiating and dealing diplomatically with Russia, but I hope we stay prepared for any worst case senarios, we must disarm some nukes, but not fully eliminate our stockpiles when a hostile partner decides to build more. Converting them to nuclear power plants isnt such a bad Idea

Obama inadvertently gave Iran the green light to develop an atom bomb. I say this because it appears to be the logical conclusion to be drawn from his announcement in May. He is giving Iran until the end of the year to decide whether or not to co-operate with the West over its controversial nuclear program. Obama remarked: We should have a fairly good sense by the end of the year as to whether the Iranians are moving in the right direction. Obama will pay a political price if Iran goes nuclear on his watch.

It was a wonderful piece and I hope that the leading powers in the world can show leadership by accepting no favoritism concerning certain countries and realizing that a phased standard must be met globally in order to accomplish a nuclear free world.

However I couldn't help but notice John King's phrasing of his inrerpretation of Obama's stance re: Palestinians and Israelis..he said "Israel thought they had a friend in Obama, but now they are beginning to question whether that is the case–because Obama asks them to freeze settlement growth." Quickly HRH Queen Noor reiterated that Obama is a friend of Israel.! Why do republicans and certain Jews/Israelis think that Obama isn't being their friend because he asks them to adhere to written conditions set forth in earlier peace accords...namely that they would stop all settlement growth. It's another false choice offered by some who want to drive a wedge between some Jews and Obama.
Israel must realize that they should stop building settlements as a part in a process that will encourage Palestinians to make concessions–in order to reignite the peace process.

Anyone ever noticed that the problems we are experiencing with Iran, Iraq, Syria, and North Korea didn't exist before the reign of King George II? Before George Bush, and the foolhearty "Axis of Evil" catastrophic statement....Iran wasn't really bugging us. Neither was North Korea. He created a problem where there wasn't one...now, we have a lasting problem that we will have to deal with, that we will have to contend with. Why couldn't he leave things well enough alone? Why couldn't he let sleeping dogs lay? Why did he allow the biggest Terrorist attack in the Nation's history to occur?

Because North Korea refuses to understand and comit to a non-weapon nuclear program, they cause problems in the world. The ruling elite in Iran could clear up the whole mess if they follow South Africa's example of showing everything; even that took several years. If I ran is to be believed, then they must show everything. If they can't, then it can only be assumed that they are building a bomb; if they give it to Hamas or Hezbollah, that won't be a big surprise or who they plan on using it on. Israelis will be the one to pay the biggest price.

Can someone help me understand why our destroying our own nuclear defenses will prevent other nations and terrorist organizations from obtaining or producing their own weapons grade nuclear material?

I don't think the rest of the world has to worry about the U.S, France, Israel. or Russia. Queen Noor and the No Nukes crowd should be pressuring Iran, N. Korea and their ilk to 'cool it'. Believe me, the bad guys don't care if we have zero or 10,000 nukes.
