Stimulus money needs to be spent faster, Dems say

House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer said Sunday that the president's $787 billion dollar stimulus plan was taking too long to create jobs in the struggling economy.
House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer said Sunday that the president's $787 billion dollar stimulus plan was taking too long to create jobs in the struggling economy.

(CNN) - A leading congressional Democrat and Republican both expressed disappointment Sunday with the pace of the government's economic stimulus program, but offered differing views on whether it was a good idea.

House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer said allocating the $787 billion in the stimulus package pushed by President Barack Obama to create jobs was taking too long.

"We're disappointed," Hoyer, D-Maryland, told "FOX News Sunday." "We're looking at ways to get the money out more quickly."

Hoyer's Republican counterpart, Rep. John Boehner, said on the same program that the stimulus bill passed by Congress in February was flawed.

"You can't spend $800 billion of taxpayer money and not create jobs, when you say that's what the bill was for," Boehner, of Ohio, complained. Boehner said the bill only funds more government, rather than creating private sector jobs.

Democrats, led by Vice President Joe Biden, contend the stimulus money will begin launching more construction projects and other job-creating programs now that necessary mechanisms have been established and contracts signed.

"This was set up to spend out over 18 months," Biden said in an interview with ABC's "This Week" program. "There are going to be major programs that are going to take effect in September - $7.5 billion for broadband, new money for high-speed rail, the implementation of ... the new electric grid. And so this is just starting."

Neither Biden nor Hoyer would comment on whether an additional economic stimulus package is necessary to help pull the U.S. economy out of recession. The latest unemployment figures issued last week showed a 9.5 percent jobless rate, the highest in more than two decades.

Boehner, however, warned against more government spending to heal the economic problems.

"I don't believe it will create jobs," he said, calling instead for reduced taxes to let small business and consumers spend their money as they choose.

Boehner called the scope and speed of Obama's domestic agenda - which so far includes the stimulus package, a health care overhaul now working its way through Congress and an energy bill to combat global warming passed by the House - "nothing short of breathtaking."

The end result, he said, would be "bigger government, higher taxes, less freedom for the American people."

    Shantell,

Despite how much contempt you may have for Bush, you cant distort the facts. Bush did not reason any one's taxes. In fact, every American paid lower income taxes thanks to the Bush tax cuts. Obama, on the other hand, is ready to take a bigger cut from you. Higher taxes on healthcare and energy are coming down the pike, and those increases will hurt low and middle income Americans the most.

That money went straight to the pockets of the Democrats who helped Obama get into office...just wave goodbye to it already. Apparently, Obama thinks money grows on trees....well it doesn't. Now we're not only dependent on foreign oil (the Middle East) we're dependent on China....and that puts our country at risk. Same old politics with the Democrats. They fight over money and power while the country goes to pot.

@Charlotte, NC as usual nice spin by a dimwitted liberal. You have no clue what your leader Obama has done to this nation. The energy bill will fail miserably because constituents are voicing their distrust in the American leadership right now because there are NO JOBS BEING CREATED. In fact, MORE JOBS are being lost, and TOP economists (those without their noses up Obama's butt) are warning of dire straits as we head into Q3/Q4.

I have my cash ready to load up on stocks when things crash. Cannot wait to see the flaming liberals crash and burn and then realize their leadership (Obama, Pelosi, Frank) are driving this country into the ground.

How can you spend something faster you do NOT have? China doesn't want to lend money to USA anymore. Russia, China and India is now working together to change currency from US dollar to yuan.

Obama and the DEMOCRAPS are DESTROYING this country! China now OWNS United States of America. Obama Administration and DEMOCRAPS in Congress and Senate is now playing with MONOPOLY MONEY. NO VALUE!

Hey Repubs, no matter what you say, OBAMA WILL win a second term and there is nothing you can do about it. After what BUSH did, Obama can do no wrong in my eyes.

John Boehner cares only about John Boehner ...

He does not care about Americans or the suffering so many face

He's doing everything he can to obstruct any policy the Democrats suggest in their efforts to help this country out of the mess the Republicans made

John Boehner deserve no less than jail

The Party Of NO ... conscience

So, when the country is in great trouble, both economically at home and involved in two wars abroad, we elect a guy with no experience–because he's a novelty and a great orator. And now we're surprised at what he's doing?
Wake up, folks. The American public is, collectively, an ignorant, stupid, idiot.

This is the MANTRA of DEMOCRAPS:

    If it moves = TAX
It it keeps on moving = TAX IT MORE

KEEP ON TAXING IT UNTIL IT DIES, then TURN AROUND AND TELL THE AMERICAN PEOPLE THEIR TAXES MUST INCREASE, NEW CAP AND TRADE TO RAISE MORE MONEY TO SPEND.

Who is getting this "stimulus" generated from the back of EVERY taxpayers? Buddies of Obama and DEMOCRAPS who donated millions of dollars to their campaign to keep them in power so they CAN STEAL MORE from regular Joe eking out a living who can barely meet his montly bills with inflation rising, unemployment rising.

WELCOME TO OBAMISM, HOPE AND CHANGE!

Shovel ready! When will the sheep realize that Obama lies to them every day. I don't know about your city, but I don't see construction jobs in our paper. Spending requires more taxing. How do you pay more in taxes if you don't have a job?

CNN – are they disappointed with the PLAN, or are they diappointed with the PACE? You used to be a source of impartial and hard-hitting news – but now you seem to be on par with all the publicly-traded news companies – headlines first, facts later – all about the $$$$$. I will be very surprised if you even post this.

The Obama administration owns the economy now. No more blaming Bush. The Republicans can't stop anything...the Democrats are calling the shots. And they are too busy lining their own pockets to worry about fixing the problems. Nancy Pelosi wouldn't know how to work in a partisan way if her life depended on it. This country is starting to look an awful lot like it did during the Jimmy Carter years and when inflation hits and unemployment climbs (when they stop playing with the numbers and show what it REALLY is) the American people will do the same thing they did in 1980 and put a Republican back in office. Hopefully, we won't have Iran and North Korea armed and ready to deal with. This is a mess you liberals are creating...not the Republicans. You can't focus on these big of issues when there's 16,000 changes going on at the same time. It's ridiculous. All for power and politics.

Obama's vision and execution of his agenda is failing before our very eyes.

Why??? Bad Ideas + Impossible Time Constraints + Government Oversight = 100% Failure.

The sooner we take our medicine the better. What I mean for you dummys out there is that the sooner the dimwits in congress and the senate realize they are dealing with a pure idealogical novice- the sooner we can get this country back on track.

And by the way- SPENDING IS NOT THE ANSWER!

You want jobs- cut capital gains by 100% for the next 5 years. Guess who has this now-- CHINA.

We are idiots to support this plan... and this man.

Shantell- You voted for Bush twice, but then state as fact the fictional Democrat talking points about the Bush tax cuts, and the constant whining from Obama defenders that the mean Republicans just say no whenever the Messiah keeps spending taxpayer money. Taxes DECREASED for the middle/lower income families under Bush. So please just go back to ACORN and tell them you tried to keep spreading the lies about Bush, while trying to keep the Obama intellectual fallacy alive.

Now that Haliburton is being forced to shut down their little lemonade stand in Iraq, maybe the US government ought to audit them and find out how many hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars they skimmed on Cheney's watch... and get it back... that could fund the stimulus right there...

The largest debt being racked up in U.S. history, coupled with the highest unemployment rate in 25 years. Trillions later and still no health care...good strategy.

Unemployment at 10%. If you use the same equations they did for Bush, unemployment would be 16.5%. Loss of jobs in June: 475,000.
Yeah, the stimulus bill is genius, pure genius.

If the media had not cozied up to the "Slogan of Change" and with all the stolen phrases from here and there, then we would have a fiscally competent Hillary who would have done a better job with the economy. The other Clinton did it.

Why does not media ask Obama what "CHANGE" he has brought to Washington.? Looks like It is more of the same in a different colored wrapper.

The campaign of deception and deceipt still goes on like planting a question ahead of time with a liberal Huffington Post reporter.

When all the glitters of Michelle's fashion shows dimms, when the cute dog is not cute anymore, when the oratory skaills fall on deaf ears, when "CAHNGE" is for "WORSE", would the media be be asking tough questions?

Big suprise! politics is for controling the oil and resourses of the world and allowing the Fed to counterfeit money! Why can't we bring the real enemy before the American people and try the for treason? They have no congressional authority nor does congress have the authority to spend taxpayer money on private business! look at all the problems and find how many were caused by the taxpayer!? politicians are the real enemy of the people and must be held responsible!

I see that there are still about 20% of you still blaming Bush. Dems have been in charge of Congress for 2 1/2 years. Obama has spent more in six months than the history of ALL Presidents. Attn: Bush haters, your savior has lied to you.

Hey lemmy-you never saw a president lose so much money so fast? Such a short memory you right wingers have. "W' took a trillion dollar SURPLUS and gave it to all his buddies within the first weeks of his administration. And that was just the beginning. If you think misinformation and slight of hand will get the GOP elected anytime in the next 10-20 yrs, you might want to rethink that. I agree with Bean Counter. It's time for all the left and right children to go sit in their corners. Let the adults talk...

The best way to "spend" the money is to give it back to the taxpayers in the form of tax reductions! Otherwise they are literally throwing away trillions of dollars.

How quick we forget – President Obama did give us taxpayers a tax break and Bush tax break for the rich is still in effect. Stop jumping at every change to bring this President down.
