Michael Steele called the recent extramarital affairs of Mark Sanford and John Ensign 'old news, old school.'

WASHINGTON (CNN) - Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele dismissed recent extramarital affairs by two prominent members of his party as "old news, old school" at a GOP dinner in Indianapolis on Wednesday night.

Steele was referring to headline grabbing stories like admissions of infidelity by South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford and Nevada Sen. John Ensign, and suggested he has moved on.

"That's not the generation of candidates I'm trying to groom," Steele said, according to the Indianapolis Star.

Steele said the Republican Party should get back to its small-government roots and listed Republican governors like Haley Barbour of Mississippi, Tim Pawlenty of Minnesota, Bobby Jindal of Louisiana and Mitch Daniels of Indiana of Indiana as "laboratories for the ideas we believe in."

Steele also told a local radio station in Indiana on Wednesday that he wasn't surprised by Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin's sudden decision to resign her post and said she felt like she was "just a lightning rod for a lot of crazy noise right now." He said this shouldn't affect her potential political ambitions down the road, should she decide to run for president in 2012 - though he said "people overestimate her desire to be at the table."

"I think that's gonna be something for Sarah to decide, not for the pundits and political insiders who think they know more about Sarah Palin and her life than she does," Steele told WIBC.

"Laboratories”? .... He is right ...they are all rats locked in a cage...trying to think of "ideas" to continue the "rat" mentality of the repug party.

HJA   July 9th, 2009 3:00 pm ET

Yep. Old news, old school. Nothing new or suprising here.

silly rabbit   July 9th, 2009 2:59 pm ET

So does this mean the GOP will end it's platform of being the party of Famliy Values?

President Obama taking his wife and kids out, on trips with him and being with his girls as much as he can to me is Family Values, even though some of you right wingers moan about it.

A GOPer caught in a men's room with his hand under a stall
A VP candidate with her then unwed pregnant teenage daughter and her self proclaimed redneck father of the baby on stage with her
A senator with not only his mistress on the payroll but her son as well
A govenor that leaves the country on Father's Day to go visit his girlfriend

I guess THESE are the new GOP family values...... but like Steele says that's OLD news.

Felonious Monk   July 9th, 2009 2:57 pm ET

You can believe, and you can bet on, that if it was a member of the opposite party they would be running all the way to the goal line with this one. But, because it is a member of their party, we should forgive and forget.

Does anyone know if there is a time limit on forgiving and forgetting? How long after something happens are we supposed to wait before we forgive and forget? What is the longest amount of time we can wait before forgiving and forgetting.
If Republican, forgive and forget right away.
If Democrat, never forgive and forget.
I think that is how the right conservatives want it.
Preach, preach, preach, preach.

happy 101   July 9th, 2009 2:56 pm ET

You know, these are times I'm ashamed to be a Republican because the actions of these clowns, Sanford, Craig and let's not forget our old pal Peter King is driving the GOP at a downward spiral.

Michael Steel is more fun than the Jackson's saga....

Mike   July 9th, 2009 2:56 pm ET

Why not file ethics complaints on obama taking his family all overseas at the cost of many millions. After all they went after Governor Palin for a few thousand dollars for the same thing. I guess we should not complain, when obama is overseas he is not spending tax payer money except for his AND HIS FAMILIES travel costs.

NVa Native   July 9th, 2009 2:55 pm ET

The Republican Party has de-evolved into lost band of cave dwellers. With the likes of Tom Davis and John Warner leaving there is a big whole in the party. They weren't moderates – they were real people who represented real people's best interests. They stood for a huge group of Republican voters who respected civil liberties and the right to have independent thought. The Buch/Cheney years of Tom Delay and other political bullies waving the self-righteous flag of false patriotism and religious intolerance/arrogance has destroyed the Republican party to the point that all that is left are these empty suits – Palin, Steele, Boner, McConnel, Ensign, Stanford, etc. These clowns can get away with anything because there is no one of any real integrity to replace them. In simplist terms the Republicans are a very shallow gene pool with no inflow with the dry season approaching.

John   July 9th, 2009 2:44 pm ET

Despite the all the virulent and often unintelligible comments that have somehow made it past CNN's moderators (makes you wonder what they're up to, huh?), Mr. Steele is not dismissing these two incidents because he doesn't believe them to be unethical, but rather because his overall goal is to move the focus within the GOP away from the older party members and towards younger, "fresher" candidates.

One final note: CNN moderators, how on Earth can you allow a comment like that made by "Sarahmadinejad Palinannity" to make it through? At least make an effort to LOOK like you're not a thoroughly biased organization...

Party Crasher   July 9th, 2009 2:43 pm ET

Did he not just say a few days ago that a 2012 run for Palin was off the table or did he mean off the hook? I guess Rush called him and said that he had not made a decision on Palin yet, so Steele has to try and walk that dog backwards for now.

Dee, 1 Vote   July 9th, 2009 2:39 pm ET

Mr. Steele, As a leader, you must control your party. Are U a MAN or a mice!

Jim in San Mateo   July 9th, 2009 2:38 pm ET

Michael Steele grooming? He can barely manage his own affairs let alone anyone else's. Who is he kidding?

The party of family values has lost those values and doesn't have much to stand on except for vice and corruption which are hardly issues to campaign on. Otherwise the party of no has no new ideas and wants to dig it's head in the sand and hope that this nations problems will just go away of their own accord.

I can see Canada from my house!   July 9th, 2009 2:35 pm ET

No, Mike, you cannot overestimate Palin's desire to be at the table. There has never been a more unqualified candidate for national office. As for one of the many other problems the GOP has, namely their elected officials being unable to keep their marriage vows, an utter lack of original ideas and a total absence of a sense of reality, you, Mr. Steele, are contributing to it with every utterence.

Dennis   July 9th, 2009 2:29 pm ET

Of course he wants to move on, think about it. However, after years and years and years of a "holier than thou" attitude, name calling, looking down their nose, spouting "family values" (while at the same time enacting policy to hurt families)................guess what? We will not move on.....we are going to insist on the same morals and values that for years you tried to convince people you had a monopoly on. Well you don't and you will be judged by the same measure you wanted to judge everyone else. Live with it.

videodrome   July 9th, 2009 2:27 pm ET

Say, homeboy Steele, it is the HYPOCRISY of your party that is the problem.
"Do as I say, not as I do" – does that sound familiar, Mr. Bojangles?
IF the Republican party had stuck to it's roots (no pun intented here) of limited government and personal freedom, the party would still be viable. But as long as this party caters to the whims or religious zealots, then the party will be "old news, extinct school".
And religious nutcases, this U.S. country is NOT founded just to preach Jesus. Go preach Jesus on your own time and your own dime, zealots.

Dont blame me   July 9th, 2009 2:26 pm ET

Steele, it is time for you to stop acting like a democRAT and start thinking like a Conservative.

First off, STOP appoligizing for everyone else.
Second, get it in your head that the democRATs are very good at CHEATING and playing DIRTY politics.

As much as I hate to say it, it is time for the Republicans to drop down to the level of the democRATs and then beat them at their own game.

Anybody that is for partial birth abortions in my mind is a BARBARIAN.

Maybe now they can get off their high horses and realize they are just humans like everyone else. The reality of it is they just don't have morals. And God will always bring hypocrites down. That right wing so called conservative christian should be out here denouncing these guys just like they do everyone else. Still pray for them but denounce them. But because they seem to be hypocrites as well they won't do it. It is funny and sad at the same time seeing these Republicans trying to defend this mess.

You make grooming sound like cloning. You can't guarantee what will happen with human nature.

Craig H   July 9th, 2009 2:15 pm ET

Odd that Steele should discount these very recent extra-marital affairs of Republicans as old news when practically the only reason that anyone is still a Republican these days is because they are still outraged over Bill Clinton's indiscretions of 13 years ago. Heck, you can even still buy T-shirts on Republican leaning websites that refer to Clinton's affair, but these very recent affairs by Republicans are "old news" Steele says. Get real, bro.

guesswhats4dinner   July 9th, 2009 2:15 pm ET

Oh if only the Republicans can promise that Mr. Steele, Palin, Sanford, Ensign, Boeher, and Jindal will be their talking heads for the next several years. Please yes, please keep these guys on the front page and in the head lines, this will only guarantee that Democrats will get to roll out the agenda that we want rolled out. And its not bad on the humor aspect either

~~ July ~~   July 9th, 2009 2:11 pm ET

"That's not the generation of candidates I'm trying to groom," Steele said

Right ... because your generation of candidates that YOU are trying to groom are the ones that are NOT caught cheating and lying and stealing ..... those are the ones you want to be the future of the GOP.

nick   July 9th, 2009 2:11 pm ET

Mr Steele, were not these two "christan men" supported by the "christan rightwing" of your party? I don´t believe it was that long ago... So now they are old news and old school... You ,Mr. Steele are out of line and off base. I believe it was just a few weeks ago, that you referred to Gov. Sanford, as a "rising star" in your party. Now you throw him under the bus, and identify other "rising stars". When will this parade of losers end? How much of this "moral values" crap will we have to endure, before you see the writing on the wall? You Mr. Steele are also, "old news and old school"

Pete T   July 9th, 2009 2:10 pm ET

The GOP has touted moral superiority as a party platform for decades – EVEN TO THIS DAY. Yet, over and over again it is shown to be a party of lies and hypocrisy.

Doesn't take a population of rocket scientists to understand that the GOP is a complete sham.

Too True For You   July 9th, 2009 2:09 pm ET

GI Joe is absolutely right. They should have a sing in the GOP headquarters that says in bold type: "It's the Hypocrisy, Stupid!"

What a weak attempt to move past the latest in a long string of damaging ethical incidents for the republicans.

And Ed in Sante Fe is right: If this were a democrat, the torches would be out and the tea tantrum party go-ers would be on the march. But, if it's a sanctimonious "family values" transgressor, it's just old news (even if it's new) that should be moved past as quickly as possible. It must be terribly frustrating for them to see the First Family so perfectly living the family values the conservatives can only seem to talk about.

Roy Arellano (San Antonio)   July 9th, 2009 2:08 pm ET

Why? Because you say it is? Funny...I'm sure they dragged Clinton's failures for months if not years afterwards.

David   July 9th, 2009 2:08 pm ET

He forgot that the republican 'smaller government' concept only works for people with small minds. As societies grow and become more complex, so do the responsibilities of their governments.

Government must grow to keep up with societies growth.

What he really wants is a 'no bid contract' government based only on corporate profits, and no concern for the society it is supposed to serve.

After a Public Healthcare Option, we need a Public Option for Telephone/Internet, Cable/Satellite TV and Banking.

The Free Market is only free when the public actually have a choice.

Alex in Wisconsin   July 9th, 2009 2:06 pm ET

Michael Steele does it again. How can this be old news from the old school when the 'old school' is younger than the majority of Republicans? and how is it old news when it just happened less than a month ago? The fall out is stilll happening as we speak.

The Republicans, the party of family values, the party against cutting and running, have firmly aligned with people who cheat on their wives while denouncing others who are doing the same thing. AND they have firmly aligned with a woman who has quit because the ethics complaints were costing too much and the pressure got to be too much for her while telling the country that she isn't a quitter and that she is a fighter. Your classical cut and runner is now atop the GOP, all talk and bravado, substance or ideas

Michael Steele is working on the next generation of GOP. Howa bout working on the next generation by providing a plan for how to fix the country, not just the economy, not just making sure every citizen has a gun, but how about Health Care and education and bridges that don't collapse into the Mississippi River. But I understand, a puppet isn't supposed to think for itself. And a token aint worth anything on the outside.

Oh, I'm sure Michael Steele would LOVE for these stories to be old school, old news. They are more nails in the Republican coffin, and he's trying to pretend they don't exist. I actually feel sorry for the guy. He has to go out and be the face of the Republican party, which is filled with these ultra right wingers who do not believe in practicing what they preach. They want to tell the rest of us what we have to do and have no moral compass or responsibility themselves.

Steele was referring to admissions of infidelity by South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford and Nevada Sen. John Ensign, and suggested he has moved on.

Repubicans never want to be held responible for any bad habits they have shown, but rake any body us that have misstepped. All of them are the same ones that wanted Bill Clinton to resign, but it is just old news for one of their and we should just move on.

This is why the word Hypocrite is their new name. Sara Palin have yet taking any responsbity toward her failures. It is never her fault she was being attacked by the media and others. It was her performs and ranting nosence all the time. Sara Palin is like a car accident you just have to stop and see and that is it. She will never be the President of the USA.

Doug, New Jersey   July 9th, 2009 1:55 pm ET

Almost every Democrat in America believes that adultry is worse than murder and child molestation. Read their comments about Sanford and then check out how many times they re-elected Kennedy and Studds after the truth came out about them.

If you disagree that adulty is worse than murder and child molestation then I thank you in advance for your future republican votes. The only way to defeat evil and stand up for morals, values, integrity, and decency is to vote against Democrats. BTW, if you want see the undeniable truth of why the republican party is the party of morals, values, decency, and honesty, please visit a blue area and witness the evil that is the Democrat, just take out a life insurance policy before you come and interact with liberal Democrats.

Lisa B   July 9th, 2009 1:55 pm ET

Being from Minnesota, I feel obligated to tell Mr. Steele that Tim Pawlenty would need a very detailed map to find a "laboratory of ideas." He has offered no significant ideas of his own - he spends all of his time criticizing the ideas of others. That is why our state is experiencing a financial crisis as bad as the rest of the nation, when we used to weather economic storms relatively unscathed. That is why our property taxes have continued going up while in many other states, they have been trending down. And that is why he decided to tell our legislature to screw themselves, gave them the finger because they would not propose a budget that agreed with his tax philosophies (can you say compromise?), and is usurping his executive authority to use an emergency budgeting tool called "unallotment" to craft the budget cuts he wants while not having to be accountable to anyone (can you say checks and balances?) If this is the type of "generation of candidates" the Repubs are grooming, I would like to be the first to say "no thanks."

yuri   July 9th, 2009 1:54 pm ET

Now where did Steele suddenly spring from? He has been lyin' low, when all of a sudden, we hear a tweet or a chirp, tryin' to protect the Sanfords, Ensigns, Craigs, Gingrichs, and the like.

The ones he mentioned as labs. of ideas seem OK, but Tim Pawlenty appears as a smart selection, and others are assigned a place at the back Bunson burner of the lab.

"That's not the generation of candidates I'm trying to groom," Steele said,

So steele is the guy in charge of grooming future candidates?
Did Rush sign off on this?

Steele said the Republican Party should get back to its small-government roots

I keep hearing this, but not one Republican Administration in my life time ever did it.

He said this shouldn't affect her [Palin] potential political ambitions down the road, should she decide to run for president in 2012.

So the guy in charge of grooming future Republican canidates thinks that if they quit on the people who voted for them it won't affect their political ambitions? Really...he thinks people like and will vote for quitters?

Since when is hypocrisy an acceptable party platform?

Hugo   July 9th, 2009 1:38 pm ET

I don't think it will matter what the GOP can come up with after this debacle of inept government we are seeing under the Obama Administration. Sound economic principles speak for themselves, taxes and price increases in everyday necessities effect all of us, Democrats, Republicans, Liberals or Conservatives. You can't give a free government handout when no one of the working class has a job, you can't eat worthless paper in lieu of food!

When 2012 comes around if the economy isn't doing something better than what we are seeing, look out Donkey! Ross Perot for President!

@Dutch/Bad Newz, VA, I hate to be rude, but you seem to forget that they had to impeach Blago. And John Edwards resigned as a Senator in 2004, and the affair was in 2007. The only reason he quit the campaign was because the allegations that he used campaign money to cover up the affair.

Spitzer was the only man big enough to resign from office once the scandal broke.

I hate when people (Liberal or Neo Convervatives) twist the facts to sensationalize their statements. However, I do agree with Dutch, that Sanford needs to step down as Governor, he resignation as the Chairman of the Republican Governors Association is not enough. A lot of Republicans from his State are calling for him to step down, and he should. And John Ensign should do the same and resign from his Senate position.

The Center   July 9th, 2009 1:34 pm ET

Yes, Mr. Steele, it is old news. The GOP has been a party of hypocrites for years. Impeach Bill Clinton, protect Gov Sanford. No change, "old news".

gt   July 9th, 2009 1:34 pm ET

why are democrats so fearful of gender and race,,,most be race and gender bias ,,,, palin, gender ,,, steel and jindal race,,, same on you ....

marvinj   July 9th, 2009 1:32 pm ET

Did the party of no, just say that the party of morals are no longer in denial about there lack of morals.

Now lets here them admit that big business greed is keeping us in the ditch and this economic disaster remains on the backs of the last administration... Also tax breaks for corporations don't work again the greed factor is being left out of the equation.

Pawlenty? Jindal? Palin for Pres? This guy been huggin the crack pipe for faaaaaaaar too long…this party is pretty much dead. The only way they can come back is if the Democrats mess up…if that doesnt happen they wont be back anytime soon (Thank God)…

--------------------------------
You've got to be kidding me ! IF the Dems screw up ??? You have taken everything that the last administration did and MULTIPLIED it by a hundred times. Somehow that is supposed to fix everything. No fiscal discipline is what cost the Repubs the election and look at what we are doing now ! We are sealing our own fate.

A. Goodwin   July 9th, 2009 1:31 pm ET

So, when a Democrat has an extramarital affair and is caught...we are supposed to impeach them, shame them, out them publically so that they can never serve in American politics again (thinking about Clinton and Edwards). BUT...when its a member of the GOP we are supposed to forgive and forget.

I dont think so.

Shawn - GA   July 9th, 2009 1:30 pm ET

Please while youa re typing your hatred, do not forget about the actual President who was cheating in the White house and then said under oath that he never did it, only to later admitt he did.

I am not ripping on the man, I am jsut reminding you about it so maybe it will temper your hate filled comments on here. With hate the hater is the one who loses in the end not the hated.

God bless America, her people, and her President.

Greg, San Francisco, CA   July 9th, 2009 1:29 pm ET

Yeah totally Michael. GOP hypocrisy is sooooo like 5 minutes ago. Anyone who thinks otherwise is suffering from a "pre-9:11am-this-morning" mindset.

stevie raymie   July 9th, 2009 1:29 pm ET

oh....Melissa

Obama and his supporters will ALWAYS be blaming Bush for years to come for all the problems NObama can not and should not fix
(So what was that about taking responsibility?)

I would expect that from Obama he is a typical black guy who will blame the white guy
however, i am expecting better from you

stop blogging..............go get a job

hjs3   July 9th, 2009 1:29 pm ET

"Old news" to the GOP maybe now that the shoe is on the other foot.,
The unabashed hypocisy of these people is mind boggling.....

Once You Vote Black   July 9th, 2009 1:28 pm ET

The GOP has been beaten to a stand still. They have been whooped in the Senate and trounced in the House. The talent differential is mind boggling. Obama's victory was a landslide when you consider a Jr. Sen. destroyed a Sr. Sen. who is a war hero. And now we are taking over the Court. This is why the GOP is so happy to see that only 70% of the voters said said the president is a strong and decisive leader instead of 80%. You know you are a looser when your only argument for why you should be elected is because the other guys have everything. No matter how good or bad Obama does in office the right will never be able to erase the fact that a Blackman stomped the entire GOP by not only beating a nice clean war hero, but also ushered in a congress with a bulletproof majority! You guys go whooped.

Keeth in California   July 9th, 2009 1:28 pm ET

So we should forget Sanford and Ensign, but let's NEVER FORGET CLINTON. right....

Tommy   July 9th, 2009 1:28 pm ET

yeah, but its the same republican hypocrisy...

Aim high!

Once You Vote Black   July 9th, 2009 1:28 pm ET

Crapola! Is that Italian? I just wish Steele could get past one interview without using some sort of ghetto term like Old School. It was cute at first but I am starting to think that he really cannot talk without using some sort of boggie boggie term. And he is well educated. He must think we are not.

Larry   July 9th, 2009 1:27 pm ET

It won't be so "old news, old school" at election time.

When are you Republicans going to get the message.... You're dinosaurs. Your party is a thing of the past.

geo   July 9th, 2009 1:27 pm ET

Sanford, just resign ..period...

Open Your 3rd Eye   July 9th, 2009 1:27 pm ET

Steele-

Please, please shut UP!

You are a TOKEN – period

An embarrasment in comparison to Obama, and a joke of a politician.

Just beat it.

makesUwonder   July 9th, 2009 1:27 pm ET

The liberal Democrats only know how to ignore bad politicians, cheating politicians, corrupt politicians, and ones that lie if it's one of their own.

Chris in MI   July 9th, 2009 1:25 pm ET

Too bad Steele doesn't believe even a smidge of morals is important in politicians. These guys aren't just potential candidates, they are a SITTING governor and senator. Steele can even state that he's 'disappointed' in them. Yep, just depend on that old fart Barbour and 'dear in the headlights' Jindal. That'll bring back the old party. What a bunch of hypocrites!

Rob H   July 9th, 2009 1:23 pm ET

I do not assiciate with any particular party. I tend to be conservative on social issues which is why I have a huge problem with Mr. Steele's assessment of two prominant republican's extramarital affairs. It is completely hypocritical of any republican not to totally abandon and go after these men for their situations. It seems that it is ok for Republicans to engage in behavior like this when it is a Republican but we can not, must not forget the Republican uproar over the Clinton/Lewinski affair. Republicans in power are righteous when it benefits them politically but not when it may hurt their own party and it makes me sick.

Lisa P   July 9th, 2009 1:22 pm ET

"That's not the generation of candidates I'm trying to groom..."

What an unfortunate choice of words. Poor Michael Steele! Sometimes one just has to blush.

Hot Chick   July 9th, 2009 1:22 pm ET

When you say Laboratories....I think of RATS

Kyle   July 9th, 2009 1:22 pm ET

What a mess the Republican Party has become.

TRUTH   July 9th, 2009 1:20 pm ET

Michael Steele cant even control his party...I thought he was the chairman of the RNC. Worst chairman ever.

Chenna Benna   July 9th, 2009 1:20 pm ET

Steele says this as the beeds of sweat drip down his forehead. The RNC is full of hypocrites and no ideas.

Cindy   July 9th, 2009 1:19 pm ET

What the Republicans need is someone that can think with his head and not his penis!

Moonbeam   July 9th, 2009 1:19 pm ET

Mr. Steele is saying that only men of previous generation could be unfaithful to their spouses. Hmmm... How does he define "old"? What would be cut off age, in his opinion?
He seems to believe that men of Jindal's generation do not fool around!
Do they let Chairman Steele outside sometimes or is he simply total moron?!

Shawnee Britsbart   July 9th, 2009 1:19 pm ET

I hope gov Palin will get into the RNC with her fresh, down-to-earth conservative ideas, too.

Republicans are the American Taliban   July 9th, 2009 1:18 pm ET

You can just hear the crickets when he speaks. To him the Republicans destruction of our country is " old news "

"That's not the generation of candidates I'm trying to groom," Steele said, according to the Indianapolis Star.

He wants to "groom" younger Republicans...like Bristol Palin...

Chris from NY   July 9th, 2009 1:18 pm ET

It's an old school because it's not a Democrat that's involved. For someone that preaches family values it's not an old school. What other platform are you guys going to run on?

J   July 9th, 2009 1:18 pm ET

But I thought the Republicans are the Moral Authority??? Did he just change their whole platform?
I wonder if they will lose the lunatic base?

JediMasterMatt - Bethlehem, PA   July 9th, 2009 1:18 pm ET

Mr. Steele just doesn't get it! How can this be OLD NEWS when even fellow Republicans are still calling for the man to resign???

ike   July 9th, 2009 1:17 pm ET

It is disappointing to hear from GOP boss that Cheating on your spouse is old news or old school. Steal you speak like one who never had family value. If you do not have value for your family tell me how you will have value for the nation- the bigger family. GOP does not see anything good in our able president Obama because they have noting good in themselves.

cmd   July 9th, 2009 1:16 pm ET

What an idiot..........

Angie   July 9th, 2009 1:15 pm ET

why oh why do they keep letting this clown speak. he is a joke just like the rest of the repug party.----- Steele said the Republican Party should get back to its small-government roots and listed Republican governors like Haley Barbour of Mississippi, Tim Pawlenty of Minnesota, Bobby Jindal of Louisiana and Mitch Daniels of Indiana of Indiana as "laboratories for the ideas we believe in." Yeah right. I don't think they know what they believe in. Like sarah (pitbull quitter palin) they have become the butt of all jokes. LOL!!!!

You had your window Repubs, and you blew it!   July 9th, 2009 1:14 pm ET

Keep up the good work Steele. I'm just not sure how he has time to comment about this since they have come up with so many alternative ideas in the past year.

Let's review all the alternative ideas that Repubs have offered us with solid numbers behind them. Ok, ready? Go!

chirp chirp! chirp chirp!

Len in Washington   July 9th, 2009 1:13 pm ET

"Yesterdays news?" I think not.
GOP out of touch? "You betcha!"

Sherrol in Canada   July 9th, 2009 1:13 pm ET

To put it simply............Michael Steele is an idiot and an embarrassment!!!

F-Dog   July 9th, 2009 1:10 pm ET

Is Steele's Republican party no longer the part of family values? Or is it the "do as I say, not as I do party"?

The Lonely Libertarian of Liverpool NY   July 9th, 2009 1:09 pm ET

OMG I just can not stop laughing...Mr. Steele please stop your are killing me with these lies. I feel like I'm listening to a used car salesman who is telling me that this car will be better than all the lemons we have bought over the last forty years.
Please I'm just not going to buy this from the GOP any longer.
At least the democrats tell the truth about taxing and spending and expanding government. The GOP says they are for less Government, but they get elected and are just as much for progressive Government and “The One World order" as the democrats, frankly I can not tell the difference between the two parties any longer. The politicians help their rich friends get richer along with themselves, and “We the People" get screwed, loose our jobs, loose our homes, and always no matter who is in power we will pay more and more of our hard earned money to the government.

Mick   July 9th, 2009 1:09 pm ET

These Republicans are awesome. Who needs to stay up late to get their daily dose of comedy with guys like Steele around.

Fla.   July 9th, 2009 1:09 pm ET

Old news? LOL, hardly. Sanford's hypocrisy last week and updates on Ensign's unethical behavior were released just last night. Don't let the details get in the way of spinning & diversion.

Steele adds such comic relief. What a joke the GOP has become.

Dave, the truth teller   July 9th, 2009 1:08 pm ET

Hey, Lib monkeys, I just seen the new RCP poll numbers – Obama's approval rating is at 56% and Congress's is at 35%. 2010 is looking better and better. Now, start that hateful Lib monkey chattering.....

citizenjane   July 9th, 2009 1:08 pm ET

Steeles broom is getting quite a good work out this year. Quite the lumpy carpet, eh Steel?

SPQR753   July 9th, 2009 1:07 pm ET

A comment like that could only come from a spineless politician who, one moment criticizes the self-confessed pill-popping Rush Limbaugh and the next moment aoffer apologies to the same self-confessed pill-popping Rush Limbaugh. What's left for the GOP other than embrace a braniac like JOE the plummer?? How shamefully sad!!

GI Joe   July 9th, 2009 1:06 pm ET

Trying to Groom? Don't you mean Brainwash with your hate and fear?

Aspen Professor   July 9th, 2009 1:05 pm ET

Geee whiz Mr. Steele ... I am really going to miss the consistency of the Bush – Cheney- Rush- Rove – Hannity – O'Reilly – Coulter group.

You knew that you could count on them to follow the VALUES of the Repubs – Conservs ... the Lying, hypocrisy, arrogance, war without end, etc, etc ad nauseum..

Jeff in Virginia   July 9th, 2009 1:04 pm ET

What planet is Steele living on? Surely, it's not Earth.

jim   July 9th, 2009 1:03 pm ET

Old news because he says so? I think not. One doesn't escape decades of "do as I say, not as I do" politics by simply decreeing its old news.

Al-NY,NY   July 9th, 2009 1:02 pm ET

this guy is just too good to be true. Ignore your own indiscretions but constantly whine about the "other guys."

Terry from Texas   July 9th, 2009 1:02 pm ET

He has a point. Those scandals ARE, after all, yesterday's news. There will surely be a new Republican scandal today. They seem to be coming along regularly. You can't expect Republicans to deal with more than one Republican crook at a time. Get real!

Dave   July 9th, 2009 1:02 pm ET

I guess you and I think "old school" means something different.

No Incumbents 2010   July 9th, 2009 1:01 pm ET

Ensign and Sanford may not be the generation of candidates Steele is trying to groom, but they are the Republican officeholders who remain in office while being embraced by their Republican colleague.
Steele forgot to mention the future leaders of the GOP: David Vitter, Larry Craig, and Mark Foley.

Sarahmadinejad Palinannity is Also a Quitter Too - *Wink* *Wink*   July 9th, 2009 12:59 pm ET

No, Mr Steele, more like the NEW Rushcheneycan Party brought to you by the HYPOCRISY industrial complex.

I look forward every day to Steele's comments and observations...It cracks me up to see the token " black guy" of the GOP ,. since he's the most lame black guy I have evr seen in my life..Holy Crapola!

Shucks   July 9th, 2009 12:56 pm ET

I would be wanting to forget about it also. Only problem is they won't shut up long enough to allow it. So in other words they really have noone in particular that is a stellar standout. And the comedy continues.

GI Joe   July 9th, 2009 12:55 pm ET

No – Steele – it's not old. It's the same old stuff, different day. And the republicans will keep PREACHING THEIR HYPOCRICY.

It's not the sins, buddy, it's the total hypocricy.

Ed, Santa Fe, NM   July 9th, 2009 12:54 pm ET

So easy to dismiss them when they're GOP, huh? What a hypocrite this schmuck is.....

Dutch/Bad Newz, VA   July 9th, 2009 12:54 pm ET

Hey Mr. Steele, you can't brush these affairs onto the back burners. They are unethical in both cases and as the party leader, you should recommend to both of them that they resign. This is all going to come back to haunt you guys. Blago, Spitzer and Edwards left. It may be in your party's best interest for Ensign and Sanford to step down as well.

Melissa   July 9th, 2009 12:52 pm ET

And what exactly? Trying to blow it off Steele? You Republicans just can't take responsibility for anything, can you? So sick of it.
