Hutchison announced she will challenge Gov. Rick Perry.

(CNN) – Texas Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison said Monday she will challenge Republican Gov. Rick Perry in a primary matchup and reported raising over $6.7 million for the bid in the first half of the year.

"Today I am announcing that the exploratory committee is closed," Hutchison said at a Dallas press conference. "The campaign for governor of Texas is open for business. I am so excited and ready to go."

The four term senator has made no secret about her interest in challenging the more conservative Perry, having established an exploratory committee and campaign staff months ago.

In her announcement Monday, Hutchison said the fundraising haul far exceeded her initial goal of $5 million and will leave the campaign with more than $12 million cash on hand.

The 65 year-old former Texas State Treasurer also said she plans a formal kickoff in August when she will have time to tour the state.

Hutchison's cash haul compares to the $4.2 million Perry raised during the same period, though the 59 year-old Texas governor was barred from raising any money until the end of the legislative session in June. A spokesman for Perry's campaign said the governor has more than $9 million cash on hand.

Praising the "depth and width" of her support, Hutchison dismissed suggestions she had more time than Perry to raise money.

"We both had six months, we were both asking for commitments. We were both out there asking for money," she said.

Alberta– Explain to me just what a "Demacrate " is please???
Perhaps you meant "Democrat".

Billy J– If you voted for Kinky Friedman, your voter registration should be revoked. Please tell me you didn't actually waste your vote on that goofball nutcase.

Reformed Republican– Her name is Hutchison, not Hutchins.

Truth Teller– she didn't "become a multi millionaire Senator" nor "enrich her family from it". She's married to one of the partners in one of the largest most successful law firms in the country. Trust me, she was well monied long before she got involved in politics.

And to those who haven't figured it out yet– she IS a Republican and not a Democrat.

Karon - Houston   July 13th, 2009 5:43 pm ET

Don't like either one! Kay Bailey Hutchinson supported Bush all the way and Perry is a moron!

Ancient Texan   July 13th, 2009 5:42 pm ET

Mixed emotions....She would make a good Governor. But losing her from the Senate is a big loss.

KG, Twin Cities   July 13th, 2009 5:38 pm ET

She would have made a great VP selection for McCain. I guess she was too smart for him. Good luck, Senator.

Cali J   July 13th, 2009 5:37 pm ET

lila,
you and I are both right and wrong.
My words should say that Obama has reached a trillion dollar deficit the fastest in history. 6 Months. George Bush raised the deficit 1.75 trillion in 8 years. This is from fact check. If you have other sources, lay them on me.

Jamie, Garland, Texas   July 13th, 2009 5:37 pm ET

I don't see where some of you say she don't have a chance. She will smear Perry in a primary. And the fact that Texas is a conservative state, will be the next governor. She even stands a good chance at getting the nomination in 2012 if she plays her cards right. Although that is a long shot. Hutchinson has done more for Texas than their looney governor anyway. She has my support out of the republicans.

SC   July 13th, 2009 5:36 pm ET

It's not that I like another provincial Republican but hope you are slightly better than current Republican Gov. Perry for he screws up so bad that he even runs out of money to buy security cameras for monitoring illegal border crossing.

TexasAnnie *-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*   July 13th, 2009 5:29 pm ET

Kay started out in the Senate as a pretty good representative. Then she got caught up in the George Bush crowd. But she seems to have stepped away from GW the past year. So I'm hoping she wlll return to Texas as the Kay I knew when she first decided to run for office.

She would certainly be better than that nitwit Rick Perry that we've got in Austin right now. Perry couldn't find his way out of a wet paper bag on his best of days. We definitely need a change in Austin.

You know people as a True Texan myself ... that stupid remark about 'secession' is becoming an old and tired joke. Get over it! WE will NEVER part ways from the US .........

Alberta Treadway   July 13th, 2009 5:26 pm ET

Cali J, it's time we work with good people to change around what has happened to our econome. You can lay that on Bush's head, not Obama's. He's been in office a few short months, and can't perform miracles!! It will take years to turn around what Bush did to us in Eight years! I am a old republican who is not afraid to admit I voted for that idiot Bush, not once, but twice! I would be proud to have Kay as our Governor. As I would any good Dem or Republican! The sooner you screamers understand how most of us old republicans an Dem feel, the better off you will be. If we old folk can move on, so should the young ones into the 21st century. Mccain/palin would have been a disaster for 4 more years, as this was mounting to explode last yr.

And will Perry go join Todd Palin in Alaska to secede from the USA?

Sniffit   July 13th, 2009 5:21 pm ET

@ Roger in Ca, who asked "What's her position on secession?"

Agreeing or diagreeing with her policies aside, she seems somewhat bright...I'm guessing she recognizes that nonsense for what it is: fundraising rhetoric from lowlife cut-and-run bitter sore losers who only respect America and democracy when it works in their favor.

lila   July 13th, 2009 5:20 pm ET

Cali J,
"for the first time in history the federal deficit has surpassed one trillion dollars? "

Um, With Bush it passed 6 trillion in 8 years. Before Bush it went down under Clinton. Before Clinton The Gipper raised it over 2 trillion which was double all our other presidents combined. You see, The USA pays it's bills with tax money. When we cut taxes we bleed lady liberty. Those deficits are Lady Liberties life blood. Obama needs to raise taxes. He has them lower than the Reagan in the mid 80's by 15%! That a little truth the right wings hacks fail to tell you.

Truth Teller   July 13th, 2009 5:18 pm ET

If the liberals and Democrats support Bailey-Hutchison then she is toast. Becoming a multi-millionaire Senator and enriching her family from it is par for the course of you loser Democraps. Everything that Perry did during Katrina, Rita, and Ike for Texans and the evacuees from New Orleans is lost on your moronic little minds. We don't want anymore Californians moving here either.

no complete infrastructure failure during a crisis like Katrina

Alberta Treadway   July 13th, 2009 5:12 pm ET

I lived in texas for years, but call Nebr. my home. I am glad for Texas, and I voted Demacrate for Prez., but would be proud to vote for Kay. I hope the texans see the back side of Perry. He's a racist fool of the worst kind. I think Kay will work with Demacrates and Republicans alike, and is the good folk we need back in office. The trueth of the matter is, "We really don't care what their party filliation is, as long as they work together, get us health care, and put us back on a prosperouse path that Bush destroyed the last eight years".

Hen from Jacksonville, FL   July 13th, 2009 5:11 pm ET

I wish Senator Hutchinson the best of luck. She is one of the very few intelligent republicans out there and she will be better for Texas than that whack job Rick Perry.

Keeth in California   July 13th, 2009 5:11 pm ET

Senator Kay Bailey Hutchinson on Bill Clinton:
The President lied under oath as an element of a scheme to obstruct the due process of law, but we chose to look the other way? I cannot make that choice. I cannot look away. I vote `Guilty' on Article I, Perjury. I vote `Guilty' on Article II, Obstruction of Justice. I ask unanimous consent an analysis of the Articles of Impeachment be printed in the Record.

Senator Kay Bailey Hutchinson on Scooter Libby:
I certainly hope that if there is going to be an indictment that says something happened, that it is an indictment on a crime and not some perjury technicality where they couldn’t indict on the crime so they go to something just to show that their two years of investigation were not a waste of time and dollars.

Sam in Houston   July 13th, 2009 5:09 pm ET

Now that is how a true texan raises money ....move over sarah let a real politican show you how to raise money.

Billy J in Texas   July 13th, 2009 5:08 pm ET

I voted for her twice, and quit voting after the Clinton impeachments. The majority of the Republicans here in Texas are morons at best and complete criminals at worst. Gramm (responsible for the current bank debacle) is a good example. I will certainly vote for Kay Bailey against Perry, but am hoping for a better choice than either from the independents or Democrats. Maybe Kinky will run again, that is who I voted for last time... why not?

lila   July 13th, 2009 5:08 pm ET

I'm going to vote for her. I think Gov. Rick Perry is nuts. He took an oath to The United Sates of America and treated that like it meant little more than mouth wash. He might not like some of Obama's choices but that does not mean Texas is a fair weather friend ready to abandon the rest of our Country when the going gets tough. He is just so sleazy. Turned me off something awful.

Sam in Houston   July 13th, 2009 5:08 pm ET

Kay for Texas ....you got my vote...we need you Kay.
Good Luck and hope to see you in 2012 for president

Kelby In Houston, TX   July 13th, 2009 5:07 pm ET

Kay Bailey Hutchison has been around Texas Politics for YEARS! The first time I heard of her was when she ran for state treasurer. She has run for and won everything in between. While she is a Republican, she is as moderate and as intelligent as we can get from that party in this state. The Great State of Texas remains largely un scathed by this recession and hopefully we will be able to ride this thing out. But, if there is no viable Democratic candidate...and there is not, Kay is the way to go.
Hell, I might I even campaign for her

Cali J   July 13th, 2009 5:05 pm ET

Sorry to change the subject folks, but is there some reason that Drudge, CNN, or MSN are not stating that for the first time in history the federal deficit has surpassed one trillion dollars? Another historic event for Obummer. This is change we can live without. Wake up kool aide drinkers, this is your debt too. Go ahead and say this is Bush's fault! Make me laugh even harder. Tough to admit that the anointed one is just an empty suit community organizer who is in way over his head. The people he surrounds himself with are just as bad. This will be the worst administration ever. Even worse than Carter.

Reformed Republican   July 13th, 2009 5:04 pm ET

Good for you Sen. Hutchins!
Lets hope the "good" (aka normal) people of Texas elect you and dump this wild-eyed neocon chump Perry.
Perry has made Texas the laughing stock of the US with his tea-bagging, good ole' boy racist bleatings and absurd statements about leaving the US. The only thing he lacks is the mullet haircut, long-neck bottle of Bud and white hood to go with his "down home" dixie politics.
Thump him good Sen. Hutchins, thump him good! Bring respect back to the Lone Star state...

Perry need to secede himself from politics.

NVa Native   July 13th, 2009 4:56 pm ET

Perry is a radical nut, Hutchinson is not psycho enough for the Limbaugh "base". So good luck to her, and I'm sure the Dems would rather have Perry.

Bill from CA   July 13th, 2009 4:53 pm ET

Good for her. I'm not a Republican, but I realize whoever wins the GOP primary will likely win the governor's seat, and Rick Perry wants to secede from the country, making him a traitor. He's also known for making quite a lot of weird comments. Hutchinson reminds me a lot of Ann Richards for her outspoken, direct, no-nonsense methods of communication, which is what we need more in our government these days.

notfooledtx   July 13th, 2009 4:53 pm ET

FINALLY!!!

I doubt I'll vote republican in the governors race here, but I'd take Hutchinson over Perry. He's a wingnut – appointing creationists to the school board, eliminating health programs in the schools. Embarrassing the state with his ridiculous talk about succession.

He barely held on in the last election – heck, he almost lost to Kinky Friedman! Perry's a gonner, and to that I say good riddance.

She'll have a fight on her hands if Bill White the mayor of Houston gets in the race...but the outcome will be better if Perry is tossed out.

A in Austin   July 13th, 2009 4:50 pm ET

Perry has already "promised" us that Palin will be hanging out with him on the campaign trail. Kay, we are so ready for some honesty and common sense in the capital. This is one democrat who will be voting in the Republican Primary come spring.

Kay Baily Hutchison will make and excellent governor of Texas. Here is a Republican woman who is educated, experienced and intelligent unlike Sarah Palin who seems unqualified even as governor of Alaska. Ms. Hutchison stands hands-over Rick Perry whose claim to fame seems to be his threats that Texas should leave the union as he does not like the way things are going. Good luck to you Ms. Baily, I wish that I could cast a vote for you!

Ancientrivr   July 13th, 2009 4:45 pm ET

This is the sort of person who might have won McCain the Whitehouse. That said, I am particularly happy that Obama won given that Palin would have been VP.

Chris D.   July 13th, 2009 4:45 pm ET

Hey as long as Texas kicks that successionist out of office...what a hater and divider that gov. Texas has got right now!!

Dutch/Bad Newz, VA   July 13th, 2009 4:43 pm ET

Texans need to get their cowboy politicians out of office and actually put someone in their with a fuctional brain. I don't think a democrat will ever run the state of Texas, but the last election may prove me wrong. When I think back to when I was stationed there and then Gov. Bush was the head honcho, I knew something was seriously wrong with majority of Texans. Who put that numbskull in charge. For a guy who has so many Christian "values," he sure did execute alot of people in Texas.

Rosa Birmingham, AL   July 13th, 2009 4:40 pm ET

Folks, Kay is a Republican. There seems to be some confusion here. She can't take Texas back from the GOP, she is GOP.
That having been said, I still think she is qualified even though I disagree with her on almost every issue.

Anonymous   July 13th, 2009 4:38 pm ET

Kay Baily Hutchison will be an excellent candidate for governor of Texas and can show the people of this country that, unlike Sarah Palin, there are qualified and intelligent female Republican candidates. Her far more reasonable stance on issues that face this country are in great contrast to far-out current governor Rick Perry who earlier suggested Texas may leave the union when he didn't like the way things were going. Good luck Ms. Hutchison – I wish I could vote for you. This country needs strong women on the national stage.
