WASHINGTON (CNN) - Secretary of State Hillary Clinton delivers a major foreign policy speech and some Washington political observers ask: "Is she trying to get back in the spotlight?"

Since she slipped and broke her elbow last month, the secretary has had to cancel an international trip, and some inside-the-Beltway types are reading the tea leaves. Is it another step in the process of keeping Secretary Clinton from the real foreign policy decision-making in the Obama administration?

"The Daily Beast's" Tina Brown writes: "Left behind on major presidential trips, overruled in choosing her own staff - Hillary Clinton is the invisible woman at State."

"It's time for Barack Obama to let Hillary Clinton take off her burqa," she said.

hillary has most definately been sidelined.

what she doesn't appear to understand is that if she keeps taking cheap shots at her boss, she may find herself without the platform from which she speaks.

sr   July 15th, 2009 2:57 pm ET

That was in OB's plan all along. Hillary fell into his trap unfortunately to take on the 'job' with no voice.

Tom L   July 15th, 2009 2:55 pm ET

@Marcus
Clearly, things have to be explained to you. The reason he called President Obama the "messiah" is to mock people who blindly follow everything that he says and does. The media treat him like he is the chosen one. They never question anything he says or does. They, like you, are sheep. This is not to say he is a bad person, because I don't think that at all. There is just way too much worship of this man.

@FLA. – Hillary's lack of self respect has shown itself twice; once when her husband was playing games instead of axing Bin Laden, and when Obama shuffled her into a job, and then stripped away a great portion of the responsibilities...making her appear as though she's got something going on....geez...a blind man could see that one...

Obama's mantra – keep friends close, enemies closer.....

@Marcus, Great Lakes Illinois -

In your response to European-American, what's the big deal? We could as why you insist on calling Obama the president? That's highly debateable...also, Nazereth is spelled with a "Z."

Is this story really anything more than the gossipping that we expect from TMZ?

johnnie   July 15th, 2009 2:48 pm ET

Hilarly Clinton ,has been recovering from an injury (CNN) and put that in that into the truth.President Obama was glad to have (HILARY CLINTON) as his (SECRETARY OF STATE) and is looking forward ,for to get back to what she does best, making sure our country is secure. There is no divide before them ,they are a (TEAM).. So stop the baloney ,about there is something wrong ,between the President and the (SECRETARY OF STATE),,, ....... (BOGUS) she is going to help the President to stamp out the (GOP) to be on the outside ,looking in.

skyhawkdriver   July 15th, 2009 2:40 pm ET

It's my way or the highway for the annointed furhuer obama..there is not a chance that he is ever going to let hillary do anything but play second (or maybe third) fiddle..isn't it evident to everyone that he is already campaigning for 2012??..the further he pushes hillary in to the shadows the more it makes him stand out..he is,after our TSAR..our one and only all caring..all knowing..awe inspiring most benevolant leader in to the great beyond..that is of course if we are willing to give up everything for him..gee..and I thought bush was lost as a president..personally I hope hillary does run in 2012 and scalps the obumbler

Susie   July 15th, 2009 2:38 pm ET

Hillary is SO MUCH MORE INTELLIGENT – than her other White Housers that they are afraid of her. Imagine, a woman outshining those arses????? You Go Hillary!!!!

Sam in Houston   July 15th, 2009 2:36 pm ET

of course Obama is keeping at arm length. He cant have her showing him up to the world. Which he wants to rule. Hillary could have beaten him in 2008 but the media help put this man in office along with Acorn.
Trust me she would run against him in 2012 but she is so royal to her party she will wait. Hillary you always be my President. Love ya

Peter (CA)   July 15th, 2009 2:36 pm ET

Ah, the whiny right wingers are out in force again.

If Hillary was more prominent, they would be bleating that she is taking over because Obama can't handle it. She is doing her job without drawing all the attention.

Why don't you whiners get back to how to prop up Sarah Palin or some other such nonsense?

Stephen   July 15th, 2009 2:35 pm ET

Hillary and Bill are both power hunger and it won't be long before she comes out swinging. Neither of them are willing to play second fiddle to anyone, even to Obama. Just sit back, wait and watch the fireworks!!!!!

The Lonely Libertarian of Liverpool NY   July 15th, 2009 2:35 pm ET

Well at least she is out my state....

Ken   July 15th, 2009 2:26 pm ET

She is by far NOT being sidelined!

Plus the fact that I am sure that Obama does not want her to run against him in 2012. Which by the way, I would truly like to see her as our next President. Either in 2012 or 2016.

Doug Neumann   July 15th, 2009 2:25 pm ET

Anybody who knows anything about anything knows it would be wise to keep Clinton on a short leash. She is dangerous. I am disappointed that Obama even made her Secretary of State in the first place. The whole reason I voted for Obama was because I didn't want the Clintons in power. And then he went and gave her power, after she lost. The first of several bad decisions, which he is continuing to make.

RNC = DNC = politics as usual   July 15th, 2009 2:24 pm ET

@Marcus. "He has never referred to himself as one, nor do we refer to him as one."

I think Louis Farrakhan kicked off the term Messiah first, then there was a long line of celebreties and others calling him Savior, The One, and other things. Long list – easy to google to verify.

When he just smiled and didn't correct anyone he was using it in his campaign. Obama is not stupid. That was tacit approval – classic.

HBO   July 15th, 2009 2:22 pm ET

Oh for gods sakes. She had surgery and needed time to recover. She hasn't been "sidelined". Stop inventing stuff that doesn't exist.

Samantha   July 15th, 2009 2:19 pm ET

Why did Hillary take this job? It was obvious in the campaign and elsewhere that the two do not share foreign policy views and approaches. Hillary is not an appeaser. She is tougher than that. Obama doesn't want to let her toughness show because it will make him looker weak. But his own actions accomplish that end.

PFFT   July 15th, 2009 2:17 pm ET

You bet she has. She's a HUGE threat to the Obamanation, because she doesn't just toe the socialist line put forth by the supreme beloved ruler.

Keith, CO   July 15th, 2009 2:16 pm ET

Hillary is doing a fine job and is a wonderful team player. She is easily the smartest, toughest, woman in politics right now. Can't wait for the day media pundits are discarded. Their opinions are paid for makeing them nothing more the partisan manipulation.

Stuffit   July 15th, 2009 2:16 pm ET

If she were an integral part of the administration, she would have been involved in the recent treaty extension with Russia. Shouldn't our Constitutional Scholar have brought that treaty back to the Senate for ratification? Maybe there's a slight distinction between student and scholar and our pres is actually the former instead of the latter since a student can't be held accountable as a master of their area of study.

They cleaned up and are now in control of our government!

you all are so ridiculous. Consideracy for her injury, is what my President is doing. Don't you have any thing else to do. Go to school, get a job. I'm at work...

Besides the difficulties continue, so one person can't stop the show.

Obama is...all that.

If you don't like the white house, go to another country. That was my plan if Palin would have gotten in......

Robert   July 15th, 2009 2:09 pm ET

That is absurd! She broke her elbow and had to have surgery! Are people really that hard up for conspiracy theories? She hasn't been sidelined, much of her job involves behind the scene negotiations with other country’s leaders. Saying she needs to take off her burqa is just offensive, a juvenile attempt at being controversial.

Josh Bonilla   July 15th, 2009 2:08 pm ET

"Trying to get back in the spotlight?" I thought it was her job to deliver major foreign-policy speeches....

dave   July 15th, 2009 2:08 pm ET

I Don't think so..... we never cared for hillary clinton – until she started to work for Obama adm.
think she is doing a great job !!

keep it up !!

Didi   July 15th, 2009 2:06 pm ET

She's not sidelined. She's always worked behind the scenes, but that doesn't take away from the fact that she's a workhorse. Women like her keep this country running. Lord, I can only imagine how much work she's busy doing at State, just like she did behind the scenes at Rose Law firm and for her husband's gubernatorial bid. You go girl!

nom deplume   July 15th, 2009 2:06 pm ET

Fla. says "Hillary Clinton is doing a great job as Secretary of State, as I confidently knew she would."

I agree. It is just as good as the job being done by lt. governors in Mass., NY, and AK after the incumbents moved up. In fact, based on what I haven't seen in the papers, and where Obama's poll numbers are going on international issues (with americans, not europeans), I'd say she is doing a fantastic job. She should keep up the good work.

Gary D.   July 15th, 2009 2:05 pm ET

The Messiah is doing just great. Leave him alone

Chris   July 15th, 2009 2:05 pm ET

She's delivering a major foreign policy speech. It seems she is trying to do the job of the Secretary of State. It has little to do with being in the "spotlight."

Good one   July 15th, 2009 2:03 pm ET

Hilary is doing exactly what she needs to do - getting work done without being a distraction or embarassing her office and/or the President. The same people mouthing off about her invisibility will also be front and centre in criticizing her for tring to hug the limelight. Keep up the good. We the people are paying attention.

Joyce   July 15th, 2009 2:02 pm ET

Hilary is not being sidelined. All of this talk is an attempt by some people to stir controversy between Obama and Hilary. They're both team players. Hilary was immediately on trips abroad paving the way for the new administration foreign policy change as soon as she stepped in office.
Give the woman a break, she had an accident. Off course she has to slow down a bit.

I for one am thankful for her contributions to the country. Like her or not, don't deny someone credit when it's due.

I believe in her patriotism and professionalism.
And I do believe Barrack knows that about her.

To the media, stop this nonsense. The administration has way too many problems to resolve than get side tracked on childish issues.

Grow up.

Steve/Boston   July 15th, 2009 2:01 pm ET

Hellooooo...she broke her arm and couldn't do certain things. Yikes, what a tempest in a teapot. As if HRC could ever be sidelined...and by the way?....she's delivering a major policy address in Washington tonight.

You journalist types, and those of you fixated on hating Obama need to get over your bad selves, and do and write things that actually matter. You cleary have too much free time on your hands for pinheaded questions and answers.

Take of her burqa...what an insult to Muslim custom and religion.

Last time I checked, the POTUS...no matter who it is...is allowed to do some foreign travel and to meet with other heads of state.

Laverne   July 15th, 2009 1:58 pm ET

Some people just love mess! Hillary lost her bid for presidency and chose to take the job as SOS vs. returning to the senate. That was her option from President Obama and her choice to do so. She is doing great and I doubt very seriously that he is trying to pin her down or hold her back, because quite frankly Hillary can't be held back. POTUS has a lot on his plate and stalking Hillary to stay on the sidelines is probably not on his to do list. I agree with Marcus regarding the 'Messiah" comment. Do you people see something besides a great leader who really cares about his family and country and want to serve to try and make America better for all people? I know most have gotten so use to the opposite, but Messiah is a title he did not ask for, but rather has been bestowed upon him, by ignorant people. I am sure there is some frustrations on Hillary part, but she will do just fine and be just fine!

Herbie   July 15th, 2009 1:57 pm ET

When are people going to stop being so hateful. Secty of State Hillary Clinton is doing a great job doing what she is doing. She knows her
importance and knows the job that she intends to get done. Give her the credit she is due. BEST OF EVERYTHING MRS. CLINTON

Rose   July 15th, 2009 1:57 pm ET

Of course she has been sidlined but watch out for Bill Clinton if this continues, it wouldn't take much for him to go against Obama if he coninues to leave Hillary out of the loop. I think Hillary got this job because Bill pressed Obama to ensure she got a top job, it was after that meeting between Bill and Obama that Bill agree to campaign for Obama, I believe he wanted a pay back for his efforts to help Obama get elected, now Obama is reversing himself once again.

C.C. Independent   July 15th, 2009 1:57 pm ET

Kevin, left-wing dictator? You and the Fox Cronies can get a life. Clinton is doing a good job as S.O.S. but right now her injury is causing a slow progress. Give her time to heal!

Obama is the manchurian candidate. The "political machine" told him to keep his friends close and his enemies closer; that is why Hillary is his SOS. Clinton works for him and would have been a lot more effective and powerful in the senate (she also would have been a threat to Obama). Bet she is kicking herself now.

Larry   July 15th, 2009 1:49 pm ET

Hillary needs to be taked out of the capacity of Secretary of State. I'll never understand why Obama offered it to her in the first place.

Hillary is as arrogant and delusional as her husband. If she really believes she's been "chosen" (her messiah complex) it shows how delusional she is.

On her trip to China she expressed that "human rights take a back seat to economic matters", thus losing her credibility with the Chinese. Are you kidding, the way we preach human rights in this country. She probably thought she was pulling something over on them.

I wish Hillary were half as smart as she thinks she is.

rick   July 15th, 2009 1:48 pm ET

You guys make a big deal out of everything. she had minor surgery and she was recouperating whats the big deal, She is not being sidelinne and she will never be done politically. Very smart lady!

ONCE UPON A HORSE   July 15th, 2009 1:45 pm ET

nothing better than looking for a fire where there is very little smoke. As outspoken as SOS Clinton is I'm sure she would be the first to let you know if she were being sidelined. Just like some won't give President Obama a chance after just 7 months, Mrs. Clinton has only been SOS for the same time period. For God's sake people Rome wasn't built in a day and a new administration wasn't built in 7 months.

Simmy   July 15th, 2009 1:44 pm ET

You are certainly right. Except that I would never discredit the True Messiah. That is why I put it in quotes and lower case. I am a true American too, but I do like a bit of sarcasm and since hyphenating seems to be good for some, wise white men ought to be able to benefit from there own experiences in life. I feel as a wise white man I have a greater ability to make the decision to hyphenate, more so say than a latina woman.
Just for you I will now refer to P-Bo as "the untouchable one".

Hillary...you betcha   July 15th, 2009 1:38 pm ET

And she will rise..! As soon a Sarah Palin appeared on the national scene in 2008 the media and the hateful pundits actually saw right off that here another woman who has what it takes to be a leader and therefore she too had to be destroyed with all the ridicule they could muster as the saw that Sarah was a threat to their plan , namely to get Obama elected as President at all costs for reasons the public was not privy to. But time will tell...! And Sarah Palins' destiny will be hers to become a great leader and President of these United States of America.

She will put the broken country together again...and that is the Gospel Truth...come hell or high water....!!!!

Great Point!   July 15th, 2009 1:37 pm ET

From another perspective, the writer is absolutely correct in suggesting the Burqa is a custom that positions women as second-class citizens.

A big shame that this is happening in this century when we have women leadership everywhere.

We know republicans like to worship dumb asses like George Bush Jr., who can't even put a complete sentence together. Ad Sarah Palin, an imbacile who can't stay on ANY job. Plus she can't even think for herself. Just like the last republican who STOLE the white house.

annie s   July 15th, 2009 1:35 pm ET

Oh good heavens – miss one trip abroad and all of a sudden there are dastardly back room deals to....do what exactly? Hillary Clinton was a brilliant choice for Secretary of State, and she has been fully engaged in her duties. One thing I might add, though, she isn't supposed to be a cowgirl, making foreign policy all on her own. She was appointed by the President to publicly represent his policies.

I'm far more interested in the implication that the burqa is used here to symbolize a woman who is being degraded.

Wake up Muslim community – notice that the writer is using the Burqa to symbolize a lack of respect, and lack of identity.

Alex   July 15th, 2009 1:28 pm ET

Hillary accepted the position. If she really has been sidelined, it's her fault for taking the job. It's a lot more courtesy than she would have shown him if she had won.

Deborah/Kansas City   July 15th, 2009 1:26 pm ET

People will pick at anything this President does and find every reason to spew their hatred and bigotry. I have never seen anything like it in my whole life. Hillary has been hurt and needed some time off. I'm glad she is taking care of herself. She has elevated herself and restored her image, thanks to President Obama giving her this chance. She is doing a great job, all jobs have their frustrations, I understand the high standards and vetting process are cumbersome; but in this administration they are necessasary. We must have faith restored that all the people hired are not just good old boy cronies, who have no experence and are not qualified to to the job; like in the last administration

By the way, this isn't journalism, this is speculation. If CNN would stick to the basics they learned in journalism 101, you would beat Fixed Noise and MSNBC hands down. Unlike your leadership in the GOP who cut each others throats, the Dems seem to work together, something you so called conservatives should learn. And for the last time, Hillary is not running in 2012. She has made that clear. Furthermore, if the GOP can start coming up with a game plan for America instead of finding ways to try to tear President Obama down, you might have a cance in 2016. Oh yes, I typed 2016, you have no chance in 2012, no chance of regaining the Senate, House or the White House. You can thank George, Dick, John and Sarah for that. Oh and one more thing. Do you know something we don't know? For you to say that about him (Obamma) is discrediting the Messiah, Jesus of Naserath.

Have a great day!

Hillary? Hillary who?

Obama wants to keep her from running against him in 2012 or undermining him in the Senate. What happens to her now is none of his concern, she basically done politically.

Isn't it obvious? Of COURSE she has been sidelined..... Obama is a typical left-wing dictator more interested in total and absolute power than anything else.

No. Hillary Clinton is doing a great job as Secretary of State, as I confidently knew she would.

Hillary is NOT a quitter–you betcha!

What do you expect after her recent comments concerning the "messiah".
