Sen. Kerry is defending the president's cap-and-trade energy plan against criticism by Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin.

WASHINGTON (CNN) – Call it Kerry vs. Palin, Round 2.

Massachusetts Democrat Sen. John Kerry, a longtime Obama ally, and Alaska's Republican Gov. Sarah Palin are sparring again, this time over climate change and energy policy.

Kerry has taken to liberal Web site The Huffington Post to respond to an op-ed by Palin published Tuesday in the Washington Post.

In her op-ed, Palin slams President Obama's cap-and-trade energy plan, saying she believes the plan is "an enormous threat to our economy."

In his response, Kerry takes a dig at Palin in an apparent reference to Tina Fey's "I can see Russia from my house" take-off on Palin.

"The global climate change crisis threatens our economy and our national security in profound ways," writes Kerry.

"Governor Palin need no look further than the view from her front porch in Alaska to see how destructive this crisis can be," says Kerry, pointing to a two-year-old New York Times report about a small Alaskan village facing destruction because of melting permafrost.

Kerry also takes issue with Palin's focus on the likely economic consequences of Obama's plan. "Reading Gov. Palin's op-ed too often it sounds like the only threats America faces are solely economic. But that's not what our intelligence experts and military leaders tell us," writes Kerry.

Kerry also says Palin is "wrong" about the job creation projected to occur under Obama's plan and about the fact that the plan will yield "new, clean energy sources."

The two pols sparred nearly three weeks ago when Kerry reportedly joked that it was Palin – rather than South Carolina's Republican Gov. Mark Sanford – who should have gone missing. In her counter-attack, Palin took a swing at the senator's face: "... [T]he way he said it, he looked quite frustrated, and he looked so sad, and I just wanted to reach out to the TV and say, 'John Kerry, why the long face?'" she joked.

I don't need scientific proof of global warming. . .it's there to smell each and every day.

Gosh, no matter where in America one lives, one only has to step outside their door and take a big whiff. . . phew. . .the air reeks.

"History repeats"?

Actually genius, she has run a city as she was Mayor of Wasilla and she was elected Governor and balanced a few budgets along the way.

Your coward of a Senator talks a good game, but runs around in jets and is good at spending money, as long as it is mine.

Sorry, I didn't vote for Bush eithe as the third part candidate were better than the other two fools, and as I said I am no fan of Palin, but facts are tricky things, even to a "liberal genius" like you.

Sniffit   July 15th, 2009 12:34 pm ET

@ Dale, who said "Check the Southern himisphere…… You will find the ice is expanding faster than loss in the northern hemisphere. They don't tell you that. "

Blatantly untrue. Both polar ice caps are shrinking (note: there's a difference between the polar ice caps shrinking and the presence of more sea ice...sea ice is actually evidence of the polar ice caps degrading). That being said, there are a few glaciers that have been reported to show growth, even in CA, but that is primariy attributed to, yep, you guessed it, climate change in those regions and they are outliers overall. People citing the presence of more sea ice or growth of one glacier in Norway, for example, while ignoring the overall shrinkage present for most of the glaciers in that region, are just trying to trick you.

Moreover, the planet's core is not determinative of weather events on the surface...whoever told you that, or implied it to get you to disbelieve the measurable, empirical, scientifically gathered evidence of the increasing rapidity of climate change, is a retard. Thanks for playing.

Problem is, history repeats, there are facts that the whole global warming issue is indeed a farce. There are way too many scientists that show plenty of evidence against it. And then all the government sponsered ones who support it (for their grant money, of course).

kdiriss   July 15th, 2009 12:26 pm ET

After reading some of these posts I know have a better understanding of how that clown Bush got appointed/elected. There is an amazing amount of ignorance and hypocrisy on the Right, it's no wonder the Republican party is dying a slow death.

Cap&Trade – the US already has a successful cap/trade program that was implemented in the mid '90s to curb emissions of sulphur dioxide. As usual the folks on the right spout opinion as fact and as usual they are WRONG. The cap/trade program has been a tremendous success; actual program cost was approximately 30% – 35% of the original estimates, rate payers/energy producers saw costs go down, and we achieved the emission compliance 3 years ahead of plan. Please those of you on the right do a little research and use facts to support your position – no matter how ridiculous it may be.

Climate Change is real, for you naysayers on the Right please visit a library or read a newspaper; anything to get your facts straight. It's astounding in this day and age that there are folks who actually believe that environment is a-ok. By the way – unusually cool overnight temps in July does not support the conclusion that climate change is not real; it's quite the opposite.

Palin = stupid, enough said.

Alicia   July 15th, 2009 12:24 pm ET

Palin is a coward and punk. She blames the media, resigns with no questions asked. THEN, she invites the media to be even more evasive. Does she take credit for any of her self inflicted damage. The media is just standing there with a camera recording a train wreck.

She keeps posting on her sight. Come out of your comfort zone and have some courage.

Why don't we just go back to growing cotton and corn by hand and singing Kumbaya in the dark?

Sooo, Kerry refers to intelligence experts and reports when contradicting Palin's nonsense, yet I didn't see one reference to expert scientific or economic opinions in Palin's op-ed...shocker...it was all ideological mumbo-jumbo.

I'll take opinions from MIT scientists and other experts over the ideological "this is the way the world is SUPPOSED to work" ramblings of Boehner, Palin and the rest of the banana bunch anyday. I'll give you this clue for free: ideology does not determine reality, rather, empirical evidence should inform ideology.

Deborah/Kansas City   July 15th, 2009 12:17 pm ET

Unfortunately, there are people who will follow Sara Palin were ever she goes, regardless of the harm it does to our country. Cap and trade should have happened a long time ago, to make the worst polluters pay for their crimes, or clean up their processes. President Bush eliminated any penalties, or oversight, for these huge poluters. Republicans are always for big business over anything else. Even the health and welfare of our citizens. I don't understand why people can not see that and continue to vote against their own best interests. I guess it's a religious thing. We should be very careful that we don't end up like these other countries who are run by religions. They are the most brutal, least open minded governments; and they do not allow their people any freedom, to have an optioion, different than the governments. I fear, that is where politicians like Sara Palin, would take us.

Lori in St Pete   July 15th, 2009 12:16 pm ET

Mary LV   July 15th, 2009 12:15 pm ET

Man is not important enough to control the earth's climate. The earth has been heating up and cooling down since the beginning of time.

The ice core samples pulled from Alaskan glaciers last winter showed there was more carbon dioxide when the glaciers were forming than is in the atmosphere today, and I don't think the cavemen caused that.

This global warming issue is a big farce and scare tactic. The only ones benefiting from this are the politicians and their contibuting cronies who are well invested in making the changes (think Pelosi & her husband who are heavily invested & stand to make a lot of money off of this). The losers are you and I who will pay through the nose for our energy use.

NO to Cap & Trade and all this other crap that is in the name of "saving our planet". By the way, what are we going to do with all the mercury that is in the mandatory energy saving light bulbs?????

Ronald Reagan   July 15th, 2009 12:15 pm ET

I appreciate the desire to take care of our planet, but I think this global warming thing has gone too far. Sure, we can limit emissions from vehicles to help things out some, but 2 of the biggest sources of global warming seem to be out of our grasp: the Sun and volcanos. Why don't we just ask the almighty President and his cronies to turn the Sun down a few notches and plug up all the volcanos. Good grief people. There are more important things (that we can actually deal with ourselves) to worry about. Liberal idiots.

Don   July 15th, 2009 11:36 am ET

Let's see now. In the 70's it was global cooling. That scare tactic totally failed. Then it became global warming but things weren't heating up as planned. So now to catch it going in either direction the church of enviro freaks now have coined climate change. Unbelievable. I agree now that I personally experience climate change everyday of my life. Today I plan to drive my gas guzzling V8 Mercedes in order to warm up the poor and cold people of the planet. Enviro freaks remind me of how many millions of people need a cause no matter how stupid it is.

John   July 15th, 2009 11:35 am ET

WOW. does Palin have any real skills or is she all talk !

Vern   July 15th, 2009 11:35 am ET

Kerry is right on this one. Palin need to talk about what she knows..which is how to QUIT!!!

Tom in Florida   July 15th, 2009 11:31 am ET

Bet he's never heard that one before. No wonder she's the candidate of the stupid.

John   July 15th, 2009 11:29 am ET

Kerry – 2
Palin – 0

DT   July 15th, 2009 11:28 am ET

Get 'em Kerry...get 'em...

Andy J, NY, NY   July 15th, 2009 11:28 am ET

yeah, thats why here in new york the temperatures have been in the 40's the past 4 nights. global warming, what a killer.

not to mention the FACT that temperatures have been cooling for more than 5 years. That is a FACT. look it up you "holocaust deniers"

GTF out of here with the global warming garbage. poll after poll ranks it at the BOTTOM of the list, in terms of what is important to Americans.

Of course, we all know that its more about "global governance," right Mr. Gore, et all? you scum bags.

awaitingliberalizationbyCNN   July 15th, 2009 11:27 am ET

Kerry is such a funny loser, he is wonderful about making sexist stupid comments and would have probably made a worse president than Obama. Lets all go back and revisit all the jokes made about Kerry, another democratic liberal loser.

skyhawkdriver   July 15th, 2009 11:26 am ET

That's the way old horse face..just another example of the useless people holding office as a member of the spoiled brat elitist class sitting in the united states senate..any question why he is known as live shot kerry??

Chris D.   July 15th, 2009 11:26 am ET

Americans need to read the bill, and get facts from the EPA dept., or other professional/educational publications......this bill represents the future. It is a bill that will set America on a new energy path, reduce pollution, and create jobs....these steps will build on top of the good in our economy, and energy that we already have...........
I hate the arguing of the right, and the left.......both love America, why can't we support each other, and possibly form a hybrid among our decisions, and policies.

Hugo   July 15th, 2009 11:25 am ET

Kerry is a prime example of a career politician that needs to be voted out of existence. It never ceases to amaze me that these ultra elitist liberals want to give away middle class Americas money to the impoverished, key concept is other peoples money, not their own. I wonder how much money Kerry has stuffed in his pocket from his time in public service, I wonder what kind of catsup is in our government cafeterias or that our military uses?

larry buchas   July 15th, 2009 11:24 am ET

This is good theater.

I'm curious. Who wrote Sarah's op-ed? We know she didn't. Otherwise our heads would explode.

Disgusted   July 15th, 2009 11:24 am ET

Ignore her boys...Maybe she'll go away.
Not likely, she's just chumming the waters for her next book.
An appropriate title for her first book would be "Mein Kampf".
The next one would be "I Can See Russia".
Available at a Wal-Mart near you.

T   July 15th, 2009 11:24 am ET

Palin can not see beyond her nose.

Mike   July 15th, 2009 11:24 am ET

Trying to fight cap and trade is the closest thing to "evil" in modern politics... has Sarah Palin no sense of shame?

notfooledtx   July 15th, 2009 11:22 am ET

As expected, Palin is still a laughingstock. Whoever wrote this op ed probably wrote it in the 80's and just recirculated it with her name on it. Although, the composition of the op ed was pretty shallow, so maybe she did write it herself.

Aunt Bea and Opie   July 15th, 2009 11:21 am ET

Sarah Einstein says the Earth is flat and global warming is a hoax. These are just some of her ExxonMobil talking points, for more info tune into Limbaugh.

Bob Evano   July 15th, 2009 11:20 am ET

Down goes palin! Down goes palin!

That's what he said.

Sam Sixpack   July 15th, 2009 11:19 am ET

On the science channel, they say the sun will eventually explode and vaporize the earth, so, you better give John Kerry a bunch of money.

Yes, the climate is getting warmer. So, why is it, again, I have to give even more money to fat, greedy, rich guys?

Nev   July 15th, 2009 11:19 am ET

Bravo, Mr. Kerry.

Ricky Hargrove   July 15th, 2009 11:19 am ET

Palin continues to make a fool of herself and the Republican party. The Republicans have enough problems with there image and Palin just deepens there problems.
I must say it is nice to get a little comedy relief from her unusual and ignorant comments.

phyllis   July 15th, 2009 11:19 am ET

Sen. Kerry is right on this, Sarah Palin needs to clean up her own back yard, before she starts talking about others. But she can't do that anymore can she, because she has left her office before her time is up, howbout that. She needs to go on and shut up, for someone who is leaving the government behind she sure has a lot to say, this person is such a camera hound, she can not be helped, she is her own worst enemy, she keeps talking when she should shut up. thank you

C   July 15th, 2009 11:18 am ET

If the idiot Palin doesn't care about Alasaka, how can we as voters expect her to care about the rest of the country? She resigns as soon as the heat in the kitchen gets uncomfortable, how would she react to the pressures of the world on her shoulders? She is a 15 minute wonder than needs to move on and teach classes on how parents should handle teenage pregnancies.

Tony   July 15th, 2009 11:18 am ET

If she is so irrelevant, why do they(dems and libs) worry about her so much?

Scott in Troy   July 15th, 2009 11:17 am ET

the heat coming from John Kerry's overly large head is probably the leading cause of any global warming. By the way- if you lived in michigan, you would laugh at the thought of global warming. I am sure Kerry is all set to make a bazillion on cap and tax, just like Algore is. No- nothing wrong with that is there.

Me in Big D   July 15th, 2009 11:17 am ET

Go away Kerry! People listen less to you than they do Palin, you overpuffed buffoon!

jamie chastain   July 15th, 2009 11:17 am ET

John McCain rues the day he ever brought this airhead onto the national scene. Palin is the Republican party's answer to Plaxico Burress. She's so dumb she doesn't know she's a dummy!

George   July 15th, 2009 11:16 am ET

Dear Senator Kerry,
You should not waste valuable time responding to Sarah Palin.
Her comments and/or criticisms need to be treated with the contempt that they deserve. As intelligent as you are, you will not be able to authenticate stupidity.

Edgar   July 15th, 2009 11:16 am ET

I love when former Democratic Presidential Candidate and current Senator, John Kerry, attacks Gov. Palin. For pundits to claim that Gov. Palin's political career is over, this type of response is indicative that she scares the hell out of liberals when she speaks about issues.

Cant wait for Round 3...

Kim   July 15th, 2009 11:15 am ET

Wow. Who in there right mind actually believes Ms. Palin knows anything about something as complex as climate change and can-and-trade? I suspect she will have a ghost-writer and thinker and she will be only a mouthpiece. She destroyed her credibility a long time ago,.

gary   July 15th, 2009 11:15 am ET

frankenstein kerry is an idiot palin is not much better, in case kerry forgot people have a right to disagree with about the stimules plan he does not have to worry since he married the heiress to heinz, i think kerry and all liberals are jealous of palin because she worked her way up from the bottom like most americans not with a silver spoon in her mouth like kerry kennedy besides she angers women because she is goodlooking and that makes alot of women jealous of her

Proud Member..Party of No   July 15th, 2009 11:14 am ET

The global warming fraud continues. Cap and trade is yet another example of this administration believing that the public is so stupid that they can ram anything through, at any cost, without explaining it and without anyone reading it. Wake up, democrats....you're being taken for a ride again and we conservatives are unwilling passengers.

Anny   July 15th, 2009 11:14 am ET

Yes every man and women that find Palin not capable of being President or vice president or even holding an elected office should say so and let her know that she doesn't have the support of the people of this country or at least the support of her Party......McCain did her a dis-service by making her his VP running mate......she wasn't ready then and she isn't ready now.......but it has all went to her head and she really believes that she is the CATS MEOW........remember looks aren't everything........you have to have some intelligence up there in that brain........... and she doesn't have a brain.........

mike stricker   July 15th, 2009 11:14 am ET

Erratum: Tina Fay did NOT say "I can see Russia from my house." Or front yard - whatever. Sarah Palin did.
Tina Fay's impersonation was made all the funnier - and sadly ironic - since she took Palin in large verbatim chunks to satirize her.

Peace   July 15th, 2009 11:14 am ET

Sarah is going to regret very much why she has quitted the job. As human nature, they respect the Office one is holding and not the person. We all like to be respected and once it is not there, you feel like you are worthless! Am afraid to say that soon thats what Sarah will go through.

Beverly   July 15th, 2009 11:13 am ET

Palin does seem to concentrate on particular items repeatedly, consistently overlooking anything to do with environmental responsibility. She never acknowledges the environmental desecration that Alaska's policies have had on their lands and animals, many policies which she continued or created herself.

Farva Falana   July 15th, 2009 11:12 am ET

There is no such thing as a global climate change crisis; that is just made up language for a false scare. The earth is continually changing, and we know that the areas around the Arctic Circle (incl Alaska) are still in the re-creating phase and constantly shifting. Sorry, it's no warmer now than it has ever been in my almost 74 years. It is so asinine for politicians to scare the world on made-up scenarios. THERE IS NO CRISIS. p.s. This world belongs to Almighty God, not the politicians in DC. God can/will fix anything He needs to in His time.

DC   July 15th, 2009 11:11 am ET

If Kerry were a smart politician, he would be keeping a low profile. Looks like he is opting for a new job working for Obama. If he wants to check out climate change, he can come on over to my place in Michigan. If this is global warming, I must have it backwards because I have seen frost in July here and it hasn't been in the 80's only a couple days this month. The politicians are all crying wolf along with goof ball Gore, "The man that invented the Internet".

Palin is a nitwit... she wouldn't know science if it hit her in the head...

Cindy   July 15th, 2009 11:08 am ET

Kerry is being so mean to poor Palin. What is she going to quit now?

Matt Sobel   July 15th, 2009 11:08 am ET

Obama and Kerry will do what's right. The American Jewish Congress supports Obama... my bretheren around the world support him.... It is times like this that Palin and her ilk show their true faces... under the inch thick layer of foundation.

Republicans= Party of NO (with no solution)   July 15th, 2009 11:08 am ET

Palin is a joke. I'm tired of these right wing nuts and their idol speaking stupidity all the time...

Willy Brown   July 15th, 2009 11:08 am ET

Kerry you are a loser from MA riding the coat tales of a rich woman who was married to a replulican. Shhhh........

Kerry should check out the view from the swift boat.

It appears Palin has chosen to be a spokesperson for big oil.
For her to deny global warming, our need for independence, and
lie and distort the facts is typical Palin hypocrasy and ignorance.
CNN, please let her go away. We do not need your constant
headlines, pushing her down our throats.
