Poll: Obama approval rating dips under 60 percent

President Obama's approval rating has dropped under 60 percent according to a CNN Poll of Polls released Friday.
President Obama's approval rating has dropped under 60 percent according to a CNN Poll of Polls released Friday.

WASHINGTON (CNN) - An average of five national polls conducted in July indicates that President Barack Obama's approval rating has slipped under 60 percent.

Fifty-seven percent of Americans surveyed approve of the job Obama's doing as president, according to a CNN Poll of Polls compiled and released Friday, with 36 percent disapproving. In early June, Obama's average approval rating was 62 percent. It dropped a point to 61 percent by mid-June and stayed at that level through the rest of the month.

"Recent polls indicate that Obama's lowest ratings - and biggest losses - come on the public's perception of how he is handling the economy," says CNN Polling Director Keating Holland. "And the latest CNN/Opinion Research Corporation poll shows a double-digit drop in the number of Americans who think that the President has a clear plan for solving the country's problems. The public may not be as willing to give Obama the benefit of the doubt after six months on the job as they did when he first took office."

So how does Obama compare to his most recent predecessors six months into office?

George W. Bush also drew a 57 percent approval rating six months into his presidency, in July of 2001. Bill Clinton stood at 48 percent in July 1993. Two-thirds of Americans polled approved of George H.W. Bush's job as president in July 1989, and six out of 10 gave Ronald Reagan the thumbs-up in July 1981.

"Reagan, like Obama, got approval ratings in the high 50s and low 60s during most of his first summer in office," Holland says. "But as unemployment remained high, Reagan's approval rating dropped below 50 percent for the first time in November of 1981, and it stayed under 50 percent for the next two years."

CNN's Poll of Polls consists of five national surveys with interviews conducted in July: The Gallup tracking poll (July 13-15); Ipsos/McClatchy (July 9-13); Diageo/Hotline (July 9-13); USA Today/Gallup (July 10-12) and CBS News (July 9-12). The Poll of Polls does not have a sampling error.

He virturally has no understanding of economics's and solely gives preference to municipal and governmental employees with no interest in the financial and private sector. He lacks comprehension of mortgage securities which can be insured through mortgage insurance preminums at zero taxpayer costs, he wants to eliminate the entire lending industry with only stringent underwriting guidelines wiping out 80% of existing and prior homeowners.

The sooner he steps down, the better.

He's just a puppet for the puppet master, Rahm Emmanuel. Rahm and David Axlerod are really running the country. We are now a Socialist country, thanks to Change Campaign, and we're headed full steam ahead towards full blown communism. Anyone disagree? Pick up an actual book and ready how Lenin took over Russia. WAKE UP AMERICA.

numbers are the easiest things to be manipulated.

america has been over their heads now they want an instant pill to pull them out of a mess they have been languishing because of politics of the last 4 years . . . why didn't this happen before? because we had good laws but they were not allowing folx to turn profits quick. you wanted mega profits, mega companies, mega bonuses?

Now you got a mega mess and a president who cares about the littlest of us, now you're griping that he's weak because he's not a warmonger and he wants to help those who find it hard to help themselves.

    Pathetic, greedy, judgmental, spoiled americans.

    poor souls.

Wait until he starts up his reparations talk.
Thats right folks he is going to pay our of the US treasury for occurrences and history of the 1850's. Get over it.

The generations need to get past it. No one is hot to move back to somalia, kenya, etc... and are you happier if you were born in the USA or born in Jamaica. Give me a break. Get over it and get past it. Everyone has an opportunity here. Even a man born in Kenya can become the President of the United States and have the opportunity to lie cheat steal and screw up the american dream for everyone.

So his approval rating is around what the norm is, and you pile on like it's somewhere close to where Bush the idiots rating ended up. You are obviously desperately seeking something, anything, to hang your right-wing hater hats on, no matter how tenuous.

Does this mean you are admitting there's no media conspiracy to aggrandize Obama's performance? Does this mean you are ready to admit there's no rose colored glasses on? Of course not; that would take away your manufactured reasons for sanctimonious outrage, not to mention put the right wing smearcasters out of business.

So, go ahead and wallow in what little meaness you can derive from the superlative performance of this administration. Keep your party before country blinders on so you can continue ignoring the immeasurably huge damage conservatives have wrought on us all. Keep telling yourself that the extraordinary efforts of this administrations failing to correct 8 years of misguided misrule in six month constitutes a failure. Heck, you blamed Clinton for everything, so don't get on your high horse now and pretend that Obama isn't cleaning up your messes now.

Hey....I know how to make us republicans like him and his ratings to soar......let four planes attack our buildings and then start a war somewhere that didn't send the planes to attack us....then say "Mission Accomplished" regardless of how much longer it will take to 'accomplish' anything.

It's always about color isn't it? Once a person makes a negative comment about the president it's always because he's a man of "color" and we don't like him just because of the color of his skin. Need I remind anyone that Obama is 1/2 black and 1/2 white? But the African Americans like to take all the credit. I don't care if Obama is purple, he still sucks as president. We'll see how everyone feels when you have to sale everything you have just to be able to have electricity and gas in your house. He's absurd.

When a Jet is ready for landing, there are a lot of devices involved to bring the plane to stand still to bring it to safety. The Air Brakes are applied, the plane descends, thrust is reduced and plane is brought under control, before it hits the ground. Still the Jet doesn’t stop. The Pilot then applies ground brakes, while controlling the steering, so that the passengers in the plane, along with Pilot and his crew, can safely stop to off board.

Similar is the situation today with the Economy. Former President and Vice President, before Mr. Obama, took America on a joy ride (let it be wars, or economy), and were probably on auto pilot. When the time to fix things came, the dual left the jet and its passengers in jeopardy, jumping out of troubled plane with their "golden parachute".

Now to bring back America's Pride and Economy back on track President Obama and his team is working day in day out to fix the issue, which he inherited from previous administration. Just like the troubled Jet, there will be some turbulence in the beginning, but, I am very sure that President Obama, like a successful Pilot, will bring the America and Americans to safe landing and successful future ahead.

What took 8 years to destroy, will definitely not take 6 months to fix. He said "Yes we can" I am sure "Yes He Can".

I think polls are for fools. This means nothing just as the polls they kept keeping track of President Bush.

But I agree with one point, he cannot keep blaming Bush for the poor economy this is now his ship to pilot.

The bad news for us his ship is called the Titanic and the iceberg he is headed for is Healthcare and Cap&trade.

Looks like all hands will be lost when his ship goes down!

The Republicans are poised, of course, to bring us right out of this economic mess, thank goodness. Just as soon as one of them actually comes us with a credible idea, gosh darn it!

It is TIME to IMPEACH Barack.
He is a terrible president and does not deserve any respect.
He is a terrible representative of the United States of America.
He is Not loyal to this country.
He hates his country the same as his little wife Michelle.
    They are anti american.
Reverend Wright was correct. "Barack is a politician" and although he will lie about it, he believes in the anti american sentiment of that church.
He has more respect for the King Of Saudi Arabia than he does for the founding fathers.
This guy is a disgrace to all americans everywhere.

When 76% of Americans say GIVE ME PUBLIC HEALTH CARE and all of Congress says NO, BIG PHARMA OWNS US, then of course the public will be mad. Ask the same people if they regret voting for Obama and I bet you will see that not many do. Bottom line is, Obama may not have fully saved the country yet, but there was no alternative.

AZPhil, you are DEAD ON. The African American population doesn't care what Obama's policies are so long as he remains black. He could admit to have doing some real sick and vile stuff and they would still defend him. Look at Kwame Kilpatrick in Detroit. Who are the real racists in America people?

Alright: Can we still stop a second and realize the real problem of the country? A financial disaster caused by the reckless 8 years of administration by Cheney and Bush (intentionally in this order).
Haven't you realized – yet – that the members of the Republican Party get into politics for mostly private interests and could not care less about the wellness of the non priviledged? Why are sooo many people talking about the proposed healthcare plan when they have no clue what its content is? Pettiness is really a Republican trademark, together with unsatiable greed.

Busch was truly an embarrassment to the US. He and his administration stold the election and lied as thousands died!

Obama is the right man for the job and is acomplishing great things, considering the disater created by the Bush adminstration.

However, if health isn't fixed and the Employee Free Choice Act pased, we will need to elect a more worker friendly congress.

I love my mother but rather than focusing on issues, she focuses on how much a candidate paid for a haircut, etc. Some of the participants in this chat are the same sort. We need to look at the whole picture, not simply a moment in time. I could spend my time focusing on all of the Republican "family values" candidates who have had affairs but I care more about what affects my family, my community, the country, and the world

For those who focus on only one issue or story, Obama's travels are designed to help in our foreign policy which was deeply damaged by the Bush administrations cowboy ways. It is time we had a statesman in the Presidency. After all, the Presidency of the United States is supposed to mean "Leader of the Free World"

C'mon people, just think a little bit for a moment. You have a president who is been in office less than a year, trying to fix a mess that was created in 8 years, facing the biggest recession in ages; and you listening to the rhetorics of the people who created the mess in the first place...Give the man time to get his job done...Most of you idiots who don't approve of him, voted for Bush twice...
