Poll: Obama approval rating dips under 60 percent

President Obama's approval rating has dropped under 60 percent according to a CNN Poll of Polls released Friday.
President Obama's approval rating has dropped under 60 percent according to a CNN Poll of Polls released Friday.

WASHINGTON (CNN) - An average of five national polls conducted in July indicates that President Barack Obama's approval rating has slipped under 60 percent.

Fifty-seven percent of Americans surveyed approve of the job Obama's doing as president, according to a CNN Poll of Polls compiled and released Friday, with 36 percent disapproving. In early June, Obama's average approval rating was 62 percent. It dropped a point to 61 percent by mid-June and stayed at that level through the rest of the month.

"Recent polls indicate that Obama's lowest ratings - and biggest losses - come on the public's perception of how he is handling the economy," says CNN Polling Director Keating Holland. "And the latest CNN/Opinion Research Corporation poll shows a double-digit drop in the number of Americans who think that the President has a clear plan for solving the country's problems. The public may not be as willing to give Obama the benefit of the doubt after six months on the job as they did when he first took office."

So how does Obama compare to his most recent predecessors six months into office?

George W. Bush also drew a 57 percent approval rating six months into his presidency, in July of 2001. Bill Clinton stood at 48 percent in July 1993. Two-thirds of Americans polled approved of George H.W. Bush's job as president in July 1989, and six out of 10 gave Ronald Reagan the thumbs-up in July 1981.

"Reagan, like Obama, got approval ratings in the high 50s and low 60s during most of his first summer in office," Holland says. "But as unemployment remained high, Reagan's approval rating dropped below 50 percent for the first time in November of 1981, and it stayed under 50 percent for the next two years."

CNN's Poll of Polls consists of five national surveys with interviews conducted in July: The Gallup tracking poll (July 13-15); Ipsos/McClatchy (July 9-13); Diageo/Hotline (July 9-13); USA Today/Gallup (July 10-12) and CBS News (July 9-12). The Poll of Polls does not have a sampling error.

Obama is a hypocrite. On the campaign trail he spoke of how we need to stop spending billions in Iraq, and pay for our problems here in the U.S., yet he supported some World Poverty Act. Yes, WORLD poverty act. Taking U.S. tax dollars to pay for poor people in OTHER countries. He has people, especially the youth in some sort of trance that he's going to fix everything. But in my state if you dare say something bad about dear Obama you're labeled as a racist. He's spending billions and trillions that WE DON'T HAVE. If George Bush or any other republican did that the liberals would be throwing a fit, but since Obama does it's fine because Obama can do no wrong.

I think he should stop pushing his socialistic agenda, and taxing the rich some stupid amount to pay for a bunch of free loaders who do nothing to get money. Most rich people don't get rich from sitting doing nothing. If you want money, work for it.
I wish we could have a Libertarian president. Democrats are pushing socialistic policies like universal health care and excessive tax rates for the rich, and Republicans have their heads stuck in the Bible when it comes to social issues.

@Randolph Carter can you name one thing he has done well. If you can we will all stop writing negative comments about Obama.

    1. Highest deficit of any president in the history of this country.
    2. 9.5% Unemployment
    3. Weakened the defense of our country by closing Club Gitmo and cutting defense budget
    4. Apologizes to all of the other countries for our terrible behavior over the last 100 years.
    5. Passed stimulus bill filled with blatant pork. True Repubs were piggish here as well but he signed and pushed through bill before it could be read.
    6. Healthcare proposal which will further bankrupt us.
7.Spent billions on automotive industry to garner votes for coming elections but in the end had no positive effect.
    8. Trying to push Cap and Con which is going to appease the green people and bankrupt us even more.
    9. I am sorry need to get back to work so I can help pay for all this crazy spending by Barry!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The demographics of the Washington D.C. area are obvious from the postings. For the vast majority, remedial education is highly recommended. But then again, who would expect anything else from the NEGROES?

  6. Who...me?

Come on now! Why am I reading all this hate directed at Bush from the left? The left is supposed to be "open minded" and "inclusive". Why does it seem that the left only grows a spine to attack Republicans? They didn't have a spine to attack the actions of a tyranical government that murdered it's own people (Iran) or to attack the actions of a brutal regime that let it's own people die of starvation and disease (Soviet Union)....... and on and on. From Venezuela to North Korea to Hondures.......the left "doesn't want to meddle". I know........Hugo Chavez (R)......maybe that will do it! Get real with your HATE libs......your thought pattern is about as deep as the kiddy pool.

  7. Politics Suck

That's the problem with this country, we like everything fast; fast food, fast cars, fast women, fast service, fast pain relief and now fast recession relief. The recession did not happen overnight, the warning signs were years in the making, I didn't expect the president to fix this overnight, this month or even this year. People looking for a quick fix to this mess should have signed a petition years ago to impeach the last administration for bankrupting the country and getting us into a war that should have never had started.

Seriously people? You should be absolutely ashamed!! I love how people came together as a union when the twin towers and pentagon were attacked – now we're blaming BUSH for doing that? Are you serious!?!?!? This man voted no to war on people who attacked us? Do you really think we're safe? He cares nothing about you and I – he just cares about staying in office so he can take over the U.S. for good. If you want the government to start running your life and all the decisions that you freely get to make, then MOVE TO FRANCE! The entire point of the Revolutionary War was to get away from the rulings of England. Now we're going back to what we fought against – A LEFT-WING SOCIALIST!

It's also very hilarious that you people think the new health tax on the wealthy is just for them. Well guess what folks, it's not! If you live in NYC, your new tax rate is 60%. FOR EVERYONE, POOR OR RICH!Good luck having a dream or going to college or even buying a house or car because you won't have the money to do it. If NYC's tax rate is going up to 60%, then guess what follows....the same for everybody else. And everyone who voted for good ole' Barack Obama, "who will take care of my mortgage or every other important decision in my life," will get a taste of their medicine. I'm proud to report that I didn't vote for him because his policies are terrible, he has no pride for the Constitution of the United States of America, and the man can't go live on air without a teliprompter!

One more comment I want to leave you with:

If you're reading this, thank a teacher. If you're reading this in ENGLISH, thank a MARINE!

Never forget Pearl Harbor or 9/11.

I love how all the haters rewrite history in order to suit their arguments. Vicki, for example: Obama has not created the largest deficit in this nation's history. That would have been GW Bush, whose tax cuts to the rich and an ill-advised war turned Clinton-era surpluses into the largest deficit in real dollars in US history, and the fastest growing deficit since WWII.

Reagan (1981-1989)'s tax cuts and military spending generated the biggest peace-time increase in the national debt. The lesson from the modern era, then, is that if you want to reduce the deficit, don't elect a Republican!

IMO, we worry about getting out of the recession first. That requires spending - basic macroeconomics and macroeconomic history tell us that. Once we get out of the recession, we hold Obama's and Congress' feet to the fire to reduce the deficit. And this can't happen without *meaningful* health care reform, not what the politicians in bed with Big Pharma and Big Insurance are pushing.

THE OBAMA RECEIPE FOR A FAILED AMERICA

-Make friends with dictators and deny oppressed peoples seeking their own freedom

    -Quadruple the deficit

-Cut missile defense while rogue nations ramp up their missile and nuclear capabilities

-Close the place where we hold jihadist without any plan on what to do with them.

-Take over enough major industries to make his dictator buddy Hugo jealous

    -Governemnt health care burden

-Taxpayer stimulus money to pay his political supporters with projects that have no benefit to taxpayers and do not create jobs

    -Talk down America while overseas

-TAX TAX TAX the small businessman, the impetus for new American jobs. This is will create layoffs, not new jobs!!!

Combine all ingredients and pour over brown rice, because rice is what we all may be eating very, very soon....exported directly from our new leaders from China!

REVOLT NOW, BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE. CALL YOUR CONGRESSMEN AND SENATORS!!!!

HAHA. Some of you Retardlicans are hilarious. You were blaming Obama for all of Bush and GOP's mess the day after he was inaugurated. If you wanted any credibility today, you should have kept your mouth shut back then. But you chose to blame the black guy and now you look dumb. Even if Obama wanted to seriously do some major damage to this country that would make Bush look like Clinton, it would take at least until next year for any of his "Socialist Communism" (Whatever the hell that means) to effect anything. Read a book you ditto heads. Turn off the Fox Joke Channel.

Why compare bush and obama? One couldn't speak in complete sentences, the other can. Other than that... they are the same. Obama is Bush #3.

Please refer to all bush's toxic policies obama is continuing. Wake up! Both parties are different sides of the same coin... the operative being: COIN.

    Enjoy your weekend.

What, after all he did to save UAW health care benefits. Wait until he screws the rest of the country like he did all non-UAW workers. You think he sucks now, wait as his solution is to cater to those whom will help him later and screw the rest. I be worried if I were you as you might be in his next group of selective screwing.
Imagined his idea on fixing medicare might mean that future retirees might not quailify for it while your neighbor will. I mean I can see companies doing selective bankrupty. Lets say your company moves, it goes to court to get relieved of paying any medical bill from old plant retirees while still paying medical bills in states where they still have plants, but you're left out cause your plant doesn't exsist any more and he backs their idea in court.
If you thought George W Bush was bad like I did, this guy going to make him look like a saint. BEWARE as you might be next and according to him it's your fault and you must endure pain so your co-workers can reap the rewards.

Carter enjoyed high marks initially also. We all know how well that turned out. It took 28 years before the oval office sought economic advice from Carter. Unfortunately, its 1977 all over again...

    >speech he gave last night at the NAACP centennial
    >was the most powerful one I've heard yet.

Talk is cheap. (taxes to pay for liberal spending isn't)
