Carol Fowler, Chair of the South Carolina Democratic Party, issued the following statement about the Gov. Mark Sanford's Op-ed:

"Mark Sanford's vague apology in Sunday's papers is fine as far as it goes, but he doesn't say what he's apologizing for. Turning his back on the people of SC? Abandoning his family? Dumping his responsibilities for weeks? Or 6 1/2 years of ignoring our public schools and the children in them? When my children were small and had to say they were sorry I always made them specify what the apology was for, to be sure they knew. Does Governor Sanford know?"

Hey Mark. You being a southern christian rebublican im sure you own plenty of guns to make you feel better about your tiny manhood. Take one of those guns, drive up to THE REAL App. Trail and blow your stupid brains out! That would be the honorable thing to do you disgusting excuse for a man!

E   July 19th, 2009 9:47 pm ET

FIrst of all, God has better things to do than worry about this guy and turning him into a decent human being. It is appalling that he blames anyone or puts the responsibility of him acting like a moral non-hypocrit onto anyone or anything other than himself.
God is not at fault, nor will (s)he fix it, he should resign, not because of the affair, but for all the reasons that he said that Clinton should have resigned.
PS If there is one thing Republicans can NOT claim, it is family values/morals, these days they are breaking all their own rules, and holding noone accountable for their own actions. What a sad state of affairs for a party claiming that morality and personal responsibility are the most important things in the world...

kieran   July 19th, 2009 9:39 pm ET

Re: South Carolina schools being last. It seems that the national Republican mantra of 'no money for public schools', makes sense now.

Keep them ignorant so that they'll vote Republican.

Amanda   July 19th, 2009 9:39 pm ET

Sanford stinks ! Period.

Jimmy Ross   July 19th, 2009 9:34 pm ET

I am a Democrat, and I believe that Sanford has sinned as all of us do in one way or another. It may seem easy for some to carry a self righteous banner at this time, but my words would be: be careful. Our prayers should be for the family....forgiveness, healing, trust restored, etc.

As far as Sanford's efforts to hold on to his governor's seat, I believe he should resign to truly invest that time in rebuilding his family.

Annie, Atlanta   July 19th, 2009 9:25 pm ET

Chris W. – are you for real? This is a joke, right? You do know that the planes will take off and the flight attendants will be working, whether Sanford is on or not, heading off to cheat on his wife and tear apart his family, right? And you do realize he left his job thereby leaving the good people of SC in a lurch, for 5 days, originally planning on 10!!!? If you're not joking please get a grip, and take that mascara off!

Alton Simmonds   July 19th, 2009 9:24 pm ET

While the govornor is still trying to apologizes for his wrong doing of having an affair, the state of South Carolina needs leadership that the people can trust. The Lt. Gov need to step up and start mending the fence because the economy and the education system of S.C. needs some serious attention. Gov. Sanford should be ashamed of himself and quit apologizing to the people and do something about repairing his credability of family values with his wife and children. Let the Lt. Gov run the show for a while. Now he can take a page from President Clinton and learn a lesson from President Obama.

Larry   July 19th, 2009 9:23 pm ET

A very typical Republican apology ...

Only spoken to try to save his job ...

The Party Of NO ... real remorse regarding anything

Buddy Gilmour   July 19th, 2009 9:22 pm ET

Sanford needs to check himself into some type of rehab, take a temporary leave of absence, and go into seclusion, he's a complete mess. Does he have any advisors? Can't someone tell him to keep a low profile? His goal now is to finish his term with some shred of decency and dignity, because he's finished in politics, in fact its hard to imagine him being able to find work after the way he's carried on. Its embarrassing!

chicago4obama   July 19th, 2009 8:48 pm ET

Maybe this wonderful father was apologizing to his son's, for being out of the country with his mistress on Father's Day.

Carl Justus   July 19th, 2009 8:48 pm ET

If those in the state legislature had any backbone or sense they would impeach Sanford, but not remove him from office for we have a Lt. governor that is worthless. He is a undisciplined teenager in a grown man's body. He was clocked going 101 miles an hour down Interstate 26 to Columbia and the officer would not give him a ticket and the man in charge of the state highway patrol did not make the officer issue a ticket. Both the officer and the man in charge of the state highway patrol should be fired for dereliction of duty.

The Lt. governor is incapable of governing the state, he is incapable of upholding the laws of the state. The governor of South Carolina does not have any power anyway, the legislature has kept all the power they delegate to commissions that do nothing but spend the our taxpayers money and they and the republican papers grumble about how the federal tax dollars are wasted, but the federal government can not hold a candle to South Carolina.

Mark Leach   July 19th, 2009 8:35 pm ET

I live in South Carolina and have always been appalled at many of the politicians elected here, including Sanford. Please understand the gullibility of the massive number of uneducated in this area who actually believe what people like Sanford tell them, but he does not represent the entire state. The problem now is, however, that if Sanford resigns, Andre Bauer, one of the biggest but most serious hypocritical jokes in American politics, will become governor. Talk about being caught between the devil and the deep blue sea . . .

James   July 19th, 2009 8:31 pm ET

SINFORD is more appropriate than SANFORD

Buzz Daly   July 19th, 2009 8:29 pm ET

Several things, Gov.

Please don't try to include me in your silly ideas of Godfigures somehow being real, especially as it concerns my personal behavior being the business of an entity that exists only in your mind.

I will no more have to answer to anyone's diaphanous deity than I would the Ice Cream Man.

Please grow up.

You're an embarrassment.

If "God" really cared, he/she would have put sand in the Vaseline, and not made you wait for your beatdown until the "end".

If anyone could use a good smiting from their Imaginary Friend, it is you.

Get it yet?

Dieter   July 19th, 2009 8:28 pm ET

God must be getting sick of being dragged into these Republican fiascos. Any time a Republican gets caught cheating on his wife, tapping his feet in the men's room or coming on to congressional pages, they invoke God.

brainless liberals all around   July 19th, 2009 7:56 pm ET

notice how many people here actually think this article is relevant.

Any liberals ever think to question why CNN ONLY reports news on republicans?

And the liberals just line up to follow the lead from CNN, without questioning their motive.

Seriously, watch the coverage by CNN. It's ONLY negative news about the GOP. If there isn't any, they make something up. For example, recently CNN paparazzi went to Alaska to interview Johnston to get dirt on Palin. He took the bait, made about $500, and gave his opinion. Then, CNN brainless sheep follow along and blog more criticism of Palin – right on que.

Hey liberals, QUESTION AUTHORITY!

Ken in NC   July 19th, 2009 7:56 pm ET

The truth be known, Gov. Sanford doesn't really think he owes an apology to the people of SC.

bella   July 19th, 2009 7:50 pm ET

Mark Sanford is NO DIFFERENT that ANY "womanizer" who crossed the line! In my opinion, he has a "sexual addiction", just like any other man who cannot keep himself from cheating! So, even if he is "so sorry", and even if he were to get professional counselling for this problem, I would suggest that he will be a "repeat offender", and it won't be long before we will hear the same thing has happened AGAIN!! And on some level, the woman in Argentina KNEW BETTER, but also chose to allow this affair to progress! Just like Adam and Eve in the garden - "the forbidden fruit" was eaten, and the rest is history for every Christian believer! We are ALL SINNERS who can only be saved by God's Amazing Grace!!

obama polls slipping   July 19th, 2009 7:49 pm ET

clearly obama's polls are slipping. CNN is adding more smoke to obama's crap!

obama is screwing up America and CNN wants us to focus on Sanford.

Why not focus on the multiple lawsuits challenging obama's US citizenship.
How about the fact that 16 states now have unemployment at >10%?
How about CA issuing IOU's and shutting down the government?
How about the biased reporting by the lamestream media?
How about the fact that Fox News holds 10 of the TOP 10 cable news programs in prime news coverage?
How about an update on Spitzer and his lost gay love affair?
How about the fact that more Americans call themselves conservative than in many recent years?
How about the fact that there are NO negative news pieces about dems in CNN, EVER?

Need I continue.

obama screws up America and CNN does all they can to hide the facts!

Don   July 19th, 2009 7:49 pm ET

Good for Carol. Some of us here in SC never voted for this man. He has done nothing for this state, and now he has shamed us all. As for his supporters who keep bringing up democrats and Bill Clinton to defend his actions..Democrats never run on a christian " I am better than you" platform. Sanford is a hypocrite and his apology is not accepted by this resident of South Carolina.

Liberal4Obama   July 19th, 2009 7:49 pm ET

In Mark Sanfords life his argentinian mistress comes first, everything else does not matter at all

gingerpeachy   July 19th, 2009 7:43 pm ET

It's time for you Democrats to stand some ground; he should be forced to resign...thar is what the people of SC really deserve. Then Sanfoprd can back his bags and head to Argentina now rather than later because there's no doubt that's where he really wants to be.
Sorry Mrs. Sanford you are deluding yourself!

ja   July 19th, 2009 7:41 pm ET

it is high noon and time for Sanford to step aside, the arrogance, to many Americans have the mentality do as I say not as I do, any other state employee would be terminated, is he above reproach, man step aside

Liz   July 19th, 2009 7:40 pm ET

What got me was he left his family on Father's Day.............

RUTY   July 19th, 2009 7:39 pm ET

This man has betrayed his family, his state, his job and especially his wife. Think about this people–he even cheated on his mistress. What a pile of crap. Throw the BUM out –the quicker the better.

xavier   July 19th, 2009 7:37 pm ET

Republicans used to love this guy? I think the GOP needs a complete and absolute moral overhaul, especially after hearing about that cult on C street that so many of them belong to.

steve   July 19th, 2009 7:34 pm ET

The main stream media was the biggest cheerleader for the war in Iraq because of the profit-driven culture.
Now the same media is brow-bitten the health care debate for a failure.
The American people continue to loose in the process.
American people should open their eyes and support the president in his effort to reform the health care. it is broken and need to be fixed.

gl, Pittsburgh   July 19th, 2009 7:29 pm ET

Repugs are so concerned about the "empathy" of Sotomayor, who has led a very circumspect life. And yet they ask us to "empathize" with and forgive a man whio tosses aside his duties to fly to argentina for "love", while married to another woman. By their own standards, we must reject Mark Standfard and require justice and not mercy, which requires him to step down. Repugs demand empathy just fine when it suits THEM apparently.

You hit it right on the nose. Republicans talked about Empathy like is was a bad word. HYPOCRITES!

Carole   July 19th, 2009 7:27 pm ET

Buy the book "The Family" that is out about C STREET.

C STREET, which Sanford is a member of, believes that he and his fellow C STREET brothers like Senator Ensign and Chip Pickering are entittled to commit adultery and not worry about little poor people.

I agree, the state of SC has to be ashamed of this clown.

sean   July 19th, 2009 7:11 pm ET

As a South Carolina resident, I find it appalling that the Democrats have done nothing themselves to help fix the situation of our schools (especially since the superintendent of education is a Democrat), and take advantage of his affair by playing politics and furthering their socialist agenda which has no merit in a very red state. Democrats are very outnumbered here and their policies lack traction and direction, and as usual they rather play politics then help the people of South Carolina themselves.

Georgia   July 19th, 2009 7:03 pm ET

Sanford needs to do the same as he suggested with Clinton when he was parading his moral superiority – QUIT!!!

Tom   July 19th, 2009 7:02 pm ET

Sanford is a whining, sniveling ,lying, hypocrite .He is as disingenuous as is possible.I think he should get two big rocks ,one in each hand and smash his own head. It would be alot more entertaining to observe.

Annie, Atlanta   July 19th, 2009 7:00 pm ET

Bill Sampson – I love your comment!

emmie   July 19th, 2009 6:45 pm ET

So is this comment C-Street's approved news release from Sanford this week? Why is Sanford claiming moral 'Christian' superiority as a policy platform while he is an active member of the C-Street cult?

Norfolk, VA   July 19th, 2009 6:40 pm ET

To Ken in Gainesville: The school system in SC is no worse than most southern schools. The blame starts at home. Though our tax dollars do go to the education system, we (parents) must take the blunt of some of the blame. My two sisters and I grew up in SC and graduated from schools in SC. We all have degrees and very good paying jobs. One of my sisters is working on her second master's. I will retire from the military in a few years as a senior enlisted. Another one of my sisters holds a leadership position with (not in) the NC correctional system. My mother made sure that we received a good education in and out of the SC school systems. So while we would like to blame the governor and other politicians, we should first look in the mirror. What are you doing to make the school systems better for your granddaughter?

As for Gov. Sanford, he has to answer to a higher power. We have all done things of which we should be ashamed. The only difference is that we are not in the public light. I will not be his judge and jury. I really just want to get back to the business at hand and work on making the SC school system better for our children.

joy   July 19th, 2009 6:39 pm ET

Something is not right with this guy Mark Sanford. Maybe he have bipolar or u can say tripolar I don't know, but all I know is that he should resign. Let somebody else take over. U see that is hard because they think the Lt govern is gay. The Republican will never let the Lt govern take over, u know how the Republicans are anti- gay, if u know what I mean.

Sue   July 19th, 2009 6:33 pm ET

To Mark Sanford I say:

I am sick and tired of your apologies regarding your affair. Quit wasting our precious time and get on to your elected responsibilities and do something about our employment – or lack thereof – here in South Carolina.

After 8 months of being out of work – my husband has put an ad on Craigslist that he would work FREE for a month – just to get his foot in the door someplace – to no avail. In my eyes, this is very sad for a man who is an honest hard worker, who is a college graduate with years of experience, to come to this point. What are you doing to try to help us? The people of South Carolina could care less about your "soul mate" and/or your reconcilliation with your wife – we are concerned about feeding our families and keeping a roof over our heads. Either start doing your job or get out!

Mario, mtl, ca.   July 19th, 2009 6:32 pm ET

Please doctor don't look at his feet,,,,,,

yuri   July 19th, 2009 6:23 pm ET

Sanford ain't gonna win more hearts by repeatedly apologizin' for his salacious saga in Argentina. This scumbag is a hypocrite who gunned for Clinton's blood during the latter's impeachment trial.

Pony   July 19th, 2009 6:18 pm ET

somebody really needs to tell this guy to stop giving press conferences.

Andy   July 19th, 2009 6:17 pm ET

Basically, between the lines, Sanford has admitted that his perverted addiction to nasty, ungodly behavior and sexual perversion has caused him to disregard the welfare of citizens of the state including the uninsured and unemployed, as well as his own kids and wife. He needs professional help with his uncontrollable habits and then should quit.

Mike b   July 19th, 2009 6:09 pm ET

The people of South Carolina should be ashamed of themselves for continually voting this clown in office, he has done nothing to improve the state.

Bill Sampson   July 19th, 2009 6:06 pm ET

He's talking about God, again. Watch out. Something is up (no pun intended).

Marchant   July 19th, 2009 6:03 pm ET

Falling in love with a soul mate is fine with me. But he has responsibilities of the state, family and the governing party affiliation. He can't just ranaway without informing to the state is a grave mistake...there is no excuse for that. He has to step down and marry his soul mate and lead a happy life...sometimes we have to take a different path to have true happiness. ..but not at the cost of draining the state in many ways...please step down immediately, then the state can recover with a strong trusted leader. Mark mSanford is not a strong leader to cling to his power.

enlighteningup   July 19th, 2009 5:58 pm ET

has this guy had a psych exam yet? every time he opens his mouth, he makes it worse for the state, his wife and children, and the future women who will one day meet his sons.

Lynda/Minnesota   July 19th, 2009 5:57 pm ET

@Fair is Fair
Contrary to what you may believe, I use one nom de plume – and that would be "Fair is Fair".

ephraim   July 19th, 2009 5:54 pm ET

also, the op-ed shows further an extraordinary lack of healthy boundaries, which is common in narcissists. he is speaking in the royal "me" to the global we of people of the state of s.c. and the entire country, and in ways that are instantly intimate and creepy. i think in the end its always the hypocrisy that grosses people out. the republicans really need to
get him to stop, its scary

Rosebud   July 19th, 2009 5:44 pm ET

I have to admit that Sanford for the first time in his life, is in love. Some politicians get married to women, sometimes, who are financially connected, or these women are very smart, and they are, in my opinion, used by these men to get ahead. They start families, because this is the political thing to do, I don't believe being in love with the women ever enters the picture, until they meet someone who really shows them a different perspective on life and how it can be enjoyed. Then the realization sets in that they have spent a lot of time in marriages that are not fulfilling. This poor man is in the throws of a nervous breakdown, and he will never be the same again, no matter how many vacations he and his wife have, together.

Chris W   July 19th, 2009 5:43 pm ET

I'm not sure what Mark Sanford has apologized for but he really wanted to write us all a hand written note or to call in person for whatever it was and that, I love. He realizes this is GOD'S Big Plan too. I think the Lord has forced Mark to realize, we the people's NEED of being lied to and patronized, is his actual "soul mate". He is a wonderful Southern politician and my Tammy Fay mascara is running down my face as I cry writing this, thinking about how all you homosexual liberals are using his trials from Jesus to destroy our REAL America by actually trying to investigate if he used taxpayer money to take flights. Despite the fact that taking flights creates jobs for American stewardists, who could also be part of God's plan for Mark to bed. This is the kind of stimulus we all deserve.

William   July 19th, 2009 5:40 pm ET

I've known Mark Sandford for years - ever since he was a Congressman and both Fritz Hollings and Strom Thurmond had to occasionally spank him for putting his political ambitions before the needs of the People of S.C. He's not the brightest guy in the world. But I assumed he was smart enough to understand that his political career is over. He needs to step down and "go into rehab" like a good little Republican.

renea   July 19th, 2009 5:39 pm ET

Their is nothing wrong with him apoligizing as long as he mean. At least he did admitted it. But now what are you going to do Mark sanford?

Franky, Land of Lincoln   July 19th, 2009 5:35 pm ET

Boy, he's calling him out! LOL!!! :)

But for real, he should slow it down. Is news no matter what, just work and don't even talk about it but it also doesn't help when his peeps leave him out.

Lara   July 19th, 2009 5:35 pm ET

Exactly what WAS Sanford apologizing for? Going AWOL using state funds? Dereliction of duty? Repeatedly lying to the state and his family? Grandstanding against stimulus funds to further his own political aspirations – but at the expense of 7000 teachers jobs and many thousands of state workers' jobs? Ensuring that SC comes in last in the nation in education every year he was in office? Ignoring the corridor of shame?

AncientRiver, New Mexico   July 19th, 2009 5:29 pm ET

GI Joe   July 19th, 2009 5:28 pm ET

If he tells the truth, he'll say he's sorry he got caught

Ask his fellow political cohorts at C-Street -- Ensign from Nevada, the guy from Oklahoma, etc.

Ernesto   July 19th, 2009 5:26 pm ET

I think Sanford should have to admit his "sins of office" rather than deal with his cheating on his wife. I'd like to know if he was on vacation on the taxpayer dime and if he is simply incompetant about disappearing into thin air. I doubt any corporation would put up with this absence or misuse of company funds.

His avoiding talking about what he is sorry for is basically dishonest. I agree with Carol Fowler.

Ken in Gainesville   July 19th, 2009 5:26 pm ET

The chairman is correct. The school system in South Carolina is a laughing stock. I could not imagine how bad it was until I started hearing about performance levels. I have rarely been to a place where ignorance was so celebrated by the common person. "Don't want no college perfessors teaching us about science and history!" I have granddaughter living in Myrtle Beach, and I can't bear to think how far she is behind in her education. No wonder SC can't compete for jobs with high-tech industries. Too bad the gov is so worried about taking the feds money (and duping the people). Maybe if he learned some critical thinking along the way he would not be in the mess he is. I know some good people in SC, but the vast majority need to get a grip, study, and stop whining about the federal/foreign boogeymen.

dave   July 19th, 2009 5:26 pm ET

But Sanford wrote that he has been "humbled and broken as never before," and has "given up areas of control."

we do not need any humbled and broken governors

dave   July 19th, 2009 5:21 pm ET

shouldn't larry craig and mark foley be defending this guy?

DawnL,CA   July 19th, 2009 5:13 pm ET

Ms. Fowler- he is only sorry he got caught. Please do the right thing & get rid of this loser.

Denna   July 19th, 2009 5:08 pm ET

Please. He is hoping that his "I'm Sorry's will somehow make this all go away. What a child this man is. Congratualtions S.C. for voting for this nut. But what the heck, he's a Republican and I'm sure that is all that really mattered.

Susan (Michigan)   July 19th, 2009 4:57 pm ET

I know. He's sorry he got caught!
