Close to a month after holding a press conference and publicly admitting to having an extra-marital affair, South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford penned an Op-ed published Sunday where he apologized again.

(CNN) – Embattled South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford tried a new tack Sunday to win forgiveness after admitting to an affair and being incommunicado while he left the state for several days.

A self-described "more contrite" Sanford wrote an op-ed, published in newspapers around South Carolina, vowing to "begin the journey of trying to get things more right with you and others."

Sanford had previously tried a news conference and several interviews which stirred more controversy over his admitted extramarital relationship with an Argentinian woman whom he called his "soul mate."

"I realize this op-ed does not do justice to the process of saying I am sorry," the two-term Republican wrote. "A handwritten note or a phone call would ultimately be more appropriate."

Sanford again admitted, "I did wrong and failed at the largest of levels." He said "life is... about way more than public standing or political views, it is about recognizing that none of us of are the arbiters of truth, that there are moral absolutes and that there is a God to whom we will all report for our actions.

"My failure has been more glaring on this front, where no public apology can make wrong right."

But Sanford wrote that he has been "humbled and broken as never before," and has "given up areas of control."

"It is my belief this will make me a better father, husband, friend and advocate."

Sanford, a strong-willed political figure who often sparred with legislative leaders, said that he is "committing to you and to the larger family of South Carolinians to use this experience to both trust God in his larger work of changing me, and from my end, to work to becoming a better and more effective leader."

Trying to heal political wounds deepened by the scandal, Sanford said, "I think all that has transpired will be particularly relevant in the way I deal with the legislative body and other state leaders going forward… as I begin these steps into the last 18 months of this administration, it will be indeed with a more contrite and humble spirit."

Sanford has taken trips with his wife Jenny and children trying to heal the wounds at home, including one this weekend. His family was not specifically mentioned in the op-ed, except for the one reference to being a father and husband.

In an interview with the Associated Press at the end of June, Sanford said he had previously "crossed the lines" with other women, though not "the ultimate line."

I would have more respect for him if he followed his heart and soul. The desire to keep power is not noble. And I don't think he loves is wife. You can be a perfectly good father and not remain in the unhappy marriage.

Chris   July 19th, 2009 5:08 pm ET

I am so tired of these sanctimonious Republican hypocrites, who spout one thing about other people's lives when they want votes, then act all contrite and humble when they're caught spending taxpayers' money on their adulterous trysts. Enough already. Just RESIGN. And take the whole party with you, while you're at it.

Donkey Party   July 19th, 2009 5:05 pm ET

Overlooked in all of this is the fact that SC now has the opportunity to mobilze and prove to the country that they're not sterotypical Southern bumpkins by taking a stand against Sanford. But alas, not a peep...

To Ken @12:53...

Can't think fast enough for a nationally known politician, but here in Washington State, in the US House of Representatives, is Dave Reichert (District 8). Very good man indeed!

tess   July 19th, 2009 4:59 pm ET

a truely sorry husband and father would remove himself from public view, try to make his amends to his family and spend his time left being a humble, private citizen. however, i will say that if he had been my husband he would be out on the street begging to see his family! those boys did not deserve to be treated like this and his wife should be sure that they know it – and the way is to kick the bum to the curb and make him responsible for his sleezy behavior – now that is a lesson he could teach his boys. and this comes from a true-blue, dyed in the wool, life long republican!!!

P. D.   July 19th, 2009 4:59 pm ET

How dare he mention God. This is a man who hounded Clinton for his affair and INSISTED he step down. Now Sanford not only had an affair, he abandoned the state for days on end while he spent time with his mistress. Unreal. He should step down immediately. I have had it with these so-called pious Republicans.

Denna   July 19th, 2009 4:55 pm ET

Mark, if by some miracle you survive this, try to be more humble the next time someone from the Democratic party stumbles. I believe you have finally learned, first hand, how Clinton felt when loud-mouth 'moralists' like you pilloried him. You were not free to skip out for a tryst on a whim. You run a state you idiot and you left it without putting any safeguards in place. How irresponsible. I can't image why either Jenny or Maria would want such a self-absorbed man. If Maria is your soulmate, then go, be with her in Argentina. If not, you made a fool of yourself for not reason.

Donkey Party   July 19th, 2009 4:54 pm ET

Based on comments from Palin, Ensign, Sanford, and a vast majority of right-wingers, they believe God is a Republican. I take great comfort in KNOWING that on judgement day, all these blasphemous, treasonous wretches will be doomed to burn in Hell for eternity. Their sins against humanity will not go unpunished. Until that time, we must uphold our responsibility in keeping them out of elected office. If you fear GOD, and not the GOP, then help safeguard civilization by never voting RepubliCON again.

Chris W   July 19th, 2009 4:54 pm ET

Tulsa Joe, you write:
"Peter… I'm right with you. So long as homosexuals get equal rights, I think the gov should be have the freedom to destroy his family in whatever way he chooses."
What in the hell are you two inbreeds going on about anyway?!?!
Mark Sanford CAN "destroy his family in whatever way he chooses" as long as it's LEGAL. Which discludes leaving the state without telling where he's going when governor and using taxpayers dime to conduct an overseas affair. What this has to do with gay rites could only makes sense in your screwed mind. And I love how all the sudden this had become God's will with Sanford and some of these commenters who are just lap it all up and are now so holy that they bestow blessings all around like maniacs when ever someone wants a hallellujah for breaking the law. Put him and jail so he can really write us all "hand written notes" individually.

Al   July 19th, 2009 4:54 pm ET

his vows just aren't worth that much, are they?

Jennifer   July 19th, 2009 4:51 pm ET

He had told his wife that he was going away to write a speech when he went to Argentina to do his mistress. I wonder if this was the speech he was writing. That guy, always thinking ahead.

"And if it was one of us "regular citizens" and we did this in a job, how long do you think it would take before we were escorted to the door? "

Are you kidding? Seriously, do you think your employer cares or has any business sticking their noses into your personal problems? I think your employer would care what you do in your private life.

However, the point is well taken that Sanford's personal weakness interfered with his job performance. That's the reason he should suffer whatever consequences the voters in his state determine is appropriate. He really needs to just shut up now and either step down or do his job.

the southern progressive   July 19th, 2009 4:44 pm ET

i would take this guys vows and commitments with a grain of salt considering how he treated the vow of marriage with his wife. he disrepected her and his family, destroying the sanctity of marraige all the while spouting "family values" from the rooftops (of c-street). and now his use of being judged by God should supplement any decision, opinion and judgement of the people who elected him is showing disrepect to not only his constituents but also God. he obviously thinks little of either as represented by his actions in adulty and using tax payer dollars to help pay to make his adultry happen.
he should resign now before he does more damage to his family ,his state and his religions (religious hypocirsy drives more people away from God and religion that its brings people to)

he is a disgrace to the sanctity of marriage.

Ted   July 19th, 2009 4:42 pm ET

If the politicians and citizens in SC allow this man to stay in office, then they should annul the impeachment of President Bill Clinton. The hypocrisy of Sanford and the GOP is galling. Sanford and Newt and the rest of the hypocrites were yelling for blood over Clinton's peccadillos, but when they get in an extramarital jam, they cry and wail and ask for forgiveness. They are jerks. Sanford should be impeached and waterboarded for good measure. Jerk. Great father role model. Jerk. Forgot what your wedding vows meant, huh. Jerk.

Mariann Pepitone   July 19th, 2009 4:41 pm ET

Jose: How many married men or woman do you know that cheat? Just because he is a governor doesn't make him different than the average person. And how many woman cheat? The people that are making comments act like they never hear of this before. As long as he learned his lesson its better to keep a marriage than divorce one. And I don't give credit to that woman. She should have said no.

Paul Bender   July 19th, 2009 4:38 pm ET

This is all irrelevant. Everywhere that I have worked, a person is fired after a no call no show. It is deemed job abandonment. The Lt. Governor should replace the former governor and it should be done and over with. Politicians should be held to the same standard as each of us.

carlos   July 19th, 2009 4:37 pm ET

why is it that all of these backward regresives mention on this blog the names of others......this matter is only sanford's and him alone......stop trying to make excuses for this sinner and hypocrite.....he should go back and check for HIV.......

Mariann Pepitone   July 19th, 2009 4:31 pm ET

Mike: You are so right about Ted Kennedy. He let that girl die because she was pregnant. Sanford didn't kill this woman. Yes, he did make a mistake but how many men are doing the same thing everyday but we don't hear about it because they are not in the limelight. He should not step down but continue until his term ends. IF he runs his state well that's all that matters. He can heal his personal life and go on.

joel palmer   July 19th, 2009 4:31 pm ET

Mariann Pepitone   July 19th, 2009 4:21 pm ET

Darth Vadik: Who cares if he cheats. It goes on all the time in many work places. If he is a good governor he should stay on. He finally realized his mistake and now this could make him a better husband. Spitzer's wife did not divorce him and their marriage working out fine.

Clare   July 19th, 2009 4:19 pm ET

How can she a self respecting woman stay with a man like that? It isn't easy but I can tell you this: A marriage and a family unit is worth something. She took vows too and to be true to those you have to be willing to live through the "for worse" part of the marriage years. If he is sincere in his desire to save the marriage and his own self respect, then this is the right thing to do.

People treat marriage like a disposable plate. It is way more than that. Vows made to each other have meaning. And if you don't mean it, don't bother getting married.

She is right, his political future means nothing. His place in his family means everything. I wish more men and women would take their vows seriously. I am a democrat and an agnostic and I get the importance of family and marriage. It is a deep and profound thing and very important to the health of society and our country.

Camphoneguy   July 19th, 2009 4:15 pm ET

There was a guy who said it was wrong to shoot and kill people. He then shot and killed four people. He was a hypocrite, for sure, but that doesn't mean shooting and killing people is not morally wrong. Whatever Sanford has said about marriage does NOT change the importance of marriage because he violated the vows he took. If anything, it shows all the more the importance of those vows as almost everyone here (rightfully so) has blasted him for his 'sins'!
I don't see his wife 'standing by her man'. She took time out with friends right afterward. She didn't appear with him at his press conference. She has said his political future is his problem to deal with, not her problem. I think her response has shown the anger that should be there balanced with the care his has for her children.
Clinton stated in office after LYING about his affair. Teddy after he should have been charged with manslaugher, etc, etc. Maybe Sanford should have lied or killed his wife? Wow, some comments are sooo out of touch!

AL   July 19th, 2009 4:15 pm ET

Without forgiveness there is no future. No future for countries and no future for any of our relationships.

So, I say let us all practice forgiveness. We never know when we may need it ourselves.

Peter   July 19th, 2009 4:14 pm ET

Hey Sanford, you are a hypocrite and a liar. You deserted your state and family to take care of your self first. So much for " Country First ". Resign Now!!!

Marchant   July 19th, 2009 4:13 pm ET

Brave Sara Palin is leaving her post to take care of her family and save the state....then why Sanford is crying, begging and taking God's name to cling to the post...?. It is disgraceful act as a man in republican party show such a coward and hypocritic act.. I expect him to step down immediately.

Ellie   July 19th, 2009 4:12 pm ET

He will never ever be happy with his wife. He needs to go to Argentina to be with his soul mate.He just might say the hell with everything and do it!

Kitty Parker   July 19th, 2009 4:12 pm ET

If the Governor was truly sorry and had his priorities straight, he would resign and remove his family from the media glare and try to repair the damage as best he can. He has children who do not need to see their father's dirty linen across every newspaper page, TV program, blog etc. However, it looks like this is more about trying to salvage his soiled political image rather than anything else.

Steve from WI   July 19th, 2009 4:11 pm ET

I wish I lived in SC, so I could look forward to a handwritten note or phone call in the next few weeks. I haven't had such laughs at a hapless dork since The Forty-Year-Old Virgin.

Mariann Pepitone   July 19th, 2009 4:11 pm ET

What difference does it make if he cheated or the next door neighbor cheated. Cheating is cheating. I think he should stay his term. It appears that he was very smitten with this woman and would have continued if his wife didn't find out. However, if he is a good governor and runs the state accordingly then he should stay on. His cheating has nothing to do with his job. If he is a good governor he should get elected again. There are governor's that didn't cheat but can't run the state. And that's more important.

CTG   July 19th, 2009 4:10 pm ET

Didn't he use a lot of taxpayer money to jet off to Argentina while he was carrying on this affair? In any case this whole mess indicates a serious lack of integrity, and I don't see how anyone can effectively govern after destroying their credibility like this. No one should be persuaded by anything he says about humility and trusting in God. The larger family of South Carolinians? Give me a break. This is just an obscene gesture from a parasite trying desperately to cling to power.

Sarah   July 19th, 2009 4:10 pm ET

His poor wife: not only does he cheat on her, he calls another woman his soul mate on national television and spends the next month mixing all of his apologizes with unnecessary details about his personal life.

He is delusional. He has given enough explanation. If he wants to stay governor, he will probably get his way. He just needs to stop talking and realize that nobody believes his self pity or apologies, and that this will probably be his last term in public office.

As for some of the ppl in this blog, Not all ppl from SC are stupid, and if it were up to the ppl in this state than that jerk wouldn't be here. They will not take our calls, and I seriously doubt any of the emails or letters that have poured into the state house been read. I look forward to the day that I read about his resignation, until then my neighbors and I will continue to rally against him.

chris_zzz   July 19th, 2009 4:03 pm ET

Narcissism is at its ugliest at this stage of an emotional breakdown. Sanford really thinks we care about his personal life beyond recognizing him as a narcissist and hypocrite. Please silently exit, stage left.

abby0802   July 19th, 2009 4:03 pm ET

He just doesn't get it, does he?

Why, oh why, do all these men stand up there and confess their sins and think that that makes it all okay with everyone.....

God may forgive him, but the voters have no reason to - dereliction of duty, bad judgment.....

If I was his wife, I would have kicked his derriere to the curb.....

His sons should shun him.....

Republicans, the self-proclaimed party of morality, family values, and Christianity, are not only hypocritical but also very, very weird.....

Anthony from NC   July 19th, 2009 4:02 pm ET

Uncle Ellsworthey   July 19th, 2009 4:00 pm ET

There seems to be an over abundance of apologies going around.
Gov Sanford does it too much and President Obama also does it far too often.
It will not help either of them in the long wrong. Gov Sanford comes across as not being sincere and President Obama only makes himself and the United States appear weak and timid to the world.

Have you noticed that those who would have crucified Clinton for his infidelity are immediately willing to forgive Sanford, and those who were ready and willing to forgive Clinton want to tar and feather Sanford? Not that it makes any difference. The most rabid supporters of either aren't willing to learn anything from noticing.

Randy Davis   July 19th, 2009 3:55 pm ET

Gov. Sanford is a scumbag....make him resign or impeach the loser. I can't believe the SC legislator is letting this go this far....

Sonnie   July 19th, 2009 3:54 pm ET

Why do all the libs here believe that this is a republican problem? Do they so easily forget about Edwards, Spitzer, Kilpatrick, Clinton, etc. etc.? And then you often see the "family values" thing coming out which makes them hypocritcs. Yes it does, but really shouldn't all politicians be encouraging strong family values? Eroding family values it's the number one problem with America right now. Geez. Start concentrating on how America is changing into Europe and the Soviet Union – how many czars do we have to elect, or does everyone need to go back and read some history books for once? My grandparents are Ukrainian immigrants, they know the real truth, the horror, yet people seem to support socialism – and it's just plain ignorance.

S. Carolina residents are the ones who look powerless to decide who should be working for them. Politics should exclude every candidate from speaking about their family values, and religious belief. Every politician lies...everyone lies. Right Sanford...ask his wife.

A typical Republican to be so hypocritical. So it is ok for a Republican to cheat and lie and expects to be forgiven, but when a Democrat does it, all the Republicans pound him to the bone and expect impeachment.
This country does NOT need anymore double standards from these typical Republicans who put us in the worse recession in history.

Willis, Texas   July 19th, 2009 3:46 pm ET

This man needs to go! He has spent taxpayers' money like there was no tomorrow - flying "first class and staying in the most expensive hotels" while advocating fiscal responsibility!

The schools are falling down and he has the audacity to turn down stimulus money to repair schools - but he ALWAYS managed to spend money on himself - living large like Donal Trump!

Valerie in Raleigh   July 19th, 2009 3:43 pm ET

Governor Sanford left his state without telling anyone, his staff included, just where he was going. Had there been an emergency in South Carolina, there would have been nobody there to take charge. If I took off from my position without telling my manager, he would have immediately shown me the door and I would be looking for another job. This was total derelection of duty for which he should have been immediately discharged. As far as his "sole mate" in Argentina -- that is totally only his wife's business. Another perfect example of a Republican "family vvalues man." Uggggg

Luke Brown   July 19th, 2009 3:40 pm ET

This man is one of the most craven in public life. However, I am still not sure what he is sorry about for except getting caught.

People in South Carolina want him out. The Republican party wants him out. His 6.5 years in office have been a disaster. He has ruined the state and offered nothing in the way of real leadership on the issues that affect most South Carolinians.

That's what he need to be apologizing for.

ol cranky   July 19th, 2009 3:40 pm ET

Mr Sanford can become a "better father, husband, friend and advocate" as a private citizen. He was derelict in his duties as Governor and, for that, he needs to leave office. If he still wants to serve in government, he can run for office again *after he resigns his current position* so the people can make the decision whether he is worthy of office despite the actions that became public due to his current scandal. To remain in office now shows that he has nothing but contempt for the state and citizens of SC.

Rodney   July 19th, 2009 3:37 pm ET

If your party stance is family values and your personal stance is self interest you can hardly be a member of that party without looking like a hypocrite.

I keep hearing Republicans say US is envied by the rest of the world as a standard of truth, justice and an beacon of hope. Nothing could be further from the truth.

The world sees the US as a country that puts money over people and self interest before public interest. It's not because those are the values of the people but because those are the values of business leaders and politicians who are the US leaders.

The amount of dishonesty and corruption is so high that things like this get brushed aside by most Americans. Statements like its his business and a family mater seem to make sense.

Adultery in SC is ilegal and punishable by fines or jail time. I think it is time to make politation accountable for the same laws as everyone else.

I live 10 miles from the Appalachian Trail.... everyone around here now laughs knowingly when someone says they are "going for a hike on the AT"...... And as many others have already pointed out, if the any of the rest of us vanished from our jobs for 5 days, with no forwarding info, and then returned, admitting to being out of the country, aside from the part about having an extra marital affair, we would not have a job to return to. It is unconscionable that this guy thinks he is above the standards and expectations that all of the rest of the world lives by, daily, week in and week out, because we are freaking grateful TO HAVE A JOB in this economy. How dare he bring God into this. That is insulting and absurd, and takes attention off of his own responsibility.... the family is one thing, but his job as Governor of SC is huge. I have no idea why he is still in office.

We in SC really could care less about the affair. What happens in someones bedroom is between them and God.

The issue here is, we have double digit unemployment. We are in dire straits. He wants to let teachers go and refuse stimulus money while gaining TONS of national media attention for being "noble" about letting us go down in flames.

Then we find out that he canceled appointments with corporations who wanted to bring thousands of jobs to SC so that he could spend OUR money to jet across the planet to visit his mistress. ANY ONE OF YOU, take a week off of your job with no notice, not telling your boss or coworkers, then lie about where you have been and see if you come back to a job.
He expects to come back with an apology.
Then he takes of ANOTHER week to go on vacation to reconcile with his wife. Again, canceling appointments and walking off the job.

THESE are the real issues here. Morality is a side issue for the republican party to deal with. SC wants him gone. He can keep his cheap words, broken promises and elitism to himself.

Lois Brady   July 19th, 2009 3:31 pm ET

The State of Carolina is so steeped in being "good ol' boys" that the people that are responsible for getting him out of office have to stop hunting, come out of the woods and figure out how to do this.

Brandon   July 19th, 2009 3:31 pm ET

Need I remind all of you who keep using "republican", "hypocrite", "liar", and "disgusting" in the same sentence that the most famous case regarding cheating while in public office was...our democratic president of the United States of America...
Odd how it was OK then...even women at the time could not stop lauding praises onto Clinton...mass denial on a scale not seen since.
Now this rep from South Carolina cheats, and you all want to hang him.
Who are the hypocrites, here, people...really?
Lies are lies.
All people tell them...not just one group of people.
Wrong-doings should be equally punished across the board with no emotion...none of us should have sympathy for this guy...he broke a promise.

Doug   July 19th, 2009 3:30 pm ET

"For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again".
So says Matthews Gospel.in the 7th Chapter. Sanford judged Bill Clinton for his actions and then did even worse himself. He wanted Clinton to either step down or be impeached as did his cronies. Where are his fellow Republicans who screamed at the rooftops for Bill Clinton's head on a platter? The hypocricy of The Party of Family and Moral Values.

TM   July 19th, 2009 3:30 pm ET

Governor, you an NOT have your cake and eat it too. You had an affair, and on at least one occasion used taxpayer funds to pay for your travel to see your mistress, and you lied about where you were going and why. That's three Commandments, infidelity, theft, and lying broken. Three strikes. You're OUT.

Charles   July 19th, 2009 3:30 pm ET

This guy needs to resign and go away. The rest of us have and seen and heard all we want to see and hear of him.

Mr. Anderson from Colorado says...   July 19th, 2009 3:30 pm ET

Way to go South Carolina! You voted this genius into office. You can keep his sorry butt!

Saragh   July 19th, 2009 3:30 pm ET

Sure, this guy can legally divorce his wife and get married as many times as he wants. But he will argue all day long about the "immorality" of gay marriage. Get a clue, Republicans...

the Film Professor   July 19th, 2009 3:26 pm ET

It would appear that the Governor would like for all of us to have more empathy for him than he has ever had for the schoolchildren in his state going to school in dilapidated buildings, the unemployed in his state struggling to find work and support their families in this record recession, and the public service employees like the police and firefighters who might be able to keep their jobs with the stimulous money.

A pox on you, Governor Hypocrite. Please resign, and go away.

RCA44   July 19th, 2009 3:25 pm ET

Enough already! How 'bout Sanford and Palin get a room together...somewhere in Siberia! She can see it from her porch.

annie s   July 19th, 2009 3:25 pm ET

What vow to his state? To continue not to care if his constituents are unemployed and starving? South Carolina would be better off without this rich hypocrite, who fought against taking funding that will help teachers keep jobs and extend unemployment benefits for those struggling to find work. The Lord may well forgive him for his sexual transgressions, but his selfish attitude as a Governor hopefully will not earn him an ounce of forgiveness here on the Planet Earth.

frank bischop   July 19th, 2009 3:25 pm ET

Keep trying, but it won't do you any good, Mr. Sanford, or should I say Mr. "I just can't keep it in my pants!"

Cheating on his wife is one thing, but lying and not fulfilling his responsibilities is cheating on all of us that live in S.C,!!!!!!

I vote we, the people of SC, divorce him!!!!

Independent   July 19th, 2009 3:22 pm ET

All right all you hypocrites out there bashing Republicans....Dem-wits democrats still hold the record for this type of sleaze...Kennedy at
Chappaquiddick, Clinton and Monica, Barney Frank.....come on!!!
Get off your high horses and quit your finger pointing and drooling...
you are like the monkees from Wizard of Oz!!!!

Sherrol in Canada   July 19th, 2009 3:22 pm ET

Michele   July 19th, 2009 3:22 pm ET

Put a fork in it. The adulterer's done.

j   July 19th, 2009 3:20 pm ET

who cares that he boned some chic, its his personal business and his personal problem between his family, just because you cheat on your spouse doesnt mean you cant get up and do your job, plenty of people do it, and their are plenty of reasons why people make mistakes in life

katie   July 19th, 2009 3:19 pm ET

He fell in love! Maybe it's because I'm English but I cannot understand how that equates with breaking the law? If he was a French politician he would have been promoted. Personally I feel very sorry for him.

Sherrol in Canada   July 19th, 2009 3:19 pm ET

Why in heaven's name would Jenny Sanford want this man?! Only God knows.

peligro   July 19th, 2009 3:18 pm ET

Another Strom affair?

Give it up   July 19th, 2009 3:18 pm ET

I feel that he may very well be sorry for his actions because he is about to lose his entire career and that is the only reason why. He doesn't care about family or morals. If he did he wouldn't have had the affair in the first place!

Brian MacDougall   July 19th, 2009 3:16 pm ET

Kind of hard to retake that "family values" and "sanctity of marriage" high ground after having an affair, especially one complete with lots of embarrassing videotaped moments and emails that show you as a real tool. Probably best to go away for awhile before the voters show you the door. Because the voters WILL show you the door.

Reformed Republican   July 19th, 2009 3:15 pm ET

If the voters of SC fall for this hypocrites "bible quoting god smack" and elect him again they should all be thrown in jail under the statutes of "Feloney Stupidity".
Dont' buy this religious-based con job from a member of the "C" Street Christian Mafia again SC, dump the chump....

Pat   July 19th, 2009 3:13 pm ET

Be a man and step down from office!

It takes a long time to process and heal trust in a broken marriage, and the children grow older resenting their father and many times follow their father's path of destruction with spouses,

renea   July 19th, 2009 3:10 pm ET

No more apoligizing unless you are still cheating if the people of S.C. havent forgave by now they wont. Just ask GOD to forgive you and move ,on After all He is truly the only one that will any way.

Len   July 19th, 2009 3:10 pm ET

To Mike,

Let us not compare. The right wing conservatives would have gone crazy if this was a Democrat. Difference is, if he is Republican and is Christian, and he says he is sorry, he is forgiven!!

Give me a break, his wife told him to stop having this affair and he continued anyway.....If she really wants to help her sons, she should leave him. It would send a message to their sons: You do not cheat on your wife and family. This would be the Christian way!!!

F   July 19th, 2009 3:07 pm ET

Sanford is a hypocrite and liar. He needs to resign and no longer put South Carolina in a negative light. Everytime he opens his mouth he only brings more shame on himself and the state. Why is it that rich conservative republicans think they can get away with everything and not suffer the consequences?

Toni   July 19th, 2009 3:05 pm ET

I just finished reading all the e-mails many of which state that Jenny, his wife, should leave him. While I don't condone adultery, I want to remind everyone that it takes two to make a marriage. I have followed Mark Sanford's career since he was in Congress and I found him to be an indivual who stood up for what he believed no matter the consequences. I would bet that there are serious issues in that marriage that need to be addressed and corrected by both partners.

On another note, I recently moved from South Carolina. Mark Sanford used to write editorials all the time so I didn't find it unusual that he was writing one now.

Laura   July 19th, 2009 3:05 pm ET

Just stop already. You're a loser... you got caught... you don't need to be in office anymore. Do everyone a favor and step down – it's the only way anyone will ever forgive you even just a little tiny bit. Please.

rick peregud   July 19th, 2009 3:03 pm ET

We should not be surprised at this,The State,Federal,County,City Leaders have all failed us.(citizens).They are the most inept, arrogant and not tuned in to reality bunch of traitors this country has ever seen.I believe this country (leaders) should all be tried for treason and crimes against the constitution. They should be put in jail for 25 years each and every one of them. You might think Im crazy ,but the more I talk to strangers(regular folks)they pretty much feel the same way I do.If someone would like to start a revolution please keep me in mind.

Dave T   July 19th, 2009 3:02 pm ET

He's a cheap, lying, worthless, moralizing, hypocritical scumbag who deserted his 4 sons on Father's Day. If a Democrat and/or African American man had done that, the smug self-righteousness erupting from Sanford's corner of the world would be deafening. And that C Street crowd is both scummy and scary. If nothing else, his weepy mea maybe culpas exposed that townhouse for the cesspool that it is.

Joe Campbell   July 19th, 2009 3:01 pm ET

Bottom Line Facts
1. Gov Sanford's extra-marital affair is between him, his wife and his God.
2. If Gov. Sanford misused tax payer funds, he should repay them.
3. Gov. Sanford was absent without leave.
Conclusion
Gov. Sanford should resign for the good of his state, South Carolina, based solely on No.3 above. If you or I clocked into work at 8am and was not heard from nor seen for several days, we would be terminated from that job or assignment. Our men and women of the armed forces are punished for being AWOL. We have asked them to sacrifice for a way of life our politicians are afraid to uphold. Gov. Sanford, do what is right for your state and resign today and go home.

He needs to go to his "soul mate"

Dear Governor Sanford,

Resign!

Sincerely,

Jesus loves mark sanford   July 19th, 2009 2:59 pm ET

and that is what is important. He is a wonderful christian governor a great father and a strong choice for this countrys next president. Atleast he isnt a muslim and wasnt born in Kenya! He will put the white back in the White House. He has been honest and up front. He has been a breath of fresh air in this otherwise hateful political climate that the liberals throw us all in. The GOP is the party of our lord and saviour Jesus Christ. The liberals will know this when they are burning in the lake of fire and Mark Sanford Sarah Palin and myself are flying up in heaven with Jesus!

I don't really care that he had the affair, that is between he and his wife.

He is a HYPOCRITE because he stated that Clinton should resign because of HIS affair, but when busted himself is all, oh no I shouldn't have to quit.

He thinks the rules don't apply to HIM.

Hawaii gal   July 19th, 2009 2:52 pm ET

This guy is pathetic! He needs to stop making a complete fool of himself and step down as Governor now. Sanford is continuing to harm his family by coming out again and again and saying he is sorry. He is a hypocrite, as believes others that have done what he has admitted to should step down, he should do the same. He is not "above "anyone, but "below " them. South Carolina deserves better than this jerk. They need to impeach him if he does not step down.

tony   July 19th, 2009 2:52 pm ET

So when than Senator Obama stated that speaking for God was "above his pay scale" everyone criticized him. When Sanford says it, Pter claims "no one has the moral authority to judge" him.
Such hypocricy.

Vincent Petrosino   July 19th, 2009 2:43 pm ET

Is this more advice from the "C Street Band?" Remember he was a member of the "Family" a supposed christian sect devoted to keeping white men in power and ignoring moral controversies until they get caught. Ensign and Pickering are and were alumni of this group whose leader uses Hitler as a primary example of good leadership. South Carolinians should be ware. THIS MAN NEEDS TO RESIGN!

mike kaplan   July 19th, 2009 2:41 pm ET

More than the affair, it's the hypocrisy that rankles here: Ensign, Coburn, Gingrich, Pickering......the list goes on and on. Every one of these folks not only said that Clinton should have resigned, but also voted to impeach him, and chose to take up nearly 2 years of the people's business investigating Clinton's affair. And all of them were already cheating on their own wives at the time. What a disgraceful bunch of hypocrites.

And worst of all, these are the same folks who posture that they are "protecting the sanctity of marriage" by denying to gays the right to take vows that they themselves could not honor.

DCE   July 19th, 2009 2:41 pm ET

This column was in our paper today. Noticeably missing is a public apology to his wife and children. Hollow words. As one commenter said: resign and go to Argentina to be with your soul mate and spare us all more of this PR psychobable. If it takes your in-laws, pastor and the secret Republican club in DC to put humpty-dumpty back together again....I think it is time to take the next flight to Buenos Aires. You only have one life to live Mark-your wife is independently wealthy-she'll marry someone else, Get along little doggy! You're a mess!

enufalready   July 19th, 2009 2:40 pm ET

If Mrs. Sanford wants to continue a marriage with a low-life, sniveling worm after he has confessed to the world that he has found his soul mate elsewhere, that's certainly her business. However, for the sake of the general public, please go away. I think is is plain that the consensus is, Mr. Sanford, you are fooling no one with your whining, and it's time for you to fade into the sunset. Don't you have any pride?

sch in raleigh   July 19th, 2009 2:39 pm ET

How is this going to make him a 'better husband'? He NEVER said he was ending the affair with the other woman. He still calls her his 'soul mate'. What a sleeze

Just the facts   July 19th, 2009 2:37 pm ET

Yes people do make mistakes but you can't pull the kind of things he did while in a high ranking government position. First of all he lied about his whereabouts for a few days, didn't he? Why wasn't he working for the people of his state during that time? Does the fact that he can be swayed away from his post by a woman thousands of miles away mean that his decision making can be swayed away by self interest groups?

How is someone like this still in office? People of South Carolina, I implore you: get rid of this fool as soon as you can get the votes together to do it!

president, governor, if you cannot be faithful honest with your family–the traitor, then you should not hold public office. some say, forgive forget, but these same people continue to blame bush for our problems, the same people who refuse to see how clinton contributed to this economic mess have forgiven him but not bush. strange blindness that some have. with that said, forgiveness granted to people of this kind only out of office.

moses   July 19th, 2009 2:31 pm ET

Joyce   July 19th, 2009 2:29 pm ET

After 19 years, I got suspicious, wired my home phone and caught him telling her how much he loved her. Divorced in 34 days. Been trying to forget it and forgive him for 8 years. Can't be done. She will never know in her heart if he is always thinking about her and wanting to be with her and only stays with her because of his children. Still single. (She was 20 years younger and didn't keep him over 6 weeks after the divorce).

Dakota, Lake Stevens, WA   July 19th, 2009 2:29 pm ET

Governor Sanford admitted to committing adultery. He does not deserve public office, or his wife. He should resign; and, he should file for divorce, so his wife can get on with HER life.

Hopeful Optimist   July 19th, 2009 2:29 pm ET

When the normal person would want to get lost, crawl in a hole and pull the dirt in over him, the fact that this poor soul obviously wants to maintain a public presence attests to the fact that he is emotionally and mentally unbalanced. Probably should be evaluated by a very good practitioner for depression, possibly b/p. Once he gets better, if he ever does, he'll look back on this episode with tremendous shame and embarrassment, not only for himself but for his poor family.

Or........it could be that he is just pathologically flawed in matters of judgement, discretion, emotional maturity, etc. Frankly, I could live with his personal indiscretions, but his political leanings are abysmally unacceptable.

dhatch   July 19th, 2009 2:28 pm ET

What he doesn't seem to get is that most of us don't really care about him having a fling with another woman, that is a transgression between him and his wife. Most of us don't care that he is a hypocrit either, most politicians are also. What really sends me over the edge is that he is a thief. He stole from his employer (the state of SC). Most of us would be fired if we stole $3K from our employer I do admit that he paid that money back, but still how could this man ever be entrusted with the kind of money that he is responsible for, most employers would also have us arrested as well. He is just another thief that should be in jail for stealing.

concerned citizen   July 19th, 2009 2:26 pm ET

What a hypocrit!!!, while he was so frugal with education, budget and state employees and retirees, except his own friends and staff, we know now about his expensive trips, his affairs and everything else, but he has found the right words GOD and the BIBLE. Please Mr Sanford GO HOME and do the only honorable thing left RESIGN and work on your marriage, the state does not need you

Shingo   July 19th, 2009 2:24 pm ET

The Gov needs to step down. Besides the moral side of this issue the Gov shows he lacks decision making discretion. He over a long period of time showed this lack of ability. If he cannot keep a sacred vow to the person he claimed he loved above all others he lacks the ability to keep a vow to the people. Time to go.

Mark Sanford judged anyone that committed adultery, so now I judge him YOU HYPOCRITE!! YOU FOOL!!

Butch Dillon   July 19th, 2009 2:21 pm ET

Sanford is a coward, a holier-than-thou coward who is thoroughly incapable of making the tough, right choices to lead a decent life. He's lived a life centered on himself and now he wants everyone to join him in "Mark Sanford" worship. Please Gov. Sanford - Vanish!

willowood said: "In Japan they resign when breaking the public trust…"

That is just the first half of what people would do in Japan and in South Korea: they don't just resign, they commit suicide after resigning. In that case, Mark Sanford would have been burried by now.

If this guy had not preached "values" and tried his A off to get Bill Clinton impeached, maybe it would have been less laughable and more forgivable.

Rob P.   July 19th, 2009 2:19 pm ET

I had to check the date on the article to make sure I wasn't in the archives.

This 'news' is weeks old. Please drop Sanford into the nearest dumpster. I refuse to believe that CNN can't find more relevant news somewhere on this planet. Somehow, somewhere, more important things are going on than the ramblings of an obviously distressed man.

Ancientrivr   July 19th, 2009 2:14 pm ET

The problem isn't the infidelity. The problem is a Governor whose emotions and judgement are so unstable and poor that he is incommunicado AND leaves the country without properly handing off his responsibilities. In any other job, including those with significantly less responsibility, he's be fired, and rightfully so. He IS a hypocrit for not resigning when he demanded the same from others who had also been unfaithful. Infidelity is a personal matter, but when it has come to others, Sanford has not thought so in the past. Let him live by his own creed.

Nathan,   July 19th, 2009 2:13 pm ET

He should be forgiven and then fired by the state and his wife. I think he should be fired for claiming to be an advocate for fiscal responsibility and refusing to accept the stimulas money to help the people inhis state while at the same time running up huge expenditures for overseas trips. This guy is a hypocrite on so many levels. How his wife could stay with knowing that some other woman is his soulmate and not her who bore him 3 sons is beyond me.

Pixie Stone   July 19th, 2009 2:12 pm ET

What don't you understand about "hypocracy" Mr. Sanford? Your motor mouth does nothing for you except further advertise your "hypocracy." Do you think that living in a cult on "C" Street somehow validates your actions? You have a beautiful family of which you once said you were raising your sons with Christian values!! Oh, really? You have dishonored, and continue to dishonor every value set forth by our Founding Fathers. Religion and politics aside, you are scum, but... oh, that's right, you're a Republican... silly me, expecting you would practice what your preach. Step aside, we've heard enough.

Larry - Hazleton, pa   July 19th, 2009 2:11 pm ET

Does anybody remember what this man and his buddy from the "C" Street group tried to do to a sitting President for less than what they have now admitted to? They insisted that the only proper course of action for President Clinton was to resign – what fools these guys are and to think that they still help to run parts of our govdernment – GET OUT Sanford, Ensign and Vitter – none of you desevre any respect at all – If the voters of your states believe that you still belong then they are sicker than you are.

John Q   July 19th, 2009 2:10 pm ET

Chrissy, what we do in our private lives is private. But when you are part of a party that blames moral corruption on gays, and claims the moral high ground on everything, this is a pretty big problem.

Notfooled   July 19th, 2009 2:10 pm ET

Give it up Gov. you are another Republican fraud that has been exposed by GOD!

You are a Fraud and a hypocritical Republican. PERIOD!!!

so what? I don't care what his sex life is like. Jeez folks get a clue, this isn't news, it's gossip. Does his sex life make any difference to his job performance?

Americans need to start being realistic about their politicians private life -it makes no difference!

Pat in IL   July 19th, 2009 2:09 pm ET

He has the morals of a man who thinks he's entitled to whatever he wants whenever he wants. He has the judgement of an idiot and should not be in public service. If he lived these lies, then he's certainly capable of lying or bending the rules on many other things....proof of that is that he thought it was okay to leave the state unattended (there goes the entitlement and poor judgement again).
Wait until more comes out about both Sarah and Todd Palin's affairs – now that one will be even more "fun" because of the hypocrisy.

Tammy   July 19th, 2009 2:08 pm ET

After what he did, he cannot be a better father or husband. No matter what the remorse. No way.

John Q   July 19th, 2009 2:06 pm ET

Mike, how about we stay on topic instead. Bringing up other stuff (especially 20+ years old) that's completely irrelevant to this discussion is inexcusably partisan. You should be jumping on the bandwagon, not supporting the guy by trying to redirect to the problems of other politicians.

A little sad   July 19th, 2009 2:03 pm ET

How can the people ever trust this hypocrit and liar?

my god is great, your god needs work   July 19th, 2009 2:03 pm ET

the utter shamelessness of christian politicians makes me laugh. "ok, so i lied about my fidelity to my family and my values. i lied about where i went off to for five days, and i lied about saving the state money on airfare, but it's all ok, you know why? god is making me into a better governor! i couldn't be like king david if i didn't have a few rough patches. if you oppose me or call for my resignation, you're actually trying to thwart the will of god!" it's only a small step from there to "i rule by divine right." don't any of the other christians ever get embarrassed by this, or are none of them capable of shame, and christianity is just a giant, self-serving racket?

Carole   July 19th, 2009 2:02 pm ET

People of South Carolina, this guy did not want to take stimulus monies to help the struggling constituents he is responsible for in a quest to further his political career. Selfish act.

People of South Carolina this guy did not fulfill his obligation to serve the people of your state nor his family 24/7 and went MIA for lust in Buenos Aires. Selfish act.

Governor Sanford asked President Clinton to step down who managed to cheat and still do his job 24/7. Maybe he needs to get away from the C STREET GANG. CSTREET GANG feels this powerful White males are entiled while the little peons and serfs suffer.

RESIGN like Palin governor.

The govenor forgot to mention "lover."

Debbie   July 19th, 2009 2:01 pm ET

When will this man learn to shut up about it? This sounds so desperate, and ultimately, insincere. His "soul mate" is the woman in Argetina. His wife makes embarrassing statements sounding like an angry mother to a an errant child who will punish him. Why is it so hard for these two to learn to shut up and deal privately with a personal matter?

He apologizes, but does not say what he will do. Make things "more" right? That's a strange statement. It's right, or not — and really what's right for them is a private matter.

From the looks of it, the best thing they could do is divorce, this is no marriage. Divorce, let him duck out to Argentina and live there, or bring his soul mate here. But for God's sake, shut up and move on!

Larry from RI   July 19th, 2009 1:59 pm ET

sk   July 19th, 2009 1:59 pm ET

So...if his wife has no self respect by staying with him, what do we say about Mrs. Clinton? Isn't this all a bit hypocritical do say that he should step down and say that he's just another dirty Republican? Have we forgotten our former President's scandal? Someone please show me the difference in the two aside from the fact that one admitted his mistake and the other lied about it.

Jane   July 19th, 2009 1:59 pm ET

Governor: For someone so well educated and someone who has risen so far in politics, I can't believe the insensitivity of your public comments. Especially the statement about your mistress being your "soul mate" and that you were trying to fall back in love with your wife. Not only were they not smart, they were insulting and demeaning to your wife. Even if you aren't in love with her anymore, she certainly deserves more respect from you.

Renee   July 19th, 2009 1:59 pm ET

Humbles and broken my foot. Sanford is as arrogant as ever or he would step down and give 200% to his wife and sons, but instead he comes up using God, like they all do when they get caught, and he is still a disgusting self-righteous hypocrite.

jellymon   July 19th, 2009 1:58 pm ET

Dude–Just quit. Just quit like you did to your state when you had to go get laid.

Tim   July 19th, 2009 1:57 pm ET

Susan (Michigan)   July 19th, 2009 1:56 pm ET

He'd better watch out. The right doesn't like apologies...look at Palin, and look at the garbage thrown at our President for trying tho make amends for Bush's slights. This makes Sanford almost human.

JC   July 19th, 2009 1:55 pm ET

This is the story of a sociopath. If you study this saga he only cared about his own feelings, not those of others. Why are the people of South Carolina allowing him to keep taking their taxpayer money in the form of a paycheck. As long as he stays in office he continues to cheat the people of South Carolina. Boot him and then forgive him!

ByronJones   July 19th, 2009 1:55 pm ET

Wow what a reflex. It seems that every time we catch a GOP guy with his pants down, someone reminds us of Ted Kennedy and Chappaquiddick. This happened today in response to this column, in Frank Rich's column and Maureen Dowd's column.

Is the battle cry of these presumably GOP folks "Remember Chappaquiddick!"?

How many will be around for the 50th, 60th and 70th anniversaries, I wonder. Do y'all hold reunions?

christo   July 19th, 2009 1:54 pm ET

Larry from RI   July 19th, 2009 1:52 pm ET

Now he sounds like Jimmy Haggart doesn't he?

Why doesn't the GOP ever practice what they preach?

Will all the prisoners in the South Carolina prison system get a "second Chance" also because only God should judge them? Gov. Sanford is showing what class he has...too bad it's all third. That governors pay is just too sweet to give up...especially when your next job is going to be asst. night manager at Piggly Wiggly...

nas from PA   July 19th, 2009 1:49 pm ET

Men will be men. Sometimes that means they think they can do whatever they want and its ok as long as they don't get caught. His crime wasn't his affair. Thats between he, his wife and his savior (and the Argentine lover). His crime is leaving the state with no way to contact him and with spending tax payer money while touting financial responsibility.

The people of S. Carolina have a poor political representative who only thinks of the states citizens when it is politically convenient to do so to save his job.

He is in need of a little help menatlly and I feel sorry for his wife and children.

JR   July 19th, 2009 1:49 pm ET

Ted Kennedy – murder extraordinare! Don't forget Chappaquidick and all of his lies, but money and power ALWAYS get you off the hook.

They're all liars and scum, and don't give a crap about any of us!

johnny   July 19th, 2009 1:47 pm ET

The saddest part about all of this is that his wife is willing to give him the chance "to fall in love with her again." I do not care if he is willing to humble himself, he needs to be humbled. How can there be no consequences for his actions?

Deb in Northglenn, Co   July 19th, 2009 1:47 pm ET

Governor Sandford obviously cares nothing about his state or his wife. You would think he would shut up for the sake of his four sons who have to read and hear this cr*p everyday. I cannot begin to imagine what these boys will go thorugh when school starts again. If Sandford feels the neeed to bare his soul, he needs to see a therapist or those nut jobs at C Street. But keep it out of the media, if only to protect your sons.

Joanna in PA   July 19th, 2009 1:47 pm ET

Repay the money you stole from the tax payers you Hippocrate! You fought your people on the stimulus money while stealing from them. You called for Clinton to resign when he did the same thing as you. But you think you are above Clinton i guess? As long as you say God saved you, it's OK? Dems remember that one when you are caught cheating.
I actually believe Sanford loves this Argentinian women. I really do not care if he cheated on his wife. But i do care about the double standards and the C street ideology. "the Family" is scary, they look to Hitler as a role model. Google it, its real!! And they have the gall to say Obama is like Hitler. LOL They believe they are above everyone because God choose them to be in a power position. This is what the GOP has come down too!

Bill Sampson   July 19th, 2009 1:46 pm ET

Babbling on about "God", again, Mark? That is truly the mark of a scoundrel.

Drop the "God" crap, PLEASE! If there is some great all encompassing power in the universe, Mr. Sanford, that superior being is not in the least concerned with your whacky sex life. Get over yourself already. You and all the rest of your fellow repressed, megalomaniacal "Christian" brothers need to mind your own business and drop the idea that some magical being is all worried about where you may or may not display your naughty parts.

Independent_me   July 19th, 2009 1:45 pm ET

I don't get it...
He and the other adulterer, Ensign, called for President Clinton's resignation when he had his "affair" (they did not have sex) with Lewinski. But they won't quit????

Suddenly Newt, Giuliani and their ilk who hollered for Clinton's resignation are silent????

Oh, I forgot – they are adulterers too!

Republicans are shameless hypocrites!

Lilarose in Bandon, Oregon   July 19th, 2009 1:44 pm ET

If Sanford's Argentinian bimbo is truly his "soul mate," there is no way he can reconcile with his wife unless it is to be "just friends."

If I were Mrs Sanford, I would dump this jerk faster than you can sing "Don't cry for me, Argentina."

Karen   July 19th, 2009 1:44 pm ET

Skyview   July 19th, 2009 1:44 pm ET

Sandford is a typical republican hypocrit; he says one thing while doing just the opposite. He pledges to protect your assets, while stealing from you; he promises to respect you and your values, while he lies to you; and he offers fidelity, while he commits treason.

simple jerk

mervel   July 19th, 2009 1:41 pm ET

The only reason this is a big deal is that he is talking about it so much. Hillary stayed with Bill, Edwards has kept his wife so far and so it goes. If he would simply play it down no one would care that much.

A one time affair is common, 60% of married men have one, it does not mean he has to divorce and hurt his kids; most people who have affairs don't divorce.

Maybe he could become a polygamist? Wife number 2 in Argentina wife number 1 at home.

Mary   July 19th, 2009 1:41 pm ET

Everyone is focusing on the moral issues of adultery and the blatant use of taxpayer's money for personal use. Those things can be summed up easily. Adultery is wrong and it's up to his wife to decide to forgive it or not. Not the public. Taxpayer's money? A judge and jury needs to resolve that. The real question here is this: Are the women of Argentina so desperate that they need to settle for American, married men that are neither good looking nor very charismatic? Not to mention, a wimpy type? This does not speak well of Argentinian men...I'm just amazed anyone WANTED to have an affair with the guy. It truly baffles me!

Aaron   July 19th, 2009 1:41 pm ET

Man, this is entertaining. If this were a movie, his wife will eventually let go peacefully fade into the sunset with his soulmate. The governor who gave up his power for love.

Jane   July 19th, 2009 1:41 pm ET

Governor you can do the people of South Carolina a lot of good if you just go away. What is so puzzling is why you want step down. Is it because you can't be with your family on a daily basis? What would your life have been if you were retired? Do us everyone a favor and shut up and step down.

SHL, TX   July 19th, 2009 1:39 pm ET

Actions speak louder than words, in all due respect, please stop apologizing in the press and GET TO WORK and do something positive and constructive for your family and the state.
It's not about YOU and your need for punishment or forgiveness, it's now about the needs of your wife, your boys and the citizens of South Carolina.
Go forward become the better husband, father and Governor and STOP making public apologies.

I personally don't care that he cheated on his wife. That's between him and his family. What annoys me about him is that he was one of the many who threw President Clinton's affair in his face and insisted he be placed on the stand for something such as that. What Governor Sanford is doing is hypocritical, and insisting on receiving the forgiveness he wasn't willing to give others, and in God's name. The hypocrisy is what is truly despicable.

american citizen in SC.   July 19th, 2009 1:31 pm ET

Sanford could finally stand up and be a man.....by resigning, paying back every dollar of the State's money he spent on himself, apologizing to his wife and the citizens of the State, and removing himself from the political arena for the rest of his life. Nothing worse than a man that speaks from both sides of his mouth; preaching righteousness in all things then doing things he's preaching against. I may not have agreed with all his politics, but I did respect his strong moral principles. Not any more....all my respect for him is gone. He's just a joke now.

Cyrus   July 19th, 2009 1:29 pm ET

To those bashing me for my earlier comments ( Failure as A Republican, Cloe and Stubanas). The point Im trying to make is really simple, differentiate between Mark the Governor and Mark the man who had an extra marital affair . Great wise people like solomon had 600 wives and 1000 concubines. Lets stop pretending there is a man who has never had an affair with an extra woman or a girlfriend. Lets stop the holy than thou attitude.

John of Michigan   July 19th, 2009 1:20 pm ET

Bet his wife is giving him No Forgiveness, No Reconciliation, No
Understanding, No Anything...................

A person must feel some measure of concern or forgiveness in his heart to see a man so distraught and confused and contrite.

Only a person who is NOT a religious person or certainly, not a Christian, would have No consideration or forgiveness in his soul.

Remember folks: There is NO PERFECT HUMAN BEING.
This statement includes his wife and kids.

Governor Sanford should put this incident behind him, if he considers his behavior a 'mistake' ....and forge ahead.

NO MORE PUBLIC APOLOGIES, regardless of the wife and kids and other family members OR the citizens of his state.

ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!!!

Ramon   July 19th, 2009 1:19 pm ET

Gov Sanford cast "stones" at Pres Clinton for his immoral philandering. Did he accept Bill Clinton's apology? NO! Instead, he voted for impeachment. This makes Mark Sanford a hypocrite. Impeach the hypocrite!!!

Sam I Am   July 19th, 2009 1:17 pm ET

Apology accepted. Now, as a man of ethics and honor that you claim to be, step down. You have embarrassed yourself, your family, and your state. You have made a mockery of your office and Republicans.

Frankly, your indescretions with the woman in South America are something you will have to work out with your wife, and I don't feel it's any of my business. What you DO have to answer for is the lying to your staff and your state, and the stealing of tax dollars you spent on your trips, and your incredibly poor judgement to disappear for a few days, even though you were governor.

Mr. Sanford, you are nothing more than a pathetic loser. Go home. I'm sure there's a local restaurant that needs an assistant manager.

sol – Unfortunately, Gov. Sanford is one of those that passed judgment on others when they had this same issue. If his wife and children can forgive and go on, that is their choice. But, to be a hypocrite, lambaste others while your doing the same thing, to me speaks volumes about his character.

Steve in Las Vegas,NV   July 19th, 2009 1:13 pm ET

Having an affair is bad enough and it happens, but to leave the state and not notify anyone that you will be gone is beyond the pale.

What was Gov MIA (Sanford) thinking when he did this? He must either resign or be impeached because of his lack of good judgement.

The good peope of SC deserve so much better!

LiLa   July 19th, 2009 1:12 pm ET

I wouldn't care whether politicians were having affairs IF they were discreet about it and didn't use tax dollars to fund their liaisons. It falls under the category of "none of my business."

Bev   July 19th, 2009 1:12 pm ET

Individuals who hold public office should be kept to a higher standard. They are being paid by citizens to represent the common good and make valued decisions, and thus 1) should not quit when the going get tough (Ms Palin), nor be morally and ethically inept (Mr. Sanford). When those elected to public office violate the public trust, they should and must be held accountable. There should be no reward for quitters or cheaters.

Bob Ramos   July 19th, 2009 1:11 pm ET

Sanford will never be taken seriously until he faces President Clinton and aplogizes. When the Lewinsky affair came out, Sanford was a Congressman. He was in the forefront of demanding that President Clinton resign. Sanford swore that someone in that position was not fit to hold office. Now, Sanford has been caught in the same delima and is doing his best to stay in office.

Simmy   July 19th, 2009 1:11 pm ET

Denise.......I understand your point of view.........Legally each person is innocent until proven guilty (or deemed guilty by 12 of his/her peers).....Gov. Sanford has admitted his guilt, so he is guilty of falling to a human weakness. There is a Higher law that says 'if a man be overtaken in a fault, you who are (his peers) restore him to the faith with in a spirit of meekness" – less you succumb to the same or similar fate.......I choose to forgive the gov......I think he should resign and concentrate on rebuilding his family...But that's his choice......

None of this would have happened if he wasn't caught. The guy, like most politicians is enjoying the freedom that comes from not having to be responsible for your actions because he can wave the magic christian wand and make it all better....pathetic but so is most of the south when it comes to this .... you can break the law as long as you have Jesus in your heart...

Patsy Hodges   July 19th, 2009 1:08 pm ET

want their "power" back? They screwed up when they had it.
So, boo-hoo, this guy got caught, and how long has be been
doing this kind of thing. He is willing to judge others (Clinton)
but does not want to be judged. He needs a new "soul" mate,
namely, God, the final Judge.

Aunt Bea and Opie   July 19th, 2009 1:08 pm ET

I wonder how many citizens of SC have betting pools going on what he does as soon as his term is up. More importantly, he needs to quit talking to the media about this and do the job he was elected to do. Hypocrits like Sanford need to remember the feather that they use to tar others can be used on them as well.

Stu-Florida   July 19th, 2009 1:07 pm ET

It never fails to amaze me how many "I'm sorrys" people carry around in their pockets like dollar bills at the ready to shell them out at a weak moment. I'm sick of apologizes by these weak...

Perhaps he should have used his "I'm sorry" to his Argentine soul mate and said... "I'm sorry, but I have obligations to the people of South Carolina and I cannot just disappear" ... I'm sorry and I know you are my soul mate, with fine tan lines, but I cannot have an affair after vowing to my wife at our wedding"... I'm sorry, but I'm a low life looser and can't say no to sex, money or power"

Tired of conservative hyprocracy   July 19th, 2009 1:07 pm ET

As one of the most vocal critics of former President Clinton, please do the right thing and step down from political life:

If you live by the sword, ye shall die by the sword
Will he who is without sin cast the first stone

You have lied to your wife, stolen from the people of SC and your holier-than-thou attitude gives all Christians a bad name.
Do the right thing – quit the your position and work on your family and faith.

Seattle Sue   July 19th, 2009 1:06 pm ET

Has Sanford promised to quit preaching to us about having high family/moral values? I understand these things happen (adultery) but it seems worst when it comes from someone that claims to have higher standards then other people. What a two faced hypocrite.

KC   July 19th, 2009 1:04 pm ET

This man needs to step down from office and get help. He continues to make a fool of himself, his family and his state if they keep him in office.

Wanderer   July 19th, 2009 1:04 pm ET

The hypocrite is the one who believes he is better than other people. The hypocrite is the one who casts the first stone and deserves the stone being thrown back to him. In a perfect sense, we should not throw stones at other people because we all have sins, but if one who uses Jesus ‘s words ‘who without sin can cast the first stone’ as an excuse, he also deserves the first stone because he is not Jesus. He is a hypocrite. I think Mr. Sanford should not apologize at all because it will not change the mind of people. Jesus also said ‘… sin no more…’. Therefore, Mr. Sanford needs to admit he was wrong and a hypocrite. He should understand he deserves punishment and if he stops being self-righteous and never show off his Christianities then he will naturally be forgiven.
If we don’t want to be stoned, don't throw any stone at anybody.

Donna from Colorado Springs   July 19th, 2009 1:04 pm ET

Too little.......too late Sanford! Cheating and lying people are only sorry when they get caught! You are just another fine example of hypocritical Republicans who champion "family values" and preach to the rest of us heathens how we should be living.

Darth Vadik, CA   July 19th, 2009 1:03 pm ET

Dirt is dirt, scumb is scumb, republicans is a republicans....

...life goes on, its just a fact of life that we will have scumbags around us. Oh well.

sol   July 19th, 2009 1:03 pm ET

I think it is not a big deal , the most important thing is that his wife and family forgive him. The rest is story, it does not matter weather he stays in his position or not which solely determined by the people around him, the Republicans, .

We are all humans , we do mistakes , affairs are sometimes incidental, where u do not have control, but once into it , it is very hard to come out..

This guy might not be happy with the relationship with his wife, be emotional or physical, so he can easily fumbled when he met this argentinine woman, look at New york governor, Bill cliniton, the list is endless, so it is important that to realize the circumstance these guys are in , but i do not pardon those activities but sometimes happen.

It is his wife and his kids , the most affected so let us leave that decision for his family.

wisconsin mom   July 19th, 2009 1:03 pm ET

Jims right – it is a reflection on our country. may be cause we don t make anything here anymore – rather we make alot less. we just broker
what exists regardless of how it comes into being. A huge chain of middle men carrying one screw driver to three people who tighten one nut.

I just do not see how any women could stay with a "man" who calls another woman his soul mate!!! that's all I would think about every time he touched me or looked at me! I just can't imagine "getting over it"

TOM   July 19th, 2009 12:59 pm ET

Mark Sanford is an arrogant, rich SOB who is used to always getting his way. The only thing that has changed is he got caught. Zebras don't change their stripes and neither will Sanford. This may be the first time in his life that he thinks he was wrong.

JDQ   July 19th, 2009 12:59 pm ET

I can't see any self-respecting woman staying with a man who says he has found his "soul mate" with another woman. How could she remain a wife to him? One thing no one seems to mention in all this is that when one partner is unfaithful, it exposes not only him (or her) to STDs, at least one of which is ultimately fatal, it also exposes the wife or husband, unwittingly, to it also. Of course no one who thinks of another as a "soul mate" could dream that they might have an illness that is communicable, but the possibility exists. After all, if a man or woman would have an affair with a married person, who else has he or she been with?

Mike   July 19th, 2009 12:59 pm ET

If we are debating whether Gov. Sanford has the moral authority to remain in office, let us all remember Ted Kennedy's Chappaqiddick incident.

jim in Ohio   July 19th, 2009 12:55 pm ET

I think the bigger picture is why do we Americans think the people we elect to represent us are super human. They are no better or no worse than the rest of us, but merely a representation of today's society. The ones who should be cast out are the hypocrites who stand at their pulpits and condemn adultery (later found cheating), homosexuality (later found out gay), drug use (abusing oxy contin). Lets start electing leaders who stop judging others and want to move us forward.

longdoodlez   July 19th, 2009 12:55 pm ET

its hard to find a decent politician – it perhaps draws the wrong people.
Can someone name a decent politician with out regard to party?

ak   July 19th, 2009 12:53 pm ET

Even Jenny knows Mark can't keep vows. Talk is cheap. In Sanford's case – WORTHLESS.

Rubbish, this trash will be out cheating on his wife in the time it takes to curl ur peter!

Stubanas   July 19th, 2009 12:53 pm ET

Sorry for another comment, but I just read Peter's remark below. No one has the moral authority to judge you? Is this guy crazy or just stupid? Every human being has the right, if not the responsibility, to be judged by their peers.
Most of his peers think he's a liar and a thief.

Chrissy   July 19th, 2009 12:53 pm ET

Should citizens actually care about people's sex lives? Just because a politician is in the spotlight, should we still care about who Stanford has sex with? Under the U.S. Constitution, people have a fundamental right to privacy, which encompasses people's sex lives. Europe, especially France, laughs at the U.S. for its puritanical response to cases like Stanford's. I could care less who Stanford sleeps with. I do care, however, if he takes a trip on my taxpayer dollars. I also think Stanford has a problem with applying his theological views and ideals into reality, but that's his problem – not ours.

Big Al C.   July 19th, 2009 12:52 pm ET

Mark is sorry he got caught. If Jenny would just forgive him and let the Maria move in next door. A lot of Marks traveling problems would be solved. And South Carolinians would not have far to go to find their Governor. I wonder how he feels when his son's look into his eyes.

Kate in SW Fla   July 19th, 2009 12:52 pm ET

U make me puke   July 19th, 2009 12:50 pm ET

Sanford, let me tell you what any self-respecting wife should have: Hit the road, Jack - now - and take your crocodile tears with you. Have fun with your mistress and "soul mate." How can your wife even stand to look at you without vomiting every time you call another woman your "soul mate"? I'm getting ready to puke for her.

Denise   July 19th, 2009 12:49 pm ET

Please leave God out of this!! You weren't giving HIM a 2nd thought when you cheated on your wife!

Ken in NC   July 19th, 2009 12:49 pm ET

Gov. Sanford will not resign because he is stupid and stubborn. He has screwed up and through it all as he tries to be humble, he shows how stubborn he can be and how willing he is to sacrifice all for the sake of saying "I HUNG TIGHTUNDER PRESSURE". Stupid is all it is. He has disgraced himself and still he is fortunate his wife will still have him back. In my culture if I were to do as he has done and then went back home my wife would turn me from a Rooster to a Hen one night after I go to sleep. Gov. Sanford is no more than a fool that has no sense of loyalty to his wife and family. Like so many others, he thinks with the wrong head.

Paul   July 19th, 2009 12:47 pm ET

He should go on a forgiveness retreat with the Rest of the "C" street boys that knew about the affair, and were also having affairs of their own. I wouldn't really care if they weren't all marching around touting "Moral Values" and being members of the Promise Keepers. Give me a break – Hypocricy knows no limits here.

OK, "Peter," you had me going there for a minute. Come clean, you're either Sacha Baron Cohen or a Borat wannabee.

ChicagoJim   July 19th, 2009 12:46 pm ET

Why doesn't Mark Sanford apologize for being a hypocrite? His marital infidelity diminishes the "sanctity of marriage", a term he used to oppose my right to marry whom I choose. I don't need his apology for tom-cattin' around, his wife and children do. So, Mark, shut up and don't apologize to me, unless you are contrite for being a "flaming" hypocrite!

Brendan H., San Antonio, TX   July 19th, 2009 12:45 pm ET

This from the Party of Family and Moral Values.

And for the Right Wing swifties, this is news, just like you continue to carp about Bill Clinton in your media outlets. This man is a sitting Governor, with huge credibility problems!!! H's still deluding himself into thinking he's a viable, presidential candidate!

Someone please put this guy out of his misery (and ours). He clearly is too distracted to be running the state...has to be enough cause for impeachment now. He doesn't have the courage to resign, so take him out.....please.

We can't have this distracting media coverage from all the important tweets that Palin is about to start sending....thank you GOP...most entertaining reality show on tv....

Eric   July 19th, 2009 12:42 pm ET

I don't care what party you are in, the way this guy has treated his family is wrong. It doesn't matter how many apologies he makes, his family deserves better.

Stubanas   July 19th, 2009 12:42 pm ET

A liar and a thief (taking state's money for travel?), needs to go away, as in prison. But then again, we invoke 'God' and everyone wants to forgive.
I think George Carlan once said he didn't do political skits, because we deserved what we got.
Lets fire this guy and put him into the courts. Not give him a chance to apologize and give the money back. THATS WHAT WE DESERVE.

Barry   July 19th, 2009 12:41 pm ET

ken   July 19th, 2009 12:40 pm ET

You know the real issue is that he left his post and left the country and had lied to staff about his whereabouts. Is that good governorship – no.
He should resign – period. Its up to SC people to decide his fate.

Catwoman in Mi   July 19th, 2009 12:39 pm ET

The guv needs to give it up and get a life. I for one am nauciated by his attempt to stay in the news. One would think he would get it and put his tail between his legs and retreat to the doghouse . Too Too much information. The damage is done and no matter what he says, who will believe him.

Paula   July 19th, 2009 12:39 pm ET

I don't see why all the controversy. So he had an affair. That alone should not be the issue here. The dereliction of duty is what is so glaringly wrong in this case, and this alone should be the reason he steps down. On a personal level, I hate the hipocrasy shown by this man who was such a vocal proponent of impeachment for Clinton's lies during his affair. But once again, Clinton never disappeared during work time. As far as this slimebag answering for his lack of moral fiber well, that's between him and his God.

It's a shame that CNN is forced to take reporters fresh out of middle school. In today's economy plenty of college graduates should be available. One doesn't take a new "tact," one takes a new tack. It refers to a course change for a sailing ship in which the bow crosses the wind and the sails change sides. Conversationally it implies a fresh course, a new way.

Perhaps Steve has just been twittering too much.

Can you imagine if he tries to run for president, gets elected and we have an emergency – and the guy is nowhere to be found because he escaped to be with his "soul mate"?

Someone going through such personal life crisis should not hold any kind of public office.

And if it was one of us "regular citizens" and we did this in a job, how long do you think it would take before we were escorted to the door? It isn't about forgiveness. It is much more than that. Gov Sanford like many of his fellow colleagues feel, they are above the law. They are better than everyone else. I don't know about you all, but that doesn't seem like someone that is representing my best interests.
