WASHINGTON (CNN) - Maine Republican Sen. Susan Collins has joined her fellow GOP Sens. Olympia Snowe, Mel Martinez and Richard Lugar in announcing her intent to support Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor.
The judge "has impressive legal experience, has excelled throughout her life, and is a tremendously accomplished person," Collins said in a statement released Tuesday.
Collins said she knows that she will not agree with every decision Sotomayor will make as a member of the nation's highest court, but adds that she has "concluded that Judge Sotomayor understands the proper rule of a judge and is committed to applying the law impartially without bias or favoritism."
In a nod to the controversy surrounding Sotomayor's "wise Latina" comment, Collins said Tuesday that her "expectation is that Justice Sotomayor will adhere to Justice Sandra Day O'Connor's admonition that "a wise old woman and a wise old man would eventually reach the same conclusion in a case.'"
The Senate Judiciary Committee also decided Tuesday to delay the vote on Sotomayor's nomination for a week.
So, Republicans don't like to spend, huh? How *exactly* did we pay for YOUR war of choice in Iraq? Or do multi-trillion dollar wars not count as "spending".
How does it feel to be a complete hypocrite? You have never been a democrat. Is lying part of the republican membership criteria?
You people couldn't find an honest statement if it were tied to your backsides.
Who cares?? Is CNN going to make a story out of every Republican that supports this woman?? Bore me to tears already!!
ok can we just nominate sonia sotomayor and get it over with...she is going to be nominated no matter how hard the extreme right tries to stop it....so let's not waste anymore tax payer's money on these hearings and nominate her so that she can begin her juduciary work and the senators can go back to their work...
@ Rush L: what is a "real republican"? Susan Collins has common sense and is not controlled by the republicans to vote on one issue to the next. It is a GOOD thing to have your own mind and be your own person depending on the issue. Thanks Senator Collins!
Sometimes I wonder if people are more afraid of Sotomayor because she is Catholic and dialogues with God often.....shame if that is so...that is for your protection that God places people in high power.
She is well qualified...and a gift
another lame duck senator.
Hey Rush L!
There is no such thing as a "real republican." They pretty much disappeared in the 1970's. What the label now represents is hate and obstruction.
But no one ever said what race was the old woman or man!!!
How else are we going to get anything done?
We hired these fine Senators, Mayors, Congress men and women to make these great choices for the American People.
I think Pat Buchanan has lost it. I believe this happened after he professed his love for Sarah Palin and was rejected. I heard his rant on how it was just the White Man that built this country and just the White Man that fought all of our wars. He is becoming as delusional as John McCain.
This is a done issue and there's no reason for the media to keep reporting on it. Judge Sotomayor will be overwhelmingly confirmed by the Senate and will be the next Supreme Court Justice.
This is good. There really was no good reason not to confirm her.
Glad we can get this done and move on to something else.
That's my Senator. Living proof that not all GOPers are the party of "NO". Just their leadership.
PS To Olympia. If Linbaugh and the other National Leaders in your party give you too hard a time I know of another party that would be glad to have you.
I sure wish O'connor was still there. She was a great middle of the road conservative. We need more middle of the road (sane, realistic) judges and politicians.

Thank you, Sen. Snowe! Wish all Republicans were as willing to work for the good of our nation as you are! Perhaps then, this ex-Republican would consider voting for a GOPer again! But….. the GOP continues its obstruction, criticism and to have nothing to offer but the same old tired ideas!
Working for the good of our nation does not always equate to bowing down to only dems or repub ideas! There are good ideas and awful ones in both parties! You are assuming only dem ideas are the best for this country. Bad assumption! Why are you so afraid of a disenting voice? Explain how the GOP is obstructing? The GOP does not have the votes to stop anything without dem support! Yet you keep sounding like a broken record!
No big surprise there. Just wondered what took her so long. She almost always votes with the Democrats anyway.
