At Tuesday morning's weekly GOP conference meeting, Republicans were shown a video parody of the Lady Gaga hit 'Just Dance.'

WASHINGTON (CNN) – Politics may make for strange bedfellows - but even for this town, this may be the oddest couple to ever make beautiful music together: House Republicans...and pop diva Lady Gaga.

At Tuesday morning's weekly GOP conference meeting, Republicans were shown a clip of a video parody of the Lady Gaga hit, "Just Dance" that replaces the popular song's refrain with "Just Tax."

The parody video was developed by Peter Cowman, a 23-year-old who just graduated from the University of Washington in Seattle, outside Rep Dave Reichert's district. A spokeswoman for Reichert said the congressman wanted to show his colleagues the video to encourage them to get young people involved using new media, and noted his district is home to a cluster of technology companies.

"He wanted them to encourage the youth in their district, and share the message on a level that young people can relate to," Reichert's spokeswoman told CNN.

Asked about the video, House Republican Conference Chairman Mike Pence, R-Ind, laughed and said "it's part of the Pence youth initiative."

Pence admitted that very few members were familiar with the original Lady Gaga song.

She's got a lot of work to do. It's hard work to get young people to hate others based on how they look, their names, their heritage.

Most young people are smart and living up to Dr. King's dream. They judge people by the content of their character.

Ahhhh GOPers....they still have a lot ot learn. Thank God for those liberals. They took us from the back of the bus, to the White House. God is good.

    Thank You Liberals, You Rock.

    More lipstick on a pig.

Just because young people can identify the song you just tore apart, does not mean that they will flock in droves to the Republican Party.
Youth today are joining the party, but it is not yours!
This is yet another poorly instructed, and desperate attempt in getting young voters to turn to the Dark Side.

Don't they get it?!?! We prefer our elected officials to work to improve something (anything...there is enough to pick from) and not to engage in childish political stunts. Honestly, this crap and Senator Demint's comments about wanted healthcare reform to fail so the Republicans can take over again clearly shows that the rethugs are not at all interested in serving the American people. They just want power.

I would also like someone from the right to please tell me what a freedom solution to healthcare might look like?!?!

It just about makes me puke how the GOP can come up with all types of creative (Not so original, mind you) ideas to degrade, be-little,
and yet not bring anything fresh and new to the table.

How many ways can they say NO that is yet to be seen.

Young people get it and most american if they will be honest about it know that ( tax breaks to the large and small businesses did not work Bush had continual job loss under most of his time in office .

So where are the the patriots that were to create jobs..... Out raising prices and ripping the american people off as usual.. Stuffing there pockets.

Just curious, is this something that Lady Gaga approved of?

Several recording artists (including Jackson Brown who recently won an apology from McCain and the GOP for misuse of his song "Running on Empty") have have had to go out of their way to emphasize that their songs were used without permission by the GOP, with whom they do NOT with to be associated with,

Not again. The Republicans just don't listen, do they? Voluntarily deaf. I'm getting sick of repeating myself.

The problem is not the method of the message, its the message itself. Do you hear me Republicans? Its not that you didn't use twitter or email. Its not that you didn't have a web site. Its not that you didn't have a pretty face or a cute child in your ad's.

    THE MESSAGE IS THE PROBLEM.

What a great way to get young people involved! Not by volunteering, talking to potential voters, giving ideas to politicians, but by mockery and filler.

If this doesn't say everything about Dave Reichert and the rethuglicans, I don't know what else does. But anyone in Washington knows that Reichert is a tool.

I think if the Republicans want to get the "youth" involved, they need to quit treating youths as idiots by playing the same conservatives games they keep playing and drop the scare tactics, lies and deceit they are accustomed to. Making a video parody won't fool them. The youth just don't like the G "Old" P very much.

Videos, twitter, whatever. The republicans don't need new technology. They need new ideas! They can use all the space-age technology they want but if all they ever do with it is whine about democrats and parrot Cheney and Limbaugh then they'll get nowhere. They need to come up with viable plans. Putting their complaints on video is not a new idea, nor is it a plan.

Ok, this is just cheezy and a feable attempt to target young voters. I'm a young voter and this is actually insulting to know that this parody is supposed to "inspire" me to vote "republican". This is just more of the same and this is why the GOP is in trouble is because of their inability to inspire people and make good of what politics should be.

This is now the party of NO, and they are NEGATIVE without any IDEAS or plan for new leadership.

Instead of "Just Tax", how about doing "Just DUMB".

The GOP was, is and always will be clueless. All they know is "branding", i.e., change the packaging, hope that everyone else is as superficial as they are, etc., etc.

The GOP is morally and intellectually bankrupt. What else explains Palin, Huckabee, Limbaugh, Hannity, Beck, etc., etc., etc.?

  49. Limbaugh is a liberal

Bravo! I'm sure that will fix the budget and the health care crisis. They keep trying to come up with 'clever' mottos to throw at democrats, but they don't offer any alternate plans. Their 'alternate' budget was a 16 page outline with no numbers. NO NUMBERS! In a BUDGET plan! Their 'alternate' health care proposal was a 3 page outline with no cost estimates whatsoever, and 80% of their points were stolen verbatim from Obama's plan. Perhaps when republicans come up with real plans and start doing the job our tax dollars are paying them for we will start listening to them. Until then they deserve to be ignored!

  50. Tony G.

The Republicans are all out of ideas so they come up with this ingenious one? Let's use Lady Gaga to persuade Americans of the lies we want to tell them? Let's tax?......Come on. First, President Obama's plan does not call for taxing health insurance benefits. In fact, only 1% of Americans (the richest) will see their taxes go up a couple of percentage points. In all honesty, they can afford it if it means saving the rest of the country from disaster. Call it a socialist program if you want. I don't care what you call it. We all use socialist services at one time or another. Let's see....police service, fire service, medicaire/medicaid, public transit, public roads, the SCHOOL SYSTEM.....the list goes on and on and I don't see anyone complaining about those social programs. You Republicans need to get over this whole anti-socialist bull crap and open your eyes to the reality. I pay $800 a month for my family's health insurance. That money could go to a new car, new tv, my MORTGAGE, shopping.....it would save the economy. Get over it and get on board.

So they think a parody of a popular female pop artist is going to win over the young crowd? I gotta hand it to GOP innovation, they just keep finding new ways to distance themselves from important voting blocs. So far they've alienated blacks, hispanics, muslims, females, moderate Republicans and Independents, and now our youth. All these comments about Republicans being stupid and idiotic still doesn't take away from the fact that Obama is a socialist and as much as he has tried to pull the wool over the eyes of the Americans (which by the way he apparently has you democrats eating out of his hands) Its the republicans and yes some democrats who recognize that this plan is a huge mistake and would create an even larger deficit that we would NEVER be able to pay back. I'm sorry but I want my children and my childrens children to have a future!!!

Republicans, and the religious zealots who govern the party, are poison for this country. They genuinely hate everyone who disagrees with them, and they use the ballot process to impose their disgusting religion into our private lives.

Lady Gaga should sue the Republican party for using her as a tool in their power hungry quest for absolute control!

Okay, here's the problem with this whole thing. The demographic for Lady Gaga doesn't line up with the krusty old white men's club and I would certainly think the bible pushers must be aghast at this woman's dress and attitude.
Perhaps a little more Barry Manilow or Kenny G, or GOP contemporaries like Beethoven......
But seriously, what does the GOP offer today's youth? Most people under the age of 40 are much more socially tolerant than the GOP generation born just after the turn of the 20th century.
This kinda reminds me of the clip when Karl Rove was dancing all gangsta at a press dinner a few years back, just insanely awkward.

Gotta love all the idiotic responses from Democrats!! Most of the celebrities are Liberals and you don't go tearing them apart. But when one isn't a Liberal you go wild. Kind of like Democrats constantly crying their eyes out about FOX news. The rest of the so called News media are in the tank with Obama and you cry your little eyes out cause one network will give us the facts, yes facts, that we can't find anywhere else. Nothing wrong with hearing both sides to an issue, is there? Don't believe everything those liberal college professors are teaching you. Some day we hope you grow up and can detox from the brainwashing you received in school. Think for yourself, if possible.

As a resident of Reichert's district, I can tell you I'm unsurprised that he and his staff would be dumb enough to use something like this for publicity purposes. He's pathetic, and so is the GOP for trying to scare people out of providing quality, affordable health care for everyone. It can be done and it has to be done. To not do it would jeopardize our economy far more than the current recession. But apparently all Reichert, Pence, and the rest of the GOP are concerned about is their polling numbers and so-called "youth-outreach". Lame.

I love commenters like mazy – "Obama is trying to bankrupt the country with this ridiculous health care plan. "

Oh, yeah, tell me, mazy, and in SPECIFIC detail, what you don't like. How, EXACTLY will it bankrupt the country? What source(s) of funds will it deplete that the country requires to keep running? How will it take money from those funds? Who will oversee the allocation of these funds, and why is that bad?

Chances are you're just like all the other foaming right-wingers on here – you don't know a darn thing about the plan – you just know you're not supposed to like it.

You remind me of that old saying, "It's better to keep your mouth shut and let people think you a fool, than to open it and remove all doubt."

Funny how recent success wipes out liberal memories. The Democratic Party was described as having no ideas or plans for a relevant future as early as three years ago. They were the party of no ideas and dead end politics as recently as the election prior to this one. In fact, they have been in that light since the early 80's and only recently got thier heads out of thier collective posteriers long enough to win an election or two. Let's see, Reagan, Reagan, Bush, Clinton, Clinton, Bush, Bush, Obama . . . That's 12 years of Democrats vs. 20 years of Republicans in the last 32. For the record, I am only 32 years old, so I think the Dems have a little further to go to catch up. With the horrid taxation issues and massive spending in Obama's first several months of office, you can look forward to a return to Republican rule soon.

One by one Obama's policies are failing and you're too hypnotized by his hype to notice. So enjoy your bashing now, because in 3.5 years it's all over and we'll have another decade of Republican rule. There has only been one Democratic President reelected in the last 60 years, and that's the only one who governed from a moderate position. Give me a break. This is rediculous. We should be talking about important things ... like ...

Did you know that the Secretary of Commerce, Gary Locke, is proposing that American consumers pay China's carbon emission offsets?

“It’s important that those who consume the products being made all around the world to the benefit of America — and it’s our own consumption activity that’s causing the emission of greenhouse gases, then quite frankly Americans need to pay for that.”

So let me get this straight – China makes products cheaply (and therefore takes American manufacturing jobs) because it has no organized labor and little to no environmental regulation. The US has organized labor and LOTS of environmental laws that keep us from competing on a level playing field. Locke, the COMMERCE SECRETARY, thinks we should pay China's carbon offset so they can continue to play on an uneven playing field and keep the manufacturing jobs.

This is all just a very, very bad dream...

So, a 23 year old, possibly but not conclusively a staffer, for a Wasington State Representative presents a parody that was probably meant to be an inside joke which again is presented, as encouragement for use of new media at a Republican weekly coneference meeting; and it becomes a national news item? Swell. I'd like to see what passes for good clean fun and humor on the other side of the aisle. I do not believe that Lady Gaga knew of this; and probably no one else would have known of this outside of the representatives office and the conference, but for the journalistic activism of CNN.

Stop and take a look at WHO the democrats are. As a middle class tax paying citizen, I cannot understand how anyone with a job would be a Democrat. It is a well known fact that Democrats are tax and spend, tax and spend. Republicans are the ones who think you should get to keep some of the money you earn. Three weeks after President Bush announced the troop surge which led to success in Iraq, Senator Harry Reid said, and I quote, "the war is lost." Reading some of the comments to this article makes me laugh. A lot of you folks are just blindly following the Liberals way of life even when your money and future are being taken out right under you. Is hating the GOP mean that much? You are supporting this Administration and the Liberal Democrats even when they are taxing you to the poor house. So, has the deficit decrease since "The One" took office? No, it actually increased two fold. Has unemployment lower since he "promised" that the stimulus will create jobs? No, the unemployment rate is at an all time high. Has he ended the Iraq War and closed Gitmo as he "promised"? No, the war is still going strong and Gitmo is nowhere near being closed. All these spending that "The One" and the Democratic Party are doing has to be paid somehow. Wake up! It will be you and me that will pay for it. For all that you say how smart you are, it's pretty dumb to see how eagerly you support those who are forcing you to give up a large portion of what you earn. Pathetic! I doubt this will get posted knowing that CNN is sooo "Fair and Balanced".

Mainly because the younger generation is one that has been taught that family values and hard work are out the door and "Entitlement" and "Socilaism" is in. It just amazes me about the double standards liberals have. When the Obama girl was on the internet day and night, the person with common sense (note- not meant for liberals) did not think she was representing the party. Nor does anyone with a rational mind think that Rush is leading the conservative party (not republican). That's why decisions made by liberal politicians scare the -- out of me, because they never let facts or common sense get in the way of their decision making.

Well doesn't say anything about Lady Gaga being a republican, sounds to me like this kid and the republican used her music and video without permission. Lady Gaga, feel free to sue the pants off them all, that would be really enteraining.

I think it is very wrong for CNN to post a headline that is so misleading that even before I read the story I felt somewhat suspicious. There is nothing in this story that ties the artist Lady Gaga to the republican party. However, by reading someof the post I see that it does not matter to some as some people have jumped to that conclusion. CNN can you please stop the sensationalistic headlines that usually prove to be wrong. Shameful..and yes Walter Cronkite would have been ashamed.

Lady Gaga is NOT a republican and I bet her song "Just Dance" was used without her permission. Just wait until she finds out! Lady Gaga was raised in New York City and has a huge peace sign tattooed to her wrist. She says she got it to remind her about "what matters" and also as a tribute to John Lennon because she grew up near the Dakota apartment building. I can't wait to read the follow-up article where Peter Cowman gets sued. Republicans just don't get it. Bruce Springsteen and Heart didn't want you using their music, and now you will be hearing from Lady Gaga!

For a lot of you commenting, you know that lady gaga isn't actually singing in the video they were shown right? It's some guy in a beater singing, and he made a music video of himself along with a bunch of government and finanacial images. The link to the video is in the article, do your research before you post.

Also at CNN this article is pretty misleading, if I hadn't watched the video I might have made the same assumptions that lady gaga actually sang it. Work on conveying facts.

Her name was mentioned in the same paragraph as the word "Republican" and that is enough for some of you geniuses to wish death upon her. What is going on inside your minds? As far as I'm concerned, today's Republican and Democratic politicians care more about their own ego's than anything else. You Democrats are all a perfect product of the US education (union run) system. The Dumbing down generation has finally learned to use the internet (after all your boy Gore invented it right)

Have you ever lived in another country?

I have a Masters in Accounting, a minor in Economics and I have yet to hear any Democrat defend the deficit figures (compared to GDP) from 1963 – 1970's, remember that WAR – how soon you Liberal Democrats forget!

President Lyndon Johnson sent hundreds of thousands of troops into that conflict and true GDP fell by over a third (not counting war production) the oil embargo hit and the US lost its technological edge forever.

    Dear Friends,
I read this report that "just tax" was substituted for "just dance"at a Republican gathering with wonder. How is it that the anti-tax group seems to hold such sway among some?

What drives the sentiment in face of the recognition that U.S. citizens deserve and need such basics as health care, education, mass transit and more if we are to continue to be the global economic power we think we are? Are we content to let Congress and President's squander our money on defense toys like the F-22 and wars in the name of WMD; their own health care benefits and outrageous sexual exploits while not demanding they step up to providing for the citizens of this country?

Are we going to run ourselves into the ground with "anti-tax" sloganeering while Congress and Presidents throw away our money to benefit Wall Street, Banks, and the military-industrial complex that a good Republican warned against many decades ago? Shall we continue to sign or hymn the tune, "let the rich get richer, while the poor get poorer?"

Are we nuts? Or, just stupid?

It's only a matter of hours before Lady Gaga's reps send a cease and desist order. If these rRepugs knew anything about this woman (e.g., feminist-identified, openly bisexual), they would know that she does not agree with their platform. This is reminiscent of George Will thinking that Springsteen would support Reagan's reelection because the rock-and-roller's "Born in the USA." However, as almost anyone can tell you, this song is a trenchant critique of the American imperialism supported by neo-cons./

The Republicans went on a spending bender for many years, running up the national debt, selling assets to the Chinese, and now are complaining that Obama is trying to stimulate the economy to stop the job losses and keep the economy flowing.

This reminds me of when Regan tried to co-opt Bruce Springsteen's "Born in the USA" for his campaign theme song. This is sooooooo Republican. They are trying to appeal to the lowest common denominator of stupidity by choosing songs and artists for political themes that totally clash with their stated "ideals" knowing full well that their only remaining supporters, (i.e. ignorant, illiterate, racists and ranting senile old white men) won't be capable of reading the lyrics or understanding the world view of the artist. Your healthcare, your defense, your ability to own a home, your ability to get an education, your ability to earn a decent living will all be eclipsed by the taxes exacted on you as the price for some numbskull bureaucrat deciding what you will and will not do with your life, your money, your future, your health! It's almost worth it to stand aside and let Obama shaft every one of you then sit back and laugh while you all gripe about how bad things are. these political blogs are pulling our country apart, it allows people who do not have a clue what they are talking about post on the websites of the mainstream media no matter which one you read it is just a bunch of divisive banter that is mostly untrue! The post by Stephanie you need to do some research before you type again you are so far off that it almost made me fall off my seat. Who cares if they steal a song and change it to what they want it to say. The last time I checked the conservatives would not approve of her music, clothing, or anything that lady gaga does. (or maybe the ride on your disco stick song is about the politicians!)The Liberals need to slow down and take a breath before they push crap through the congress, yes we need the things that they are working but not all in the first 6 months. The conservatives need to come up with some answers and ideas (new ones, that might work).Personally I am sick of all this crap we as a country need to stop arguing and fix the Fri$$en country, WHO CARES WHO COMES UP WITH THE IDEA OR MAKES THE POLICY SO LONG AS IT WORKS AND GETS DONE!!! GAWD, the majority of the dufocrats posting on here as per usual only see what they want to see. They see an attempt by a GOP congressman at getting the young ppl in his district to care about government. They view this as a desperate, last ditch effort and ridicule him as being a day late and a dollar short.

WHAT REALLY happened is some geek fresh out of college, probably a Graphics Design major, without permission most likely, takes a song (cuz he hasnt had an original idea since he was born) changes one word (ooooooh wow) and throws it on the internet. A congressman sees an opportunity to connect with younger voters and jumped on it. 1) Did they get permission, or is this performer going to sue them for libel, slander, and defamation? The GOP just issued an apology for appropriating "Running On Empty".
    2) What a great spokesperson fo the party of the religious right! I bet Robertson et al are SO pleased with this role model.
    3) The republicans deride the democratic party for being attractive to artists and stars, yet hypocritically seize every opportunity to jump on the bandwagon. Pretty slim pickings for them!

This story is misleading. It's title makes it sound like Lady Gaga made this video. I just watched it - it's a "Weird-Al" style parody clearly made by someone else with someone else singing modified lyrics. So how does that make "her" the new youth ambassador? People's comments above clearly show they don't understand this distinction.

Other than that, the video's clever. And contrary to some of the above, I do think this may be an issue where republicans get some traction with young voters - after all we'll be paying these taxes. But they'll have to really change their positioning on other issues to take advantage of these potential gains.

By all means, let's cut taxes again and then the states will get NO federal money, and guess what? When our schools fall apart, our kids are taught in classes of 50 1st graders so they don't learn to read, and our roads and bridges get into worse disrepair, then the STATES can raise taxes. And by the way, while Rethugs are cutting taxes, let's stop funding their idiotic war, their health care, their bloated salaries and benefits, and their pensions. Maybe when they are on a level playing field with the rest of us they will figure out that taxes are not evil in and of themselves. It's what they do with the money that makes it bad. You all realize that Lady GaGa had absolutely nothing to do with this video. A young republican altered and used her video to promote the republican agenda...and a GOP senator/congressman showed it as a recruiting tool. Simple enough. There will likely be a cease-and-desist order on the use of the video shortly. It says all of this in the article. People need to actually read articles before they comment.

Clearly, if there was any doubt as to the decayed and impotent state of the Republican Party, this story should rid everyone's minds of that doubt. The irony of the story – and the action – is the unlikely possibility of ANY GOP'ers actually ever having heard of this poor, unfortunate soul.

The problem with health care is that it has not been a priority in years past. Now that we realize this is the number one issue that needs to be addressed, as expressed by many financial minds, not just Democrats, it's going to cost us big time. But what would the cost be if it's not taken care of? Why are we so far behind other countries when it comes to taking care of our own? The fact that Farrah Fawcett had to go to Germany to get cancer treatment should speak volumes of our falling behind. She herself questioned why our country doesn't have the technology other countries do when it comes to healcare. The answer, if a cure is found, where would the healthcare industry and drug companies get their money? The money is not in the cure, it's in the treatment. When was the last time there was a cure for anything? Lastly, people speak as if a government run program is the end of the world. Well, our post office is a government run agency and for the mere cost of a stamp, we get excellent service in comparison to other countries. Our police & fire departments are government run. Why not give health care a chance and stop bickering about nonsense.

I know it's hard when you have to spend so much time memorizing Obama's talking points, but there is a whole reality out there that has nothing to do with what Obama says. Speaking of numbers, you forgot to mention that the GAO looked at Obama's and found his projected healthcare savings overestimated and costs understated. So Braniac, how will he pay fot it? Did any of you actually read the article? It's not about Lady Gaga at all. No where in the article does it say that she is a republican, or supports the values of the GOP. Who knows why CNN used a picture of her as art for the piece. The article was about young Republicans using the song as a parody to establish a point. It really doesn't have anything to do with Lady Gaga the Artist. I recommend reading the whole article and clicking on the link to better understand the point, rather than focusing on the picture and making crazy, bombastic judgments about CNN or the GOP.

It would have been more appropriate for the Republican Party to have changed the song to "Just Dense" and to use it as their party platform. The GOP is devoid of any new thoughts, and attacking taxes every time a Democrat gets in office no longer works. The only reason Obama won so strongly in the last election is because the Bush administration so royally screwed things up over the last 8 years. It's obvious to all except dyed in the wool Republicans that their policies haven't worked, yet they can't come up with a new approach. News to the Republicans – you won't get reelected by ignoring the economy, pushing the country into endless, unnecessary wars, spending wastefully, wreaking havoc with US foreign policy, and all the while carrying a pompous, holier than thou attitude. The video itself is a bit lame, and it's kind of sad that the GOP is still not in tune (so to speak) with the "youth" of the country. Personally, I love Lady Gaga – and actually find it kind of ironic that they would choose a song originally about being drunk at a club – but that's fine.

I think what people need to stop doing is pitting Republicans against Democrats (neither can walk away without blood on their hands) but realize what's happening to our country! We got ourselves into a hole (yes, government and loaners helped, but we did alot of this to ourselves – spending money that we don't have...buying large homes that we can't afford...maxing credit cards...etc.) President Obama made some large promises, too grand for reality, and what sounds like something that is going to help us (i.e., stimulus package) is actually putting us in a bigger hole. That isn't free money. It's gotta come from somewhere. Us. Our kids. Our grandkids. We'll be paying off the existing debt plus the debt incurred from all the "new" spending.

When are you people going to realize that ALL politicians are in DC for themselves only? None of them care about the good of the country, they only care about being re-elected and getting campaign donations, because they've realized that their actions don't determine how we vote, it's how much money they spend and how much pork they bring home.

Our system is broken because they all realized that they can buy our votes with our own tax dollars.

Ah, those grumpy white old men of the GOP. They are so hip and full of new ways to meet the demands of the new world economy. Drive the country into a ditch and then stand back and complain about those who are trying to get the country out of the ditch they drove into. Shameful.
