GOP's new youth ambassador: Lady Gaga?

WASHINGTON (CNN) – Politics may make for strange bedfellows - but even for this town, this may be the oddest couple to ever make beautiful music together: House Republicans...and pop diva Lady Gaga.

At Tuesday morning's weekly GOP conference meeting, Republicans were shown a clip of a video parody of the Lady Gaga hit, "Just Dance" that replaces the popular song's refrain with "Just Tax."

The parody video was developed by Peter Cowman, a 23-year-old who just graduated from the University of Washington in Seattle, outside Rep Dave Reichert's district. A spokeswoman for Reichert said the congressman wanted to show his colleagues the video to encourage them to get young people involved using new media, and noted his district is home to a cluster of technology companies.

"He wanted them to encourage the youth in their district, and share the message on a level that young people can relate to," Reichert's spokeswoman told CNN.

Asked about the video, House Republican Conference Chairman Mike Pence, R-Ind, laughed and said "it's part of the Pence youth initiative."

Pence admitted that very few members were familiar with the original Lady Gaga song.

Three weeks after President Bush announced the troop surge which led to success in Iraq, Senator Harry Reid said, and I quote, "the war is lost." During that time, they called Bush a liar, a war criminal and refused to work with him on anything. Now, these same people have the audacity to call the Republicans the "party of no." Very short memories for very simple minded people.

Not surprisingly! Palin, Limbaugh, Joe the plumber, and now Gaga? Who's next in the sterile, desperate quest for a "conservative" republican leading figure? Never thought the mess would hit this party so tragically. But you know what, I am grateful for that and hope this descent goes on to we know where till we never hear of them again...

Reading some of the comments to this article makes me laugh. A lot of you folks are just blindly following the Liberals way of life even when your money and future are being taken out right under you. Is hating the GOP mean that much? You are supporting this Administration and the Liberal Democrats even when they are taxing you to the poor house. So, has the deficit decrease since "The One" took office? No, it actually increased two fold. Has unemployment lower since he "promised" that the stimulus will create jobs? No, the unemployment rate is at an all time high. Has he ended the Iraq War and closed Gitmo as he "promised"? No, the war is still going strong and Gitmo is nowhere near being closed. All these spending that "The One" and the Democratic Party are doing has to be paid somehow. Wake up! It will be you and me that will pay for it. For all that you say how smart you are, it's pretty dumb to see how eagerly you support those who are forcing you to give up a large portion of what you earn. Pathetic! I doubt this will get posted knowing that CNN is sooo "Fair and Balanced".

This would imply that Republicans are pushing for lower taxes... ha, I just spit up my food...

As usual, Republicans can't create anything of their own... they just try to take something someone else wrote and tag an unfunny, weak "joke" onto it. Republicans are truly the low end of our nation's learning curve.

    @Skip
It's a bit ironic that you would say that Republicans are the party of hatred. What one word would you use to describe the way you feel about Republicans? Take a look in the mirror...

I've seen better Obamaparodies, but I've seen worse.

But why is a Congressman trying to use this video as some sort of youth rallying cry.

    I have a rallying cry...PRESENT YOUR IDEAS!!

Stop being the party of "NO" and be the party of "I HAVE AN ALTERNATIVE."

Hey Cal – get a life! Do you live under a rock? My kids all like dance music and are very conservative Republicans. Maybe you should get out more. And by the way – Republicans do know how to have fun and you don't have to break the 10 Commandments to do it. Lady Gaga has some bad lyrics but some stations cut them out and the music is pretty good.

Why do republicans fully support money spent on war and rebuilding Iraq (including 950 million for IRaq health care alone that bush pushed through) yet oppose spending money on Americans in America? Republicans would fully support their right to carry a gun yet oppose health care.

Hey CAL, he's using her song (which relates to young people) to send a message about politics and get young people involved. Lady Gaga is a very outspoken artist but she's also an activist. If you don't know abou the subject maybe you shouldn't comment.

  12. Seriously now

People, calm down. It's a parody video. The CNN title is misleading. Lady Gaga has nothing to do with the video. Republicans used it because it's simplistic and they assumed young people would relate. It's fairly laughable.

The difference is not in which party taxes. The difference is in how that money is spent. I have major problems with both party's philosophies on tax spending, but at least the Democrats don't use taxpayer money to start illegal wars.

Maybe they can do some snappy word-revisions to her song about taking a ride on your ..... or maybe the Dems can do that so the country GETS IT that the Republicans DID this to them and true to form, when the going gets tough they whine and pout.

Yet another misleading headline by CNN. Lady Gaga did NOT make this video, it was edited by a Republican college student.

Being from Washington State, I'm surprised he wasn't ran out of town. When the GOP puts their heads together, they really put together a strong argument. NOT.

Unfortunately the group that the GOP is having trouble getting support from are the younger voters. Mainly because the younger generation is one that has been taught that family values and hard work are out the door and "Entitlement" and "Socilaism" is in. They are "entitled" to free healthcare, they are "entitled" to the same size house as a millionaire all by sitting on thier lazy butt.

Keep your hands out of other people's pockets needs to be the message.

Socialism is great until you run out of other people's money.

The party of old white guys from the south just doesn't get it. In order to be successful the only thing that matters are ideas that will help the American people, not gimmicks.

I guess if you have no ideas or are not interested in helping the American people all you have are gimmicks and lame strategies, such as blocking healthcare reform.

Gee, this is a big surprise. SInce the red states are those which most often frequent porn sites, I'm surprised that they don't just select a porn star as their next candidate. As Palin so aptly demonstrates, the all-flash-and-no-substance republicans are nothing but a media-hype creation anyway. The only thing keeping them alive is the press. Thanks for nothing CNN.
