GOP's new youth ambassador: Lady Gaga?

WASHINGTON (CNN) – Politics may make for strange bedfellows - but even for this town, this may be the oddest couple to ever make beautiful music together: House Republicans...and pop diva Lady Gaga.

At Tuesday morning's weekly GOP conference meeting, Republicans were shown a clip of a video parody of the Lady Gaga hit, "Just Dance" that replaces the popular song's refrain with "Just Tax."

The parody video was developed by Peter Cowman, a 23-year-old who just graduated from the University of Washington in Seattle, outside Rep Dave Reichert's district. A spokeswoman for Reichert said the congressman wanted to show his colleagues the video to encourage them to get young people involved using new media, and noted his district is home to a cluster of technology companies.

"He wanted them to encourage the youth in their district, and share the message on a level that young people can relate to," Reichert's spokeswoman told CNN.

Asked about the video, House Republican Conference Chairman Mike Pence, R-Ind, laughed and said "it's part of the Pence youth initiative."

Pence admitted that very few members were familiar with the original Lady Gaga song.

Who would of thought Lady Gaga would be a Republican learning tool.

It's only a matter of hours before Lady Gaga's reps send a cease and desist order. If these rRepugs knew anything about this woman (e.g., feminist-identified, openly bisexual), they would know that she does not agree with their platform. This is reminiscent of George Will thinking that Springsteen would support Reagan's reelection because the rock-and-roller's "Born in the USA." However, as almost anyone can tell you, this song is a trenchant critique of the American imperialism supported by neo-cons./

God, the liberal hate machine is spewing forth on this! The TRUE party of hate, intolerance, and bigotry.... the dems. They want nothing more than to keep the uninformed poor man down...so they can maintain their voting constituency. Just tax! That's their only answer.

Oh, how embarassing. I live in Congressman Reichert's district, and I am embarassed for him. His belief that showing an inane Lady Gaga video will encourage more participation among young voters is not only out of touch, but I believe insulting to those younger voters. Whatever happened to engaging people with compelling debates on real issues involving real people?

Love the misleading title of this story. Lady Gaga had nothing to do with the video.

    To Stephanie:
The Republicans went on a spending bender for many years, running up the national debt, selling assets to the Chinese, and now are complaining that Obama is trying to stimulate the economy to stop the job losses and keep the economy flowing.
This is the same as an acquaintance taking your credit card, spending tons of money on your account, wrecking your car and then yelling at you for taking a cab to work where you can make the money to pay your debt back as the acquaintance sleeps off his hangover.

Hey 'square' republicans, try reading the article first before you do a victory lap thinking you finally have some pop culture star to go after Obama with. The video shown was a PARODY by a UW graduate, and doesn't have any kind of endorsement from Lady Gaga. Figure it out!

    Next headline will read:

"Entertain Industry, led by Heart and Lady Gaga, filing class action lawsuit against the Republican Party for copyright infringement. Artists unite to stop groups from using their material without permission."

Didn't republicans get their boxers in a twist over President Obama being a "celebrity" – then they trotted out Sarah Palin (wink, wink) and now Lady gaga???? How about trying to govern for a change??

This reminds me of when Regan tried to co-opt Bruce Springsteen's "Born in the USA" for his campaign theme song. This is sooooooo Republican. They are trying to appeal to the lowest common denominator of stupidity by choosing songs and artists for political themes that totally clash with their stated "ideals" knowing full well that their only remaining supporters, (i.e. ignorant, illiterate, racists and ranting senile old white men) won't be capable of reading the lyrics or understanding the world view of the artist. The next part of this story will be hillarious when dancefloor Diva and gay icon, Lady Gaga has her say.

Does Lady GaGa know she's being used in this way? She's a supporter of gay and lesbian rights. Does she know how the GOP thinks gays and lesbians should be treated.

  17. Confused

This entire news story is misleading.
Someone edited a video to parody a Lady Gaga song.
Lady Gaga is in no way, shape, or form, endorsing the GOP.
Remember when several bands protested McCain/Palin's usage of songs during the campaign?
    Using a song =/= support.

Also, anyone who thinks any relevant argument will ever occur in CNN comments is delusional. Crazies abound.

The young people of today are more educated about issues that matter in all of our lives. i'm informing the GOP now that you clowns don't have a chance with the young people. The strenth of the Democratic youth will once again crush the GOP in all Presidential elections in the near future. We have had enough of the RIDICULOUS GOP Party.

i'm just wondering if they got permission to use the song from lady gaga.
i doubt if she would grant it.
now, to use this song to promote republican rhetoric – plain stupid.
do these people have any resemblance of a working brain?
    doubtful.

To all those who bash the Republicans, I suggest you think about this: they are all that's standing between you and complete socialism of every aspect of your lives!!! Your healthcare, your defense, your ability to own a home, your ability to get an education, your ability to earn a decent living will all be eclipsed by the taxes exacted on you as the price for some numbskull bureaucrat deciding what you will and will not do with your life, your money, your future, your health! It's almost worth it to stand aside and let Obama shaft every one of you then sit back and laugh while you all gripe about how bad things are. Like someone once said about socialism......sooner or later, you run out of other people's money to spend.

these political blogs are pulling our country apart, it allows people who do not have a clue what they are talking about post on the websites of the mainstream media no matter which one you read it is just a bunch of divisive banter that is mostly untrue! The post by Stephanie you need to do some research before you type again you are so far off that it almost made me fall off my seat. Who cares if they steal a song and change it to what they want it to say. The last time I checked the conservatives would not approve of her music, clothing, or anything that lady gaga does. (or maybe the ride on your disco stick song is about the politicians!)The Liberals need to slow down and take a breath before they push crap through the congress, yes we need the things that they are working but not all in the first 6 months. The conservatives need to come up with some answers and ideas (new ones, that might work).Personally I am sick of all this crap we as a country need to stop arguing and fix the Fri$$en country, WHO CARES WHO COMES UP WITH THE IDEA OR MAKES THE POLICY SO LONG AS IT WORKS AND GETS DONE!!! So maybe just maybe people should take blogs for what they are BLOGS.

Thank you for making decisions based on what politicians REALLY did or didn't say and what they REALLY did or didn't do. Dem/libs want to blame Bush for everything that's happened in the last 2 plus years but they don't seem to be aware THEY have been in charge for the past 2 plus years !! THANKS DEM/LIBS!!! I can't tell you how much I worry about the next 3 1/2 years!!! We're screwed !!!!!
