President Obama responded to criticism of his jeans with a simple explanation: 'Those jeans are comfortable.'

WASHINGTON (CNN) – Sometimes even one of the most powerful men in the world has to answer to the fashion police.

President Barack Obama found himself in just that situation in an interview that aired Tuesday on NBC.

Asked about criticism of the jeans he wore recently when he threw out the first pitch last week at the Major League Baseball All-Star game, Obama didn't make any excuses.

"Michelle – she looks fabulous," the president said of his wife who has increasingly become a global fashion super star since Election Day.

"I'm a little frumpy," Obama said of himself by comparison.

The president also offered some insights into his self-admitted lack of sartorial expertise.

"Up until a few years ago, I only had four suits," the commander-in-chief said.

"I hate to shop. Those jeans are comfortable. And for those of you who want your president to look great in his tight jeans, I'm sorry. I'm not the guy," Obama added.

Obama's jeans choice for his all-star game appearance were widely panned by fashion critics and even dubbed "mom jeans."

jaye   July 21st, 2009 12:38 pm ET

I think our president is beautiful no matter what he wears.
So, why the big deal on his baseball clothes? Who really cares what he wears long as it isn't a speedo. LOL

From North – South and East – West, less not worry about the President dress but from House to the Senate and the President Desk lets vote for Healthcare so all can rest.

God Bless our NATION !

CJ   July 21st, 2009 12:38 pm ET

I did not even notice what he was wearing....some people have a whole lot of time to do nothing but be critical , but come on be critical of policies , something that makes sense....this is past riduculous.

Personally I think he always looks well put together, he wears clothes well . I think he is doing a great job of representing our country to the world by his attire and by his intelligence.

Independent for Obama   July 21st, 2009 12:37 pm ET

He is kind of skinny and geeky in a Jimmy Walker kind-of-way.

Jonathan Burton   July 21st, 2009 12:36 pm ET

I am not really that interested in my President's fashion sense.
More so I am interested in whether he is paying attention to the needs of the country.
For that I think that he is doing just fine.

John   July 21st, 2009 12:35 pm ET

Ok..they were a bit short in the inseam, but dang Mr. President does have some booty on him....first time I've ever EVER wanted to watch an American president walk away so I can check out his backside. Gotta love Obama for a gazillion reasons; this is just one more!! Go OBAMA!

Osama B Laden   July 21st, 2009 12:34 pm ET

Worse than his clothes... he throws like a young taliban girl.

I saw on Al-Jazera TV he couldn't get the ball to the white plate. This is your powerful leader??

I laugh loudly.

-Sorry Anne, he wants you to believe he is "one of us". NO politician is "one of us". They are all greedy liars. They are all elitests. Don't be fooled.

Everyone needs to take a step back and realize that ALL politicians don't have our best interests in mind. They have only their's. It is a survival mentality and the only way to survive is to pander to special interests and the Washington subculture.

Something needs to be done about ths. Elections are not working.

Shirley C   July 21st, 2009 12:32 pm ET

I am a Canadian. So impressed with your president. I too think he's so down to earth but he has things on the ball when he's at work. He would of looked so stupid if he wore a suit to a baseball game. :( . You have one of the grestest guys in office .. support him, give him your prayers and his family, stop brow beating him

Joseph, Los Angeles   July 21st, 2009 12:32 pm ET

Finally we have a President, again, who cares about we American people. I am taken aback when I see, hear, and read, all the negativity thrown at him. I hope this country does not follow the Limbaugh Doctrine; wanting this president to "fail." It seems that a lot of Americans have gotten on that band-wagon, again... like we were bambozeled to do for 8 years. Wake up America; you are falling asleep again... we are responding to the jeans a president is wearing. How petty as a country we have become? Very petty.

Chai-wallah   July 21st, 2009 12:30 pm ET

Who cares what he wears; he is a man and that does not mean he should show and wear the latest fashion.

Anyone who does not like what I wear is too bad; it's my choice. Don't like it? look some where else.

Kelly Schmidt   July 21st, 2009 12:30 pm ET

I have no problem with the jeans. Do people want him to wear skin tight jeans? I think not. I do have a problem with the SOX jacket. He came to STL and should have supported the Cards, wore and All Star shirt, or not have supported any team at all.

The problem that I do have was the way he snatched the ball out of Stan the Man's hand. That man is one of baseball greatest players and should have been treated better than that. It was Obama just didn't care.

Kimberly   July 21st, 2009 12:29 pm ET

Steve   July 21st, 2009 12:28 pm ET

Who cares what he's wearing!? Does it really matter after he finishes bankrupting and destroying our country?

Eliza   July 21st, 2009 12:27 pm ET

To Applelyn, PA:

MIchelle DOES use American-based designers and shops at stores like J. Crew, etc.–all American.

Maybe that is the problem. The perception in our stores is that ALL women WANT to wear bows, flowers, frou-frou and cartoon characters.

Gina   July 21st, 2009 12:27 pm ET

Are you kidding me? There are more important issues in our society which requires attention (i.e. the economy, unemployment, housing crisis, hunger, healthcare,) other than the President's jeans....

C W   July 21st, 2009 12:27 pm ET

I always do a better job when I'm dressed comfortably. Keep up the good work, Mr. President – I think you always look fine!

PJ   July 21st, 2009 12:26 pm ET

Comment on what the Obama does as a President and not on what he wears. Why would his jeans matter so much? We did the same thing to President Clinton about his affair and as a result lost track of Bin Ladin. Clinton was very close to getting the rascal, but the media created too much distraction to an otherwise perfect President. Do we not learn from our mistakes? Leave the Prez alone for ittly bittly matters and let him do his JOB!

Rick McDaniel   July 21st, 2009 12:25 pm ET

Jeans are jeans. Some people may consider them a "fashion" article of clothing, but to me, I agree with Obama......you wear jeans to be comfortably active......not make a fashion statement.

Just goes to show, how petty people can be, about what others do. The most "to do....about nothing", yet, on the Obamas.

Mission Accomplished   July 21st, 2009 12:24 pm ET

The wingnuts probably would have been happier if he'd worn a commander codpiece flight suit to throw out the first pitch.

Ryan, Denver   July 21st, 2009 12:23 pm ET

President Obama is a real every man's man. He doesn't pretend to be anything he's not, like say... a cowboy.

Anonymous   July 21st, 2009 12:23 pm ET

omg hes wereing jeans! gaspp!!!!! who cares!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! hes a person 2!!!!!!!

littlerotten   July 21st, 2009 12:21 pm ET

I agree with him completely... They're jeans!! They don't need to be a fashion statement for throwing out a first pitch. If that were the case, baseball players would have all kinds of designer pocket-low riding boot cut-sliding pants that would defeat their purpose... Please people... (besides, I don't believe men should be wearing tight little jeans... that's just too metro sexual for me... men should look rugged, not trendy... can you picture a 'Marlboro man' wearing tight girlie jeans?!)

Carla   July 21st, 2009 12:21 pm ET

Just think, President Obama passes on the $100 pair of jeans...he probably saved the money he needs to pay his "share" of the increased costs of health care. How tragic.

Akin   July 21st, 2009 12:21 pm ET

The president should be allowed to relax after all those repbulican bashing afterall is human being. He is doing great job so far but can improve on his throwing capability next time.

Vicky   July 21st, 2009 12:21 pm ET

President Obama is the real deal! I am so grateful and relieved to have a competent, well-rounded, hard-working President leading our country. As for the jeans, they're perfect too!

Sam I Am   July 21st, 2009 12:19 pm ET

I don't know about anyone else, but in my opinion, he's the President of the United States. He SHOULD be a little frumpy. I'm not sure how much credence I'd give to a fashion fop. Michelle really, really has to get rid of those pants, though. They go beyond frumpy to completely dorky. And Mr. Obama? With all due respect? Stay away from baseball pitcher's mounds. Maybe we can start a new tradition of making the first basket at the beginning of basketball season. You're MUCH better at that!!

T22   July 21st, 2009 12:19 pm ET

I was at the All Star game and I'm not a big Obama fan, but it's always exciting to see the President. I really didn't notice anything wrong with what he was wearing, I'm sure he wanted to be comfortable and was probably more worried about getting the pitch right than the jeans he was wearing!

Anonymous   July 21st, 2009 12:18 pm ET

OH MY GOSH.....THE WORLD IS COMING TO AN END...Our President wears comfortable jeans without any regard for fashion!!! Whatever can we do?

Terri   July 21st, 2009 12:17 pm ET

Nothing wrong with his jeans. Fashion critics need to get a clue.

AntiRush   July 21st, 2009 12:17 pm ET

Unfortunately, there are alot of people in this country who are more interested in what a person wears, rather than being interested in what that person thinks.

Tim   July 21st, 2009 12:16 pm ET

We live in a world where there are much more important issues at hand, and this man is watched on everything he does. I'm not a big fan of him and how he has handled things, but what the President is wearing to throw out a first pitch at a baseball game is of very little significance. If he wants to wear them, let him wear them and leave him alone. Fashion critics are not really ones to talk. Their decisions don't affect our country. His do!

Steph   July 21st, 2009 12:15 pm ET

He can wear whatever he wants while he fights to get healthcare reform done (along with everything else he is doing for us). He is an amazing president with a great sense of humor.

Margo   July 21st, 2009 12:15 pm ET

To all those curmudgeons complaining that "this is not news", give me a freakin' break! Every time one of your presidents throws out the first pitch at a baseball game, the event makes the news.

Difference being, this president looks like the well-toned athlete he is – a man of many competencies. You should all consider yourselves lucky to have him, saving your sorry Rebublican asses.

Applelyn, PA   July 21st, 2009 12:13 pm ET

The president can wear whatever he wants. He was enjoying himself at a baseball game. End of story.

Oh, and Michelle never looks fabulous. She wears too many "baubles”, flowers, bows, buttons-she needs to edit herself or find an American designer.

I still like Michelle, no matter how she dresses. She has a good heart and she’s a wonderful first lady.

Annette   July 21st, 2009 12:11 pm ET

Usually your personal spending equates to your discipline with money management. I take this as a sign, that he only spends when necessary and if his choice of putting on a pair of old jeans vs buying a pair for the occassion is a indication of his discipline for spending, then I think we are definitely in good hands with him as President. I think the President is showing that he is a good steward with his finances and hopefully that translates in him being a good steward over tax payers money.

A lot of talk about the spending of this administration, remember it's how you spend, the money spent for the so call Iraq war, was to me a waste, in the end this government had to give back what did not belong to them. If the American people want to get upset over spending, get very upset about that. The Iraq conflict was a total waste of taxpayers money, now, who will account for that. I personally feel that the conflict in Iraq was a personal moviatation that had nothing to do with the war on terror.

Thomas   July 21st, 2009 12:10 pm ET

I don't much care for a lot of his politics but I do like his candor. He's not UP TIGHT and that's why most people like him.

...and then there's the part that he tells you what he thinks. I don't always agree w/ him but you have to respect that.

All the Obama-haters ever say is "he is talking to much and is in the news constantly campaigning to get his agenda passed" and then they say, "why isn't he paying attention to the issues and not his image and why isn't he more transparent"? His continuous news conferences are for that very purpose – transparency. He wants to keep the American public, for whom he works, in the know and up-to-date on what his plans are to get us out of the numerous messes that Bush left us. You really need to make the distinction between staying informed and being left out of the loop. Come on people. What do you want? It's one or the other. By the way, Bush wore jeans a lot in public, especially when he was down in Crawford, TX, (like almost constantly) or Camp David. No one commented on how he looked in jeans. Such hypocrisy.

Alright, you anti-Obamabots out there and Republicans, we get it already: you don't like President Barack Obama, you don't like his policies, you don't like Democrats, you don't like anything that isn't done the way you would do it, and you don't like religions that aren't like yours.

To all Republicans and Anti-Obamabots out there, the question is this: Where was your indignation when George Bush was president for 8 years and was running this country into the ground? Where was your indignation when Republicans controlled Congress for 12 years and ran this country into the ground?

Barack Obama's jeans really don't matter. The way he throws a ball doesn't matter. What matters is the work he's doing in the office and the mess he was elected to fix. Stop the complaining.

Aunt Bea and Opie   July 21st, 2009 12:02 pm ET

Most of us are more concerned about why the unemployment rate has shot up to close to 10%, even though he Pledged it would not go above 8% if the $800b stimulus package was passed. Most of us are more concerned about how President Obama wants to add $1.2t to the budget with the new healthcare plan, this added on to the already close to $10t debt that we as a country have accumulated and he has no idea how we will pay for it. Most of us are more concerned about how many more jobs will be lost with the cap and trade. Most of us are concerned about the stimulus spending report that came out, showing the absolute waste.

We are NOT, by any means, concerned about the jeans the man is wearing.

Rick CT   July 21st, 2009 11:48 am ET

I may have issues with Obama (like his continued emphasis on getting things done fast as opposed to done right – witness the Gitmo folly, the lack of stimulus, the broken promise earmarks on the spending bill, his authorization of AIG bonuses, the ability to carry concealed weapons in National Parks, his continued overtures to the illegit Prez of Iran, and now rushing health care), but his choice of jeans is not one of them.

cevans, tx   July 21st, 2009 11:48 am ET

Thank God he's not shallow or vain, unlike the vast majority of the prudents in America.

And, for you save america, you're the dog and the liar...I guess you wanted Bush's healthcare bill...Did he have one! I guess that is why millions of Americans are without healthcare!!

Love your style Mr. President, in more ways than one!!

I am more interested in his mind than what he wears. Consider what McCain would have been wearing – since he was the alternative. I can't recall a President who looked like a jock when he threw out a ball and I have watched many throws those balls across the plate – hopefully. Some of you people need to get a life. It would also help if you studied what the Republicans put him up against and then you would be happy that he simply took time to go throw a ball.

As for the negative comments - you know, he's not a natural-born citizen, etc, ad nauseum - give it up. Don't you think that with all the money the corporate libertarians have socked away from raping this country's economy that they would have ALREADY found "THE TRUTH" you guys keeping trying to sell with that phoney baloney internet story?

I think i'm going to run for office and my entire campaign is going to be based on being able to throw a baseball and football better than my opponent and drink him or her under the table while publicly bench pressing more than my body weight. Also I will punt a math book like a football and square dance to "Aint that America" by John Mellencamp while I chow down on char grilled hamburger with Herr's Potato chips and a mug of beer.

I will than make sure i'm caught on camera at my local church praying and then I will dance to more John Mellencamp, maybe Toby Keith as well. My wife will be complacent, beautiful, and only dress in designer clothes and her opinions on anything will be limited to how great I am and how fulfilling motherhood and supporting her husband is. I'll also drive a Ford Truck to every single one of my campaign rallies. I would win this election and I wouldn't even have to reveal my stance on any political issue at all.

In the immorttal words of another Democrat: IT'S THE ECONOMY, STUPID!!

-------------------------

Great to revisit the past. Yea...Clinton said this to daddy Bush, and Clinton then turn the economy around. Now again we have economic troubles, interestingly after another Bush was President (remember how little Bush told us all that the economy was stable)
Got to hand it to the Bushes, they really kniow how to leave things all messed up for the next guy!

So I guess you're saying that Obama has failed because he hasn't been able to clean up another Bush economy in 6 months?
Interesting and a bit short sighted.

rachel   July 21st, 2009 11:37 am ET

This is silly reporting I am not a big Obama fan. The only thing I will say bout the jeans were that they were a bit short but who cares, no matter how they looked I am sure they cost a pretty penny.

walleye   July 21st, 2009 11:37 am ET

It wouldnt matter what he wore. Someone would complain. Maybe next time shorts would be in order.

Adult   July 21st, 2009 11:36 am ET

The only decision he had made so far that I agree with. All the jeans companies are shortening the rise on their jeans and as an ADULT male I have to say that I don't find having the waist band of my jeans riding below my pelvis particularly comfortable. Here we are in a society that is increasingly overweight and the clothes manufacturers are forcing the person with an average build to wear clothes that barely look good on those with hard, toned, young bodies. It is ridiculous. This will probably be the only time I say this bur Hurrah for Barrack!! Bring back my adult jeans. Levis "traditional" fit jeans are anything but. The zipper on the last pair I bought was about 2 inches shorter than the previous pair of the same style. They went straight back to the store.

i heart obama

Denise in Eugene, OR   July 21st, 2009 11:35 am ET

Obama doesn't need to make a fashion statement – he's already made a statement about being an amazing President who's making a difference in foreign policy and on the economic front and will soon make more history by succeeding in his quest for universal health care.

He's brilliant and getting things done like no other president in my lifetime.

We are incredibly lucky to have this man as our President – just when we so desperately need him.

christopher   July 21st, 2009 11:34 am ET

i'm glad all of those who love obama thinks he's a cute lil guy with his nice lil wifey in the white house. We treat them like they are celebrities in every way. Yet they are politicians. He's the president people! who care what jeans he wears!!!! i find it so amazing the same ppl who bashed Bush....are the same people who love to make remarks on the Obama's fashion sense! goes to show where you people's priorities are in life

hard to believe   July 21st, 2009 11:33 am ET

Hugo Castrobama – you are so far out in left field you wouldn't know what country your are in. If he's not a citizen, you aren't either. You must be one of those that believe we didn't land on the moom.

Again – hard to believe some of these comments. And what the heck are "mom" jeans? It used to be the women wore men's jeans because there were no women's jeans. Jeans are jeans – they come in all sizes and all shapes (including rags, holes and bleached) and they change according to the same people that are ragging on the president. Kudos to him for not caring what his jeans are as long as they are comfy. The sloppiness of the average American wearing next to nothing or gunny sacks would better serve comment.

single mom   July 21st, 2009 11:33 am ET

Oh, for heaven's sake! He was at a BASEBALL game! What do you expect him to wear? A tuxedo?

Next important topic to discuss?

dominican mama 4 Obama   July 21st, 2009 11:33 am ET

Mr. President, when you get a chance to take off the suit, make sure you're comfortable. If that means baggy jeans, who cares! You look great because you're comfortable in your own skin. Clothes don't make the man. You have charisma, good looks and charm, you can't buy those at the store.

I love my President!!

cheer up Ed   July 21st, 2009 11:32 am ET

I think he throws like TCM, or what ever names shes using today.hahaha

Yvette   July 21st, 2009 11:32 am ET

Kudos to Mr. President. It shows that he is human too and he's not afraid to hang out with us regular people at ball games, etc. While he does have business to attend to, we all do, we need to laugh and have a little fun often. This has been proven to make people more productive.

Maybe if Bush hung out with us, he wouldn't have gotten such a bad rap.

Randolph Carter   July 21st, 2009 11:32 am ET

Nice Sox jacket, though. Have a nice day!

addon   July 21st, 2009 11:30 am ET

Yeah haters......criticize the president for everything he's doing. Your lives must be miserable smelly sacks of regurgitated "ring wing" talking points. If you had a moment to consider that this man is trying to clean up a mess that would have brought us the GREAT DEPRESSION "Part duex" – then you would be more appreciative. Then again hating "...all things Obama" is the reason for your pathetic existence. Sad group of so called americans!

Purple Alaska   July 21st, 2009 11:30 am ET

...but you're still lookin' good, Mr. President ~ and doing a fine job, might I add! Be encouraged to continue ~ even in the faces of naysayers...

We appreciate you, in all of your "frumpiness."

:)

Vince   July 21st, 2009 11:29 am ET

This seems rather obvious, but to all those exclaiming "why is this news?", I have a question for you; why are you reading and commenting? The headline and picture make it pretty clear what this is about. Do you have such little to do with your day that you HAVE to read and comment on things that you feel are not worthwhile?
It's only news if you read it.

He doesn't know that you're supposed to put your foot against the front of the rubber (the white thing on the mound), not stand on it! And he throws like a sissy, not a girl, since my daughters can all throw very well, thank you. If you look at any of their joint interviews together, Michelle is always expressing the masculine energy, and he's always coming in with some femininity to soften whatever she says. Very interesting dynamic.

yuri   July 21st, 2009 11:27 am ET

BHO looked very frail and fragile, so much, that his pitchin' style was noticeably effeminate. We strongly recommend that BHO pump some iron and bulk up, before being ridiculed by the GOP as a physically weak Prez.

Mike b   July 21st, 2009 11:26 am ET

The Republicans say he throws like a girl, yet they whine like little girls.

Joe   July 21st, 2009 11:25 am ET

If he were wearing designer jeans, the rest of the pundits would be complaining about wasting his money, and how it is offensive to all the unemployed americans. There is no winning.

dan   July 21st, 2009 11:24 am ET

This is stupid. He was wearing the kind of jeans that probably 95% of the 48 year old men in this country wear. Just because he is president doesnt mean me is gonna be comfortable is clothes that are that different than anyone else in his age group. its pathetic this is the kind of thing people focus on. Its another example of how are country has become one which worships the "cult of personality" we focus on meaningless stuff that famous people do.

You people in the media and fashion industry are totally nuts.

Wars are going on all over the world, military are dying, people are losing their jobs, we are worried about a possible depression, the USA is going down the tubes, a pandemic may be coming and you are worried about Obama's jeans. What is wrong with you folks. It's no wonder people no longer have any respect for the USA.

To even print this article confirms that CNN is totally losing any respect it ever had.

China will soon be taking on the leadership of the world and while I fear that happening the USA can only blame itself.

Bush basically set the world on its head and will be known for the downfall of the USA and then you keep talking about birdbrain Palin as though she has something to offer.

For heaven's sake ...wake up and smell the roses!

I think it's great that this President is not as snobbish in his clothing style choice. Hey jeans are comfortable, and if he wants to be comfortable at a baseball game where your average Joe goes let him. Get off his back! at least he shows that he can be just an average person and not as stiff as the others before him by having to wear suits all the time like the rest of them

President Obama you're just fine in those jeans...it's a pitch of a ball not going to a townhall meeting or any meeting as for as that matters. Why everything has to be label or question about you and your wear. Whatever makes you comfortable; it's alright with me. I have two pairs of jeans that I love to wear more than others because they are comfortable and I look great in them :) . I love "our" President responds when it come to critics and criticism. I'm a woman and I do not like tight jeans; I like the baggy look. The President knowns how to wear his clothes and the right attire for the chosen or right occasion/situation. I like that he's a casual President and not a suit/tie all the time President.

For those who constantly find fault with his everyday attire, I say, get real and find something a little more useful to talk about. I love our president. but CNN this is a ridiculous story. and so are the "fashion experts"

Terry from West Texas   July 21st, 2009 11:00 am ET

It is bizarre to me that there are people who think they know the universal rules of dress and who then enjoy making comments on what other people choose to wear. The only thing that can explain this kind of behavior is that they have become zombies of fashion marketing campaigns. What they are saying is that Obama's choice of jeans are not endorsed by recent fashion marketing campaigns.

Of course, next year "mom" jeans will be called "statement" jeans ("The jeans that you choose because you're confident as a man."). The same people will be ridiculing "non-mom" jeans, and urging all men to throw away their old, tight jeans. ("That's so 2009.")

Bill   July 21st, 2009 11:00 am ET

Also, let's all stop over-drooling about how fabulous Michelle looks–she's less than average as compared to some other famous political personalities-Carla Sarkozy, Queen Letizia of Spain, Queen Rania, First Lady of Spain, etc. Check it out!

Dan   July 21st, 2009 10:51 am ET

Who cares what The President wears as long as he looks the part and appears professional. This President who campaigned on change is certainly living up to that with his proposals and spending sprees. All of this will affect Americans for generations to come. Some think these changes are positive while others are not so sure. Whatever the case – a report on what he wears is NOT NEWS. The press continues to "fawn" over this guy – showing their incompetence to report objectively about anything that he does.

Good to see the President making a pitch for (Health Care Reform) what strikes me with President Obama, is that the President is comfortable , in his own skin. He is (Down to Earth) and it is (Refreshing) to have a President who can display a casual outlook. Many Americans can relate to that, we go out to the (Ballparks) in our (jeans) and like to be (settle) and enjoy the (Game). I think is so (Kool) that President complements (The First Lady) with her Fashion, and does not let (Weak ) criticism distract him form what is more important (The Country). President Obama is a (NEW) and (KOOL) , (Commander and Chief ) and keep hitting (HOME RUNS) for the (Nation) Mr.President..........

Oh GIve Me A Break   July 21st, 2009 10:39 am ET

Although Mr. President, new jeans don't have to be tight.....and his suits look great. Would like to see him wear some lighter, summer colors though. :)

seebofubar   July 21st, 2009 10:38 am ET

Oh he's a little more than just frumpy, he's a liar. No one who claims to be a Sox fan could make the mistake of calling Comiski Park Comminsky Field. He also said that he remembers sitting in the steep upper section of the old Comiski park. The old Comiski park had very shallow upper section, the steep section is in the new Cellular Field. I doubt that this liar was ever at a Sox game. If he can lie about this how can you trust him at all. What a Baffoon.

I would hate his job, but I am so glad he took the position! I feel good with him in charge. Sorry to all the naysayers, but we've been a country of complacents for too long and now we have to fix a whole bunch of things. Change isn't always comfortable, but I finally feel that we're going in a positive direction as a country and as a world leader (a compassionate world leader).

Aleasha from Dundalk, MD   July 21st, 2009 10:27 am ET

I think my President looked comfortable and casual in his jeans - that looked nothing like "Mom" jeans – whatever that is! What do you people want – the Marky Mark look? You'd REALLY criticize that! You people are pathetic. Find something more meaningful to criticize. I'd like to see what each of you would wear on a pitcher's mound. Barack dresses like every other American, which is perfectly in line with his "every American" values – which he puts into action everyday! Everyone needs to get a life, or go on "What Not 2 Wear" (is that the name of that show?) and pick on someone in your own family who is truly frumpy – and not a world leader who knows how to relax – something you all need to do! Having to type this reply is a waste of my important time – but you all need to "get it" – which clearly you don't!

Chris in Memphis   July 21st, 2009 10:26 am ET

Who cares what jeans he wears? fashion critics? he isnt a model!

Bev - NYC   July 21st, 2009 10:25 am ET

And we care about his jeans why? I prefer a someone whose jeans sit at the waist with a belt. He's the President not some rapper who thinks the world should see his underwear. Jeanne Moos and other consumed by this should get a life. How about volunteering in a homeless shelter where mom jeans would be greatly appreciated by someone with nothing.

Patricia Travis   July 21st, 2009 10:25 am ET

He's great!! No matter what he is wearing!!
We should be grateful we have such an intelligent, future thinking man as our president!

Kelli   July 21st, 2009 10:25 am ET

Obama had those jeans since Harvard days.....we used to make fun of him whenever he worn it.

SheriBaby   July 21st, 2009 10:24 am ET

I also thought those were bad jeans, but I think as President, he's better off being mocked for wearing unfashionable pants than being criticized for wearing $200+ designer jeans at a baseball game during a massive recession.

He has a much easier time defending this choice than having to defend how much "his people" spent on his baseball outfit. He looked like a real dad out there.

Carlos   July 21st, 2009 10:24 am ET

Forget the jeans he throws like a girl.

Vanessa   July 21st, 2009 10:23 am ET

Impressive. Criticizing the jeans of our President. This is news? When will Americans think about what is important instead of succumbing to distractions? And when will our media stop pandering to our lowest instincts?

Donkey Party   July 21st, 2009 10:23 am ET

Thank God that issue has been resolved, I've been losing sleep over it nightly. Sure am glad there's responsible reporting out there to cover the utmost of topics. Thanks Fox, er umm CNN!

Marie   July 21st, 2009 10:22 am ET

Seriously???? I have $22.00 in my checking account with payday still two days away!!!!!!

Don't you think it's about time to take this President to task? I swear...with the exception of VERY few, most of the Media wants to have this guy's baby.

Can we stop the hero worship and get to work!!!

Oh and Mr. President....I would really appreciate it if you stopped campaigning and got to work! And, you sir, should be telling the Press that there's alot more serious things to discuss with you, than what you or your wife wears!!

Annie   July 21st, 2009 10:20 am ET

I'm lucky. I work at a job where I wear jeans every day. I've done so for the last 20 years. Jeans aren't frumpy. They're comfortable and practical. President Obama's jeans look good. They're not torn, faded, ripped or hanging halfway down.

So what's the big deal that he wore jeans to a baseball game?

Wouldn't you? I know I would.

Tom St. Paul   July 21st, 2009 10:20 am ET

Note to fashion police: Get a life.

Rob   July 21st, 2009 10:20 am ET

His must have stimulus plan DID NOT do what he said it would. His 'cap and trade' farce of a bill will increase peoples' utility bills, AND has no support from countries who put out more pollution than the US does. His healthcare dream is nothing more than a nightmare that will RAISE taxes, FORCE private healthcare OUT OF BUSINESS (raising unemployment even more), and will LOWER the quality of healthcare in America.

And the only thing he can gripe about is his clothing style? Man, is this guy full of himself or what? History classes 50 years from now will look back upon this as one of the biggest mistakes America ever made. In fact, people, governments, businesses will have a new term for someone who looks real cool, but comes in and messes things up completely and does more damage than anyone thought possible...Obama'd

One Love   July 21st, 2009 10:20 am ET

I was wondering if he borrowed the jeans from John McCain.

dave   July 21st, 2009 10:19 am ET

can you spell "who cares"

fix it so that no one who has has health insurance for 29 years goes bankrupt after a heart attack and you can wear shorts to work Mr. President

Frumpy and Incompetent   July 21st, 2009 10:19 am ET

I'd like a President who knows what he's doing and won't bankrupt the country with runaway spending and big government. I don't care what he wears!

SUE IN CT   July 21st, 2009 10:19 am ET

He still looked pretty darn good to me, frumpy or not. Use your imagination!

Seth   July 21st, 2009 10:18 am ET

The fashion world is delusional. Who the hell cares what his jeans look like. They probably didn’t cost multiple hundreds of dollars so the fashionistas get up in arms? Give me a break, the fashion industry is useless to just about every average American. As much as I didn’t think Obama should become President (nor did I think McCain should be) I'm glad that he doesn’t have to spend a gratuitous amount of money for some stupid designer jeans.

Midwest   July 21st, 2009 10:18 am ET

I am a 50+ year old man. I've owned only two suits at one time (my whole life). I heard President Obama make the same comment (I only had four suits) during his campaign. For some reason, he seems to think that four suits isn't alot! But with each suit costing upwards of $300 (estimate) - I'd say he's a bit out of touch with what the average American can afford.

Ed, Santa Fe, NM   July 21st, 2009 10:18 am ET

Who cares if Obama is a frump? Bush is a war criminal..... let's get some perspective here.

Political Science Major   July 21st, 2009 10:17 am ET

Another Mainstream Media pass or ignorance on the real issues President Obama Faces.

$780,000,000,000 Bush Bank Bailout +
$800,000,000,000 Obama Recovery Act +
$1,000,000,000,000 Obama FY 2009 Budget +
$1,000,000,000,000 Obama Universal Healthcare =
$3,580,000,000,000 Spent in 1 year

My Annual Salary $40,000 taxed $10,000 from my salary. Spending needs to stop and No Media Outlet is criticizing what Obama wants to spend but talks about has time to talk about his Fashion faux paux.

makesUwonder   July 21st, 2009 10:17 am ET

Who cares, there were only about four thousand people there anyway. Not a real big turn out for the President. Guess a lot of people just weren't interested in the man.

Joyce Becker   July 21st, 2009 10:15 am ET

Of course the President would have looked nicer in slim jeans, but the important thing is that he should be comfortable on his free time and he looked good to me. Of course if he wore slim jeans then there would be those who said he looked too sexy in them, just can't please everyone it seems.

Buffalo   July 21st, 2009 10:14 am ET

Well, what do you know? The President wears blue jeans. So do 70% of all airline travelers and 95% of all Americans under the age of 75.

I'm guessing President Obama’s critics would have expected the President to wear robes, i.e.; dress like the Savior, as they like to mock him. I don't know what is more appalling; your ignorance regarding this man or your sacrilegious statements comparing our President to our Lord.

I must ask: Do any of President Obama's critics wonder, or even care, if President Bush wore blue jeans while brushing his Texas property?

Stuffit   July 21st, 2009 10:13 am ET

Pretty weighty subject matter, thanks CNN. HR 1018 passed the house Friday, yet no discussion here. I guess if Americans don't know about the 700 million dollars we just spent to conduct a bi-annual census of wild horses and provide "enhanced contraception" for them, it's just all the better. What's even richer is that the sponsor of the bill was from West Virginia.

I wouldn't think that a program named "Restore our American Mustangs Act" would have a provision for contraception in it. If the point of the bill is to 'restore' the Mustang, one would think just the opposite.

But what do I know? I'm not an enlightened member of Congress.

Mike D. in San Diego   July 21st, 2009 10:13 am ET

This is not journmalism...this is the media blushing and squirming over their crush on the new cute guy at school.

"Did you see his jeans?" (giggle, squirm, giggle) CNN whispers to ABC.

"I think he's JUST DREAMY" (tee hee hee) ABC whispers back.

I voted for the guy and I'm sick and tired of the mainstream media fawning over him. Why don't you criticize him like you're supposed to until he gets off that cute butt of his and addresses gay rights.

The Lonely Libertarian of Liverpool NY   July 21st, 2009 10:12 am ET

I do not often agree with our President, but on wearing jeans I support him 100%. Why can't men wear what is comfortable. Most times when we wear jeans is because we are doing some type of outdoor work, and comforatable is key if you are going to be sweaty and lifting.
Just ask the fashion police how long they can mow a lawn with jeans so tight you can't breathe or move?

whatever   July 21st, 2009 10:12 am ET

Who cares what he is wearing? This is news? Come on CNN, get off these stupid, no good, do nothing stories about the POTUS and start talking about his politics!!!

Illini   July 21st, 2009 10:12 am ET

PLEASE!!!! Enough already!

The news media has officially become a laughing stock when it comes to this President! All the fawning is appalling!

We will certainly miss you Walter Cronkite!

Drew   July 21st, 2009 10:12 am ET

I don't care whether this is newsworthy or not...it's so nice to have a president that isn't elite...just a down-to-earth guy. Do I wish that he wasn't spending so much? Sure. But I'd say that what he's doing for the image of the US more than compensates.

Dan in VA   July 21st, 2009 10:11 am ET

Who even asked him about his pants? That's some hard-hitting journalism for you. Ha ha.

Why didn't they ask him about his birth certificate, or why he keeps pushing for more taxes and money for his government? Are they allowed to ask those questions?

kewpie   July 21st, 2009 10:11 am ET

Just file the story under fluff. Who cares what kind of jeans the President wears?! Is he going to figure out how to put more money in my jeans pocket?

New Era   July 21st, 2009 10:11 am ET

I guess people have nothing better to do. If his jeans were tight and his crotch was showing it would have been all over the tabloids. leave this man alone and let him enjoy the same rights and freedom as everyone else!

Chitown Jason   July 21st, 2009 10:10 am ET

Who cares about the jeans? Go SOX!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

(btw plz hire a pitching coach before your next pitch, Pres. Obama, that was really bad!)

smokey   July 21st, 2009 10:10 am ET

I agree with Pres Obama..I have always been one to go for the comfort, than what style is in..To me it is more important to be comfortale in what you are wearing, then to be worried about what people expect or want you to wear..I dress to please myself and not others, unless it is very special occassion like a wedding, at which time i will sacrifice comfort for the wedding party !..So go on Obama , you are doing a great job !!!

"Jeans"...I've heard it all now. Unbelievable.

Stay focused & comfortable, Mr. President, and ignore these overtly superficial & petty distracters.

opinion   July 21st, 2009 10:10 am ET

Oh, Please can't we stick to and talk about topics, issues that have substance, benefit American People. Who cares what he or Mrs. O wear. I believe they are so secure they could wear burlap and still feel good about themselves. What you are is not based on designer clothes or what you have on your back. We are so shallow, so materialistic .

As usual as one man who is running for a political office said their mission is to see that Our Pres meets his WATERLOO and to break him. The GOP and many Blue
Dog Dems are not interested in making America a better place for all, they only want to destroy Pres. Obama. Racism, hatred, is so obvious in the hearts of so many of our political representatives both GOP and DEMS especially those from the South, Mid West, and old.

Many who present the NEWS are just as racist, hate all people of color. Our President represents all Americans regardless of color, race, creed, religion, or sexual preference. He DOES NOT preach HATE, FEAR, AND DIVISION. He is a GOOD president, support him, give him a chance, as much time as you gave Bush to ruin this country. Give him some time. Too many WHITES want to destroy him don't be one of them. If our Country goes down so do all of us.

shirl   July 21st, 2009 10:09 am ET

That was so SWEET!!! Can we have some information on "boxers or briefs?" Wake up CNN we are suffering out here.

geecee   July 21st, 2009 10:09 am ET

How nice that we have nothing more important to focus on in this country than the jeans the President wears. What is wrong with the news media these days? Really, what is wrong with you? To give this "story" any mileage is ridiculous. The guy can't even wear a pair of jeans without him being criticized. If you are going to attack him, at least make it for a credible reason. Are you all Rethuglicons, or what?

Enlightened Voter   July 21st, 2009 10:08 am ET

Sir, we don't care how you look, you are doing a wonderful job working for the people and it is much appreciated. Thank you!

Stacy from Leesburg, VA   July 21st, 2009 10:08 am ET

Wow, this is the hard-hitting journalism that I so crave. I am sure the media spent precious time discussing the fashion faux pas of past presidents. Was President Washington’s wig “frumpy”? Did the suit that Jefferson wore look “gauche”? President Franklin Delano Roosevelt was surely “stuffy” in his white suits? I have to tell you, I thought the fashion sense of President Taft was “saucy”. We are closer to Pope’s “Rape of the Lock” being a hard news story rather than the utter satire it was intended to be. Walter Kronkite, we miss your sensibility in these woeful lack of intelligent discourse times.

Nat Turner   July 21st, 2009 10:08 am ET

This is it? From banks making billions after governmment loans and no accountability as to how it was spent to helath care reform that apparently will bankrupt the middle class to pay for it to another six months at Guantanamo to another czar for Obama and it all boils down to what Obama wears for clothes.

randy, PA   July 21st, 2009 10:03 am ET

LOL!!!!!!!!! He is sooooo real and natural.

We have $11,000,000,000,000 of debt that is increasing by $1,000,000,000,000 a year and this is the first-up topic?

God help us all.

Obama is selling snake-oil on healthcare, "green" energy, and is about to offer amnesty to 20,000,000 illegal aliens so in 20 years we will have 40,000,000 illegal aliens...and this is CNN's top priority on the political ticker!

This country is about to drown in debt and the president is proposing a massive, long-term spending spree...

This country punishes people who make the smart and hard choices with and rewards deadbeats and illegal aliens...

...and this is CNN's top priority on the political ticker!

Michael   July 21st, 2009 10:02 am ET

More fluff reporting when serious matters go unreported. Curious that Obama has delayed the release of the mid-session budget review which should have been out last week. But more bad news on the spiraling deficit may have tainted his glowing aspirations for universal healthcare. Fortunately for Obama, he can always depend on his co-conspirators in the mainstream media in his fleecing of America.

minnie   July 21st, 2009 10:02 am ET

Obama can go to overstock and type in AG Jeans Men's. They cost Between $200-$300 in department stores but on overstock he can get them between $50-$70. The AG Straight-leg are both comfortable and fabulous looking.

Who doesn't dress casually for a ball game? Most attendees are usually in jeans, shorts, t-shirts, tank tops, etc. I think people need to keep things in perspective. Everyone should have the right to dress down, including the President. Dress appropriately for the function you are attending... that's what my mom always taught me!

Hannah Stevens   July 21st, 2009 10:00 am ET

I think the president has his priorities in order, serving the American people. That's all that matters.

You weren't voted in to look good.....you were voted in to help this country and frankly, you need all the help you can get......

just concentrate on making this country better, Barrack..... that's why you're in office..... I don't care what your clothes look like.

I'd rather you fix this economy than wear triple-digit jeans....

and by the way..... if you didn't fly to the middle of the country to throw a ball..... my tax money wouldn't have been used for your security and air force one time.....and you may have had a chance to meet with someone in Washington on health care, the economy, immigration, etc., instead.....

quit being a rock star and start being my president.....

Henry Miller   July 21st, 2009 9:55 am ET

Maybe the country should have elected Michelle. She's prettier and dresses up better than Barack–and maybe she'd be less inclined to wreck the US economy with trillion-dollar spending sprees and wreck the US health care system by socialising it.

Mommax2   July 21st, 2009 9:45 am ET

People keep saying that dignity has been removed from the White House and needs to be restored. The first step that needs to happen is for the media to stop reporting crap like this.

Who really cares what he wears . . . as long as he is comfortable then that is all that matters?? I mean I dont expect him to wear Armani as he runs our country into the ground. I also dont understand what the big deal is with the fascination with Michelle Obama . . . she is below average looking and looks a bit manish to me and especially with that mouth and big shoulders. She definitely isnt anything I would turn my head around for . . . but then maybe she looks amazing coompared to the past few first ladies so maybe that is guideline being used.

That's a funny article. President Obama has a good sense of humor even if his jeans didn’t cost $150,000 at Victoria’s Undies. I think he's being a little hard on himself when he calls himself frumpy. Take a look at some of the American tourists in Europe stepping out of their planned vacation tour buses if you want to see frumpy.....It's the Griswolds times 56.
