WASHINGTON (CNN) – Sometimes even one of the most powerful men in the world has to answer to the fashion police.
President Barack Obama found himself in just that situation in an interview that aired Tuesday on NBC.
Asked about criticism of the jeans he wore recently when he threw out the first pitch last week at the Major League Baseball All-Star game, Obama didn't make any excuses.
"Michelle – she looks fabulous," the president said of his wife who has increasingly become a global fashion super star since Election Day.
"I'm a little frumpy," Obama said of himself by comparison.
The president also offered some insights into his self-admitted lack of sartorial expertise.
"Up until a few years ago, I only had four suits," the commander-in-chief said.
"I hate to shop. Those jeans are comfortable. And for those of you who want your president to look great in his tight jeans, I'm sorry. I'm not the guy," Obama added.
Obama's jeans choice for his all-star game appearance were widely panned by fashion critics and even dubbed "mom jeans."

Who would you rather have , Obama in frumpy jeans or Palin in a $10,000 outfit?
Joe from Georgia
omg, the jeans were NOT THAT BAD!!!! Cmon people give the man a break!
I think it's great that this President is not as snobbish in his clothing style choice. Hey jeans are comfortable, and if he wants to be comfortable at a baseball game where your average Joe goes let him. Get off his back! at least he shows that he can be just an average person and not as stiff as the others before him by having to wear suits all the time like the rest of them
The news has hit a new low when the president's jeans make headlines. It's something I've really been shook up about!?!!?!?!?!?!
How many babies were killed yesterday that won't be alive to wear a pair of jeans. That didn't make the news?!??!??!?!??!
Mr. President, Just admit that you share jeans with your wife..........its okay, i do it too.
Laughing at this story CNN. Yeah I have to agree Mr. President, nutters are not mans best friend, I don't care how cool you thought John Stockton, Larry Bird or Magic Johnson looked in them. Hey fashion nutjobs, ya wanna see a guy in tight gear, turn your attention to those steroid, over tanned, bad actors that most of you call "professional wrestlers". Sorry CNN, I digres!
You people in the media and fashion industry are totally nuts.
Wars are going on all over the world, military are dying, people are losing their jobs, we are worried about a possible depression, the USA is going down the tubes, a pandemic may be coming and you are worried about Obama's jeans. What is wrong with you folks. It's no wonder people no longer have any respect for the USA.
To even print this article confirms that CNN is totally losing any respect it ever had.
China will soon be taking on the leadership of the world and while I fear that happening the USA can only blame itself.
Bush basically set the world on its head and will be known for the downfall of the USA and then you keep talking about birdbrain Palin as though she has something to offer.
For heaven's sake ...wake up and smell the roses!
"for those of you who want your president to look great in his tight jeans"
I could not possibly care less what this guy looks like in his "tight jeans."
His concerns must be for the Barney Franks and the Chris Wallace's of the world. Chris Wallace who gets a tingly feeling up his legs when he sees obama, and I shudder to think what Barney Franks reaction might be.
how is this news worthy?
In the immorttal words of another Democrat: IT'S THE ECONOMY, STUPID!!
That statement applies to Obama as well as the state-controlled media. Stop with the blathering love affair and diversionary tactics which attempt to take our focus off the really important stuff..
Memo to Jim DeMint –
If the Party of No fails to derail health insurance reform, they could take Obama on as unfashionable. Coultergeist could pretend to be Stacy London.
I think he looked great.
I'd kill for those long legs, mom jeans or not.
Mr. President, invest in some baggy jeans. Tight jeans cut off circulation.
I love it! Comfortable and practical clothes are the best. I admire Mrs. Obama's sense of style and the ease with which she wears her clothes, but I'm more of a function-over-form dresser and it's nice to hear that I'm in good company.
His jeans looked more like something John McCain would have worn.
There's nothing wrong with his jeans. You don't need to wear designer ones anyway. They're jeans, for Pete's sake. Good grief.
A little phrase from the 80s.....RELAX (people!)
Well when you throw like a girl, "mom jeans" are okay.
Carlos July 21st, 2009 10:24 am ET
Forget the jeans he throws like a girl.
Hey, Carlos, stop offending girls. He ain't a baseball player, and he throws the way most non-players throw. Wonder how you throw?
I get a kick at how many Republicans and righ-wingers who are so concerned about the economy all the sudden. Where were you skunks for the past few years when Bush was completely ignoring the oncoming recession that his policies helped to create?
Maybe you want to stick with khakis Mr. President.
You're kidding right? Why isn't anyone asking him why he has delayed the WH's mid-year budget report? And trying to get health care done before August recess? Is there something in that report that could upset his health care agenda? Where's the transparency you promised, Obama?
The real deal
No one will care what he is wearing when he is escourted out of the White House by federal oficers for violating the constitution by not being a natural born American citizen.
all the news doesn't have to be about something "heavy"; a little light news now and then is enjoyable and as far as what he wears, who cares as long as he is wearing something
