Hillary Clinton says North Korea's refusal to discuss nuclear program could provoke arms race.

BANGKOK, Thailand (CNN) - North Korea launched a scathing personal attack on U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Thursday after she likened the leadership in Pyongyang to "small children and unruly teenagers and people who are demanding attention."

At a meeting of southeast Asian nations in Phuket, Thailand, a North Korean Foreign Ministry spokesman blasted Clinton for what he called a "spate of vulgar remarks unbecoming for her position everywhere she went since she was sworn in," according to the state-run KCNA news agency.

The spokesman called Clinton "by no means intelligent" and a "funny lady."

"Sometimes she looks like a primary schoolgirl and sometimes a pensioner going shopping," the statement said.

"Clinton Gets Made Fun Of Abroad" That's really the headline you chose for this? A headline that implies that the Secretary of State is being laughed at around the world? How about something closer to the truth? "North Korea Responds to Clinton's Remarks"? Or maybe, "North Korea's Response to Sec. Clinton Proves Her Point"?

ronald   July 23rd, 2009 11:47 pm ET

It grows more clear after strange outburst from the rogue N. Korean
government that they are clearly on a collision course with not only
the US, but the entire civilized world.

I frankly do not know how we can throttle this rogue power short of some
demonstration of force....however this action would be fraught with
grave possible results.

The Chinese would be the best source for a show of force to try and
get these rogues back in the "real" world.

But how might we arrange this?

I'm sure that the Chinese are more than a bit uneasy with the
current state of affairs....perhaps this might be channeled?

The nation watches as things unfold.

lou   July 23rd, 2009 11:46 pm ET

FINALLY the North Koreans got something right.

Marty   July 23rd, 2009 11:43 pm ET

Those N. Koreans need a "talking to"...

normajean   July 23rd, 2009 11:41 pm ET

The strange leader of North Korea is the last person who should be making fun of Hillary Clinton or anyone for the way they look. He with his "forties" leisure suits and "Stooge" hair cut., This is a person to take seriously, however as to actions, because he is disturbingly dangerous and is one we don't want to take our eyes off of for a minute.

James   July 23rd, 2009 11:40 pm ET

I thought we owned North Korea with the Team America movie pretty well so if they want to take a jab or two at us who cares.

Scott A Bond   July 23rd, 2009 11:38 pm ET

Hillary good job! But I want to know why the comments for the things Obama said about the police is closed?

We are to treat everyonr with respect, even when they are checking on us. If your upset that the police came to see if your house is being robbed and you think you can talk to them Like some out of control teen ager( thats for hillery) for not knowing this is your home, and you verbaly attact them. You will go to jail! Oh I'm sorry that what you do for a liveing does not make you any better then me or any others in the states. We act like that I know I'm going to jail and they will sort out things after I calm down. Sorry Hillery just got home from work and had to say that.

jo   July 23rd, 2009 11:35 pm ET

I think this foreign ministry spokesman's callow remarks only served to prove Hillary Clinton's case.

I liken it to responding to a legitimate complaint with the retort "yeah well you're ugly!"

LA Man   July 23rd, 2009 11:28 pm ET

N. Korea is right about one thing: Sometimes.....Hillary does look like a pensioner gone shopping.

She's gaining weight-those pant suits in their vivid colors have got to go--and Bill needs to take her to hair salon. Soon. Like tomorrow.

Yelonde   July 23rd, 2009 11:27 pm ET

I hope this teaches a lesson to everyone. Name-calling is a stupid way to deal with an issue. I am surprised that two nations, who are technically still at war have resorted to these kinds of actions. It does not fix the situation, it does not stop the situation, nor does it open a path to a solution. Despite being a supporter of Hillary, I do believe that she got what she deserved in this one.

Jon   July 23rd, 2009 11:25 pm ET

Good job Hillary. You took diplomacy right back to second grade. If North Korea pulls your hair, you better threaten them and tell them that your daddy is stronger than theirs! That'll get 'em!

Black Anvil   July 23rd, 2009 11:21 pm ET

Pretty funny coming from a country whose leadership has acted like nothing more than a bunch of spoiled brats for the past several years. If they want anyone to treat them with respect they should start behaving as if they deserved it.

Kelsey   July 23rd, 2009 11:02 pm ET

HA! I have to laugh at the fact that she compared them to children and teenagers, they got offended, and said all those things about her...she was right! They really do act like teenagers and children. I would say that's probably a bad decision on their part to mess with Hillary...

Soaponarope   July 23rd, 2009 11:01 pm ET

I'm not a far left liberal fan, but I think Clinton is and will be a good Sec-State. This nut job in NK needs to go away, and for all the bleeding hearts, that means die. He is insane and a danger to not only the US, but all of Asia.

Joan   July 23rd, 2009 10:46 pm ET

Just more proof of the craziness that comes out of North Korea. Hillary Clinton is very intelligent, whether you agree with her or not. It is just difficult to hear the truth. I can't imagine believing or respecting anything that comes out of North Korea's officials. What a joke!

Bob of Lompoc   July 23rd, 2009 10:45 pm ET

Happy Lady   July 23rd, 2009 10:44 pm ET

lila   July 23rd, 2009 10:44 pm ET

Consider the source. lol
Dear Leader wears an Elvis duck tail hair style and ships in baby faced curvy blonds to love him tender. It sounds like the North Korean spokesman is repeating the Dear Leaders pervy fantasy about U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. Poor Hillary is Dear Leaders ideal "type". Now if she would only act like a dumb little primary schoolgirl Dear Leader might reward her with some money to go shopping with. Pay for play. How about it Hillary? lol
Sounds like Dear Leader wants to pull your ponytail.

Matt   July 23rd, 2009 10:42 pm ET

Jon in VA   July 23rd, 2009 10:41 pm ET

As worthless as North Korea is, it is hard to fault their logic. Does anyone take Hillary serious?

John E Lexington KY   July 23rd, 2009 10:40 pm ET

It's easy to understand the North Korean's confusion, they've been watching Fox News. Next they will announce that President Obama is dumb and eats nothing but watermelon and fried chicken all day.

There isn't much difference between their blather and Rush Limbaugh's.

Vivek Chaudhary   July 23rd, 2009 10:38 pm ET

When GWB was the President, every liberal commented that US is not respected abroad. But Hillary has outdone GWB. They are making fun of one of the most powerful person of the most powerful nation. We have heard Joe Biden jokes all the times. So in a nutshell, we are witnessing some jokers of a big circus. I am sorry couldn't resist.

Secretary Clinton must be thinking "Those guys should be obliterated!".

Vincent Petrosino   July 23rd, 2009 10:33 pm ET

The North Koreans do not like the truth. And a personal insult to our secretary of state is just as ignorant as anyone of our enemies' attempt to overblow their own importance. North Korea is a very poor country where its people are starving and yet they still think it more important to strut "their stuff" and threaten every other nation on earth. Secretary Clinton was 100% correct.

Hillary,

Right on! N. Korea needs to know their place in the world. Their tryrannical temper tantrums should not be tolerated by this country or any other country. They are children, spoiled and vengeful. They are just mad that they do not have what the rest of the world has and it is their own fault. They have been given MANY opportunities in life, ian independent economy that is self sufficent, self-respect in the world, and a worthiness within themselves. They feel sorry for themselves and it is everyone else's fault but theirs.
They blame the rest of the world for their problems, except they put this upon themselves. GO HILLARY!!! Tell it like it is.

Shana   July 23rd, 2009 10:25 pm ET

Oh no they didn't.

George   July 23rd, 2009 10:18 pm ET

Mrs. Clinton is far from a "funny lady" and she doesn't look anything like a "pensioner going shopping." What she appears to be is a former political force in America who has been "neutralized" by the Obama administration. They have saved face by "including her in the team." At the same time, they have made it impossible for her to speak against the administration or position herself for another run for President since she is "a team player." As she becomes increasingly irrelevant (to the great delight of Mr. Obama and all who want a weaker America) these statements will be more forthcoming. She put herself in this position by accepting it. I feel sorry for her, and for this administration and our country.

Peter E   July 23rd, 2009 10:18 pm ET

It is still more dignified than all the mud Obamaniacs STILL sling at her. Ironic that all of that mud is the same old tired talking points republican pundits invented about her in the 90s that even republicans themselves no longer use.

Nurselady   July 23rd, 2009 10:09 pm ET

Hillary Clinton does not strike me as a woman who will have her feelings hurt over ignorant statements made by a chauvanistic, egotistical North Korean dictator's talking head. The statements made by him indicate to me that Secretary Clinton is doing her job and doing it well.

KP   July 23rd, 2009 10:04 pm ET

North Korea is the temper tantrum orphan that no one in the world will adopt. Lets hope as part of one of their temper tantrums they don't lob a nuclear missile in someone's direction.

4 and the door   July 23rd, 2009 9:49 pm ET

Although I believe that Obama's selection for Secretary of State ( okay...his second choice :) ), was done for all of the wrong reasons, it is outrageous to see this kind of disrespect for an American cabinet level position by another country. I mean, they are talking about a former first lady here! She's a lawyer too! And I'm sure she has plenty of other qualifications I just can't think of them right now!

I miss Connie.

Hillary Clinton's criticism of the North Korean leaders was spot on.

And the North Korean leaders confirmed the accuracy of the statement with their reply, which sounded just like it came from punky, unruly teenagers.

bert, Tampa   July 23rd, 2009 9:38 pm ET

NK is begging for it! This may be a no brainer, but we need to get with other Nation's that are able to unite and policy up against NK. Who ever is leading NK is an idiot and they are using their people as pawns, because all of the sactions will only affect the people and not the pigs running NK.
I bet the people of NK don't even know this is going on at such a serious level.
I don't think the leaders of NK really understand Hillary Clinton's job title and the discription.

Anything for distractions and to keep minds off the real issues. Attacking the messenger and not the message. N.Korea seems definite on its decisions and wants to do exactly what they want to do.

Can China and Russia persuade them to return to the table of negotiation? Perhaps not, unless they feel negotiations will be a 'big win' for them.

Who cares what the North Koreans think anyway? Their actions over the past 60 years have demonstrated that they are incapable of making intelligent actions or decisions.

The likely course of events will see the northern part of the Korean Peninsula being turned into a flat green glass wasteland.

The North Koreans continue to refuse joining the current century – too bad for them.

Deborah   July 23rd, 2009 9:09 pm ET

How pathetically unprofessional of the North Korean government, but then this is nothing new. Secretary of State Clinton would far surpass any of them in intelligence judged solely on their behavior, but clearly she is an accomplished, educated and intelligent person to be put in such a sensitive position.

It is also clear that they are living up to the image she portrayed of them as "...unruly teenagers and people who are demanding attention." And all of it in a negative way. No wonder they are ostracized by civilized people of the world.

Lisa B in FL   July 23rd, 2009 9:05 pm ET

I have been a long time CNN viewer. I am increasingly disappointed in CNN's obviously changing philosophy in the way you present the news. Tabloid journalism has invaded your editoral decisions. I am hoping the recent death of Walter Cronkite has forced you (and the rest of America and "real" investigative journalism) to re-examine what has happened to the media and the loss of good investigative, accurate, truthful, journalism in this country. It is my hope that you will choose to take the high road and present the news and constructive analysis as you used to do in your early years. If not, you will continue to become another Fox News.

Clinton is made the bufoon by N. Korea. Obama rings in, while admittedly not knowing all the facts, on cop "stupidly" arresting a black college prof who is breaking into his own house (not really a presidential issue is it?). So much for the good judgement candidate.

This administration is like a football team that runs the first 12 plays from a pre-written script then plays the hand that it is dealt after that. Looks like we're getting near the end of the 1st quarter script of plays. And a lot of the pre-scripted plays have run for no gain.

These guys don't look any better that Bush for crying out loud! They're starting to come apart at the seams already. God help us if we're attacked during this administration.

Yeah, and your mother dresses you funny. We're dealing with some a real brain trust in North Korea. So glad Bush the idiot made up the "Axis of Evil" and invaded Iraq, effectively goading these mental midgets to acquire nuclear weapons. Thanks again, republicans.

Well, I hate to agree with the North Koreans, but . . . . when you're right, you're right.

Hillary Clinton gets made fun of by North Koreans would have been more accurate. You probably used this headline to get more people to open the article- and it worked for me. I doubt if the North Koreans take any American Secretary of State seriously.
