Gibbs shoots down 'birthers'

(CNN) - A reluctant Robert Gibbs struck back sharply Monday at those who continue to question whether President Obama was born in the United States, saying nothing the White House can do will put the issue to rest.

"No, the God's honest truth is no - let's understand this," Gibbs, the White House press secretary, said when a reporter asked if there is anything more the administration can do to satisfy those who question where the president was born.

"I almost hate to indulge in such an august setting as the White House briefing room discussing the made up fictional nonsense of whether the president was born in this country," Gibbs continued. "A year and a half ago, I asked that the birth certificate be put on the Internet. Because Lord knows if you got a birth certificate and you put it on the internet, what else could be the story?

"Here's the deal. If I had some DNA, it wouldn't assuage those who don't believe he was born here," Gibbs also said. "I have news for them and all of us. The president was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, the 50th state of the greatest country on the face of the earth. He is a citizen."

Gibbs comments come the same day Oklahoma Sen. James Inhofe was quoted in Politico as saying those who question Obama's citizenship - who have collectively become known as "birthers" - "have a point."

Inhofe, a Republican, later issued a statement attempting to clarify that statement.

"The point that they make is the Constitutional mandate that the U.S. President be a natural born citizen, and the White House has not done a very good job of dispelling the concerns of these citizens," he said in the statement. "My focus is on issues where I can make a difference to stop the liberal agenda being pushed by President Obama."

The lunatic fringe, beingspurred on by the media, is keeping the flames fanned on this idiotic issue.

I truly wish these conservatives would stop attacking the President on this issue. Just because you do not want to pay extra for higher levels of pollution or pay for everyone's healthcare in addition to your own, that does not mean you have the right to throw around such lies!

I heard he was REALLY born on a distant planet Obamaton and his family came down on a craft in the festival of Wakakiki with the sole mission to raise him to become president and eventually take over the world by using his giant ears to submit frequencies all over the world to take control of the weak minds of the far left and unite them in a common cause to rid the world of the disasters of being Religious conservatives..........Why did you fail us Palin!!!! You doomed us all!!!

Us "people" that either didnt vote for Obama, or who did and now regret it, are not the same people that dont believe in the moon landing. We are just wondering how an "American Citizen" can do so much harm to America in such a short time. That is why we do not believe he is a "real American Citizen" ........
Liberal lefty skirt wearing weaklings would defend obama even if hestole white owned land and gave it to blacks.

All you need to be a citzen is to have one parent a citizen.
His mom was from Kansas. Even if he was born out of the states like McCain, he would still be considered a citizen.

There is enough evidence to question where he was born and whether he is a citizen of this country. His grandmother in Kenya said he was born in Kenya and she witnessed it. The Kenyan ambassador says he was born there. He went to school in Indonesia, who did not accept dual citizenship. When he was 17 or 18 he went to Pakistan when at the time it was illegal for a US citizen to travel to Pakistan, which means he more than likely entered Pakistan on an Indonesian passport. You don't get a passport from a country without being a citizen of that country.

I don't care if he was born on Mars!!! He's a leader unlike the idiot we had for 8 years previously and got us into all the mess we are in, taking a number of billions of dollars in the black and putting country in the red due to his fantasy about wanting to War, War and War.

    1. He produced a copy of his birth certificate.
    2. The birth certificate was also placed on the internet for people as proof.
    3. Members of the media were allowed to examine the original birth certificate in Hawaii.
    4. The head of Hawaii's Records publicly stated at a press conference held for just this purpose (to address this nonsense) that Barack Obama was born in Hawaii and that the documents on file in Hawaii proved this and he had examined them and was satisfied with their legitimacy.
    5. When an individual sued in US court in October to have Obama removed from the ballot on the grounds that he was not born as a US citizen, the suit was tossed out of court by the Judge on the grounds that it was nonsensical (note: the judge as appointed by a Republican President).

Our country has a lot of big stuff to deal with: 2 wars, economic crisis, social security, big deficit, global warming, immigration issues, potential flu epidemic/vaccine issues for the fall. energy costs. This issue has been dealt with. Anyone else who continues to see conspiracy and government coverup really has a trouble with perspective and objective evaluation of data.

  12. No Hillary = No Obama

I think this is symptomatic of a deeper mistrust of Obama – well, what do you expect from a salesman that comes into your home during dinner time to pedal their product? The thing with Obama is you are never sure if his grand plans are to make a name for himself or if he really cares about the rest of us – that's the lingering doubt.

Remember when the Repubs floated the idea of changing the Constitution so that Austrian born Gov. Schwarzenegger could run for president?? If it wasn't a big deal then, what the hell does it matter now? We have more important things to deal with.

How about we change the Constitution to ban any more Texans from being President?? Now THAT would be helpful. We could have done without both LBJ and GWB!!

Wow, gotta love the veiled racism of the GOP. Typical. The interesting question isn't IF the people who buy into this crap are racist, the question is simply if they even realize it or not. I'd be willing that don't even realize it.

I also love Inhofe's quote ""My focus is on issues where I can make a difference to stop the liberal agenda being pushed by President Obama.""

This is typical partisan (specifically GOP) talking point B.S. That is, lots of whining and complaining, but absolutely ZERO contribution toward a practical solution. Nice work there, Senator.

Why did his KENYAN grandmother tell reporters she remembered Barak's birth in he hospital in KENYA?

Where there's smoke, there's fire. Who was present at the birth? Where did it physically happen? Where is the original birth certificate?

Most Americans I know can answer these questions and produce these documents.

If they really wanted to bury the issue, they would provide a birth certificate, not a certificate of live birth, which is not the same thing.

They could provide hospital records, medical bills, etc.

They could subpoena the doctor and nurses, assuming they are still alive.

The other issue besides place of birth being whether he became a citizen of Indonesia and forfeited U.S. Citizenship.

If there was nothing to hide then why not just bury the issue once and for all????
