Professor Gates was arrested at his home in Massachusetts on a charge of disorderly conduct.

WASHINGTON (CNN) - President Barack Obama will meet this week with Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates Jr. and the Cambridge, Massachusetts, police officer who arrested him for disorderly conduct, James Crowley, the White House said Monday.

White House spokesman Robert Gibbs did not say which day the three men will get together at the White House.

UPDATE: The White House has revealed what beer will be served at the much-anticipated meeting later this week: Bud for the president and Blue Moon for Crowley. The Boston Globe reports Gates likes Red Stripe and Beck's.

Both the professor and the President owe the officer a REAL apology.

Ever notice that comments from right wingers are rarely logical or coherent? Limbaugh really is their de facto leader.

The lack of education among the GOP populace is becoming very dangerous.

The President really showed his ignorance in this non-racial issue. Seems to me Mr. Gates has a temper disorder and needs serious counseling if he wants to remain a role model. The main question is "Why didn't anyone thank the woman caller for being concerned"?

And Obama needs to show more respect and support for the Police and APOLOGIZE – be a man and stand up for poor judgment. I would hope we can move forward and leave the Race card out of everyday conflicts.

We need Sarah Palin as president right now for she will ensure that this cloud-headed Harvard prof remains in jail. Any liberal Harvard or Ivy league professor who gets jailed stays in jail and deserves it. This country will be much better off without these head in the clouds flaky liberal professors corrupting our youth.

Wow... our tax dollars spent so well. Thank you for once again wasting the tax payer's time, President Obama. Apparently the professor was right. The police officer didn't know who he was messing it. (A close friend of our president.)

This is beyond silly and a waste of time. Doesn't he have other things to be concerned about. How about equal rights for Gay citizens? Oh that's right..... that topic isn't important to the President. It's only important to him when he is wanting to accept our money and our votes. He is SOOOOOOOOoooo changing Washington.

It's sad to see all of the illiteracy in these comments.

What I can't understand about this situation is: this is Cambridge. Do you mean to tell me that the police department does not have a general idea of where the various professors live, in particular the more prominent ones? And how sad is it that the "neighbor" did not recognize her own neighbor returning to his own home after a trip. That's pathetic. In my neighborhood, almost all of the neighbors exchange keys in case someone gets locked out.

    Hey Everybody,

Our nation was founded on christian ethics: thou shalt love thy neighbor as thy self.... We are all brothers and sisters. Why can't we all get along? Forgiveness is the name of the game. Our new president is only six months old. He has yet to grow. That takes time. The other two contestants are old in their careers and should know better, but, as human beings, they are fallible. So, let us forget our differences and march ahead as good representatives of this great nation of ours. Remember, whenever we do not like someone as president, we simply wait 4 years and vote them out. It is so simple. Thanks to our forefathers who wrote the constitution. OK!

I think it was a wonderful and intelligent gesture. If people would have listened to what the president said, he prefaced his remark by saying that professor Gates was a friend and that he was probably biased because of that fact. He also admitted that he did not have all the facts. I think he was entirely accurate to state that cooler heads should have prevailed. There are always two sides to a story and the president's idea of inviting the two parties to the White Housed to have a beer and talk about it, is the the right way for people to settle their differences. If the parties involved could understand each others perspective, it could do a lot to develop insight and understanding. Bravo to the president!

    Mr. President:

Your did Nothing Wrong by Saying, Cambridge Police Department "Acted Stupidly".

When You Said these Words, NO ONE DIED OR INJURED.

WHY ARE THE AMERICAN PEOPLE NOT PROTESTING WHAT BUSH SAID AND DID:

1…..4300 US TROOPS Killed in Unjust Iraq War.
2…..25000 US TROOPS Injured in Unjust Iraq War.

In the 911 call, Ms Whaley didn't say two black men, but in SGT Crowley's OWN police report, he wrote that she, "observed what appeared to be two black men with backpacks on the porch of [Dr Gates residence]." Why the discrepancy? Did she ever say 'two black men'? If not, then what does that REALLY say about SGT Crowley's account of the event? Hmmm???

The most sad part of this whole thing is that the President finds it okay, I guess to call both parties to the White House for a beer. Since when has the most celebrated address in the country become Party Central? This just makes a mockery out of the whole incident – the President, Gates and Crowley....are we really supposed to believe that Crowley won't be gently persuaded to admitting he overreacted? Will Gates come out and admit what is reported in the police report about his language and demeaning tone to the officer? First of all maybe they can ask Gates what he meant by asking Crowley if he knew who he was messing with?

The picture is worth a thousand words.. Has anyone else ever been handcuffed in front? Got an appology from Cambridge's black Mayor??

Just try cursing a cop's mother and see how you, the average America, are treated by our bloated justice system.

Why don't Obama call from everyone to stop using racial cards? Ridiculous – some companies would not hire blacks now because they are afraid they would have difficulties in case they would have to let them go.
My dear African-American co-citizens: let's fight not with each other but with the ones who hate & want to destroy our country. God Bless America.

Every thing that happen between these two men was about Ego's. I am a cop and I am a home owner/renter. Both of them wanted the other to repsect thier position. However one had more power than the other (cop) until the media increase his voice (home renter). Now throw in race. White man vs Black man. According to your up bringing, your response will trigger who should back down. This is the 2009 and the question is. Should blacks be reminder of their place in American?. Did Americans go to far electing a black Pres.? Is it time to draw a line and said no more eqaul rights? Or is it time to push back? White man vs Black man in the USA! Maybe whites do have a point, what do black poeple do with the freedoms. Just a thought?

What? Is Obama becoming a self appointed referree now? He needs to keep hisa nose out of people's problems, blacka dn white. He is only going to try and control the situation and get the Police to appolize to the black profesor. Pres. Obama is racial and it shows big time. I have seen and admire black guest on some to talk shows who would make a more fair and honorable person to be a mediator between black vs white conflicts. It is people like Obama who keep hate alive between races. Let the rtaces handle it. There are many unbiased people who cna bring this problem together and save face for them both. With Obma one will win and guess whicvh one that will be? I will leave that for you to decide.

evidently the right wingers are church goers or they would be happy that the President is bringing everyone together – You know the part in the Bible that says turn the other cheek.

also, the people who really were Obama's supporters and have now turned away because of this incident, then you must ask yourself did you ever believe in the man or did you just follow the cool crowd. It was cool to vote for the Black man but when you found out he Black sensiblities you back off.

    Sad, Sad, Sad for America

Since when is it the presidents business what goes on in city police departments.? Didn't we elect obama to preside over the US Government on the federasl level? I think he should be doing his JOB and let the city police do theirs.

He just wants to stick his nose in there and make a " RACE ISSUE" out of something that was clearly a LOCAL POLICE MATTER.

obama is into "RACE ISSUES" instead of doing the JOB he was elected to do !

Just becaquse he is president doesn't mean that he can weigh in on matters of civil disobidience. When someone is doing nothing wrong they should obey the protective authority and keep a clear head.

this teacher clearly has a LARGE RACE CHIP on his shoulder and a bigger mouth too. he certainly thinks he's of ? SOME importance just because he works for a college and is on speaking terms with a black president.

The fact that Prof. Gates was arrested was a poor judgment on the police officer. The President spoke but also stated before he spoke that he was bias to the situation, but the fact that he restated his position, is something any person should have done, if he has a empathy. Everybody continues to smart mouth the President, but what makes a President is the ability to show leadership, tact, diplomacy and stand corrected when in error. This President has shown that.

So for all you haters, go and exam yourselves, and your relationships with other ethics groups. Because with all the hate spuing out of your mouths, you may find some issues within yourself regarding race relations and the fact that we now have the first African American President, maybe some of you still can't get over that.
