What beer should be served at the Obama-Gates-Crowley get together?
What beer should be served at the Obama-Gates-Crowley get together?

(CNN) - The upcoming White House meeting with Henry Louis Gates, Jr., and the Cambridge police officer who arrested him earlier this month appears to have touched off a fresh debate all on its own: what kind of beer should be served?

Earlier this week the White House indicated each man would drink the beer of their choice - Bud Light for President Obama, Blue Moon for the police officer, and perhaps Red Stripe or Beck's for Gates.

But one Massachusetts congressman thinks another beer entirely should be served: Boston's own Sam Adams.

In a letter to Obama dated Wednesday, Massachusetts Rep. Richard Neal strongly urges the president not to drink Budweiser, now owned by a Belgian company. Nor should the White House consider serving Miller or Coors, Neal writes, both owned by a United Kingdom conglomerate.

Instead, the White House should serve the three men - all with ties to Massachusetts - the local favorite, not only because of its popularity in the region but also because it remains the largest American-owned and brewed beer, Neal says.

But Sam Adams founder and brewer Jim Koch told NPR if it was up to him he would make a special beer just for the event.

"I'd make a blend of ingredients from all over the world. Which is certainly what's represented there with the three participants," he said. "I would blend those ingredients together artfully and harmoniously, because that's really what we all hope for."

Meanwhile, the Boston Globe reports other Massachusetts-based beer companies are also hoping to get their product a space at the high-profile meeting.

Dan Kenary, president of Harpoon Brewery, told the paper they are working every "back-door channel" the company has.

"We'd love to be the beer at this event," Kenary said.

Does this really matter? If guys are getting together to have a few beers and work out their issues it should be one that they know for sure they like so they will relax and just drink it and talk this silly stuff out...

This entire episode is totally pathetic. Who gives a crap what kind of beer anyone drinks, and why is everybody jumping allover the poor lady who was the caller to 911. She was just trying to do the right thing and i am glad that her taped call was released to show that she is not a racist. You people jump on everything and blow it all out of proportion. Get a life.

I glanced through the posts and didn't see anything that states that it was the officer who initiated the beer/meeting at the White House, not the President! If I missed anyone pointing out this LITTLE detail, I apologize, but people who find fault with everything the President does will turn a blind eye to that fact anyway.

What does beer type matter when people are starving? The Borgen Project has some good information on the cost of addressing global poverty (www.borgenproject.org).
It only takes $30 billion annually to end world hunger!
Yet... we are spending $550 billion annually on the defense budget.

Julia Byrd- Hayden Idaho   July 29th, 2009 5:56 pm ET

A cop who arrests someone for hurting his feelings after the guy has PROVEN that he's in his own home shouldn't get rewarded by a beer at the White House.

That's all this is: Gates was abusive, sure. But if a cop can't take a tongue lashing without arresting someone, he shouldn't be wearing a badge.

Read the First and Fourth Amendments.

Hugo   July 29th, 2009 5:56 pm ET

I guess it could've been worse given Obama's drug use history, he could've said, " hey guys, C'mon over to my crib and let's burn one and get our minds right". Hey, maybe he would've called GW or Clinton for some of the good stuff? Just an enlightened thought as I ponder the Obama Administration's social nightmare makeover in progress!

"In true RepubliCON fashion, expect them to draft a House resolution demanding Sam Adams be served at the meeting. The hypocrisy never ends with the GOPPERS. Grow up. For one, the guy that wrote the letter is a Democrat. For two, Who cares? You do not need to inject bitter partisan venom into everything. Seriously... Grow up.

lynn   July 29th, 2009 5:54 pm ET

Of all the parties involved (including my beloved Obama) I feel that the neighbor, who called the police, is the only one who acted admirably in this entire situation. Her only "crime" was in having concern for her neighbor's home. And while Prof. Gate's reaction, is certainly defendable, the neighbor was the one who should be rewarded for her actions! She not only should be invited to to this event, but should be given a glass of (very fine) wine!

DSW   July 29th, 2009 5:53 pm ET

They are no better than Faux News, thS news item level has hit a new bottom.
We have so many important issues going on and the MSN & Cable shows continue to play to the GOPs tune – distract the general public with absolute drivel – in the mean time the white/wealthy officials who have been VOTED into power by us continue to take care of themselves and their special interest groups – our government has been bought & paid for by banks/insurance co/pharmas/lobby groups!!!

Lesson (not) learned
I taught for many years. I taught about famous people as role models as a teaching tool to help young people learn how to make good decisions,
The lesson learned from President Obama will help young people who make stupid statements about someone or groups to use beer as an acceptable and appropriate tool. If he or she gets angry, it is appropriate for these young people to use the beer as the mediator but they must use the right brand.
It really takes long and many hours of hard work for good role models to help young people solve conflict, but it does not take anytime at all for one role model to do two stupid things in a row
to destroy all the effort.

Justin   July 29th, 2009 5:52 pm ET

Isn't Richard Neal a Democrat? Then why is everyone saying that Republicans brought this up? And as for the type of beer they should serve let them drink what they want. But to have a beer special made for the occasion would be pretty neat.

Christopher KAiser   July 29th, 2009 5:52 pm ET

This. Is. A. Distraction. From. Real. Affairs. I cannot believe this is considered news. Well I suppose the police officer/professor/president incident is also a distraction. I mean what with the Federal Reserve Bank doing what they do, hundreds of thousands of accumulated Iraqi civilian deaths, the Swine Flu vaccine having all sorts of problems (like having components linked with autism), and people all over the world viewing us as imperialists.... it's no wonder that we need a distraction. It does seem cruel to make them drink any American beer to be honest. Here's the joke that the rest of the world (that know good beer unlike impoverished American drinkers) says about American beer, that it's like "making love in a canoe" (look-up the rest of that joke – like American beer the censors will weaken your experience).

For a start it might be nice to drink the REAL Czech Budweisser Budvar for a start. Better than that horse urine that is inflicted on an innocent beer drinking public. However if you want to grab a bottle of something decent in the meantime. Carlsberg, Guinness, Staropramen, Cobra, Asai, Newcastle Brown, should be a few names to look up.

Someone really should convict Coors and Budweiser for cruelty to tastebuds.

I don't think that anyone should HAVE to drink one brand over another unless they LIKE that brand of beer... I sure wouldn't drink Bud over a Sam Adams, but that's me... some people *prefer* Bud. I'd probably want a local micro-brew ale.

If you feel compelled to consider your carbon footprint, you'd drink a local brew, but I don't see any reason why the president should *have* to always do the "PC" thing every moment of his life - that's ridiculous.

Um, I thought the idea of being American is freedom of choice, and you could drink whatever kind of beer you like. I find the idea that this Congressman wants to take away 3 other Americans freedom of choice, and basically legislate the beer that another man must drink, a bit disconcerting. And worse, our friend the MA Congressman, doesn't see anything wrong with that.

And he probably doesn't have a problem with his Japanese car, typing on his Chinese computer, hiring his Mexican gardener, or wearing his Italian shoes, as long as all "true Americans" drink his American beer.

And personally, Samuel Adams beer always tastes like burnt wood to me. Heh heh, maybe they should serve "Black and Tan", and see what the media makes of that?

I think it's pretty amazing that they can drink beer in the White House at all. Back in the '30s, it would have been a crime. Kinda makes you think that someday, a president will invite some folks over to discuss a problem over a few tokes.

"Officer Crowley, would you care for Maui Wowie or Panama Red?"

Artemisios   July 29th, 2009 5:35 pm ET

Ah, this brings back memories of the runaway bride. Thank you CNN!

Jack   July 29th, 2009 5:34 pm ET

I'm hoping Obama says "Oh I can't go, I just remember, I had anything better to do than drink beer and discuss a non-issue with a bunch of over-sensative pansies."

Tania   July 29th, 2009 5:34 pm ET

Now they're criticizing him for beer?! Sheesh.

Concerned   July 29th, 2009 5:34 pm ET

Not a "news worthy" story – but at least it is better than the daily dose of Palin from CNN. More beer stories please, less ex-gov of Alaska noise.

dave   July 29th, 2009 5:34 pm ET

This is the kind of decision that can only be made by congress. Lets spend millions on a study and countless hours debating this.

We may have to wait for congress to fix the BCS first though.

Sher   July 29th, 2009 5:34 pm ET

I could careless what they drink! I would just like to see a badge off and some boxing gloves on... and give all proceeds from the "event" to the lower income African-American's communities! Other than that, I would call it a PRIVATE affair... a right that even our President has a RIGHT to have, SERVE and DRINK to HIS choosing so GET A LIFE pathetic and greedy surface dwellers that have some apparent and SERIOUS mental issues of the worst kind!

uh, huh.   July 29th, 2009 5:34 pm ET

Definitely a black and tan.

kellsbells   July 29th, 2009 5:34 pm ET

Someone should tape this and it can be the new sam adams commercial...

abmaheco   July 29th, 2009 5:34 pm ET

I think Obama is obligated to have an American brew; the police officer has to have a Sam Adam's, and the prof. needs a Bud–but he will probably want a Colt 45.

Hugo   July 29th, 2009 5:34 pm ET

This is unbelievable, after seeing some of Gates prior comments and hearing the 911 tapes it is obvious who the RACIST is. Don't worry America, this is right in line with what kind of world problem our fearless Usurper in Chief Obama can bring resolution to. The police department should file a civil rights suit against both Obama and Gates for racial profiling of the Department. What a JOKE!

Vern   July 29th, 2009 5:34 pm ET

Promote the new taxes serve POT!!!

Student   July 29th, 2009 5:33 pm ET

This makes me chuckle. Thank you CNN. What's on special? I'll have that.

Carlo   July 29th, 2009 5:33 pm ET

If it were up to me I'd choose my beer more on what type of psychological effect the flavor might help encourage. Based on this I would choose a Hefewiezen, perhaps Franziskaner... It's a delightful beer which is a harmonious mix of wheat malt and yeast creating a cool, crisp refreshing flavor with a hint of bannana. Hopefully this would have a calming effect on all participants and help them endevor to work together as well as the beer's components do.

CF   July 29th, 2009 5:33 pm ET

Wow, anti-Obama lunatics really do just want to attack anything and everything he does. Having a legitate disagreement with someone's philosophy or policy is one thing, but c'mon, ya gotta pick your battles.

Wasn't it the Republicans who 6 months ago ran on the platform of being for "Joe six-packs"? Now they criticize Obama for this??

In the West   July 29th, 2009 5:33 pm ET

The PNW has great beer, as does CA, but I vote for Sam Adams, too.

steve   July 29th, 2009 5:33 pm ET

The choice is obvious a black and tan, though it is a waste of a good pint of Guiness. How about a Dixie for everyone? Pale Ale??? How about something in a can shaken well, then it would react just like these two.

Sarah Thompson   July 29th, 2009 5:32 pm ET

Obama needs to put more thought into the ramifications of his beverage choice. The President should consider choosing a Sierra Nevada brand beer for his get-together. They are American made, and extremely green friendly.

Frank, FLA   July 29th, 2009 5:32 pm ET

just another complain but republicans,, and again another way to get off the real issues,,,,,,,,they have no solutions ,,, and im so over everyone that doesnt think Pres,Obama is not right for this country ,,,,how quickly we forget the last 8 yrs,,,,,,,give this man a chance,,,,,,,,,,and to my CNN monitor,,,it really would be nice if you post my comments,,, theres so much crap and lies that gets posted on here,, i guess im not controversial enough for you

Constitutional Insurgent   July 29th, 2009 5:32 pm ET

Next thing we should do is invite Mahmoud Abbas, Ehud Barak, and Ahmadinejad for a cup of tea and hope that'll solve the Middle East problem.

Jim   July 29th, 2009 5:32 pm ET

please. let's move on to a real issue.

Glen   July 29th, 2009 5:32 pm ET

That was 4 mins i will never get back.

Everyman   July 29th, 2009 5:32 pm ET

How stupid.

Neel   July 29th, 2009 5:31 pm ET

this is not news.

Heidi   July 29th, 2009 5:31 pm ET

Maybe they should have that beer in a bowling alley!! As a copy myself, I bet you the officer is a better bowler than our president (whom I adore).

Rafe from the Northwest (Home of REAL beer)   July 29th, 2009 5:31 pm ET

No offense to everyone outside the Pacific Northwest, but your beer just doesn't stack up. Here in Oregon we have several of the finest microbreweries in the world.

Obama needs to do himself a favor and get some Rogue Dead Guy Ale imported for this occasion.

Sam Adams? phhssssssh that is NOT real beer, by any standard.

go with a Rogue or Deschutes beer. end of story.

eahollis4   July 29th, 2009 5:31 pm ET

Obama should serve up some colt 45 malt liquor and some BBQ chicken!

Proud Member..Party of No   July 29th, 2009 5:30 pm ET

Obama and the media actually believe that people care what kind of beer they drink. What a bunch of clowns.

For You for The US   July 29th, 2009 5:30 pm ET

First of all, the president has set a time table for a full withdrawl from Iraq. As far as I am concerned, over 4,000 Americans died in Iraq during the LAST administration. Although CNN is silly for reporting more crap that isn't news, everything that can be done to get our men and women back home is being done, and the house is discussing a bipartisan bill RIGHT NOW live on helping returning soldiers. Believe me, I had more doubts with Bush. What was he doing while people were dying? Probably drinking more beer and doing some weed. The moment Obama wants one, people go nuts.

The war will be over and our men and women will be back, because of the president and his administration.

And some Abita would be good.

Diane   July 29th, 2009 5:30 pm ET

I think common sense is long gone out the window. Who gives a fig about what kind of beer these gentlemen drink????? I personally have drank Budwiser for years and was upset that it was sold but because I like it, I still drink it. Don't we have more important things in this country to worry and speak up about other than this. Everytime I think I have heard everything, something like this comes along. Crazy, just plan crazy!!!!!!!!!

Shirley In California   July 29th, 2009 5:29 pm ET

With Obama's popularity it is YOU republicans who are afraid of him? Just imagine all of this over a beer. It seems anything and everything he does IS news. We democrats could care less about palin it is YOU who should be very afraid of Obama and my guess is YOU are!

Jim   July 29th, 2009 5:29 pm ET

None appear to know beer. Sam Adams is a good pick as are hundreds of other craft beers. If you are going to serve beer at the White House educate up Sir!

Sherry   July 29th, 2009 5:29 pm ET

I think everyone should butt out and allow President Obama to drink whatever he enjoys. People are getting far too critical over every word speaks and action he makes. It's getting ridiculous. How about stop looking for negative in everything and everyone and start looking for the good. That might not be as sensational to report, but it would be refreshing.

Erlinda   July 29th, 2009 5:29 pm ET

For the sake of the people of the United States – PLEASE stop this nonsense!!!! I don't care what beer they drink. This is too distracting and a waste of the President's time. No other president would have been asked a questions about this "profiling" event during a press conference about Health Care, and I am sorry Barack Obama felt he had to respond, because no response would make everyone happy!!! Let the man preside! Give Skip Gates and Sgt. Crowley a glass of milk – beer might get them too excited. Throw in a cookie. Leave us alone.

Alex   July 29th, 2009 5:28 pm ET

I am with Brian...Shiner get's it done every time.

Living large in Austin, tx

jwolfee   July 29th, 2009 5:28 pm ET

oh please....just stop, for once....at least the prez drinks beer. i trust anyone a little who can pop a top and enjoy life a little......just get off it already!

Brian   July 29th, 2009 5:28 pm ET

Two words. Yuengling Lager.

GAK   July 29th, 2009 5:28 pm ET

These guys don't always drink beer....

But when they do....

They prefer....

DOS EQUIS!

Heidi   July 29th, 2009 5:27 pm ET

I recommend Mad & Jack's African Amber. It's delicious!

George   July 29th, 2009 5:27 pm ET

Well, at least that would be a decision Obama would almost be qualified to make.

Tom St. Paul   July 29th, 2009 5:27 pm ET

Funny stuff, all! I would've picked Sam Adams, too. Not only is it a Boston brew, it's named after one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. If I may, I'd suggest the Summer Ale. So refreshing this time of year!

KB   July 29th, 2009 5:27 pm ET

Please give this story a rest!!! CNN, you have bigger fish to fry with one of your own, Lou Dobbs, spreading all kinds of lies on President Obama. What a waste!

Chris   July 29th, 2009 5:27 pm ET

Let them drink what they want. Who cares...why make them drink something they don't like?

Matt   July 29th, 2009 5:26 pm ET

I'd love to see what Jim Koch would come up with. The man is a pure brewing genius.

Dean P. Valencia, CA   July 29th, 2009 5:26 pm ET

BEER???????!!!!????

Does anyone care that a health care bill is being negotiated that will change ALL of our lives and the QUALITY of our care???

Wake up people, please! Lord help us if this thing passes!

Ken, AZ   July 29th, 2009 5:26 pm ET

For God's sake, please give me a break. Maybe none of these gents like the taste of Samuel Adams beer; I don't. And does the congressman eat and drink only domestic foods and beverages?

RCLGuard   July 29th, 2009 5:26 pm ET

This president can't go to the bathroom without someone making it into a Anti_American conspiracy.

David Smith   July 29th, 2009 5:25 pm ET

As someone who grew up in Massachusetts myself, I suggest to Representative Neal that there are more important things to do than keep this conversation going around beer choices....not everything needs to be a political or publicity opportunity.

Let these 3 gentlemen meet, let it be a teaching moment for each of them and for all of us....let's keep the silliness out and the dignity in please.

JoblessInSeattle   July 29th, 2009 5:25 pm ET

Oh wow, fascinating story. Can't wait to see the pictures of the three stooges with beer in their hands smiling ear-to-ear. Together, they make a perfect six-pack – just lacks the thing that ties the six-pack together!!

rufus   July 29th, 2009 5:25 pm ET

Shots of Maker's Mark, Wild Turkey or Jack Daniels would be more manly. This would flush out the sissies.

Lars   July 29th, 2009 5:25 pm ET

The amount of time wasted by our representatives on issues they invent to hear themselves on the news never ceases to amaze me. Rep. Neal, didn't you have something else to do today that serves your state and this nation better than promoting a beer already widely successful? I am sure you're thinking of sponsoring a bill with a couple more buddies from Beantown and throw away more of our money in aupport of your favorite beverage. And if you claim this all in good humor, then save your joking around for the recess and on your own dime!!! Give us a break!

Mike Moser   July 29th, 2009 5:24 pm ET

So uptight people.................man!!!
What a great way to hold a conversation....how about also dragging out the cigars and have a discussion.

Glen in LA   July 29th, 2009 5:24 pm ET

I don't like beer. Let's get back to the real news; the kind with martinis.

Anonymous   July 29th, 2009 5:24 pm ET

Gates wants OE...you know it.

Farva   July 29th, 2009 5:23 pm ET

I'll take six Schlitz please!!

Larry   July 29th, 2009 5:23 pm ET

Is this for real?

Tom   July 29th, 2009 5:22 pm ET

I think i'll have a Yuengling or two tomorrow afternoon and cry in my beer that we're even talking about this.

SeaWife   July 29th, 2009 5:22 pm ET

Oh, and don't forget, we could not let Obama drink Budwieser beer as that is the co. that Cindy McCain owns. (Hey, Senator McCain, we haven't heard any yelping from you yet. Yikes. That would be a travesty! .

Rich   July 29th, 2009 5:22 pm ET

"This 'beer summit' is a slap at blue collar people. Give the white guy some beer and all will be better. The lower middle class cop will be nice if the educated black guys just get him a little liquored up. Where are the President's advisors? Don't they think these things out? He should take a tip from Reagan and stay far away from the media. They mean him no good. They're out for themselves."

Since when do educated people not like beer? I'm educated. I like beer!

David Royall   July 29th, 2009 5:22 pm ET

Is this CNN or the National Enquirer?

Patrick - Indianapolis   July 29th, 2009 5:21 pm ET

Can't a guy just have a beer these days?

Aaron   July 29th, 2009 5:21 pm ET

Can't believe this is even being covered. Perhaps if this Congressman spent more time actually working on meaningful issues Washington would actually get something done. Absolutely pathetic!

Mark   July 29th, 2009 5:21 pm ET

As another American dies in Iraq the president enjoys another beer.

Sally St. Romain   July 29th, 2009 5:20 pm ET

Lighten up everyone! One would think that with all negative news that is dumped in everyone's faces everyday that someone could get a laugh out of this.

SeaWife   July 29th, 2009 5:19 pm ET

This is the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard.

Can't anyone get a life anymore!

rick freeman   July 29th, 2009 5:18 pm ET

What a joke

John   July 29th, 2009 5:18 pm ET

Oh come on, the beer is simply supposed to help what "ales" them! It doesn't matter what brand. There are more critical things to be concerned about.

Sperry4551   July 29th, 2009 5:16 pm ET

Patriotism is not stupid.
And do you really think this is as big of a deal as CNN is making it?

Pull your heads out.
Go Sam Adams!

mary lou childs   July 29th, 2009 5:16 pm ET

...and this comes from a member of our congress who has let all the manufacturing go to China – where was he when all those businesses left the country?

60's survivor   July 29th, 2009 5:16 pm ET

I like busch light. but lemonade is good too! ya know you take a sour situation and make something good out of it. a great idea.

Shane from chicago   July 29th, 2009 5:16 pm ET

Wow . . . . i hope the comgressman that took the time to write Obama will reimburse the taxpayers that pay for his time with the endorsement money he obviously got from Sam Adams.

zago   July 29th, 2009 5:16 pm ET

It's easy for Lou Dobb at CNN to promote the birthers' agenda since president Obama looks darker than Lou Dobb. CNN has to stop this show or censor it. Looking at Lou Dobb's show one gets confused about whether they listening to Fox News or CNN. This needs to be clarified for the sake of honesty

Austin   July 29th, 2009 5:16 pm ET

Y'all need to lighten up. I found this entertaining. Y'all are wasting your time writing comments about how this was a waste of time. Nice. Put a smile on your face and stop taking life so seriously. Go have a beer. I recommend a New Belgium Fat Tire . . . Mmmmmm.

Bit   July 29th, 2009 5:15 pm ET

Richard Neal needs to stay out of it!

Tafari   July 29th, 2009 5:14 pm ET

The media is acting stupidly with the continued micro coverage of this story. This is so very non-news worthy that.

Richard Neal's constituents should sue him for wasting time on petty request!

Doraine Gordon   July 29th, 2009 5:14 pm ET

Oh what the heck. Let them drink any kind of beer they want. No matter what they drink the Media will make something out of it. Or those blasted Republicans will. Does anyone really care? With all the real problems going on right now it's stupid to even be talking about beer. So let it go and move on!!

Bill of Florida   July 29th, 2009 5:14 pm ET

Honestly, I think they should have chosen Dos Equis Amber. Now there is a beer. What's more, they should have chosen to serve it so cold that it was slightly slushy upon opening the bottle. It just makes good sense to drink one of the finest cervazas in the world during the 20th Century. It's also ideal from the standpoint that it's a uniter, not a divider. A good beer from a neutral country should resolve these problems. Thank you.

James M. Holmes   July 29th, 2009 5:14 pm ET

Seems CNN is the one "acting stupidly"!

Really.. .THIS is newsworthy?

Why doesn't CNN ever – EVER report on the LIES being spread by the GOP on any number of issues... but they seem to have plenty of space to waste with this nonsence?

"Most trusted name in News"... give me a break... CNN is nothing but FOXNEWS Lite and getting worse... You should be ashamed CNN.

Lou Dobbs is your "face" now CNN! He speaks for you and he actually believes teh "birther' nonsense... Way to let the patients rule the asylum CNN... You've officially become another cable-news JOKE!

T in the Big D   July 29th, 2009 5:13 pm ET

Is it April fools day? Rep. Richard Neal is surley pandering for votes here! It's a good thing he did not ask them over for mixed drinks!

Ted   July 29th, 2009 5:13 pm ET

Sam Adams is probably the best choice, but don't forget Harpoon. New England is a hotbed of great microbrews.

sam jackson jr   July 29th, 2009 5:13 pm ET

they are both related through irish ancestory (and obama is part irish as wel). wouldnt Guinness be a more natural choice here?

Chris   July 29th, 2009 5:12 pm ET

CNN you are just plain stupid.

Wayne   July 29th, 2009 5:12 pm ET

Shocking that Prof. Gates would pick Red Stripe. That is a product of Jamaica and there is actually a boycott going on because of the rampant and horrific homophobic attacks that have become all too routine in Jamaica. The island nation has been labled "the most homophobic place on earth."

Bad form once again Prof. Gates.

John   July 29th, 2009 5:12 pm ET

You mean the President has to have beer to talk to those two.
A cup of coffee or a glass of ice tea should be good enough.
Probably a better thing would be to have Gates and Powell
ride with Crowley for a couple of weeks and get a better
perspective of his job.

EJU   July 29th, 2009 5:12 pm ET

Oh Please!!! There must be something constructive these people could be doing. Rep. Richard Neal is this what you do while on the clock?

LacrosseMom   July 29th, 2009 5:12 pm ET

SO stupid ........ that THIS is even a story!

Rashid   July 29th, 2009 5:11 pm ET

This 'beer summit' is a slap at blue collar people. Give the white guy some beer and all will be better. The lower middle class cop will be nice if the educated black guys just get him a little liquored up. Where are the President's advisors? Don't they think these things out? He should take a tip from Reagan and stay far away from the media. They mean him no good. They're out for themselves.

Dave   July 29th, 2009 5:11 pm ET

Makes perfect sense to me...

phoenix86   July 29th, 2009 5:10 pm ET

It should be non-alcoholic beer. Everything about this presidency is fake.

Deb in Colo   July 29th, 2009 5:10 pm ET

Major eyeroll...I think somebody is missing the point.

Andrew   July 29th, 2009 5:10 pm ET

This is not news.

Donna   July 29th, 2009 5:10 pm ET

What's next, a debate over serving the beer in cans, bottles, or a keg? Sheesh, let's get everyone involved! Give it a rest CNN and the all the other media out there, also!

Professor   July 29th, 2009 5:09 pm ET

It's too bad that our President drinks beer at all. Anyone who drinks beer is an irresponsible fool, and NOT fit to be the President of the United States.

JA/TN   July 29th, 2009 5:08 pm ET

petty, premature on the mag's part, you must be in the ivory tower, to say recession is over

DRus   July 29th, 2009 5:08 pm ET

Sam Adams is gross

Kim   July 29th, 2009 5:08 pm ET

Dear God.

Tehran   July 29th, 2009 5:08 pm ET

This is why nothing get done in American. People are worried about the wrong thing. While you at it, take all the foreign cars off the road and market too. Stop trying get brownie points and make money off a serious topics. I dont even drink beer, but let the men drink whatever brand they want.

Wendy   July 29th, 2009 5:07 pm ET

The best reason for having Sam Adams is simply the taste. Forget all the political crap, it's one of the best American beers by far.

Mike   July 29th, 2009 5:07 pm ET

Please tell me this is not a story! Who cares what beer they drink. The focus is a discussion that haunts America today, not the beer they drink. Geez!

seebofubar   July 29th, 2009 5:07 pm ET

Give Obama any beer you'd like.....as long as he eats some crow with it.

RNC = DNC = politics as usual   July 29th, 2009 5:07 pm ET

This article all by itself demonstrates how a slick career-politician lawyer armed only with bluster, emotion and distracting speeches became the President of the United States.

We have no idea what is important apparently.

And he is still using cheap tricks to distract us from minor details like his broken promises, corporate friends and general cluelessness.

Melissa   July 29th, 2009 5:06 pm ET

Oh for gods sakes, its just beer. Let them drink whatever they want. Beer is disgusting no matter who makes it anyway.

Brian in Texas   July 29th, 2009 5:06 pm ET

Blue Moon–the police officer has great taste in beer. Obama needs a little help though. Somebody get that man some Shiner Light.

Frank, Philadelphia   July 29th, 2009 5:05 pm ET

Sam Adams is terrible. Not as terrible as Bud Lite, but terrible nonetheless. Can we stop making a major ordeal of every little thing? Drink whatever the heck you want. I don't care if the Osama brewed it himself in a cave in Pakistan.

Blessed_Truth   July 29th, 2009 5:05 pm ET

This is way beyond STUPID!

Steve   July 29th, 2009 5:04 pm ET

Are you kidding me! This congress man is more concerned about what type of beer these three men will drink? He should be concerned about passing a Health Care Bill that bennifits all Americans.

Mike   July 29th, 2009 5:03 pm ET

No wonder we have such lousy governence from Washington, from the President on down. With far more important things to do than bicker over beer, our lawmakers should be concentrating on the issues and bills facing them in Congress and not be making comments regarding what beer the three guys will drink at the white house (which, by the way, is just another publicity stunt for the top czar).

Michael   July 29th, 2009 5:03 pm ET

The geopolitics of beer.

Obama Victim   July 29th, 2009 5:03 pm ET

can it get any sillier??

Zero.   July 29th, 2009 5:01 pm ET

See. I finally hit the right blog. Or did I? Imagine the explosion from Obama after his Six-Pack...

Polar Bears Against Palin   July 29th, 2009 5:01 pm ET

CNN, just stop with this nonsense!

Scott, Tucson   July 29th, 2009 4:59 pm ET

Now if this situation occurred while Bush was still in office, the leftist here along with the media would be attacking him for having these two men over to the WH for a beer.

News....   July 29th, 2009 4:59 pm ET

ohhh....I thought I was on CNN....yanno, the website that reports news.... weird.

You're spending your time on this article-when three bombs went off at the OUTgames in Copenhagen...but yea..no this seems totally relevant...

what a joke.

Cathy   July 29th, 2009 4:59 pm ET

Really??? This is what we are worrying about in Washington?

Derek from Medford, MA   July 29th, 2009 4:59 pm ET

Wow...this story is taking on a life of it's own.

MD   July 29th, 2009 4:57 pm ET

Are you kidding me...

Randolph Carter   July 29th, 2009 4:56 pm ET

Bud is a schwag beer. Have a pint of Guinness for crying out loud. Have a nice day!
