Obama mocks Newsweek cover, Newsweek hits back

Obama is mocking Newsweek's latest cover.
Obama is mocking Newsweek's latest cover.

(CNN) - Newsweek magazine got some unsolicited PR Wednesday from President Obama, but it wasn't exactly a ringing endorsement of periodical's latest issue.

At a North Carolina town-hall health care event, Obama asked if anyone had seen the latest cover of Newsweek that boldly declares, "The Recession is Over!"

"I don't know whether you've seen the cover of the latest Newsweek magazine on the rack at the grocery store, but the cover says: 'The Recession is Over,'" the president said as part of his prepared remarks at the event.

"I imagine you might have found that news a little startling," Obama continued. "I know I did."

Obama went on to say while certain indicators are improving, like the stock market and home sales, "That's little comfort if you are one of the folks who have lost their job."

The article in question - with the sub-headline of 'Good Luck Surviving the Recovery' - actually says much the same as Obama did Wednesday - that leading indicators appear to suggest the recession is nearing an end, but the recovery is likely to be a slow process.

"When economists proclaim a recession over, they're celebrating a technicality: they mean economic output has stopped contracting," Newsweek's Daniel Gross writes. "And while that is good news, you might wait a while before adding Judy Garland's rendition of 'Happy Days Are Here Again' to your iPod."

UPDATE: Gross has issued a response to the president in a posting on Newsweek.com entitled, "Obama rips Newsweek's cover. We rip back."

"The article notes—as Obama's speech does—that the discussion surrounding the end of the recession is largely a technical discussion ("GDP growth alone can't feed a family, or a pay a mortgage") and that we face tough economic times and a recovery that will feel a lot like a recession," says Gross.

"It's common to hear journalists complain of being overworked. And in this case, it's true. In addition to writing the first draft of history, we seem to be writing the first draft of the president's speeches," he also says.

Once again, just like with the cop and prof, discussing things that he should not. The entire economy is driven off consumer confidence and he squashed what little the Newsweek cover may have helped. Oh well, what to you expect from an inexperienced community organizer.

Hey CNN – why don't you report about the NEWSWEEK reporter (Daren Briscoe) ... the person assigned to cover Obama's Presidential Campaign.... JUST JOINED THE OBAMA ADMINISTRATION!

Gee – no conflict of interest there!!

Not only did the MSM abdicate it's responsibility in covering Obama... Not only did they VOTE for him.... NOW they're officially working for him!

Oh let's not forget CNN selling T-shirts: "Obama raises hand, lifts nation".

Obama and the liberal press just had their "Mission Accomplished" moment. We'll see where unemployment stops.

I don't think the President "mocked" the cover of Newsweek. Rather, I think he "cleared the air".

Yes, there have been gains as regards tamping down the recession but the unemployment situation will remain unabated until 2010. Those who are still awaiting a quick fix should bear this time frame in mind.

Tha's not a "mock" that's stating the obvious un-truth. The recession is NOT over and as President, he has as responsibility to set the record straight. Plus, I'm sure that he was being jovial and light and not trying to put Newsweek down. CNN please stop sensationalizing everything. That's not healthy.

Typical Media – short on facts, heavy on hype.

The recession is far from over. With such inept media, it is no wonder we get stock market bubbles, rush into unnecessary wars, and believe all the propaganda spewed out by politicians.

With Obamas policies it will be a very long time before we recover from this recession. He doesn't seem to understand that he needs to become business friendly. All these jobs lost will not come rushing back. We have downsized and will stay there for awhile. No shock considering he has no business/job experience.

Wasn't there some big-shot economist who predicted way back in December that the economy would be flourishing by mid-summer, and then collapse again, and to a far worse degree, by November.

I forget who it was that said it, but the gist of what he was saying was that we were in for a very long Depression (not recession) and that we should be cautious not to get over-excited by temporary fluctuations in the marketplace.

I would like to say that, much of the current state of the economy is driven by the media, and it is also a product of the state of mind of the average consumer, while we have 10% unemployment, we have 90% employed. Those 90% need to go out and spend/buy product and sevices in order to re-employ the 10% without a job. We do that by positive re-inforsement in the media. If you read over and over, doom and gloom, you begin to believe it, if you read over and over we are in a recovery, you also will begin to believe that. We need to change hearts and minds that we are recovering and start to install hope, rather then doom. We need more good news and less of the bad.

Obama is soooo funny! Yes, the recession is ending but ........ where are those 2 or 3 million jobs he promised with all of his earlier smooth talk? This man could sell healthcare to a dead man for sure just as easily as he sold it to those millions who want it for nothing. I too would love to have it for nothing, but alas, I'm one of those lifetime working fools who has watched this government rip me off for years in order to make some sort of social justice for those who don't want to work.

It's going to take more than six months for the economy to rebound, after eight years of the policies that drove it into the ground. Give it time. The economy is a product of confidence.

It seems that about twenty percent of Americans are in a pose of locked denial and retrenchment against the President, hoping and expecting no recovery and certainly taking no action to aid the recovery themselves.

Try some cautious optimism, but keep it real. That's what Obama did in his reply.

It's possible that the GOP will be able to prevent this recovery, but will they be able to convince all the people they ruin that it was for the best in the long run? Sure, they're rich and unaffected by economic downturns, but not every Republican is as rich as Rush, and many of them are still at least as loyal to America as they are to the GOP.
Crack on Obama all you want; do you see Bush or Cheney trying to save our economy? Palin claims she is free to fight for the American People now, but she's trying to stop new jobs. Don't see Romney fighting for job creation either. The GOP wants America to fail, just so they will have a better chance in the next election.

Maybe Newsweek is doing their part to lift the countries mood with a little reverse psychology. Most people don't understand the economy , and only care about how it afftects them, if you tell then it's over, Business may being hiring at lower salaries, but job will be filled, and impulse spending here we come. Hopefully the American consumer will be smarter about their personal finances this time around, most of us have such short attention spans though I doubt it. Obama's been in office 7 months and some are screaming that all the problems should be fixed like he has a magic wand.

Once again, the right can't handle the truth and prefers being told that everything is okay so they can go and shop, spend, and borrow from China. Newsweek should know better than to report something like that with so many out of work. Thanks for being honest, President Obama. We've got a long way to go before full recovery and I wish we could work together as Americans and stop complaining.

We, as Americans, should all be happy that at least there are some signs of recovery on the horizon.

It seems by many of the comments on this blog, that many people in the US don't really care about the US, rather they would just see the economy collapse even further just to promote political ideology.

Or worse - their suppressed racism.

I dont care what you want to call your party; Dems, Repubs, whatever, I want my 3 year old daughter to have a happy, healthy life and enjoy the opportunittes that our generations have been careless enough to squander.

I would hope that all Americans share this value.

"Don't scare the Republicans like that……they want the COUNTRY TO FAIL!!"

Exactly. "Country First" was nothing but empty marketing spin for the GOP. They would rather see our democratically-elected president fail, and have the country continue to suffer, than have to live through the embarrassment of his policies actually fixing the problem THEY caused. It's looking more and more like "conservative" and "patriot" are mutually exclusive terms.

Just like the Gates controversy, Obama read the headline (in this case, the cover), and failed to read the underlying story which essentially said the same thing Obama did. This is twice in one week that Obama criticized people without knowing all the facts or bothering to find them out, It is beginning to look as though Obama is quite shallow in his knowlwdge, and often speaks stupidly with his foot in his mouth. This does not foster confidence among millions of Americans

There are some of of you who are going to trash the man no matter what he does, at least he's trying to address some of these issues and fix them, which is a hell of a lot more than I can say about the last 8 years. Many of us knew Bush would wreck this country before he ever took office and when we questioned it, we were told 'support your president'. Now the shoes on the other foot. Facts are simple, you can whine and moan and claim you know the solutions...you Don't. Nobody does. And Nobody can predict what will happen with this mess, it is an immense problem that has to be 'worked' and changes need to be made as you go. So my question to all the people who post this negative garbage about what's happening and claim to have all the solutions, where the hell were you 8 years ago? Nuff said.

"Don't waste a crisis", or so said Obama's chief of staff. Obama's biggest fear is that the economy improves before he can get all his "emergency powers" legislation passed.

And, of course, an economy that can improve so fast is obviously one that wasn't in bad shape to begin with, so he'd have a very hard time taking credit for fixing something that wasn't really broken. When will people realize we all had more of an economic panic attack than a real-live meltdown?

Of course he mocked the cover...

Isn't it clear that Newsweek was mocking the idea that the recession is over? Would you rather he used handwritten notes like Lincoln, Roosevelt etc.?? What an idiotic thing to criticise. Apparently there was a need for the technology or it would exist on every newscast and awards show. The man is smart, writes brilliantly, and is actually familiar with grammer and sentence structure. Further hush the poor and struggling? Shame on THIS country and those who say this recession is over as my very last dime is being taken for MORE fees without even enough to take my child to the INCREASED FEE PUBLIC PARK... as panic of winter, school expenses and MORES FEES are right around the corner from our fortunate to STILL have swelting 106 degree plus non air-conditioned home today(although I couldn't afford the electric bill to run one anyway now)!

Oh Republicans, get off your high horses! The President borrowed a page out of your own playbook and now, you don't like it. The Republicans have never seen a headline that is favorable to liberals that they've never expoited. Sure he used the Newsweek headline to make his point, that's exactly what Republicans would have done. Good move, Mr. President. It's time we as Democrat start playing the same game with the Republicans. Enough Already for bipartisanship. If the Republicans don't want to get involved in geting this country back on track after eight years of running it down by the Bush administration, we Democrats need to do it ourselves, and we'll take the blame as well as the criticism.

Well, if we want to get technical, people wouldn't have freaked out last October if not for the media talking about how bad things were, maybe this is a reverse psychology approach to the economy.

...And Republicans don't want the nation to fail, just the nation to fail why Democrats are in power so they can take power back, it is just the same cycle that has been in motion since Lincoln won his election.

Only seeing half the cover, I thought it was excellent satire; "THE RECESSION IS OVER!!!" on an enormous balloon...that would have been priceless. As such, the big fat asterisk should have been enough of a clue to any dolt reading it that this is not a ringing endorsement heralding the end of hard economic times. Point in case – Asian4Hillary comment is exactly what my post was about. The President put the title in perspective and some right wing nut job went over the deep end.

I'm ashamed of people who criticize their President every time he swats a fly or shares an opinion.

I respect my brilliant President. He's the first President in my lifetime who I have complete faith in his leadership, and I'm 54 years old.

Why so hateful and disrespectful – I know you're used to Bush who didn't deserve respect, but be grateful and get on your KNEES and thank God you finally got a wise and moral President.

President Obama is doing an amazing job!

He inherited an absolute mess and in only 6 months, he has stabilized the housing, financial, banking and auto industries, revived science, improved our standing in the world, begun bringing our troops home from Iraq and is on track to deliver substantial healthcare reform. He obviously can't turn the Bush Recession around that quickly, but we are on our way. Go OBAMA!

    BEST vote I ever cast!

I thought only Palin didn't read Newsweek?

It was irresponsible of Newsweek to put this on their front cover, knowing full well people will only read the headline and not buy the magazine to read the entire article. Well, if Newsweek is "hitting back" (how ridiculous!), then they can't be in the "tank" for Obama now can they? Of course, anything negative about Obama is going to wind up the Rethuglicans to a frenzy so they can attack him for "not knowing all the facts before he speaks". He knows what he is talking about. Can anyone imagine the further mess we would have been in had McCain/Palin been elected?! I shudder to think!!

As a Democrat I acknowledge that many Republicans voted for President Obama for one of two good reasons: 1) to keep Hillary out of the White House, they turned out in primaries to vote Obama, and; in the general election, although John McCain was the nominee, the Republicans understood that he was selected by Democrats crossing over in open primaries to knock out Romney. Turn-about is fair play. Now that we have had some time to reflect, we probably should not do this to our country again. Neither Hillary or Romney would have been as bad a choice as what we got.

Where were all these posters when the last administration was running this country into the ground faster than a cat can lick its you know what?

It is absolutely astounding that they accept no blame for anything that occurred the past 8 years. They blame it all on Clinton and the 7 months of Obama.

No sane individual could possibly believe that! They are obviously repeating things they have heard without really thinking about it.

At least I hope so.....These 29% are running around lose among us. That is SCARY!

Oh please, everyone wants their moment in the spotlight. Obama didn't RIP anyone and they want to RIP back for what exactly? Now the 911 caller in the Gates nonsense is holding press conferences because she is feeling vilified. Give me a break.

Now she is going to be on every TV show for the next 2 weeks and will probably write a tell all book.

It's a 'jobless recovery' and everyone knows it. Obama was stating the obvious so that we all know he is aware that things are still not good.

How can you determine the recession is over when the real GDP is on a roller coaster? rising and falling then rising and falling again and again!. Its every sane person hope that, this recession is over but please refrain from giving people false hope!

Here we go again – using a canon to slay a fly. The media creates false impression by using hyperboles or words like "mock" when the President is merely clarifying a point. End result: The uneducated or hate filled droolers fall for it and go into panic or venom spewing mode.

Did he even read the story before commenting on it? Shoot first...ask questions later is the norm in Obamaland. I think folks are starting to understand who this idiot really is.

Enough!!! Don't you people have anything better to do than write negative comments about President Obama? He's much smarter and works much harder than the boob that was in office before him!

  168. Intent is Key

Newsweek is just trying to sell magazines. The title, "the Recession is Over" gives consumers false confidence, which could erode public support for the stimulus and give false hope that could lead to another downturn. Consumer confidence can only go so far.

The President is simply trying to put the current conditions into perspective. The recession, for all intensive purposes, is far from over and the work is not done.

I wish the media will stop picking at Obama over everything he says and does! He is doing a fine job! Being President of the United States is the most difficult job in the world and Obama is doing the best he can for all of us.

I love all of these comments about how terrible it is to criticize the President and call him stupid, etc. And then the rest of the comment is about how stupid Bush is/was and how we don't see Cheney or Bush out there fixing the economy. Wow. The pot calling the kettle black. and please, jump all over me now calling me racist because I used the words black and President in the same comment, like Democrats tend to do whenever race is brought up.

Funny how the those who used to say "Don't slam the president, his job is tough" for the last 8 years is now the ones with the pitchforks, while the ones who wanted to lynch the last commander in chief refuse to acknowledge that the current commander in chief is no better and no worse than the last. He is following his own agenda, and refuses to listen to the other side.

I'm proud to be an American, and I believe it won't be until people go back to acting like a country instead of a party that real change will happen.
