Obama mocks Newsweek cover, Newsweek hits back

Obama is mocking Newsweek's latest cover.
Obama is mocking Newsweek's latest cover.

(CNN) - Newsweek magazine got some unsolicited PR Wednesday from President Obama, but it wasn't exactly a ringing endorsement of periodical's latest issue.

At a North Carolina town-hall health care event, Obama asked if anyone had seen the latest cover of Newsweek that boldly declares, "The Recession is Over!"

"I don't know whether you've seen the cover of the latest Newsweek magazine on the rack at the grocery store, but the cover says: 'The Recession is Over,'" the president said as part of his prepared remarks at the event.

"I imagine you might have found that news a little startling," Obama continued. "I know I did."

Obama went on to say while certain indicators are improving, like the stock market and home sales, "That's little comfort if you are one of the folks who have lost their job."

The article in question - with the sub-headline of 'Good Luck Surviving the Recovery' - actually says much the same as Obama did Wednesday - that leading indicators appear to suggest the recession is nearing an end, but the recovery is likely to be a slow process.

"When economists proclaim a recession over, they're celebrating a technicality: they mean economic output has stopped contracting," Newsweek's Daniel Gross writes. "And while that is good news, you might wait a while before adding Judy Garland's rendition of 'Happy Days Are Here Again' to your iPod."

UPDATE: Gross has issued a response to the president in a posting on Newsweek.com entitled, "Obama rips Newsweek's cover. We rip back."

"The article notes—as Obama's speech does—that the discussion surrounding the end of the recession is largely a technical discussion ("GDP growth alone can't feed a family, or a pay a mortgage") and that we face tough economic times and a recovery that will feel a lot like a recession," says Gross.

"It's common to hear journalists complain of being overworked. And in this case, it's true. In addition to writing the first draft of history, we seem to be writing the first draft of the president's speeches," he also says.

Point in case – Asian4Hillary comment is exactly what my post was about. The President put the title in perspective and some right wing nut job went over the deep end.

I'm ashamed of people who criticize their President every time he swats a fly or shares an opinion.

I respect my brilliant President. He's the first President in my lifetime who I have complete faith in his leadership, and I'm 54 years old.

Why so hateful and disrespectful – I know you're used to Bush who didn't deserve respect, but be grateful and get on your KNEES and thank God you finally got a wise and moral President.

President Obama is doing an amazing job!

He inherited an absolute mess and in only 6 months, he has stabilized the housing, financial, banking and auto industries, revived science, improved our standing in the world, begun bringing our troops home from Iraq and is on track to deliver substantial healthcare reform. He obviously can't turn the Bush Recession around that quickly, but we are on our way. Go OBAMA!

    BEST vote I ever cast!

It was irresponsible of Newsweek to put this on their front cover, knowing full well people will only read the headline and not buy the magazine to read the entire article. Well, if Newsweek is "hitting back" (how ridiculous!), then they can't be in the "tank" for Obama now can they? Of course, anything negative about Obama is going to wind up the Rethuglicans to a frenzy so they can attack him for "not knowing all the facts before he speaks". He knows what he is talking about. Can anyone imagine the further mess we would have been in had McCain/Palin been elected?! I shudder to think!!

As a Democrat I acknowledge that many Republicans voted for President Obama for one of two good reasons: 1) to keep Hillary out of the White House, they turned out in primaries to vote Obama, and; in the general election, although John McCain was the nominee, the Republicans understood that he was selected by Democrats crossing over in open primaries to knock out Romney. Turn-about is fair play. Now that we have had some time to reflect, we probably should not do this to our country again. Neither Hillary or Romney would have been as bad a choice as what we got.

Where were all these posters when the last administration was running this country into the ground faster than a cat can lick its you know what?

It is absolutely astounding that they accept no blame for anything that occurred the past 8 years. They blame it all on Clinton and the 7 months of Obama.

No sane individual could possibly believe that! They are obviously repeating things they have heard without really thinking about it.

At least I hope so.....These 29% are running around lose among us. That is SCARY!

Oh please, everyone wants their moment in the spotlight. Obama didn't RIP anyone and they want to RIP back for what exactly? Now the 911 caller in the Gates nonsense is holding press conferences because she is feeling vilified. Give me a break.

Now she is going to be on every TV show for the next 2 weeks and will probably write a tell all book.

It's a 'jobless recovery' and everyone knows it. Obama was stating the obvious so that we all know he is aware that things are still not good.

How can you determine the recession is over when the real GDP is on a roller coaster? rising and falling then rising and falling again and again!. Its every sane person hope that, this recession is over but please refrain from giving people false hope!

Here we go again – using a canon to slay a fly. The media creates false impression by using hyperboles or words like "mock" when the President is merely clarifying a point. End result: The uneducated or hate filled droolers fall for it and go into panic or venom spewing mode.

Did he even read the story before commenting on it? Shoot first...ask questions later is the norm in Obamaland. I think folks are starting to understand who this idiot really is.

Enough!!! Don't you people have anything better to do than write negative comments about President Obama? He's much smarter and works much harder than the boob that was in office before him!

  18. Intent is Key

Newsweek is just trying to sell magazines. The title, "the Recession is Over" gives consumers false confidence, which could erode public support for the stimulus and give false hope that could lead to another downturn. Consumer confidence can only go so far.

The President is simply trying to put the current conditions into perspective. The recession, for all intensive purposes, is far from over and the work is not done.

I wish the media will stop picking at Obama over everything he says and does! He is doing a fine job! Being President of the United States is the most difficult job in the world and Obama is doing the best he can for all of us.

I love all of these comments about how terrible it is to criticize the President and call him stupid, etc. And then the rest of the comment is about how stupid Bush is/was and how we don't see Cheney or Bush out there fixing the economy. Wow. The pot calling the kettle black. and please, jump all over me now calling me racist because I used the words black and President in the same comment, like Democrats tend to do whenever race is brought up.
