WAKARUSA, Indiana (CNN) - President Barack Obama announced Wednesday that the federal government will provide $2.4 billion in grants for the development of more fuel-efficient, battery-powered automobiles.

Obama made the announcement during a visit to an RV manufacturing plant in Elkhart County, Indiana - hard hit by the economic downturn.

More wasted money from a man, Barack Obama, that wastes more and more money every single day. No one wants electric cars. To big and bulky, to short of a range, no place to quickly recharge them. They are nothing but toys for liberals to look at.

Excellent idea. We can't let China beat us in this technology and own the patents for the next 20 years.

Where are the Republicans who say the stimulus isn't working?

This will create jobs that will stay in this country.

We lost 5 million high paying jobs out of the country while Bush was president.

This is a good thing, however where is this money coming from? The spending seems to have no end, did we cut spending in another area to free up funding for this? CNN how about reporting the facts and not just opinons.

This is a much better use of the money than overpaying for clunkers to subsidize Toyota and Honda. There are a few very exciting new American companies doing this development work so I hope it's not all going to GM, Chrysler and Ford.

Thank you President Obama for spending money in this country on Americans unlike your predecessor who spent our money on a foreign country in a war based on a lie!

The president is doing a wonderful job he receives an A+ from us. We hope the health care plan passes with the single care provision, he is brilliant and wonderful to listen to someone with his brain. We don't need the insurance because we are retired but the country needs the insurance plan to keep people working. We suffered with the horrible deductables we faced years ago.

We cannot believe the "No" group! More people need to understand what the health care plan will mean to the country.

We believe Solar can work for houses as well as cars. RV's can be completely sufficient on Solar. There is a lot for people to understand about Solar.

For all the "real smart and intelligent" folks on the board who whine and don't research anything, the money is coming from the stimulus plan. It's the "single largest investment in advanced battery technology for hybrid and electric-drive vehicles ever made" and will create tens of thousands of manufacturing jobs. The key word here is jobs folks, jobs. I suspect the folks out of a job right now are pretty grateful, unlike some of you.

As another fyi, recipient companies would be required to match the grants with their own spending.

Lastly, do you want some cheese with that w(h)ine?

The more I see and hear President Obama, the less I feel that he is aware of the mainstream of this country and what makes America great. Electric cars are great ideas for the overcrowded cities where trips are of short duration and vehicles predominantly move people with limited stuff. But once you get out of the cities and into the heartland of America, where the true spirit and independent spirit of America was born and fostered by the frontier and rural environment, the distances to be traveled and the amount of things to be carried far exceed the capacity of electric cars to travel in comfort. The heartland of this country needs long-range, medium to large capacity vehicles to get where we are going be it for work or pleasure. "See the USA in a Chevrolet" was done in an Impala, not an Aveo. Electric cars work great for Chicago or Hawaii but aren't worth a hoot for the Great Plains, the Mountain States or the Southwest.

Can't this man stop spending money we DON'T have. Someone is going to have to pay for all this over spending......Middle class anyone!

Keep on spending. Geithner said the taxes for my middle income family are going up to pay for all of this reckless spending, then BHO shut him up. BASIC ECONOMICS FOLKS...we are going into inflation because of the HUGE debt. Even Evan Bayh, DEMOCRAT SENATOR, said over the weekend that the country is near bankruptcy.

That's a good start. Nissan is coming with an electric vehicle. We need to start manufacturing quality fuel efficient/electric/bio-diesel cars before all we see left on the road are Nissans, Toyatas and Hondas.
