Obama announces $2.4 billion in grants for cleaner cars

WAKARUSA, Indiana (CNN) – President Barack Obama announced Wednesday that the federal government will provide $2.4 billion in grants for the development of more fuel-efficient, battery-powered automobiles.

Obama made the announcement during a visit to an RV manufacturing plant in Elkhart County, Indiana - hard hit by the economic downturn.

Main stream battery powered vehicles with any kind of decent range are years away from production, and even farther away from being affordable. This grant will help the development effort, and create high paying research jobs, but it's a drop in the bucket compared to what it will cost to make electric cars affordable, durable, and long range with quick charge capability such that a person would own one as their only transportation vehicle.

Spending money on stimulating new American business and cleaner technology is a worthy investment indeed. This will pay off big in the long run, despite what the ignorant naysayers in these comments and elsewhere may want you to think.

If we found the way to the moon, we can find the way to have cleaner air in this country by changing from gas to electricity in our vehicles.

Impossible? No. Look how big the first computers were and in a few years we have one tiny chip that stores more data than a room-sized computer of years ago.

Don't let the pessimists get to you, Indiana. Just do what has been long overdue for this country.

Thank you in advance Indiana !

If this was a good idea, smart people would have invested in it. Government investing in industry.... if this was smart, why did the communists stop doing it? This is just another waste....like Nobama Care.

This will have a long term postive snowball effect on the economy, more jobs stay in the country and less reliance and dollars going to other countries. . .

At least he is trying to get something done through using American innovation. The other side so far has No on stimulus, No to budget,, which includes monies from the two wars we are in. No on Sotomoyer, No to money for clunkers, No to health reform.Shouting down and disrupting the town meetings for health reform for people who do want to listen. With no answers or the same ole answers they have had and used for the past 8-years prior. Tax cuts. Look where that got us, time to try something new. If Obama's plan does not work then by all means vote him out. In the meantime, status quo is not an option. At the rate we are going now, it will only get worse unless something changes.

the question is what happen when all these ppl that are buying these new cars from the cash for clunkers dont have a job in six months. We will be in the same place before with the mortage industries but with cars...go figure....man with no sense of direction and no idea of how to run a country.

I can see the anti american Republicans are here today.... glad I'm a hard working DEMOCRAT unlike useless Republicans who do nothing but gripe about how bad their pitiful lives are.
    What a waste....
On the other hand, the President has been ACTIVE and PROGRESSIVE in his efforts to get us out of the MESS that YES, BUSH got us into. Deny all you want, but the MAJORITY knows this to be true.
YELL and SCREAM teabaggers. birthers, whatever you call yourselves..... the AMERICAN PEOPLE are tired of Republican lies and fear mongering.
Congratulations Mr. President, job well done. Keep it up..

Oh Man....Obama did something...I"m so mad! I don't know what to write yet, I'm still waiting for my Grand PoohBlah.....err, I mean my party leaders to tell me what to think and say...but I'm ready....I'm ready to spill the words of propoganda and lies as soon as they tell me what they are!

Oh yea, almost forgot: Do away with ALL socialist programs, not just cherry pick them. Disband the military, tear up the roads and fire the police departments and fire departments. No more nanny state organizations. If people can't protect themselves or property, then too bad, let them die! We don't need no government or military taking care of those free loaders!

Why can't all American car companies do like Ford did, and buy hybrid technology from a Japanese competitor?

I actually like this idea of Obama's. I know I am not a fan of his spending spree presidency, but this was a good one. Pump money into the economy and get cleaner cars off the road. (Disregard Fax's report to the contrary)

Good sound investment. All those who cry and moan were the very ones demaning that we spend Trillions on a forigen war, against a country that did nothing to the US. The only possible reason for there to be so much hate towards this President is his race; because the economy is better, we are moving toward healthcare reform, he rescues Americans taken by foriegn governments or Pirates. I bet these same haters just loved GWB

Ok, we know some of you despise OUR President, no matter what. We get it. It is your right to whine and complain and act like spoiled children. You can't even acknowledge anything good if it came from a black man, can you? Admit it, at least to yourselves. Stop crying about the race card and look in the mirror and realize who you really are.

By the way, a grant has to be applied for and accepted. It isn't automatic that 2.4 billion will be spent.

And quit telling us what 'no one wants'. You speak for yourself and yourself alone.

It isn't up to the government to subsidize another program. Sorry but not everyone wants to drive some ugly prius or smart car. The government is going to dictate what cars we will drive in the future. GM=Government motors.........I will NEVER own another GM car, since all they will be making will be cheap little cars.
