WASHINGTON (CNN) - The U.S. Senate on Thursday confirmed Judge Sonia Sotomayor as the first Hispanic justice on the Supreme Court.
Sotomayor was confirmed in 68-31 vote. Nine Republicans joined a unanimous Democratic caucus in supporting her nomination.
The 55-year-old federal appeals court judge will be the 111th person to sit on the high court, and the third woman justice.

Congrats (new) Justice Sotomayor! You will make a fantastic justice!
Yay! You go, girl!!!!!
Congrats Justice Sotomayor, and the hispanic community
case closed!
As usual a majority of the Republicans said "NO" to her confirmation. NO Healthcare Reform....NO Stimulus...NO to 2nd "Cash for Clunkers". What a negative group. The" PARTY of NO'.
Wow. Nine Republicans actually did the right thing? I'm going to write this date down for posterity.
Good Luck, Madam Justice!!!!!!!
Very happy that this hard working woman received this honor. From her record, I can see that she will use the "law" to determine her decisions and not her personal feelings. Congratulations to you Ms. Sotomoyar.
Obama won again!!!! Oh happy day.....oh happy day...
Excellent! Absolutely excellent. I believe that Justice Sotomayor will be the best addition to the Supreme Court that we have had in many years. I knew the Repubs could not muster up the nerve to shoot her down. Good. We need justices like her. May President Obama get the chance to name a few more. Good job.!
Sad day for all real americans! We need a revolution or we need to secede from this country and start a new country made up of white christain values. South Carolina over to mississippi would be just fine for our new country. Not sure how me would deal with south florida. Maybe send them all back to New York Puerto Rico and Cuba where they belong! Sarah Palin and Jeff Sessions would be our new presidents. Whos with me?
Excellent! After all the angst, demonizing, slander that the GOPers threw at her........... she is our newest Supreme Court Judge!
Brava Sonia!
congratulations...i had no doubt that sonia sotomayor would be nominated...now the senators that did not vote for her will face a tough election...get ready...
Supreme Court Justic Sotomayor.....I pray God will give you wisdom and discernment on this gifted journey you are on. May you bring much joy to our land. Congratulations!
It is so nice that we have another woman sitting on the highest court. It is about time, we need more females to balance it out. It is also nice to see a Latina, as the court needs to reflect the true "face of America", which is not made up of only white men.
That is awesome. Please give the manes of the senators who voted against her. They may be short term senators.
I am glad !
yeah
This is great News!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Obama knows what he is doing, great job Mr. President............I am behind you 100%.....My grade for you is A+....
Yeah!! This is wonderful news.
Once again John McCain chose the wrong side to kiss butt. McCain really needs to think for himself and quit siding with Rush and Karl.
Congrats to Justice Sotomayor!
It's another great day for Americans!
What a sad state of affairs that this is the only kind of person whom they could offer up for such an important position. This woman, and I use the term loosely, is a disgrace to the females of the world. I will be doing my best to try to get the Democratic representatives in Florida who voted for her, out of office. I am sick to death of them not listening to what the voters want and this is just another item on the list!
VERY slowly we are starting to see the Court reflect the people it represents. If this Court were a true representation of the American people, then we would see roughly 50% female justices. And we would see black, white, Hispanic, & Asian representation for sure.
But as long as the justices are fair & impartial & interpret the law as written, then hopefully we will be on the right road.
For the conservative Republicans who didn't support Sotomayor because they thought she would "try to insert her political leanings" into her rulings- uh, pardon me, but isn't that exactly what the ultra conservative justices have done for years???
I'm glad she got confirmed, but if there's one thing I'm tired of, it's the hypocrisy of right-wing complaints that she would not rule on the merits of the law WHILE COMPLETELY IGNORING ANTONIN SCALIA!!! Scalia charged the court was taking sides in the "culture war" in the Texas sodomy case – AND THAT'S RULING JUST ON THE MERIT OF THE LAW???!!! Either criticize Scalia for putting another value ahead of the law, or just shut up!
