Jenny Sanford will live in Charleston while her husband lives in the governor's mansion in Columbia.

WASHINGTON (CNN) – South Carolina First Lady Jenny Sanford and her four boys are moving out of the governor's mansion in Columbia and back to their home in Charleston for the upcoming school year.

The wife of South Carolina governor Mark Sanford announced the news in a statement e-mailed to reporters on Friday, days after the family returned from a two-week vacation to an undisclosed location in Europe.

"While we will be leaving Columbia, we will return often, and I will remain engaged in activities in my role as First Lady, acknowledging that my responsibilities to my family come first," she said.

Mark and Jenny Sanford's four boys have attended Heathwood Hall Episcopal School in Columbia, but they will presumably enroll in a new school in the Charleston area.

Updated with Mark Sanford's statement after the jump

The Sanfords have lived together in the governor's mansion on Arsenal Hill since 2003, when Mark was sworn in as governor, but the family has also spent a good deal of time in their private Charleston residence.

The couple have been working to repair their marriage after Sanford admitted to an extramarital affair with an Argentine woman in June. He has rebuffed calls for his resignation and says he plans to serve out the remainder of his second term.

In her statement, Sanford said she was thankful for "the overwhelming support and prayers we have received from people all across South Carolina."

"I am literally in awe of how blessed we are to have such love and support from family and friends, old and new," she said.

UPDATE: Mark Sanford's office issued the following statement on Jenny's move:

"The First Lady's Office has already put out a statement that speaks for the family, on this decision that we felt best, both for our process of reconciliation, and for the boys in the upcoming school year," Sanford said. "I stand by this family decision and accordingly ask the media to honor the zone of privacy that Jenny has asked for on behalf of the healing process and our four boys going forward."

UPDATE: Gov. Mark Sanford issued a statement on the decision Friday afternoon asking for privacy for his family.

"The First Lady's Office has already put out a statement that speaks for the family, on this decision that we felt best, both for our process of reconciliation, and for the boys in the upcoming school year," he said.

"I stand by this family decision and accordingly ask the media to honor the zone of privacy that Jenny has asked for on behalf of the healing process and our four boys going forward."

Well, I can only think that is appropriate for a women who's husband said " he had found his soul mate " in another women. It's just a shame that her hurt is so public.

What took Jenny so long to leave the mansion. I hope she goes on
with her life with her boys! Sanford is a liar and Ole Dixie should be
embarassed.

Genny   August 7th, 2009 11:29 pm ET

A man gets up before the entire nation and say that is mistress is his "soulmate" and he will TRY to fall back in love with his wife is pretty cut and dry in my book. Jenny Sanford should have left him that day. WTG First Lady Sanford!!!!

Madge, LA   August 7th, 2009 11:23 pm ET

No one comes first in this family, least of all the boys. I've never seen such selfishness.

So South Carolinians will have to get in line. Their governor is bed hopping and the First Lady couldn't care less.

DaveinSC   August 7th, 2009 11:17 pm ET

It's nice to see so many people who do not live in SC give thier thoughts on how thing should transpire here. Sanford has been a good governor, by no means a perfect one, but good none the less. He made a mistake, a very bad mistake, one that was very bad for his family, but he is only human. let he who is without sin cast the first stone. he's done nothing different than over 50% of maried men have done. I have a friend who had the audacity to say that trhis will affect her children because they looked up to Sanford as a role model. How pathetic that is to even say. If you have thought your children to look up to people other than yourself, as thier parent, you have done your children an injustice. I am not surprised by such thinking, just look at who is our president.

wendy   August 7th, 2009 11:05 pm ET

one, sleeping with another person while you are married is wrong doesnt matter if you are republican or democrat. clinton cheated hello, apparently some like to even justify right and wrong with party group. Wrong is wrong, duh. I worry about her children and what they are going through

Mac Texas   August 7th, 2009 10:55 pm ET

Perhaps the backlash against Sanford is not so much what he did but because he did it after very publicly calling for Pres. Clinton's resignation for doing the same thing, just like Newt Gingrich called for Clinton's impeachment for having Oral sex in the blue room while Newt was doing the same thing right down the hall in the same building. It is known as being a hypocrite and a liar. I personally do not care who is sleeping with whom because that is their problem, but to condem others for doing the same thing is just hypocrisy in it's highest form. "The Family Values Party"? I think not!

Lisa, Las Vegas NV   August 7th, 2009 10:45 pm ET

The Republican are proof positive as not only the party of No, but of hypocrites. Why was not this guy impeached? Why was the media playing down his "little indiscretion"? As a Democrat, I wanted to see if he would "man up" and quit. First, I was so glad Jenny was not standing by his side at the press conference. That was pretty cool. But then it got better. Once the press did catch up with her, she was on the move! Not hiding, not shoving cameras out of the way and not broke down. I was so impressed by her honesty. Now she's straight talk! Two thumbs up for Ms. Jenny - YOU GO GIRL!

Sylvia   August 7th, 2009 10:41 pm ET

He is in love with the Other Woman, couldn't anyone see that! This man, if he has half the stones he seems to have, needs to stop leading the wife around and go be with the Other Woman. The emails proved it.

KC   August 7th, 2009 10:08 pm ET

Good for you Jenny Sanford moving out of governor's mansion is the right thing, now if we can only get Mr. Sandford to move out :-D

Annie, Atlanta   August 7th, 2009 10:02 pm ET

My heart goes out to Jenny Sanford and her sons, and I'm a Democrat. No one should have to endure such public embarassment.

Evelyn   August 7th, 2009 9:42 pm ET

I applaud Jenny for removing herself & their young boys, from living in the same household, with such a deceitful, untrustworthy sneaky husband & father, to his wife & young boys.

Such an example of a father to his young boys is disgraceful.

How powerful leaders, can use such poor judgment ; then try to gloss it over, in the public's eye, is most disgusting to me.

Gina   August 7th, 2009 9:39 pm ET

She has to move back to the home they own because it will be hers until the youngest is 18 if Mark divorces her. Plus while he is making $ she needs to invest in that home. That is an investment for her children's future. If Mark ends up with his long faced look a like lover Maria he will become a father figure to her children. He will become more loyal to Maria's kids because his own boys probably hate him. Jenny is a smart woman and is making a very protective move for her boys.

JJ   August 7th, 2009 9:38 pm ET

While I thinks it's a personal matter between the two of them, I really feel for her. She didn't ask for or need the personal embarrassment.

maryann   August 7th, 2009 9:37 pm ET

While it is expected to love your children, Children grow up and leave home. If you don't work on your marriage, when the kids leave home, you are left with nothing. Maybe if the wife of governor Sanford had made 'him' her first priority, he wouldn't have gone to another woman's bed for love and comfort.

Smackie28   August 7th, 2009 9:33 pm ET

Good for her. Sanford is an embarassment, After his rambling statement he should have resigned. Then the disasterous interview which he claimed he loved his mistress was appalling. Jenny should move on, she is still relatively young and attractive. She deserves better.

jdquest   August 7th, 2009 8:57 pm ET

I applaud her appoach to this problem. It really is not anyone's business how she handles things and she deserves all the privacy she can get no matter what her position is in life, I hope the family can TRULY be mended.

Dave   August 7th, 2009 8:55 pm ET

And this is news why?

Young at heart   August 7th, 2009 8:52 pm ET

It seems that Jenny is blaming gay marriage [the demise of American values] for the Gov's hypocritical straying.

It must be hard to see a worn, tired, middle-aged woman who is unloved by her husband in the mirror every day. Far better to blame gays than your own shortcomings.

At least her over-priviledged boys won't be smirking as they soon start a new school year at new schools.

Thanks for that, Dad !

eddie   August 7th, 2009 8:50 pm ET

Why does no one talk about the role of "The Family" in all of this? That pseudo- Christian cult that Sandford is a part of? They claim to be God's chosen people, and so are above the rules of others. This is why Sandford voted to impeach Clinton, yet refuses to resign after the same act. This shadow organization also claims Sen. Ensign as a chosen one. It's more than creepy, it's downright scary. I call on the media to grow a set, and report on the influence of this cult on our elected officials!!!

arnie   August 7th, 2009 8:20 pm ET

You go Girl! Good for you. The entire Republican party = liars + Hypocrites. And I am not a Democrat so don't come at me with that liberal crap.

Todd (not the Alaska Separatist)   August 7th, 2009 8:17 pm ET

Any more dim-witted Repugs out there that buy into the whole "family values" song and dance while the real reason for their job is to cut breaks for their rich campaign contributors? Y'all are so gullible. What saps, what more-roons you Repugs are. Say "crony capitalism". Can you say "crony capitalism". I knew you could.

Seems like Jenny Sanford has had enough her husband's "family values" routine and doing what is necessary to protect herself and her children.

Mary   August 7th, 2009 8:13 pm ET

I feel so sorry for the boys and for his wife. It is nothing new for s husand to be unfaithful to a faithful wife more o in the political world it seems but none the less it has to be very difficult for the children. my prayes are with them and I sincerely hope that the lives of the children and of her are or will be full of good things to come.

Young at heart   August 7th, 2009 8:12 pm ET

Since you're moving out of the house you shared with your husband, maybe you might like a date for this Saturday evening as well ? Separated women are fair game, am I right ?

Hawaii gal   August 7th, 2009 8:01 pm ET

It's about time she left her loser husband. Mark Sanford embarassed his wife, over and over, in public by saying he was "trying to fall back in love with his wife" and that his Argentine lover was his "soul mate". He does not deserve Jenny, who has acted with class throught this whole ordeal. I am glad she said "enough is enough". Now if the people South Carolina would just demand that Sanford is thrown out of office because he disappeared for days on end and lied about his whereabouts, justice would be complete. Mark Sanford is a hypocritical jerk.

CJ Smith   August 7th, 2009 7:52 pm ET

Jenny, what courage you have. You seem very determined to get out of that house to a more restful and private environment. I applaud you so much for that so your children can have a seemingly happy life. I just hope and pray you can recover from the mess, disgrace and humiliation your husband made against you, your boys, and the State of SC. I hope you also find a "true" man (and there aresome out there) that will sweep you off your feet. What goes around comes around. I hope you find your soul mate. You deserve one that will treat you and your boys with respect. God bless you in your own efforts to recover from all of this. I personally would not be so tolerant.

David   August 7th, 2009 7:23 pm ET

Mark Sandford only did to his wife, what the GOP/Republicans have been doing to the American people for the past 8 years.

1. Make a commitment in public

2. Behind closed doors, do the exact opposite.

Now his wife is doing to Mark Sandford, what Americans are doing with the GOP/Republicans.

1. Reject them and move on with their lives with people they can trust.

So now it's time for Mark to pay his supporters harass his wife and children, and disrupt their peaceful lives.

Hell hath no fury like a Republican Rejected.

The frothing fury aroused in most women by a straying husband is disqualifying many good men from office. The list of effective leaders who have had an occasional dalliance contains many famous and respected names. Franklin Roosevelt, Dwight Eisenhower, Lyndon Johnson, John Kennedy, Robert Kennedy, John Edwards, and many, many, many, many more.

Shall we extend our scorn to those whose family life is not up to June Cleaver's standards? The Reagan family was pretty dysfunctional. Albert Einstein's children would not speak to him, so his equations should not be taught in college?

What about personal discipline and self control? Should a fat person be allowed to hold office if she can't even control what she puts in her mouth? I think not.

Alpha males through the centuries have always had multiple women. This is true in other species of mammals. Christian sexual ethics restricts sex to marriage - one lifetime sexual partner for each man and each woman. Now that American society has rejected Christian sexual ethics, is it any wonder that the natural polygamous tendencies of men is being atct out more, at least for those alpha meles that can attract multiple females?

Jenny stays marrked to the Governor even after he's had another woman as a concubine because he is an alpha male and she is able to maintain her place as his chief consort, just like the other wives of alpha males who have been in a similar situation, e.g., Clinton, Spitzer, JFK, FDR, Martin Luther King, Ray Charles, Jacob (in the Bible) etc. The women who say that they would dump their husbands in the same situation are typically married to beta or gamma males.

Women stand by their cheating men, and men stand by their cheating women (it DOES work both ways, you know), for a number of reasons which are not mutually exclusive: 1) they still love their partner and feel that the years they have already devoted to the relationship are worth fighting for; 2) they feel that divorce is against their religious beliefs; 3) they prefer being separated while retaining the benefits of still being legally married; and 4) they somehow feel that it is better for the children. There are other, less desirable reasons such as money, pre-nups, and loss of prestige, but I think we can count Jenny out on these scores - she comes from a wealthy and prestigious family and has plenty of outside interests.

Sanford is a hypocrite and there is no denying that. However, I have my own sins - why would I cast stones at him? It is up to the people of SC to determine his fate, not me because he is not MY governor. I have enough to worry about with my own!

And second Ol Marks not the greatest governor this state has ever seen either, so he deserves everything he has coming.

Wow...seriously, with your economy in the tank, your armed forces embroiled in battles that kill young soldiers every day fighting for god knows what your ex-president Bush found worthy of fighting for but not worthy enough to tell the American people the truth about, American children starving and families without decent medical coverage losing their homes down every street, I would think that most of you would be saying...who cares, move on, next subject, big deal.

Nah...let's slam the guy for cheating on his wife and praise her for continuing to drag it out openly in the media by EMAILING the media (wasn't she just asking for privacy a couple of months ago??). If only someone could make money selling tickets for this show, you would have the completed the American dream.

Renea B   August 7th, 2009 5:29 pm ET

It's about time. Once a cheater, always a cheater. Jenny, you deserve better. Move on.

This country would be a better place without Gov Sanford, Lindsey Graham, South Carolina and the rest of the South!!!

jfs Memhis, Tn   August 7th, 2009 5:18 pm ET

Well if she ends up a single Mom with four kids sure hope she has Health Insurance. There's many hard working mothers in the same situation that don't get alimony or inurance benefits. Those are the mothers that I have a concern for, Ms. Sanford is of priviledge.

MJ   August 7th, 2009 5:17 pm ET

Let us not be the first to cast stones – or forget – or forgive .. Does anyone remember Kennedy and a very dead young woman?

JFGinOKC   August 7th, 2009 5:16 pm ET

But Wyoming Democrat......

Are you really being fair to Sarah Palin? I mean, she demonstrated her commitment to education by devoting 6 years to achieving her bachelor's degree. Oh wait.....that's only a 4 year degree, isn't it? OK never mind.
She demonstrated her commitment to public office several times too.
She was elected to the Wasilla City Council after all! Oh wait....she quit that position, didn't she? OK never mind.
Then she was elected Mayor of Wasilla. Oh wait....didn't she quit that position too? OK never mind.
Then she was elected Governor of Alaska. Oh wait....she just quit that one.
And now people actually believe she can be elected President? Oh wait....didn't the recent poll numbers show 40% or less in favor of that?

One thing we do know is that this lady loves the spotlight. She was just on the wrong bus. She shouldn't have been on the bus to DC, but rather the bus to Hollywood or Nashville, or wherever Rush Limbaugh lives.

Vickie   August 7th, 2009 5:12 pm ET

Mrs. Sanford is independentlh wealthy. She does not need him.

Tatianna   August 7th, 2009 5:11 pm ET

I stand by my previous post. Knowing one or more dems would attack her. When Sanford or a sitting rep president looks in the camera eye, pointing his finger saying I did not have sexual relations with that woman. When Sanford or a setting rep president pays settlement for sexual harrassment lawsuit, then you can get back at me. Bubbas back hoping to rewrite his impeached legacy. I never held any rep politician in the image of Messiah. I never held belief a rep president can reverse ocean waves, heal the planet, bring world-wide peace n harmony. Dems voted for a Savior, I voted for a president. Proof that Barack is the Obamessiah – Obamas flock has millions of sheep!

Realist   August 7th, 2009 5:10 pm ET

Good to see all these people out here who haven't the slightest clue about marriage. Until you've been through that experience, you're unable to give any quality advice. Stop wasting blog space.

Tommy   August 7th, 2009 5:03 pm ET

I thinks its high time the governor moves out as well (after resigning).

And to think this guy, along with Dave Vitter (aka prostitute lover), Larry Craig (aka men's room bathroom stall "operator"), Bob Livingston, yada yada, on and on... led the charge for Pres. Clinton's impeachment. And all of these imbeciles remain unaccountable after refusing to resign in light of their own struggles with morality. (Except Livingston, who had enough smarts and possibly enough hubris to leave when he should have).

I'm sure after much prayerful consideration, the governor will be back on a plane for argentina to kneel at the altar of adultery. I don't think amount of prayerful consideration can save this numbskull from roasting in purgatory from the number of commandments he has broken. If being a hypocrite was a cardinal sin, then EVERY republican to have died would be dangling their toes in the River Styx.

Aim high!

klieglamp   August 7th, 2009 4:59 pm ET

The hypocrisy in the white Governor makes problems in the black community look small.

What a loser he and the state of SC. Ever hear of impeachment folks?!

A Wyoming Democrat   August 7th, 2009 4:59 pm ET

Doc...you're too funny! Sarah Palin is not a governor. She couldn't even hack her first term. She will never be a president and MOST people know it. She has nothing to do with Jenny Stanford anyway. Jenny is a classier, smarter, better educated woman than Palin could ever hope to be.

Richard Puente   August 7th, 2009 4:57 pm ET

Forgiveness comes alot slower than the sharp cut of betrayel. The way the Republican Party continues to make excuses just adds salt to the wound.
Get on with your life Miss Sanford, you're holding together well.. Find yourself a respectible man who will not betray you.

JFGinOKC   August 7th, 2009 4:53 pm ET

Good for Jenny! I think she should divorce him and make him court her if he wants her back. AND he should resign – not because of his sexual escapades, but because when he disappeared for 6 days and wouldn't respond to his desperate staff when they repeatedly tried to reach him, he clearly demonstrated his disregard for the voters of SC who elected him, and he was totaly guilty of abandoning his responsibilities as governor. What a joke this guy is with his fine family values and work ethic!

Plus, there are plenty or women right here in the USA with less than stellar morals who could have benefitted from some free dinners, nice hotel rooms, and illicit attention. I think Sanford is unpatriotic for not doing his economic stimulus stateside!

T.G.   August 7th, 2009 4:49 pm ET

Is Mrs. Sanford moving out of the governor's mansion a means of reconciliation or separation?

Bill Will   August 7th, 2009 4:46 pm ET

Maybe Mark said "Argentinian Tail" not "Appalachian Trail?"

Big Bill from Brooklyn   August 7th, 2009 4:46 pm ET

About time, girlfriend. About time.

Doc   August 7th, 2009 4:45 pm ET

Jenny Sanford moving out of governor's mansion, "Yeah Right" She is not dumpping this scum bag because of his power, and money. Jenny, time for you to stand on your owen two feet, and be a real lady like Gov. Sarah Palin. Sarah Palin our next President in 2012.

Stand Tall Jenny   August 7th, 2009 4:43 pm ET

I can not believe the post on here bashing Jenny Stanford. She is a smart, attractive woman with a very successful track record of her own. When did it become a "fault of character" to try to work out a troubled marriage and forgive someone. She had already moved out in order to keep her dignity. It is Mark Sanford that is the slim bag here. Makes you wonder if he would have ever become gov. without her. I seriously doubt it. I feel for this woman and believe she will do well without him. I wish her well. As for Mark, I hope his career is toast. I also echo Chip's post.

The institution of marriage have been comercialized upto the point it has lost its true meaning! real mean becareful with Gold diggers. Who just comes in for the green bills.

Adele   August 7th, 2009 4:43 pm ET

I always wonder why women always stay with men who have affairs. Look Mrs. Sandford, the fish pond is very shallow you can catch a lot of fish.

Richie   August 7th, 2009 4:41 pm ET

When is Mark moving out?

david   August 7th, 2009 4:38 pm ET

jenny has made her choice and that is to stay with mark. mark too has made his choice and that is to be in love with another woman, not his legal wife, while continuing to stay married to jenny. seems like the two deserve each other, have each made their decision, so guessing everyone should butt out. if voters want him out of office, they can recall him and since there is no reported movement to recall him then south carolina approves of it all so guessing the rest of the usa should just butt out. my neighbor's wife looks good to me and she has been giving signals so might as well get some since everyone cheats anyway.

hehe   August 7th, 2009 4:38 pm ET

Hmm I wonder why...

jayel   August 7th, 2009 4:32 pm ET

Way to go Mrs. Sanford. This is the dignified way rather than make a spectacle and tabloid material out of it. You have a lot of class.

A Wyoming Democrat   August 7th, 2009 4:31 pm ET

She ought to divorce the cad. To hell with her duties as first lady of her state. Her husband didn't uphold his duties to her. I don't understand women who stand beside their cheating men. She seems like a strong woman and she should dump the guy and get on with life.

The Great Northwest   August 7th, 2009 4:30 pm ET

If my spouse had been gone and then told the world he had been "with his soulmate in South America ' as this idiot repeated to the whole world the door could not open fast enough to push him out a$$ over eakettle.
If that isnt telling his wife who is on the top rung and that the wife is out of sight and out of his mind what would it take to wake the wife up ?
Then this scumbag starts repeating from the Bible as if that will change him what a sneaking, cheating lier throw him under the bus and don't forget to include Ensign along with him.
Jenny and children start a new lifew/o this idiot you never deserved this creep

Ted   August 7th, 2009 4:30 pm ET

RD be careful about "slipping in the back door". I think there are sodomy laws in SC.

I am praying for this family. This man has no clue haow blessed he is to have a smart, beautiful wife that gave him four amazing boys. On top of it all, she gave up her career to launch his. I am amazed at the stupidity of men that would give all of this up to have an affair. let his soulmat write his speeches and run his campaign. He will miss her when she and his beautiful boys are gone. I applaud her strength and courage.

philip boutwell   August 7th, 2009 3:54 pm ET

what are the ages of the children? I've never heard. The wife is trying to consider all her options- too many people get a divorce too quickly , and to forgive and to give a 2nd chance- well, is that the not what we all who sin would wish.
To cast aside too quickly is what most people do. "He who is without sin cast the 1st stone". the gov must get counseling and if he NEVER has any contact with any other woman , he should be forgiven.
We jump on people so easily; if we err, what if others did the same to us?

A split-up played out in the media and the public eye, and this lady is trying to keep hold of what dignity she has left. I applaud the effort because it's not easy to do what she's doing, but I have to say this - divorce that guy, take him for every cent he has and demand child support/alimony and the family home. She is trying to keep herself together, but after what he's done, she should take him for everything he's got.

Jenny said she would leave the door open and it is now open. She is free (all people should always be anyway) to be in or out. It is about personal choice. It is a good opportunity to be herself again. If we cannot connect directly to God, it would be wise not to let anything else, I mean anything, including hypocrites in particular, twist our mind.

gordon peterson   August 7th, 2009 3:34 pm ET

mark sanford is just another person who says one thing and does another. whenever I hear the words" I am a christian", I cringe , because I usually know that person is a liar. politicians say it because they think it will bring them votes- and it usually does. how few of these people actually live the life they say- very few. religion is supposed to not be part of our government- why is then ? whether his wife stays with him or doesn't is of no importance to me. I am sick of reading about people like mark sanford and would hope that the media finds something of real importance to write about. I doubt that that will ever happen;however.

Really, if you are moving from the location of the man, then obvious things aren't working out, so let it go and move on with your life. Quite dragging those poor kids thru this mess. You go on a vacation with the man to Europe and us him for the trip, then return home to say you're moving out. These people are just ridiculous!

As for the "Governor," he needs to follow his own admonishment about Bill Clinton. And it's true, Bill's actions don't hold a candle to Sanford's.

nick   August 7th, 2009 3:26 pm ET

It is a sorry spectacle anyway you look at it especially the treeyoung gentlemen cought up in ths mess. The only thing thT galls me is that this guy was loud and obnoxious in his denunciation of Pres. Clinton and the fact that since the Regean administration we've been slapped in the with Republican pontificating about "family values" – we now know what they really meant by that open ended slogan and it is disgusting, sad, remorseful and enoughto make a saint blaspheme.

Jenny knew her marriage was on the rocks at least 8 years ago. So, she thought she would divert Mark's attention and keep him busy as South Carolina's governor. Shame on her! She inflicted her do nothing husband on South Carolinians. Since you really can't teach an old dog new tricks, he was also a do nothing governor. They should have sought counseling from a bonefied Christian pastor 8 years ago. Instead of playing these tick for tack games with other peoples' lives.

It may seem exciting to some people to have affairs outside of marriage.

But a good wife or husband is hard to find.

I don't know what goes on behind their closed doors, but outwardly she seems like a very good woman.

Ralph   August 7th, 2009 2:21 pm ET

Governor Sanford is a hypocritical D-Bag! He calls for others to resign when they have had marital indiscretions, then he stays in office. He says he's in love with his Patagonian soul-mate, then pretends that he and his wife are "working" on their marriage. He needs to live up to his own words: leave his office, leave his wife, and then leave for Argentina! Good bye to Mark! And my very best wishes to his ex-wife and her sons in their future happiness; maybe they'll find a GOOD man!

Chris   August 7th, 2009 2:20 pm ET

Well, every one is being politically correct but this really means we ain't working it out. Bye Mark and good riddance

Fredrick   August 7th, 2009 2:16 pm ET

Yeah, Matt, cause we all know that no Democrat would ever think of cheating on their spouse. Or lie about it to the American people. Or perjur themselves to Congress. Nope, not one Democrat would ever do that, because they have such high moral standards, right Matt?

Roofin Reality, Houston, Tx.   August 7th, 2009 2:14 pm ET

BTW, if the people of South Carolina wanted to recall their Governor, they could start the petition. And I think that time has passed. So, Sanford will stay until the end of his term. He may be too proud to resign.

Al, KS   August 7th, 2009 2:13 pm ET

She should stay in the Governors mansion...and throw his stuff out the window. Now that would be news.

Roofin Reality, Houston, Tx.   August 7th, 2009 2:12 pm ET

Tat from 12:38 fame,
NO ONE has attacked Jenny. Quite the contrary when you read all of the articles here.
I think you just wanted to bring the President and his lovely wife into the discussion for some reason.
And since you did, wasn't it President (then candidate) Obama who asked the press to back off of Palin's dtr? I think you may have misremembered (a la Roger Clemens) how things actually transpired. But do try again (that is, to add to the civil discourse of politcal banter).

Chris from NC   August 7th, 2009 2:11 pm ET

Ahhhhh yes...THOSE GOP moral values. see what happens mark....you cheat on your wife and BANG she leaves you.

If guys like sanford didn't push their Christian faith so much they wouldn't come off as such bad hypocrites when they screw up.

Hope she finds happines....this time with a true God fearing man....Democrat wouldn't hurt.

Mark is a hypocrite in denial and I cannot believe that South Carolina is going to sit there and be made a fool of.

Linda from Minnesota   August 7th, 2009 2:08 pm ET

Its her business, his business, no one else's. Period.

Len in Washington   August 7th, 2009 2:02 pm ET

And the Republican Leadership ("High Moral" characters that they are) still stand by this creep.
"Forgive" him?
Run him out of town on a rail!

kathie ann   August 7th, 2009 1:56 pm ET

how can she do that....come back and act as First Lady?????

She trusted him-he lied, trust broken never to return- ask some one who has been there done that

Jon   August 7th, 2009 1:56 pm ET

Duh. What took you so long?

Bill Haynes   August 7th, 2009 1:55 pm ET

I'm surprised he's not governing from Argentina between his lover's "tan lines."

Zero.   August 7th, 2009 1:53 pm ET

Good for you lady. Not before time!

I'll make em famous   August 7th, 2009 1:53 pm ET

So what !? Former Prez Clinton had his ways and his wife went thru a lot, and now look,...., nuff said

Gary   August 7th, 2009 1:45 pm ET

I'm glad that Jenny Sanford is standing up for herself and her children! The republicans should get back to basics and take that so-alled governor to the vet and have him neutered! It would follow the conservative mantra of only costing about $45.00.....

Denna   August 7th, 2009 1:41 pm ET

Her pride finally kicked in. I can't believe it took her this long. Go Jenny and have a good life and let Mark go find his "soul mate". I guess you weren't it.

LAW   August 7th, 2009 1:38 pm ET

This is a LADY. the jerk she is married to doesn't deserve her. I feel so sorry for her, and for the children. Let's leave her alone, leave the kids alone, and that disgrace of a Governor needs to leave. Now.

Zach   August 7th, 2009 1:38 pm ET

Tatianna:

Why don't you read before you post... no one is criticizing this woman. We are supporting her and her decision. What we are criticizing is the Republican's "claim" to have superior "Christian" morals and family values when in reality they do not. They are just like everyone else in this world, greedy, arrogant and human. I do not fault them or criticize them for their flaws , I fault and criticize them for their hypocrisy. They are not morally superior to any other politicians, political parties or people. We are all human. Why can't anyone understand this???

Woman power   August 7th, 2009 1:35 pm ET

The more I read about this saga is the more I respect Mrs. Sanford. 1) She doesn’t take cr*p (unlike some other women). 2) She is most concerned about her four sons who undoubtedly would be the focus of unwanted attention from friends and schoolmates had they continued living in the same home and going to the same school. Kudos!

S Callahan   August 7th, 2009 1:28 pm ET

Stablity for her family is important and if this is the way to achieve it I wish all of them the best. Separation sometimes strengthens the heart..I pray for that for all of you.

van   August 7th, 2009 1:28 pm ET

I thought Republicans hated Europe. What was Sanford doing over there? America first, right GOP?

Jake   August 7th, 2009 1:27 pm ET

Hey, if you guys think that republicans are hypocrites, just look at the democrates! Need I remind you of...hmmm...I don't know, BILL CLINTON!! Oh yea, and JOHN EDWARDS!! Don't even try to put the blame of immorality on the republicans!

dolly   August 7th, 2009 1:25 pm ET

Well Mark, she could run for 2012 and bet ya!

The Real Issue   August 7th, 2009 1:23 pm ET

Come on Jenny. The Real Issue is that the Governor has not been truthful to you or your family. His heart is with the other woman. Now it appears that you are not being truthful to your citizenry in South Carolina. Tell the truth and indicate that it is not working with this man!

JonDie   August 7th, 2009 1:22 pm ET

This may be news in South Carolina but it isn't news in the rest of the country. CNN is more like the Maurie Povich show that a news source.

Va 4 Obama   August 7th, 2009 1:20 pm ET

She REALLY needs to dump her loser husband !! Does she want condone her husband's horrible behavior and have her boys grow up to think it's fine to cheat on your wife...she'll stay with you anyways????

Donna from Colorado Springs   August 7th, 2009 1:19 pm ET

This gives her and her boys a chance to get away from her lying, cheating husband and father, and hopefully, she will grow a backbone and not go back to him!

LoLo   August 7th, 2009 1:17 pm ET

@Tatianna,
I believe that both Michelle and Mrs. sanford stood by their Husbands sides. The difference is that Mark stepped out on his wife and it was made public. Mark just did not care about his family's feelings at all. To actually hold a needs conference claiming that he has found his soul mate is unbelievable. IF you see a double standard i do not see how. I bet that you would not put up with this from your husband? Here you are trying to make it a republican democrat thing. The real issue is that this man left the country without telling anyone. He should be fired. I do not care about what goes on in their personal life. I know I would have kicked him to the curb. Please get you story and lies straight.

sms29s   August 7th, 2009 1:16 pm ET

I have a feeling that Mark Sanford is going to pay dearly for his actions when his sons are grown. They are going to remember their mother as a lady and their father as the expletive who humiliated her in public. I don't think it bodes well for his future relationship with his children and grandchildren to be.

Pepou   August 7th, 2009 1:15 pm ET

Drop the bastard ! You will feel better.

LC   August 7th, 2009 1:14 pm ET

this is in response to ch's comment who refers to the Republican's having dysfunctional families. Well, there is a long list of Democratic ones too. this comes from being human and has nothing to do with what one's politcal party is. Look at Bill Clinton. How soon we forget.

Tp   August 7th, 2009 1:13 pm ET

I want to hear Republicans tell me again how gay marriage is a threat to the 'sanctity of marriage'

Island girl   August 7th, 2009 1:12 pm ET

When this man eventually demits office (willfully or otherwise) he should become a vociferous advocate for disease prevention, e.g. AIDS, STDs, etc. That would be a wonderul act of penance.

Charles   August 7th, 2009 1:09 pm ET

I just have to ask if the people of that state are so stupid as to not have the Gov :"leave the mansion". Why is this guy still there, more so in a "Bible and guns": state? Or perhaps morality and integrity are only "Sunday clothing for church" other wise the find it OK for their Emperor to be naked in what one calls "Foreign relations". Please tell me that Agentinea is NOT their "sister nation or state". that would just make it to kinky or almost to kinky for the R party.
Seems his wife is "good political wife". en a great lil wumens that dun suppurts her man" or she'd have walked. You can only guess at the humiliation levels these folks put up with to remain near the powers.

Shari, NY   August 7th, 2009 1:07 pm ET

Let's wish this lady well – she has four boys to raise. It must be very difficult to share the same living quarters with someone who confessed that he had found his "soul mate" with whom he had trysts for some eight years. Face it, whether or not he resigns, he is done.

yuri   August 7th, 2009 1:06 pm ET

OK, guys, this time she got the wind of the fact that Mark is datin' a Brazilian beauty whom he met in a Samba dance drama, while performin' a complicated maneuver.

GOP = 21st century dodo   August 7th, 2009 1:04 pm ET

GOOD FOR YOU, JENNY! That man's slime and you deserve better. Let him go frolic with his "soulmate". Let's see how long that lasts.

shiba   August 7th, 2009 1:04 pm ET

GOOD FOR JENNY. Maria, the homewrecker in chief has destroyed 2 familes in a row... she had an affair with Daniel Haddad (the Ted Turner of Argentina) who was also married with 4 kids, and now this. Congratulations.

Just a private affair....CNN   August 7th, 2009 1:03 pm ET

Where are all the grades for the 10 questions..CNN...? What you do
show your are fudging...Hopeless cnn you are part of it...!!!!!!!!!!

arithmetic is liberal   August 7th, 2009 1:00 pm ET

I don't agree with her politically in any sense of the word, but my heart goes out to this poor woman who has only tried to be a good supporting wife and mother and who has suffered the indignity of betrayal in the public eye as a result.

Once Upon a Horse   August 7th, 2009 12:58 pm ET

she's just doing this as a diversion to take away the attention on the GOP healthcare mobs since they've been outted as fakers.

Matt   August 7th, 2009 12:57 pm ET

Its amazing how hypocritical Republicans are....

Rosa Birmingham, AL   August 7th, 2009 12:55 pm ET

Good for her. Now if they could only get her husband out too.

ch   August 7th, 2009 12:54 pm ET

Another in a LONG line of dysfunctional republican families (i.e. Reagan and his whack job offspring, the drunken Bush twins, Giuliani’s kids who refuse to have anything to do with him, Palin’s knocked up teenage daughter, etc)

They preach “family values” but these GOP hypocrites can’t abide by them!

Melissa   August 7th, 2009 12:51 pm ET

Good she's showing some guts. Now lets hope it continues. He should be fired.

Alpha and Omega - The Great Physician Against Republicans   August 7th, 2009 12:48 pm ET

Christians always point to Republicans as those who always have high standards and morals and always take the high road. This is not true at all. The Republicans have a secret sinners club house in D.C. where, if the truth were known, Americans would be stunned at all the crap these liars get involved in.

GI Joe   August 7th, 2009 12:46 pm ET

A House Divided ................................

dominican mama 4 Obama   August 7th, 2009 12:45 pm ET

Okay....he resigned right?....so she's got to move out. How is this news?? This lady is wealthy (thank God). She really doesn't have to put up with his or anybody else's crap!

OldUncleTom   August 7th, 2009 12:43 pm ET

I hope that Jenny has good prenups. I'm already sure the house in Charleston is hers.

Now, all that remains is evicting the trash from the governor's mansion, and maybe SC can give a stab at being part of America again.

Letty, NM   August 7th, 2009 12:42 pm ET

She should just stay there, why bother with the pretense?

Arden Muller   August 7th, 2009 12:42 pm ET

My prayers are with Jenny and her sons. What she is doing is the right thing and I really have a lot of respect for Jenny Sanford for doing this. I believe that she will accomplish great things without her husband. We wish you all the best.

benny   August 7th, 2009 12:42 pm ET

Good for you, Nancy!! Stick to your guns, speak your OWN truth, take your children with you, AND GET RID OF YOUR HUSBAND!! HE IS A BUM!!!

Lynda/Minnesota   August 7th, 2009 12:42 pm ET

I guess sharing "family values" with another woman got to be too much for her. Can't blame her for leaving at all. Hopfully she can get her life back together again.

Sandford, you really should resign. I can't image all this reality TV is good for your state or your children.

CA Don   August 7th, 2009 12:41 pm ET

If Governor Sanford does not resign he should be impeached. But the Republicans have a double standard and will not do so. This is so much more serious than the offense committed by President Clinton that it is laughable. This just underscores the fact that impeachment is not really a legal process, but a political one, and it should be judged as such.

Bridgette   August 7th, 2009 12:41 pm ET

Well when you are on the television talking about you found your soul mate and constantly begging your wife to go and see her what do you expect. There is something wrong with all of these Republicans you can't keep trying to live like you are a perfect being because no human being is.

Jim in San Jose 2   August 7th, 2009 12:40 pm ET

Classic... First her husband bails on his job, now she's leaving the Governor's Mansion. While I don't blame her for wanting to leave the guy, she should just leave him and be done. He's not teaching the kids anything close to responsibility, and she's just wanting the best of both worlds...

Sniffit   August 7th, 2009 12:39 pm ET

Leave it CNN. Be the bigger person. I know some people out there will salivate over this, but it's really just someone's personal life falling apart off which you're trying to make money.

Peoples Voice   August 7th, 2009 12:38 pm ET

Now all that needs to be done is to get Mark to move out.

Tatianna   August 7th, 2009 12:38 pm ET

During presidential campaign, Michelle was stomping for her hubby. Her statements on campaign trail were representing Obama. People criticized her. Obama suggested that spouses be off limits, calling them civilians and saying, they didnt sign up for this. So why are dems attacking Jenny (a civilian spouse?) Perhaps dems hold Michelle to a higher standard than other spouses.

Steph   August 7th, 2009 12:36 pm ET

Good for her!

Obama 2.0   August 7th, 2009 12:34 pm ET

You should stay, it's your husband who should go!

family value party my a_ _!   August 7th, 2009 12:27 pm ET

He should resign. I have no respect for these so called family values Republican's. One of the few men I have witnessed that actually demonstrates family values is President Obama – period!

madison   August 7th, 2009 12:27 pm ET

Guess Mark's efforts to fall back in love with his wife aren't going so well. Maybe he'll be heading back to Argentina soon????

quarterback   August 7th, 2009 12:25 pm ET

Dump that idiot. Take him for all he is worth.

Carol from Pennsylvania   August 7th, 2009 12:24 pm ET

Mrs. Sanford appears to be far more articulate, and a whole lot smarter, than her husband the governor. Maybe South Carolina voted for the wrong Sanford.

Peter V   August 7th, 2009 12:22 pm ET

Okay Mark, stick a fork in your marriage, it's done. Now go move to Argentina and be happy, for Pete's sake.

Kyle   August 7th, 2009 12:20 pm ET

Another plastic response. How about this, " My husband met a woman he had a deep connection with therefore our love is dead and I am moving out. We have been married for many years and lost our connection and now our relationship is over." Are we monkeys or people? I think the politicians thing we are monkeys. When will we start reaching deep inside and articulating our feelings with passion and truth? How do you think wars start? This stuff is not static and impersonal; it is ultra personal. I am tired of this plastic world that is run as if by robots. We are human beings. The change we need must go even deeper than we thought.

Dutch/Bad Newz, VA   August 7th, 2009 12:20 pm ET

With all of this drama, this should be a reality tv show.

jfs Memhis, Tn   August 7th, 2009 12:19 pm ET

So should her husband if he has any token of decency left. Maybe CNN should conduct another poll........you know the ones where only Republicans are called and the Republicans bury the on line polls. Then the next day the report results that are not correct...........like where the TV reported a D for Reublican performance and then TODAY within these articles they report a C-. I think that between Lou Dobbs and Fox the original NEWS???? source is suffering. wonder how much CNN stock is owned by Insurance Co. ?????

Liberty Queen   August 7th, 2009 12:17 pm ET

Well ,Jenny, it's about time you dumped this creep and thief! Putting you at risk for life-threatening STD's...Mark Sanford should be in prison.

Jane/Seattle   August 7th, 2009 12:17 pm ET

I would find it very hard to ever trust the guy again. Despite saying that they are working on their marriage, could this be a first step to leaving him? I speculate as this is really not our business.

Alicia   August 7th, 2009 12:16 pm ET

How nice that these children are getting prime education.

I wondered how anyone could continue to be with someone who publicly continues to state his love for another woman. I feel bad for her trying to keep her family together. She tried.

I do not feel this thing that men in the MSM say "Well, he is in love'. That is bull! He took a vow and had been flirting with other women, until he found a taker. He betrayed his family.

Jean   August 7th, 2009 12:12 pm ET

Get rid of him. You have so much and he has so little.
