WASHINGTON (CNN) – South Carolina First Lady Jenny Sanford and her four boys are moving out of the governor's mansion in Columbia and back to their home in Charleston for the upcoming school year.
The wife of South Carolina governor Mark Sanford announced the news in a statement e-mailed to reporters on Friday, days after the family returned from a two-week vacation to an undisclosed location in Europe.
"While we will be leaving Columbia, we will return often, and I will remain engaged in activities in my role as First Lady, acknowledging that my responsibilities to my family come first," she said.
Mark and Jenny Sanford's four boys have attended Heathwood Hall Episcopal School in Columbia, but they will presumably enroll in a new school in the Charleston area.
Updated with Mark Sanford's statement after the jump
The Sanfords have lived together in the governor's mansion on Arsenal Hill since 2003, when Mark was sworn in as governor, but the family has also spent a good deal of time in their private Charleston residence.
The couple have been working to repair their marriage after Sanford admitted to an extramarital affair with an Argentine woman in June. He has rebuffed calls for his resignation and says he plans to serve out the remainder of his second term.
In her statement, Sanford said she was thankful for "the overwhelming support and prayers we have received from people all across South Carolina."
"I am literally in awe of how blessed we are to have such love and support from family and friends, old and new," she said.
UPDATE: Mark Sanford's office issued the following statement on Jenny's move:
"The First Lady's Office has already put out a statement that speaks for the family, on this decision that we felt best, both for our process of reconciliation, and for the boys in the upcoming school year," Sanford said. "I stand by this family decision and accordingly ask the media to honor the zone of privacy that Jenny has asked for on behalf of the healing process and our four boys going forward."
UPDATE: Gov. Mark Sanford issued a statement on the decision Friday afternoon asking for privacy for his family.
"The First Lady's Office has already put out a statement that speaks for the family, on this decision that we felt best, both for our process of reconciliation, and for the boys in the upcoming school year," he said.
"I stand by this family decision and accordingly ask the media to honor the zone of privacy that Jenny has asked for on behalf of the healing process and our four boys going forward."
I want to know what Rush and FOX want to say
They won’t speak about this topic
Whoopty Doo!!! Now the Governor has the "Rule of the Roost" – and can really party down with his "Soul Mate" from Venezuela any time he wants!
wow....and we're supposed to learn family values from this guy?!?!?.....if the neo-clowns would seriously look at what is eroding the family unit, it is not single moms, gays, or pregnant teens....it's rotting from the inside due to hypocritical jerks like this guy......do as i say, not as i do.....his marriage AND his career in politics are over......
What took her so long?
And screw her "activities" as first lady.
Pack up, get out and, "GET EVERYTHING"
About time, here in good ole Stuart, fl. we were wondering how long was she going to put up with that circus character (Clown).
Maybe if I see her in Benihana's one Friday night in Sewall's maybe i'll try to graciously ask her if .... The C street cult led to some of her pain.
Nothing in this life is coincidental because everything is an ILLUSION. Pls. forgive him because in your next life you will be stuck with him in order to forgive him. I cannot tell you how hard it is. May God give you the grace to let go.
My question is why did she wait so long? Trying to hold a family and marriage is admirable but when the guy goes and visits his "soul mate" instead of you, it is over.
Just another Republican without any morals or family values;)
She is so ignorant. Her husband prefer a hot Latina better than her. She look so boring.
It may seem exciting to some people to have affairs outside of marriage.
But a good wife or husband is hard to find.
I don't know what goes on behind their closed doors, but outwardly she seems like a very good woman.
He should appreciate what he has.
Jenny ..... Maria Belen Thanks you all the way from Argentina ..
Jenny .... Mark Thanks you all the way from N.C on his way to Argentina
Jenny .... no one else can think why the hell you decided to become a victem other then because you are a weak woman.
She probably just does not want to share gov's mansion with his "soul mate".
Jenny knew her marriage was on the rocks at least 8 years ago. So, she thought she would divert Mark's attention and keep him busy as South Carolina's governor. Shame on her! She inflicted her do nothing husband on South Carolinians. Since you really can't teach an old dog new tricks, he was also a do nothing governor. They should have sought counseling from a bonefied Christian pastor 8 years ago. Instead of playing these tick for tack games with other peoples' lives.
Republican princples ,do as i say not as I do. I was a republican untill I got an education.
CNN want/wait for confirmation to "Free-Speach, then when they get it,
They themselves speak out of turn. People are frightened since you CNN, helped to elect Barack Obama.... They have a right to Speak Out
You do all the time... You have the help of the Airwaves to do this..
Ms. Sanford take of your self and your boys. Let the Governor go where his soul mate is. He is not worth any decent lady waiting their time. God Bless You.
"While we will be............I will remain engaged in activities in my role as First Lady....................my responsibilities to my family come first," she said.................
1. She is a Nice Lady, who relied upon a Wrong Man. So she has to Face it.
2. She just needs to Forget about her Role as First Lady
3. She need to just Focus on responsibilities to her Family .
4. New First Lady of the Democratic Party will do the Role of First Lady hereafter. 8)
You go, girl! It is so sad to see the humiliated wife stand by her worthless spouse, showing a brave face. Time to move on with your head held high.
Good for her to leave that puck a$$. I am man and married I am on her side. What man in this world, would call another woman his "soulmate". He acted like he just got his first piece. He is disgraced to the state of South Carolina.
Good for her. Now why aren't we talking about the Blackwater murders?
It is a sorry spectacle anyway you look at it especially the treeyoung gentlemen cought up in ths mess. The only thing thT galls me is that this guy was loud and obnoxious in his denunciation of Pres. Clinton and the fact that since the Regean administration we've been slapped in the with Republican pontificating about "family values" – we now know what they really meant by that open ended slogan and it is disgusting, sad, remorseful and enoughto make a saint blaspheme.
I could care less what Mrs. Sanford does or where she lives.
As for the "Governor," he needs to follow his own admonishment about Bill Clinton. And it's true, Bill's actions don't hold a candle to Sanford's.
your posts make no sense
what country are you writing from?
Jenny you can come stay at my house, wait a minute my wife says you can't come over.
Now that the family will be safe, the people can serve her husband an eviction notice.
