WASHINGTON (CNN) – South Carolina First Lady Jenny Sanford and her four boys are moving out of the governor's mansion in Columbia and back to their home in Charleston for the upcoming school year.

The wife of South Carolina governor Mark Sanford announced the news in a statement e-mailed to reporters on Friday, days after the family returned from a two-week vacation to an undisclosed location in Europe.

"While we will be leaving Columbia, we will return often, and I will remain engaged in activities in my role as First Lady, acknowledging that my responsibilities to my family come first," she said.

Mark and Jenny Sanford's four boys have attended Heathwood Hall Episcopal School in Columbia, but they will presumably enroll in a new school in the Charleston area.

Updated with Mark Sanford's statement after the jump

The Sanfords have lived together in the governor's mansion on Arsenal Hill since 2003, when Mark was sworn in as governor, but the family has also spent a good deal of time in their private Charleston residence.

The couple have been working to repair their marriage after Sanford admitted to an extramarital affair with an Argentine woman in June. He has rebuffed calls for his resignation and says he plans to serve out the remainder of his second term.

In her statement, Sanford said she was thankful for "the overwhelming support and prayers we have received from people all across South Carolina."

"I am literally in awe of how blessed we are to have such love and support from family and friends, old and new," she said.

UPDATE: Mark Sanford's office issued the following statement on Jenny's move:

"The First Lady's Office has already put out a statement that speaks for the family, on this decision that we felt best, both for our process of reconciliation, and for the boys in the upcoming school year," Sanford said. "I stand by this family decision and accordingly ask the media to honor the zone of privacy that Jenny has asked for on behalf of the healing process and our four boys going forward."

UPDATE: Gov. Mark Sanford issued a statement on the decision Friday afternoon asking for privacy for his family.

"The First Lady's Office has already put out a statement that speaks for the family, on this decision that we felt best, both for our process of reconciliation, and for the boys in the upcoming school year," he said.

"I stand by this family decision and accordingly ask the media to honor the zone of privacy that Jenny has asked for on behalf of the healing process and our four boys going forward."

"Zone of Privacy." That sounds like an "activist" judge trying to justify a woman's right to choose.

Hey Chicago4Obama, I understand your frustration with the South, but remember we here in North Carolina carried our state for Obama proudly, and elected a new Dem Senator and Governor. We've got UNC and Duke as well, so don't write off the whole South.

    @Anna,

Did you know that i isn't a word unless capitalized? Perhaps you should spend less time trolling the CNN ticker forums and more time watching Big Bird describe the letter of the week.

I is for idiot and Anna, you get an A in that respect.

    Cheers,
    Beth

I wonder if that hick Spivey was as forgiving when Clinton needed sex. Sandford who previously spouted Christian values now has no credibility because he disregarded his marriage vows and lying to everyone including his family and staff, about his whereabouts while charging the taxpayers for his trips.

Hey, "chicago4obama", there are plenty of Obama fans here in the South; plenty of progressive Democrats, and even some sane Republicans – well, I take that last one back; all Republicans are insane. Don't write off the entire South because of a few loose nuts and Nazi Republicans.

Spivey – a degree doesn't prove an education. No self-respecting or value understanding Christian woman would want to be with a liar and a cheat – both are in the ten commandments as is coveting what is your neighbors – including a spouse, since Jenny is still married in God's eyes if not in Mark's. If all Spivey is interested in is his looks – then she might find herself in that lake of fire...

Dems voted for a Savior, I voted for a president. Proof that Barack is the Obamessiah – Obamas flock has millions of sheep!

Uh.....G.W Bush ran for President because "God wanted him to".
I voted for Obama and trust me..... Obama is the President not the messiah..........and I am no sheep.

To Anna and others representing the racist right-winged lunatic fringe –

There is neither a God nor a Heaven that would allow a sub-human like you entrance. Good thing it's stinking hot in Ole Miss, you'll just love the climate where you're going. Crazy cooter.

And Anna claims to be well educated as well as religious, but seems unable to understand Matthew 25:40. I'm thinking she's going to have to make some big changes if she thinks heaven is in her future.

She does deserve to be Mark Sanford's next fling, and she wants him too! What does that say about taste?

Jenny Sanford has too much brains, class, and dignity for Anna to begin to comprehend. We should all pray for Anna.....maybe one day she'll get it.

  18. Jenny why did you quit as First Lady?

Repugliklan legislators have not forced Sanford's resignation because they want him to finish his term as governor. Repugs impeached Clinton but want Sanford, Vitter and Ensign to stay in office. Pathetic.

Maybe everyone should move on, including CNN. It's like CNN is beating a dead horse. As a suggestion perhaps CNN will have better luck resurrecting good ole Fred Sanford and Lamont.

I can't imagine ANYONE comparing Jenny Sanford to Sarah Palin. There is no comparison. When one opens her mouth, grace and intelligence comes out. I'll let you figure out who that is.
I hope the best for Mrs. Sanford and her boys.

Women stand by their cheating men, and men stand by their cheating women (it DOES work both ways, you know), for a number of reasons which are not mutually exclusive: 1) they still love their partner and feel that the years they have already devoted to the relationship are worth fighting for; 2) they feel that divorce is against their religious beliefs; 3) they prefer being separated while retaining the benefits of still being legally married; and 4) they somehow feel that it is better for the children. There are other, less desirable reasons such as money, pre-nups, and loss of prestige, but I think we can count Jenny out on these scores - she comes from a wealthy and prestigious family and has plenty of outside interests.

Sanford is a hypocrite and there is no denying that. However, I have my own sins - why would I cast stones at him? It is up to the people of SC to determine his fate, not me because he is not MY governor. I have enough to worry about with my own!
