From

WASHINGTON (CNN) - Former Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean told CNN Sunday that former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin had deliberately made up charges that the Obama administration’s health care bill would lead to euthanasia.

“About euthanasia, they're just totally erroneous. She just made that up,” he said. “Just like the ‘Bridge to Nowhere’ that she supposedly didn't support.

“There's nothing like euthanasia in the bill. I practiced medicine for a long time, and of course you have to have end of life discussions - the patients want that. There's nothing... euthanasia's not in this bill.”

Dean was referring comments Palin made late Friday in a post on her Facebook page. In her post, the former Republican vice presidential candidate said President Obama’s health care plan would create a “death panel” that would weigh whether her parents or son Trig were “worthy of health care.”

She discounted the administration’s view that the president’s plan would cut health care costs, saying the only path to lower costs was less treatment.

"And who will suffer the most when they ration care?" she wrote. "The sick, the elderly, and the disabled, of course. The America I know and love is not one in which my parents or my baby with Down Syndrome will have to stand in front of Obama’s 'death panel' so his bureaucrats can decide, based on a subjective judgment of their 'level of productivity in society,' whether they are worthy of health care. Such a system is downright evil."

Palin has mostly steered clear of interviews with reporters since leaving office last month. "Democracy depends on you. That is why our troops are willing to die for you," she told the media in her farewell speech. "So how about in honor of the American soldier, ya quit making things up?" She spent several days last week in New York, meeting with her book publisher.

Euthanasia: Euthanasia is the intentional killing by act or omission of a dependent human being for his or her alleged benefit.
This goes on every day under the current medical programs and will continue. If there is a expermental drug or treatment that has high cost and low rates of success it is deamed not worth the $$. Unless of course you are lets say a president or movie star then they will stop at nothing to keep your butt alive. Sorry little people of the world die when it is not cost effective and you are close to the end.

Sinequanon4U   August 9th, 2009 12:05 pm ET

We need to put the parental controls on Palin supporters with internet access because they are a true threat to national security.

How? They are showing the rest of the world just how dumb we are!!!

Anyone who supports Palin is just plain DUMB! These are the people who want to know where the stamp goes on their email.

Let us take full advantage of her "quitter status" and bathe in our good fortune by never uttering her name again. This will remove her from the mouths of uneducated, redneck, Rush fans and off the computer screens of those seeking knowledge and valuable information.

Meka   August 9th, 2009 12:05 pm ET

Has anybody read the bill yet? How do they know so much?

Steve in Kentucky   August 9th, 2009 12:03 pm ET

CNN shouldn't have had to wait for Howard Dean to call Palin out on this flat-out lie. It's just a FACT that a "death panel" isn't in the bill so instead of running the spoon-fed story yesterday from Palin, CNN should have asked why Palin was deliberately trying to mislead the public.

Even though Palin is stupid, she's not that stupid. So that can't be the reason she's "confused" about the provisions of the health care bill.

It's time for CNN to step up and start seeking the TRUTH on the health care issue instead of this "he said, she said" ping pong approach. At this point, CNN is either part of the problem or part of the solution. What's it going to be?

Charlotte, NC   August 9th, 2009 12:03 pm ET

Is it the messenger that you can't stomach or the truth in her message? The fact remains, whether you like her or not, whether you are a liberal or a conservative ... whatever your point of reference or orientation ... that Obama's "plan" ... if any of you with an opinion would take the time to read it and think it through ... would certainly have a review board (call it what you want ... just try to read slow and grasp the concept) which would determine who qualifies for care and who does not. Let's now take it a step further so all of the knee-jerk reactionaries can understand. If you are not deemed worthy of care, then you don't get the treatment that would prolong your life. Pretty simple, huh? If you can't (won't) make the connection between actively terminating a person (euthanasia) and letting them wither and die (Obama Health Care Plan), it is a shame that your intentional ignorance will eventually catch up with you.

Is your life at risk today or in the future because you have ...
AIDS? Bye bye.
Lung Cancer from smoking? Bye bye.
Heart disease from obesity? Bye bye.
Liver failing because you drank too much? Bye bye.

Read the proposed Bill and work through the mechanics ... then tell me that Dean isn't the liar. Tell me that Obama isn't answering these very direct questions for a reason other than that they have VERY unpopular answers tied to them.

We can all get on our self-rightous soap box and make a case for the "self-inflicted" medical conditions. Well, you can ... I don't get it. I don't think people with AIDS, cancer, heart disease, organ failures, etc. should be judged unworthy of medical care.

Still not buying any of this, or letting your moral high horse get in the way?

What about the premature birth? Medical magic saves how many today? How many will receive the EXTREMELY EXPENSIVE treatment under Obama's Medical Plan?

I don't think I need to go on and on and on to question different scenarios because they all seem to come back to the same point. A review board/function will be deciding whether you qualify for treatment.

Please ... all of you supporters of Obama's Plan ... answer the question. Be honest. Stop lying.

New Age Democrat   August 9th, 2009 12:03 pm ET

Was that Howard Dean saying to not make things up? Well, I guess he should know... The guy is one of the reasons why the party has the problems getting in touch with the average citizen. The "Far Left Wacko" label that the Repubs give him is unfortunately well deserved. How he got elected to the DNC is beyond me, but I'll bet money did.

Carol from Wisconsin   August 9th, 2009 12:02 pm ET

We are already deciding who shall live with not providing health care to everyone: those who are poor, laid off from jobs, disabled children whose parents don't have health insurance because they need to stay home to care for them, those with cancer who had to leave jobs and cannot get health insurance because of a pre-existing condition. We need to stop deciding "who shall live" through our outdated health system. I am a 70 year old cancer patient getting good care, but I know there are others who could not afford the medicine that keeps me alive. I want those to have what I have.

catmom   August 9th, 2009 12:01 pm ET

Now we know why Sarah Palin quit. She wants to be able to make up lies and scare Americans without accepting responsibility for what she does. Republicans seem to be pulling out all stops. They are lying about everything in regards to health care reform. They are taking everything they know that gets people riled up and saying that is what President Obama and the Democrats want. Their intentions are to see health care reform fail because they think the American people will blame President Obama and then see him as a failure. Unfortunately they have been blinded by the right and don't realize or care that if President Obama fails then our country fails

Republicans seem to think it is just fine for angry people to go to Democratic town hall meetings to disrupt them and prevent American citizens from hearing what their representatives have to say, I wonder why these angry mobs aren't going to disrupt Republican meetings to find out exactly what they are doing for the American citizens. What are the Republican plans? Or are Republicans not having town hall meetings because they have nothing to tell their constituents. Oh right, they have no plans other than to not work with our President and to be against everything he does or wants.

I hear people complaining that President Obama hasn't come out with a plan and Democrats can't explain what their plan is. I would like to know what the Republican plan is besides tax cuts and tort reform. Is that it?

Joyce   August 9th, 2009 12:01 pm ET

This is a dangerous woman! Not only is she dumb she also fabricates stories to promote herself (Bridge to Nowhere, Euthanasia). It appears the only interest she has is herself! I would hope the media would realize this and give her less coverage.

Stephanie   August 9th, 2009 12:00 pm ET

When must media outlets like CNN have to take responsibility for the accuracy of the ads they run and the spokespeople they have on.

The "60plus" ad running this morning on CNN was full of outright lies and yet CNN puts revenue before honesty and thus belies the slogan "the most trusted" name in news.

CNN also gives credance Rick Scott whose company was found guilty of defrauding the Medicare of 1.7 BILLION dollars. Surely that fact MUST be presented when he appears on to push for the insurance companies.

To pretend that Palin's comments are credible in this phoney giving "voice" to each side in disingenuous, To also give voice to a person who REFUSES to be interviewed is also a real problem in credibilty..

It is the MEDIA who are giving confusion to the health care debate by not focussing on the contents of the bill instead of worrying about how it is effecting the president.

RJ   August 9th, 2009 11:59 am ET

The last thing Mr. Dean said of any importance was "BYYYYAAAHHHH".

Nothing like one partisan hack attacking another.

Richard L   August 9th, 2009 11:59 am ET

So why is Palin making things up news?

anti liberal   August 9th, 2009 11:58 am ET

dennis cookinham,

THANK YOU for the sense you bring to the conversation.

a small 8% cost will absolutely incentivize employers (especially ones in a struggling economy) to drop their employees onto the public option. the fact that the CBO doesn't realize this is honestly kind of scary.

Its a hop skip and a jump to full single payer.

Enjoy Canadian style care people.

I'm saving my money now to pay for the ACTUAL care i need.

I'd rather not like being in a hospital ward with 10-15 people in a large room.

I kind of like the semi-private rooms in hospitals today.

Chenna Benna   August 9th, 2009 11:58 am ET

Howard Dean: "she made that up." = She is a nut.

Valid Point   August 9th, 2009 11:58 am ET

Palin quit her job because she realized she can make a big buck with spreading lies and hate like Rush, Ann, and Glen do. The bigger the lie the bigger the ratings and the more the money. She is off to a good start. She will probably have her own show on Fox in no time.
She is Evil!!

Michele   August 9th, 2009 11:57 am ET

CNN.....I know you only point out the liberal views on everything....but read the bill....a government panel to decide what health care is needed. A lot of us educated on the former bill are concerned about euthanasia, quality, elderly and those that are genuinely sick!

Dee Dee Lynn   August 9th, 2009 11:57 am ET

Antiliberal,

You must be (like my brother-in-law) one of those health care industry insiders who is always crying poverty and saying how health care reform will make you even "poorer."

My brother-in-law, the doctor, feels he's poor because he can't afford a multi-million dollar house, only two half million dollar ones, poor baby.

He constantly complains about how medicare doesn't pay him enough to even break even, and yet nearly all of his patients are on medicare. So who's paying for those houses? And all those vacations?

I know someone who is an executive in the health care industry. His annual bonus is greater than the annual salary of most people in the country.

These people cry poverty to cover the fact that they raise prices and fees to line their own pockets. They constantly whine about how they don't make any money BUT they also say that reform is dangerous and unnecessary.

Anyone who believes them is an idiot or is one of them.

And as to birth certificates (which have nothing to do with the question at hand), I want every single person who brings that up to have to go before a panel of experts and the public and prove that they are a natural born US citizen. I want them to agree to have their paternity verfied, their maternity verfied, the citizenship of their parents verified. I want them to agree to have their citizenship challenged in court 20 or 30 times and to agree to surrender all their rights as a citizen until such time as they can prove to the satisfaction of 100% of the population of this country (even the crackpots) that they are a legal, natural born citizen of this country (God help you if you are the child of someone in the armed services who happened to be born abroad or have a foreign mother or father). If any of these people don't agree to be subject to this themselves, they are hypocrites and (and probably worse) and should just shut up.

Aunt Bea and Opie   August 9th, 2009 11:56 am ET

To those who think this bill will ration healhcare, guess what? The healthcare companies ration it now as they can drop you at any time for ANY reason. And if you have a preexisting condition and change jobs a lot of healthcare companies will not cover it. Now what do you call that?

Oh and Palin and a lot of the right are practicing an old technique called "A lie told often enough becomes truth". Say it over and over again often enough and I bet even The Great Rush will believe it. Their use of this would make the person who first said it proud. His name was Vladimir Lenin.

Speaking of birth certificates, I bet that Palin cannot produce hers. After all she would have to click her heels and fly back to The Land of Oz to get it.

William   August 9th, 2009 11:55 am ET

" Sad American" Are you kidding? "Illegal immigrants are covered under the new bill because it will actually save us money. As it is now, they enter the ER for their care and it ends up costing us loads more than it needs to cost."
Please explain how having illegals in this country and covered by this new heath plan is going to save us money??? Hello!!!! It's going to cost even more!!!! Once word gets out that anyone coming to this country, regardless of citizenship will get Free health care, our boarders will be completely over run! Please explain how if an illegal goes to an emergency room for treatment, that by going to an assigned health care provider it will save money???
The only way to actually save money is to DEPORT all the illegals. Twenty million people not taxing our health care system, our welfare system, our schools and our jails WOULD SAVE MONEY!

Eisener   August 9th, 2009 11:55 am ET

"Palin-who?" is a complete looser individual with an intellect that is embarrassment to the school system in this country. Her statements along with those of other completely (purposely) delusional public figures, such as Limbaugh – who make their persona ($$$) on outrageous statements and stands – are simply so far out it leaves me speechless and terrified. In that sense I agree whole-heatedly with Dean.

For example, the completely crazy (yes, crazy) likening of ANY US politician that currently are seated in our Congress / Senate or Presidential administration to those of the Nazi regime in Germany in the 1930's – 40's. That is nuts.

Seriously, they need to stop it – and maybe as they cool down actually sit down to read Hitler's 'manifest' "Mein Kampf" and a few history books, maybe include one on socialism, so they actually gain some grasp on what they are spewing about.. Its sickening – and oh so wrong and far off the facts. It is dangerous.

I truly hope.. pray.. that people of this country are better educated than they are – that they see through the evil rhetoric (I strongly advocate against calling anyone or anything evil – but evil rhetoric).

GuyInVA   August 9th, 2009 11:55 am ET

As I read the headline, I think of all the people on this site who routinely ask CNN to stop printing stories about Sarah Palin, and ask why CNN writes about her. They continue to write about her because she remains relevant, and a factor in conservative circles, like it or not. So using the anti-Palin logic, has anyone asked CNN why they wrote a story on Dr. Dean? He's no longer a factor, even to the extreme leftists who now dominate the democratic party, and he is utterly irrelevant to this debate. Maybe owner and CEO of the democratic party, George Soros, can find a job for him.

Jerry in Iowa   August 9th, 2009 11:55 am ET

Dennis Cookinham   August 9th, 2009 11:52 am ET

What Dean also said is that a public option will not result in a single payer system. Also that "anyone who likes their present insurance can keep it". The propose new plan states that an employer would have to pay an 8% penalty if they don't provide healthcare. Does anyone disagree that the current cost of healthcare is much more than 8% of a person's salary? What will prevent all the employers from sending their folks to the "public plan"... additionally, who do you think makes more money/benefits, a clerk working at Blue Cross or a SEIU employee working for the government??
Please address the 8% option which will force a single payer system.

Sunny Soleil   August 9th, 2009 11:52 am ET

Ms. Palin – is almost always misinformed and ALWAYS inappropriate. Certainly she must have known prior to writing down that claim that it was extreme and bizarre in nature? This latest claim on her part poses a remarkable threat to her credibility or her being taken seriously in discourse. It is time she realizes that there is a difference between sensationalism and substance.

Sad American   August 9th, 2009 11:52 am ET

Why have poor Trig be subjected to the government's proposed "death panels" when PRIVATE health care companies already do this so well!?

Oh Sarah, you're so smart. Oh, wait, you're actually single-handedly making this country dumber every time we have to read about anything you ever say...ever. Literally every word that emanates from your torpid brain makes this country dumber for having heard it.

You sadden Jesus. Jesus would DEFINITELY be for defending private health care companies and continuing to leave 40 million+ americans without health care. Especially in the richest country in the world. Jesus definitely NEVER talked about helping the sick, the tired, the poor. In my bible, I have him always defecating directly on top of homeless people's heads.

For dumb right-wing nut jobs seemingly unable to pick up on thick sarcasm...that was a sarcastic comment. Jesus is currently ashamed to be associated with Sarah Palin. He doesn't like to "pal around" with heartless wenches.

lj   August 9th, 2009 11:52 am ET

Ms. Palin needs to be asked who provides her family's health insurance since the ex-First Dude is a native. Could be the State of Alaska.

Nick   August 9th, 2009 11:51 am ET

There really isn't anything in the bill about a "death panel". Palin is just scaremongering as usual. What is in the bill is money for families to visit an adviser who will tell them about different health care options, for example hospice and other end of life services. Hospice care, not death panels and euthanasia.

By the way, I saw someone called Palin "Dick Cheney in a dress" in an earlier comment. That image is somehow both hilarious and terrifying at the same time.

One last thing. Those of you who claim CNN is not allowing republicans to post; how were you able to post? Also, perhaps CNN isn't censoring you, maybe more people just think Palin is a bozo than not. I'm not saying anything bad about her family, her religion, or her baby; I just think she is an idiot. And CNN isn't left wing. They have Lou Dobbs, and had Glenn Beck until he left for Fox.

Real-Repub   August 9th, 2009 11:51 am ET

Two irrelevant failed politico's throwing crap at each other. Typical of politics in American today. How sad that CNN would even bother to give these two a forum.
Dr. Dean stands to gain a tremendous windfall if the Government starts to pay for medical care. No more checks and balances. Even tho the INsurance companies are greedy profit mongers, at least they keep Some of the bit time health care corporate giants in check.
Palin is irrelevant and o so wrong but then again Dean is also irrelevant and o so wrong.
We do NOT need a government run beaurocracy to further screw up the "health care system" (What is that by the way ?

I am truly disappointed in Ms. Palin. She has shown herself to be a follower, liar, and a promoter of racism. She's the operator of the bandwagon called stupidity. Unbelievable that an individual who wants to become President of our United States could be so divisive and loony at the same time. Please Ms. Palin put the shut to the up!. You are too ignorant to lead an ant!

I am sick of all to lies and promotion of racism. To RUSH, PALIN, BECK, HANNITY, LOU DOBBS, BOHEMER, O'RIELLY, AND STEELE ( Michael you are just a token as well as Jindal when will you two get it!) , All of you are advocating violence and the spreading of lies just to regain power. America, Read people, read for yourselves. Make your own decisions. Stop letting others lead you around like animals and do your thinking for you. I sure you have an IQ above 2!

Our President is doing all he can to bring about the change he promised during his campaign. We must support him with our intelligence and logic and ideals. That's what we promised him when we elected him! Its not about black or white! Its about helping Americans get the health care they need and putting America back on track..

While there may be a minority of people who go for the race card... I assure you the majority are not calling or playing that. We are allowed to voice our concerns against his ideas, plans, or direction if we don't agree. This IS America, the land of the free...everyone can voice their opinion..looked you were able to ramble on here and no one stopped your nonsense.

Thing is, insurance companies are already making decisions like that. You don't have to dig too far online to find tales of people whose treatments for things like cancer have been denied by their insurers, and who died while waiting for their appeals to be heard. It's been going on for years. Why are the Repubs not shocked about that?

That's harsh, but the truth. Sara Palin, when she found out she was going to have a defective child, could have taken steps to insure she had a healthy one, whom the rest of the country won't have had to care for.

Keith in CA   August 9th, 2009 11:49 am ET

Palin whines about comedians making jokes about her family, but she doesn't miss an opportunity to exploit them for her own twisted agenda. She's the lowest of political bottom feeders.

anti liberal   August 9th, 2009 11:49 am ET

sad american,

that's great Illegals go to doctors offices instead of the ER so that will save money you're right. But exactly WHY are we covering those that don't pay into the system better than those of us that do??

Oh and is there some new increase in doctors in the US that i haven't heard about? Medical school rolls going up becasuse all i hear is there are LESS doctors.

So wait, its already hard to get a doctor's appointment now although not impossible.

When we add 50 million to that system without adding doctors to the system, sure the ER's will be slower and it'll lower costs but what about the wait times?

If a wait time for an internal medicine doctor is now say a week on average won't it ballon to 2 or 3 by adding all the illegals in there?

that's the problem with liberals. they only think one step in front of themselves and not to the reprocussions much further down the line.

Dan   August 9th, 2009 11:49 am ET

This is being presented as a he-said-she-said, when in fact Palin's allegations are demonstrably false. Under the bill, the government will not make healthcare decisions for participants. That claim is debunked on the Politifact website under "our latest guide to the health care distortions." The claim related to euthanasia or allowing people to die is also debunked. Palin is lying.

landon kelsey   August 9th, 2009 11:48 am ET

what we have now would greatly encourage euthanasia

When I lost my job I was in the line at the county ER BenTaub for 6 hours

level 10 pain

I thought about the scene from "Soylent Green" where Edward G. Robinson is put to sleep at his own request.

A big beautiful room and beautiful attendants wre furnished.

The attendants gave him a liquid to drink with beautiful music..

I though about another line to a dumpster where people take a potion and climb in the dumpster.

Now THIS is the "plan" that would describe the GOP and Cheney.

Forget all the useless poor homeless people with no hope.

If anything describes the GOP, this is it.!!!

Liberals/democracts seem to refuse to see or believe the obvious even when it affects them. Instead of addressing issues, they they attach the person. Grow up dems. You are truly pathetic. You refuse to question anything. You accept all from your Masters as the truth, and keep trying to pick fights with conservatives/repubs over personalities instead of debating issues. When are you going to wake up to the fact that ALL of the politicians in Washington are liars and are not representing us the voters, including you. Where is your anger that you no longer have a voice in what happens to you? As far as town hakll meeting being orchestrated, bull s..... We are angry and telling the politicians WE DO NOT TRUST YOU.

I'm so sick of this. People are getting crazy. We just want to help people who can't get affordable healthcare, or are excluded because of pre-existing conditions. Haven't you had enough of the control these insurance companies have on YOUR HEALTH? How you employer HOLDS YOUR PHYSICAL WELL BEING in their hands????? Come one people! No one's going to take your private health care options away. There will be another OPTION for you IF YOU WANT IT. No one's telling you what to do. Just give people a public option.
This is crazy. Can't you see insurance companies, healthcare providers, drug companies all want to keep control and make tons of $$$$$$$$$$ OFF OF YOU and your WELL BEING?
So done with this. Fine, don't help the less fortunate people out there. Fine. Bet you consider yourselves CHRISTIANS too, huh???

I don't know what she said about assisted suicide, but her comment about “worthy of health care" is spot on

I don't respect her and wish she would go away, but the healthcare I grew up with is long gone and we are now at the mercy of a whole health industry that is judging “worthy of health care.”

Our healthcare needs an over haul, and this is a comment from Palin worth of the discussion

Mr. Dean ... liberals and democrats have been telling the country for years that incrementalism just doesn't happen. But we all know that it does! If the health care bill takes even a tiny step towards, or opens a door just a crack towards euthenasia .... then euthenasia doesn't need to be mentioned in the bill .... because next year or the year after that the liberals, the democrats the activist judges will take another step or open the door a bit farther .... and we the American people will eventually find ourselves with a bill that not only supports euthenasia but will probably make it a hate crime to oppose those that support euthenasia.

There seem to be still a lot of people left that are utterly uneducated, easily derailed by lies, uncivilized, cowardly, backward, and too lazy to think for themselves. The power of money, used to mislead and to make even more money of the backs of ordinary people, is very much alive. If one hears the rampages of a Mrs. Palin (and others), reads some of those “contributions” and “blogs” run by Fox News (fair and balanced – if that is not a joke in itself!!!) one finds no discussions about politics, but clear examples of the loss of all respect, all thoughtfulness, all integrity, and all honesty! Those people should be very ashamed of themselves and quit making things up! Or is that really the American Way? Hope not!

This entire debate is absolutely PATHETIC! As someone who had to dea with an elderly relative without an advanced directive, I had to make gut wrenching decisions about my mother's end of life. Had I known what she wanted, I could have taken the appropriate action according to what she wanted, not what I thought was best. Nobody should have to make these decisions except the people who are in that state. The fact that help with this type of ADVANCE decision making will be made available to everyone at no cost is a BLESSING, NOT EUTHANASIA. The Republican conservative hoodlums who are trying to stop the REAL conversation prove themselves over and over again to be ignorant, unevolved pigs. May they all go to Hell!!

Hey Brian,

American's have the best health care int he world? Are you even remotely serious? People in your country DIE every day because they have treatable illnesses but no health care with which they can afford the treatment.

Can you imagine having a cancer that has a high response rate to Chemo and not being able to get that Chemo because you have no insurance and no money? Ethan Zohn recently said that even with a good health care insurer he pays $22,000 extra for each 2 treatments he has. Who on earth besides the rich can afford that??

In Canada we don't have the perfect system, but everyone who is legally in the country is covered and if you can't afford the $54 a month then it's put on a sliding scale for you. This means that EVERY person can see a doctor / specialist / have cancer treatments etc. Everyone gets treatment if they seek it. How can that be worse?

And, by the way, some of the best cancer research / treatments are done in Canada and so not only do we have coverage for everyone, but it's some of the best in the world.

And what about having a serious car accident, and not being able to be admitted to a hospital because you don't have insurance.... again would never happen here.

Many Americans tend to think they live in the best and most forward moving / thinking country in the world and that's just not true. If you saw yourselves through the eyes of the world, especially people with your views, Brian, you would be embarrassed. Obama may not be perfect, but he is trying to bring you folks a step closer to catching up with health care.

Palin is a moron. Obama's plan might not be perfect, but for the sake of the Lord All Mighty, PLEASE get your facts straight before you accuse the president of the US of wanting to kill your baby. You're the one complaining about the press treating your children unfairly. Maybe you should stop using them as political props and be a Mom for once.

Furthermore, the majority of care given to kids with disabilities are through publicly funded programs. To my knowledge, we have yet to euthanize a retarded kid. Actually, Sarah never mentioned "euthanasia" in her post concerning Obama's healthcare bill. Here is her quote:

"The Democrats promise that a government health care system will reduce the cost of health care, but as the economist Thomas Sowell has pointed out, government health care will not reduce the cost; it will simply refuse to pay the cost. And who will suffer the most when they ration care? The sick, the elderly, and the disabled, of course. The America I know and love is not one in which my parents or my baby with Down Syndrome will have to stand in front of Obama’s “death panel” so his bureaucrats can decide, based on a subjective judgment of their “level of productivity in society,” whether they are worthy of health care. Such a system is downright evil."

She is talking about the "rationing" of healthcare, which would exclude the undesirables.

It is Howard Dean who is making things up!

Jan,

you are absolutely right.

And you know who pays for the shortfalls in Medicare, Medicaid and Charity care so that those anesthesiologists can afford to stay in business.

The private plans, that's who. That's why they're going up in cost, no other reason.

Every month around here we get notices from insurers that XYZ hospital is leaving their network, WHY? Because they need a 30,40,50% or more INCREASE in their reimbursement due to lessening medicare payment schedules. An insurer has two options:

1-agree and raise everyone's rates to cover the new costs

2-deny it and lose the network hospital and many affilliated doctors that come with them.

This is the problem and the proposals going forth do nothing to address that issue.

Americans are out of touch because most of them are completely misinformed by the likes of Sarah Palin, Rush Limbaugh and Conservatives for Patient's Rights. These individuals and lobbyist groups see absolutely nothing wrong with spreading erroneous and false information because it helps line their pockets and furthers their cause. The best way to arm yourself is with reliable information–check out the facts for yourself, turn off Rush Limbaugh and pick up a friggin newspaper. STOP READING BLOGS. Blogs are full of nothing but one person's (typically uninformed) opinion. The greatest danger to America ignorance, and we have plenty of it.

Let's think about this for a minute. Obama has already said that the elderly should "learn to live with" the ailments caused by getting older. I'm sorry, but anyone that thinks there won't be someone sitting up there deciding who should get what care, is sadly mistaken. They are talking about cost control. It won't come from reducing the amount paid to hospitals. It won't come from reducing the amount paid to insurance companies. It will come through refusing care to people who "don't deserve to live." The bill doesn't have to "state' it. Read the bill. Look at the language. Don't believe what those "honest" politicians are saying. Read it!

Kevin in Ohio   August 9th, 2009 11:37 am ET

But when President Obama has already broken a promise to allow a bill a time to read it and have it online then why should we believe him??

Oh and the framework for the bills are what's taking shape now. Will it be exactly like that, NO, but NOW is the time to make your feelings known. Its amazing that activists of the past are now telling people to pipe down just because it espouses their agenda.

Maybe Bush should have told ACORN to pipe down? How would that have been taken by liberals???

Those saying "pipe down until something actually happens" are complete hypocrites to THEIR CAUSES of the past.

Jan   August 9th, 2009 11:35 am ET

My physician friends have pointed out that although there is a much in the bill about controlling physician reimbursement, there is nothing in the bill to provide relief for ovehead expenses. So doctors will still have the same costs – rent, malpractice insurance, staff salaries and benefits, etc., on substantially less income. ( and for those of you that say Medicare rates are fair – just one example – anesthesiologists receive around 30% of their usual fee from Medicare, and there is already a shortage in this specialty). Most doctors – believe it or not – went into medicine because they wanted to help people, not deny them needed care. However their prectice is a buisiness, and you can't stay in practice if you can't cover your overhead. If Obama cuts too deep and the program is too intrusive, I know quite a few good doctors who will simply retire rather than be government employees.

That's like taking the post office and purposefully underpricing overnight packages at $3 anywhere around the world where UPS and FedEx can only do it for $13.

Once you do that you'll find two things:

1-taxpayers will be funding the post office to make up for the shortfall . .. hmmmm.

2- no one will use FedEx. Why would you pay more???

THAT'S THE REAL ISSUE.

hey anti liberal, don;t talk to me about the bull of HSA's. I had the original MSA Archer, the precursor of the HSA. The theory was that with the buildup of money in a medical IRA, the patient would take more responsibilty for his care by negotiating with health care providers to get the lowest price. As a libertarian republican, I bought this market driven drivel hook line and sinker. Buying complex medical care and procedures and negotiating them is not like going to the Wal Mart and comparing their prices on orange juice to the nearest Safeway. It looks good in economic theory but in reality I was out of my league. We need to be covered just like our republican and democratic politicians are covered. Why don't you ask you local conservative BS artist politician about what kind of health insurance he gets via the US taxpayer. That would be a real eye opener

How much of the Obama rhetoric is made up? Hope the Congressman gets Obama to sit down and go over the bill line by line as Obama said he would do. Then the truth will be there for everyone to see, If Obama refuses to keep his word, that will be further evidence that all is not as he would have us believe.

Dr. Lamar Odom

Obviously you are one of the doctors who's been skimming Medicare for unneccessary procedures, and trying to protect your turf. You are also probably one of those doc-in-the box healthcare providers who will reap the windfall from this legislation. How many paid vacations, free samples, and kickbacks do you receive from pharmaceutical reps? You obviously have an agenda, while calling your critics names. I watch all networks and read all news sites, left and right, and can formulate my own opinions. The most successful physicians and surgeons don't like what they see going on in the healthcare reform, now called insurance reform. Wonder why the democrats changed the name? My opinions are with the majority, don't tread on me.

stranger in an increasingly strange land   August 9th, 2009 11:29 am ET

The other choice is to allow the insurance companies to decide whether you or your child or parents can get medical care. Which group do I want? An impartial group (like a jury of your peers) or the company that makes more money by denying you the benefits.

Come on people. Some insurance coverage is better than none. How many of you have been denied coverage because of age, existing conditions, weight, family health history, etc. We are already paying for coverage for a lot of folks that do have problems and use county and state emergency rooms. If they can't pay for them the government picks up the bill. Then you and I pay for it anyway.

Ancient Texan   August 9th, 2009 11:28 am ET

Kaydee @ 10:57–You've nailed this debacle right on the nose, better than any poster here. I agree 100%. ********Dr. Dean is putting words in Sarah Palins mouth, but even with the sketchy, not quite formed bill, I have a strong feeling that the final bill will include the meat of Tom Dashle's book. He covers the elderly with statements that in the older folks, there'll have to be decisions about withhold more expensive procedures in view of age, since pain medications might be more fitting. And who do you want making that decision? You and your Doctor? Or Some twit in D.C.?

Max44   August 9th, 2009 11:28 am ET

Lots of political and historical revisionism going on here this morning. Not only is our President a dangerous "Tyrant" trying to euthanize old people, now Hitler was a liberal and Palin is a genius.

Roosevelt and Truman were liberal Democrats and they won against the fascists who were NOT. My goodness, now I see the problem with people sleeping in history class during High School

Jim TN   August 9th, 2009 11:28 am ET

These Republicans who keep saying go read the bill and you'll see are just ridiculous. Any bill at this point is just precursory. You can't read the actual bill anywhere. There are 4 different ones and more to come. After all the committees release theirs they will come back and be negotiated on to find the happy medium between all of them. Then it will become available to read in its final form and go to the floor for a vote. Most of what these people are reading that is labeled as "the Bill" is made up B.S. The right just wants’ to believe what it wants’ to believe. Even if it is completely unfounded.

K W In louisville   August 9th, 2009 11:28 am ET

Cnn's latest polling of the nation should have taught the network one thing. How out of touch with the people they are. Every time a vote came around the entire news staff was voting two letter grades above the American public. Maybe they should consider replacing their staff with people who are more in tune with the American people and write and publish stories that holds this government more accountable for the crimes that it commits against it's own people. After all, the media was meant to be a check and balance to unlimited power.

jane   August 9th, 2009 11:28 am ET

James   August 9th, 2009 11:27 am ET

Exactly. These people who beat up on sneators, who blindly follow Palin and Limbugh are on drugs.

The funny thing is, if there is reform, and if there is somekind of public option this is what will happen...

1. Workers Compensation will be no longer neccessary
2. State Health Care systems such as Medical in California will no longer be neccessary.
3. Expensive insurance to cover worksite injuries will not be neccessary.
4. Medicare will be bundled in with public options or public iption will be bundled in with Medicare reducing costs SIGNIFICANTLY.
5. Military families and military personnel do not have to have that louse insurance they got now.
6. We do not have to have a separate VA system as EVERYBODY will be covered. It will be easier for veterans to seek health care.

Public health care helps people, particularly businesses. Only people fighting this are insurance companies and insurance company backed people.

I can keep going on. But people, only people who lose out here is the lawyers, the insurance companies, people who prey on the weak and sickly.

Rush Limbaugh gets PAID. He is protecting his sponsors. FOX has taken a position to bring down this Govt. So nothing they say is going to be positive. Palin has to make things up, she needs the publicity and reaction. And there are a group of people who are just following blindly these piped pipers. And Republicans need to get elected. They need a cause, they need a gay marriage ban like thingy, to beat the opposition with. It is health care!

It is funny. I seriously doubt the people who listen to Rush would understand what I am talking about.

floyd   August 9th, 2009 11:27 am ET

Palin was ok with goverment insurance for Trig when she was governor, if it is so bad why did she accept it for her family.
These people are truly evil, they know if anyone is deciding who ives or die are the insurance companies that will do any thing in their power to deny payments for people who needs expensive medical care.
Palin and people like her who do not encounter this problem are the ones that are telling these lies, until they experience it they will keep doing and saying what they are doing for POLITICAL reasons.

I think it is funny how people care commenting on something they have not had the privilege to read. I am unsure how many in Congress or the Senate have been able to read the whole 500 pages, but it is interesting that as the bill has been sitting with our representatives longer more information is coming out, and where there is smoke there is usually fire. I have recently been told by a few Physician colleagues that the hospitals they work for are telling them that FOR EXAMPLE; if they have a patient that has a cancer recurrence, the treatments will be limited under the new plan and if it does not go into remission again after a certain number of treatments they are to send the patient to Hospice. They have also told me that upon a cancer recurrence, the patient will have to sign a DNR order (Do Not Resuscitate), which while not euthanasia, is similar in the fact that if you are deemed "broken" according to the Obama Medical System, you are unworthy to save if you have a heart attack because you already have something that may kill you. Who knows whats true, but we are uninformed and Mr. Obama tried to get a bill through Congress and the Senate without people being able to read the whole document, it seems likely there are things in there which we would consider "a removal of our rights". Call your congress person and ask them to explain the bill – that is where the truth lies.

Andy   August 9th, 2009 11:25 am ET

For those of you that are thinking purely along party lines, both right and left, you need to understand the facts. The fact is the 70% of Medicare spending supports 10% of the Medicare population. This is the population that is in the last year of life. Taken more broadly, about 1% of the nation's population accounts for 30% of the nation's healthcare spending. No attempt to cut growing healthcare costs will be successful without closely examining the root causes of these "disportionate" statistics and finding a way to manage them more closely. What does this mean? It means that a plan to manage expenses will have to have some sort of limit to the care provided at or near the end of life. This means the elderly, the terminally ill and the critically injured. These are the sorts of things that should be in the national dialogue and should be examined closely. If we just rush through legislation, these are the types of issues that will get by us until it's too late. The debate we are having in these blogs shouldn't be about Palin or Dean, it should be about what do we as a nation think is fair in terms of a national standard of care, especially near the end of life. What should the public be expected to pay for and what latitude should insurance companies have in making these decisions? You should be screaming about this, not about how much you hate Palin. If you choose to ignore the details, believing that your politicians (left or right) will do what is best for the entire country, then you are a fool and deserve what you get.

Ray   August 9th, 2009 11:24 am ET

Mary   August 9th, 2009 11:23 am ET

End of life care is not referring to euthanasia, it is referring to DNR and other issues concerning end of life care. Anytime anyone goes into the hospital or has a new doc, they are supposed to be asked if they want to be DNR classified. This has been around for years and years. You can and will be able to change this status at any time but the new bill is saying is that it will be mandatory to update this every 5 years.
What Palin needs to do is research what she is saying and stop the games. She is a Rush wanna be and like Rush she is only hurting the GOP.

As a Canadian I can't believe the garbage that is thrown out there to try and scare the American people about health care... I would rather have to wait a couple of weeks to see a specialist (and that is only because of a shortage of doctors) not because of the health care system and know that I don't have to worry about whether I can pay for it or not than to listen to all the special interest groups scared that they will not make as much money if health care is reformed.. I say let all the republicans cancel their health care and transfer it to those who don't have it and see if they still are in favour of no health care for the poor..

Does everyone out there with health insurance understand that your doctor does NOT get paid what he charges?
Do you all understand that he DOES NOT get to decide what specialist you see or what lab tests you get?
Do you understand that your insurance company decides who you can go to for what reason and how many visits you get?
If you think this is untrue I dare you to ask your doctor if the insurance companies he is FORCED to contract with so he can see his patients pays him what he charges.
Ask him how much he writes off per year per his contract with your insurance company.
Ask him how many people he employs in his office to obtain referrals and authorizations so you can go to a specialist who also contracts with your insurance company. That specialist doesn't get paid what he charges either. But I bet you pay a copay everytime you see your doctor don't you. So you pay, the doctor writes off part of his charge and the insurance company makes the decisions. And you don't want health care reform because why???

Brian   August 9th, 2009 11:19 am ET

Everything Obama is doing is unconstitutional. Non of this is what the founding fathers intended. They tried to create a national gov. that was small and that allowed the states more control. Obama and his hacks are trying to grab as much power and control as they can. They will pay in the next election cycle. People think that its a right to have health insurance. Where in the bill of rights or the constitution does it say that all americans should have the gov. pay for their health care. Where does it say that your employer should pay for your health insurance. If you want health insurance you should pay for it yourself instead of trying to take more of my tax money. Its not my job to pay for everything those less fortunate thinks they are owed. If you want something change your circumstances, get off your butt and do it for yourself. Stop running around with your hand out waiting for the gov. to fill it.

OK, it's time to publicly issue an edict to the American People about these people like Palin and the Repugnant Party:

US Citizens: If you hear it on Fox"News", Limbaugh, or from a Republican "Politician" take it on faith that it is either an outright lie, it's taken out of context, or it's simply incorrect. Take the two minutes it will take on the internet to verify that it is a lie, and then make your political decisions accordingly.

That would pretty much cover the lunacy of these statements from the wingnuts and it would be a pretty trustworthy way to live your life in general.

Ed in Reno   August 9th, 2009 11:17 am ET

Man are people stupid. No one is going to put Sarah Palin's baby to death because the medical costs are to high.

The so called "Death Panel" Palin is referring to is nothing more than you being able to sit down with your doctor and discuss a living will, hospice care, and pain management when all treatment options are exhausted and your illness is terminal.

They are helping you prepare yourself and your family for the inevitable, not strapping you down, injecting you, and turning you into Soylent Green.

This is the same thing I went through when my wife's cancer had spread too far and all treatment options had been tried and were not working. They helped us set up hospice care in our own home she could spend her last 11 days of life at home with her family instead of in a hospital room. They also prescribed pain medication so that while she suffered through her last days she wouldn't have to feel it...as much.

I am tired of hearing people who have no idea what they're talking about scream about how this plan will require the euthanization of the old and the sick. I know it may be asking too much but, please, try to get a clue.

Rumsfeld   August 9th, 2009 11:17 am ET

Mir says: "The government should not mandate end-of -life conversations especially when the MD is paid extra for doing it ("incentivized") ".
Not having these discussions is also a conflict of interest as when the patient is receiving life supporting treatments without quality of life for ever, the doctor still gets paid, likely a multiple of the sums he/she will receive from the interview. This is an MD responsibility!

The media reports the exceptions to the norm. Being an exception to the norm, Palin and her organized "angry mobs" cohorts know they will get the media's attention so they pull the strings and the media puppets dance to the music played by the right wing fringe. Small number appear amplified. Disturbing yes, overall impact, only in the moment. In the long run, more damage to the Republican Party; recently tea bag, followed by birthers, now a health care smoke screen; all equaling the uprising of the radical, racist Omama haters driving themselves into a smaller and more dangerous fringe sub group.

Now I'm getting sincerely worried that we're going to lose Sarah Palin as an occassional player on the national stage with these increasingly wacko comments.

This kind of fantasy will quickly move her so far to the right side fringe that the news media ( yes, even CNN) will stop covering her.

Palin lied. I am shocked. Are you sure it was a lie and not just the fact that she is not very bright. She couldn't figure out that the political group Todd was with wanted to break away from the United States when that was on the front page of their website. The only state with worse politicians is Louisiana (At one point Louisiana's choices for governor were the head of the state KKK and a former governor convicted of taking bribes while in office. As for rationing care in Canada – don't be a fool. I have lived the Canadian system for most of my adult lif and it is WAY BETTER and CHEAPER – WAAAAY CHEAPER than the privatized Insurance run joke of a system right now. This is the real hope for the Republican party.Michelle Bachman will make a good running mate.

Elizabeth Morris   August 9th, 2009 11:15 am ET

I believe that the Republican Party and John McCain did Mrs. Palin a huge disservice in bringing her into national politics. She was comfortable and in her element; her constituents (most of them) loved her even though she was beginning to get the reputation of using her political position to punish those who she percieved were somehow wronging her so she would probably have won re-election for a second term.

So where is she now? Having tasted "fame", she just can't seem to get it that her time in the spotlight is done. They coached her, tarted her up, bought her some beautiful clothing and thrust her into instant celebrity; her ignorance was painful to watch.

The Republican Party, emulating the "dirty tricks" era, are now sending their people to disrupt town hall meeting designed to inform and answer the questions we all have about the "health care bill". Sarah is still yearning for the spotlight by making outrageous statements that are terrifying folks – these last comments on euthanasia are the worst. The Party is being run by a bunch of thugs who are as dangerous to our way of life as any outside threat with Hannity, Limbaugh, Newt and the rest on the air every day spounting lies, twisting words and undermining a sincere effort on the part of the current administration to address the concerns affecting millions of us. This amounts to subversion; this is what we should all be afraid of.

Molly Weasley   August 9th, 2009 11:15 am ET

The language in this bill about having end-of-life discussions was actually written years ago by a Republican congressman who is a physician. It's about doctors getting paid for what many of them are already doing.

Think about it. When Republicans in Congress rushed through the Terry Schiavo legislation and Bush flew back to Washington to sign it, people were outraged (except for some right-wing loonies) that the government would step in and tell them how to make decisions about treatment. That was done by Republicans, not Democrats. Does everyone remember how appalled the country was at that legislation?

There is no slippery slope. The language in this bill specifically says that Medicare will pay for consultations between physicians and patients IF patients want to discuss end-of-life care. This is the same kind of discussion that doctors have with patients now. (And don't forget - the number of living wills went up greatly after the Terri Schiavo incident.)

This has nothing to do with nonsense about "death panels." This is a payment issue for doctors - that's all. Congress periodically adds more services to the Medicare program so that seniors will get more comprehensive care. This is one of those instances.

Of course, it adds to the overall cost of health care, and we all pay the price. Which is why we need to restructure the system and why we need health care.

I'm amazed that people can be so dumb and listen to nonsensical talking points.

Adam   August 9th, 2009 11:15 am ET

Dear Kaydea –

You're right. A "Death Panel" would be a terrible thing. Awful. Inhumane. Criminal.

Except there's NOTHING LIKE THAT ANYWHERE IN ANY HEALTH PLAN being discussed. Not now, never was.

The paragraph Ms. Palin refers to is merely one that requires Medicare to pay for long range planning counseling ONLY IF THE PATIENT ASKS FOR IT.

Long range planning is a good thing. Everyone should do it. I've done it, and I'm only 50. You should do it too, Kaydea. It's simply the process of deciding in advance what YOU want the doctors to do if you're ever seriously injured or seriously ill. Do you want the hospital to keep you alive at all costs? Or do you want to refuse extraordinary measures to keep you alive? This is a very personal choice, and should be made by the patient, and the patient alone. And that's how it's written in the health care bill.

The long-range planning provision simply requires Medicare to cover the cost of preparing a living will every five years. It doesn't REQUIRE you to make one, and it doesn't REQUIRE you to make any choice for or against prolonging your care. It's completely up to you.

Oh, and one last note. This particular part of the Health Care bill was suggested and written by a REPUBLICAN member of Congress. It's a good, smart, helpful part of the bill, and an example of how, despite all the stupid political bickering on the surface, the Dems and Repubs are actually working quite well behind the scenes to craft an important and useful health care reform bill.

Every insurance company I know (i likewise work in an insurance agency) have HSA's with the highest deductibles.

You know WHY they have them???

Becuase they control costs the best, that's why.

nice try!

Lois   August 9th, 2009 11:14 am ET

I urge all to actually READ the bill, and not take some private citizen's opinon. I predicted that Palin would now write hit pieces to show just how "intelligent" and "informed" she is. (actually, I don't believe this woman has written this comment, nor the op-ed piece) When the media insists she actually debate the issues she spews about and she does, why even take the time to read them? She will not debate because she does not understand them. READ the bill for yourself. This nutball only wants the press.

Dennis   August 9th, 2009 11:14 am ET

I really believe both sides are lying. I think the solution is somewhere in the middle. Health care does not need a complete overall. Changes are certainly needed, but the current system works well for a majority of the people. Let's find ways to get coverage for those legal citizens who don't have coverage, or are unsatisfied with current coverage and leave the rest of it alone.

William   August 9th, 2009 11:14 am ET

Well lets see if CNN will post this. If it is allowed then everybody will know that "truthteller" doesn't know jack! However if CNN doesn't post this then that tell's me that CNN IS nothing more then a Democratic machine, which I've been told but still dont believe.
I am a Republican! You may even consider me a far right wing republican! and although I really liked Palin in the beginning there is no way I would vote for her to be president. She couldn't handle be the Governor of a state, how is she going to be president? Now to her comment A) I think the comment about euthanasia is going a little to far, however, the content of the comment is absolutely true wheather you want to believe it or not. The government will decide wheather a person recieves any health care or not as well as what type of care that person deserves. That's one thing Republicans are up in arms about, as well as a lot of Democrats. We've got Medicare and Medicaid, why not just revamp those systems. Is that a type of socialism, Yes, but it's not the type of Nationalism that Obama is trying to push on us. Most Americans dont realize that we have lived in a Socialistic Democracy since FDR's administration and we've done quite well until just lately. Now Obama wants to force the country into a new stronger socialism and it's not going to happen – anybody ever watch "For Whom the Bell Tolls"? B). Regardless of comments by confused housewives there are a lot of us that refuse to believe that Obama is leagally President. I'll bet dollars to doughnuts that if Vice President Bidens birth place was in question that he would produce a birth certificate in a hot minute!

Anyone who thinks the Nazis were socialists is clearly ignorant of history, politics and basically uneducated. Read Mein Kampf as a starting point. Nazis were the ANTITHESIS of socialist – essentially a brand of fascism and about as right wing as you can get in both philosophy and execution. For the record, both socialism and fascism have proven to be failed systems of government. Randy – you need to go back to school, get an education and stop making erroneous, uneducated, embarrassing comments on-line.

As someone who works in the insurance agency, I've seen many of these so called 'cadillac' plans for Unions. And, guess what... they're not different than any others. However, their group administrators simply push harder to get the insurance company to do them favors on expediting claims, etc. You want to know what people get the BEST insurance? People who work for the insurance company. And they pay less for premiums, too.

Now that's off the table..

On FOX News- Fox news is a conservative station. They do NOT tell both sides, they bash anything democratic, or put enough spin on it that any democratic point is Demonic. I used to respect the fox network... not anymore.

For this bill... as a democrat, I think the idea is an interesting one. As a moderate democrat, I don't think that the cost is worth the benefit. This should not be a rush job- look at what's going on with France's healthcare system. I don't want ours like that. I wouldn't vote for this bill as it stands. Good idea- bad execution.

I would urge everyone who has an opinion on this to write their representatives for their state.

A couple of days ago, I received a bulletin from my health insurance carrier urging me to have a discussion of end of life questions with my family, my attorney, and my doctor. They did not suggest that they would pay for a counseling session with my M.D. in preparation for a living will or power of attorney. What is new?
For anyone who did not know, the health industry is very much involved in the consideration of health care reform, spending millions of dollars each and every day.

I don't know where all the fearmongering is coming from, but ignorance is a very dangerous thing.
My mother was diagnosed with colon cancer from her colonoscopy and was admitted for surgery soon afterwards, there was not undue delay. Moreover, she needed a quadruple bypass and was again admitted within 2 weeks for this surgery and is alive today.. Do not let people who are making up stories about the Canadian health care system misle you. I would rather be able to walk into a walk in clinic and be able to get a doctor to look at me rather than have to bypass medical care because I cannot afford it. Everyone here that works has access to health care because both the employee and the employer kick in monies to support this system. If you're an entrepreneur then you buy your health insurance, simple as that. It's unbelievable that there are people that support denying a person health care because it's somehow a government intrusion...please.

coach   August 9th, 2009 11:11 am ET

If our economy is to prosper in the long term, health care reform must take place. Meaningful dialog is important to structure the reform and political preference needs to be set aside during the process. Those who make false statements knowingly to incite, scare and bully are practicing a form of terrorism to subjagate and control others. Terrorism is a dreadful word and should not be used casually, but that is what some are practicing. We are a better people than this..

connecticut yankee   August 9th, 2009 11:11 am ET

Sarah Palin is a moron. Why would anyone listen to her?

Kaye Martin   August 9th, 2009 11:11 am ET

Every patient should have these discussions with their physician. It is known as a "living will". You make a decision about what kinds of measures you would like to have made to prolong your life in the event of an terminal illness. Some people choose to have every available means used to preserve their lives; others might decide that they do not wish to hang on through the use of tubes or other artificial means. I have had such a will in place for over fifteeen years. The point of having patients review those directives is that a person's wishes after five years might change.

What the former Governor said is irresponsible! It is also irresponsible for her to use her Downs Syndrome child as a pawn in this debate. It is my understanding that she said that her children are off limits.

Hankers   August 9th, 2009 11:10 am ET

Proving Mather Right says: "Health Care is a commodity, not a right. If you want it, get off your rear end and work to put yourself in a position to get it."
And for those that find themselves not in a position to afford the private health care due to downsizing or have been denied affordable coverage due to a previous health issue? Do you want to throw them overboard? No one is denying you your choise here, they are just providing an alternative for those without private option. Moral societies view health care as a right.

I doubt Palin knows what euthanasia means let alone how to pronounce it.
I have felt her parenting skills were seriously lacking from day one when she was ready willing and able to put her children out there for public display in order to win votes. She is the LAST person who should be a telling anyone else what is good or bad for kids. She is STILL pandering the baby of hers. Calling him her "down's syndrome baby". My GOD!!! He is a baby and hopefully, in spite of who his mother is, he will grow to be a fine young man and a well adjusted adult one day. But one thing is for sure, Obama's health care plan will never hurt him. But think of all the other babies healthy and not so healthy who, right now, are not receiving proper health care because they don't have health insurance. I guess those kids aren't as important as Trig now are they.

RGSpincich   August 9th, 2009 11:09 am ET

AS usual the Democrat involved creates a falsehood, attributes it to an opponent and then argues against it.

Palin did not say "euthanasia" was a part of the Obamacare. She said the lack of care could be deadly. Big difference. She didn't even utter the word that Dean took offense to.

Dean continues with his incoherent scream.

wayne   August 9th, 2009 11:09 am ET

It is heartbreaking to see all these Republicans who have nothing constructive to contribute but fear and propaganda. It's a shame. I challenge them to give up their medical insurance since they don't want the uninsured to be innsured. These people are just selfish.

Djak   August 9th, 2009 11:09 am ET

Sadly, Palin didn't even make up this lie. She's parroting it. Here is a quote taken from an article at FactCheck.org: "On former Sen. Fred Thompson’s radio show, former lieutenant governor of New York Betsy McCaughey said that the House’s proposed health care bill contained a provision that would institute mandatory counseling sessions telling seniors how “to do what’s in society’s best interest … and cut your life short.” There is the basis for the "euthanasia" claims. Sarah heard it and decided to spout it off as her own. She doesn't even have the brain cells to come up with her own lies.

Cardimom   August 9th, 2009 11:08 am ET

Making things up is Palin's specialty. She's proven that beyond a doubt. What I cannot understand is why there are people who support her, let alone believe anything she rambles on and on and on about? Are people that "naive" (I'm being polite here)?

The Republican party is all for making health care affordable enough for universal access.
Look closer at what little you can find out about ObamaCare. It raises the cost of health care in the US dramatically. This program does not reduce costs or increase the quality of care. Our economy is in no shape right now to take on this huge extra burden.

Ann   August 9th, 2009 11:06 am ET

What is all this Hitler / Nazi talk? It isn't applicable at all. If it were, they should have been comparing Bush with Hitler, taking over countries to to force upon people his agenda and his vison of how the world should be. He invaded Iraq, Afghanistan and was planning to invade North Korea. I'm not standing up for these governments, but the facist, imperialistic comparisons are much more appropriate here than with the Health Care issue. The Republicans and especially Sarah Palin have finally hit the point of desperation.

It is so disasapointing to see Ms. Palin unable or unwilling to engage in this important conversation in a way that could actually contribute to the dialogue. Instead, she uses fear to incite people at at time when we need to be having an open and honest conversation about a subject that affects us all. She is using the same tatctics, (FEAR) that contributed to the run up to the Iraq war. Disappointing and disingenuous.

In the medical journal The Lancet Obama's special health policy advisor Ezekiel Emanuel wrote that if healthcare has to be rationed, he prefers the "complete lives system," which "discriminates against older people.
Dr. Emanuel suggested that health services should not be guaranteed to "individuals who are irreversibly prevented from being or becoming participating citizens." He said "an obvious example is not guaranteeing health services to patients with dementia." And you think you are going to have a choice about when you die??? Think again my friends...think again.

If Robin and Steven Richards represent the alternative or anything superior to Palin's comments, logic has indeed been turned upside down. The ignorant vitriol of these comments exceeds by orders of magnitude anything Palin stated. If anyone, from anywhere questions the wisdom and consequences of the current administration and its supporters of the left, people like Robin and Steven attack them as idiots. The parlence of the current vocal left is the speech of dictators and arrogant ideologues. It is thoughtless and is why liberty must always be defended. There are always people who use others to consider anyone who disagrees with them to be idiots and dangerous. Right or left, that position leads to despotism, never to useful or rational thought. Intelligent people don't waste there time listening to such ignorant noise.

Mir   August 9th, 2009 11:04 am ET

And where in the quote posted by CNN does Palin say the bill would lead to "euthanasia?" Mandatory counseling in a 5 year period under the public option for the elderly, while important for end of life decisions, is still a personal decision to make. The government should not mandate end-of -life conversations especially when the MD is paid extra for doing it ("incentivized") This is a moral decision that also carries financial concerns for families involved. Mandating and paying the MD to have this counseling is a gross infringement on a patient's privacy and right to choose how they want to live. Palin is not saying it will lead to euthanasia. But if the goal is to cut costs, then exactly, what incentive is there from the economic perspective to put the elderly on life supportl, or have a life saving operation, if that's what they and their family happen to choose?

DD   August 9th, 2009 11:04 am ET

Mediocrity and fear of looking foolish often puts people in defensive postures and, like a cornered vicious animal, they will mindlessly attack, primarily out of fear. In Mrs. Palin's case, it's fear of failure.

Jk   August 9th, 2009 11:03 am ET

I may not agree with the Health Care Bill as it's being proposed, there are issues that cause me concern; but having said that the current health insurance situation is no better. Panels already exist and determine what will be paid and what will not, what treatments we will receive or not. if you are lucky enough to be able to afford a PPO and go to the dr. of your choice and not have to deal with precertifications youare are indeed fortunate. A caste system already exists within our current healthcare system. If you do have insurance, you are indeed fortunate. I am self-employed and pay through the nose for insurance that covers practically nothing; but I can't be seen by a physican if I don't have insurance. Oh and then to find a physician that accepts my insurance. Things have to change.

As to the garbage that spews forth from Ms. Palin's mouth, well anyone with an ounce of intelligence would think twice about what this woman preaches. As with most extremists they prey on ignorance and fear. But, the wonderful thing about our country is that even an ignoramus like Ms. Palin can have a voice, but then so do I!

Dan> Doug, Eugenics was a program used by the Nazi's, a far-right movement, to try to create a master race.

This is the most ignorant statement I've heard in a long time. First: Fascism is almost always a left-wing movement. Second: Eugenics is a "progressive" program. Margaret Sanger, who founded Planned Parenthood, wanted to wipe out "undesirables"; primarily minorities. Hitler took the idea and ran with it, but it was supported by the American left, and still is to this day. African Americans make up about 12% of the American population, but make up 26% of abortions. It seems like the "progressive's" plans are working.

chris3dog   August 9th, 2009 11:02 am ET

Ann   August 9th, 2009 11:02 am ET

ldk: Do you even know what end of life care counseling? Apparently not! It is not about encouraging people to commit euthanasia. It is about having paperwork set-up for healthcare power of attorney (who will make your healthcare decisions if you are so ill that you are not capable) and your DNR status (who want everything done, some things done, or nothing done if you code). So making end of life care counseling mandatory is a good thing. It ensures people (the INDIVIDUALS themselves) have control over their healthcare to the very end. I work in a hospital and see this type of counseling happening all the time. It is bad NOT to have this paperwork in place and to NOT have someone you trust (who knows and will follow your wishes) set-up to make those decisions. And it should be reviewed to make changes you wish as your life / relationships change.

People who keep saying "read the bill" either haven't or hope that others won't and will just accept their lies as truth. There is nothing resembling Death Panels or forced euthanasia. I have read that portion of the bill, and even though it is written in legalese, a little reading for comprehension helps.

All it talks about is making end of life counseling available. I just had to do this with both my dad and step mom. Today hospitals can keep us "alive" way beyond what is natural, and sometimes you actually have to tell them to stop. That's all this is about.

Palin isn't just a fool anymore, she is a liar trying to stir civil unrest by making gross distortions that preclude rational debate.

kayway   August 9th, 2009 11:01 am ET

does anyone else find it funny that the only people she cares at all about is her own family? somehow I think her little boy will fair just fine no matter what reform brings. Now about everyone else....
I don't believe in euthanasia, but at the same time I think many American's DO have a need to prolonging people's suffering for their own comfort, many elderly suffer terribly, they should have the right to end their suffering, and not their kids who "don't want to lose Grandma". People treat their pets more humanely than most people treat the sick and dying.

reeba   August 9th, 2009 11:01 am ET

Euthanasia as the word itself is not used..... however there are guidelines stating consultations will be held with the elderly as to how to cope with "end of life". In reading "the Bill" - a conusltation would be required every 5 years after a certain age..... 'living wills', hospice care, etc. would be discussed, as would be reducing medication and diet that would ease the inevitable. No elderly person I have known (parents, grand parents, friends) ever discussed those topics with their doctor. If anyone – -it was with Family, and that is where the discussion belongs.

CNN = Moveon.org   August 9th, 2009 11:01 am ET

All you democrats are so ignorant, is quite comical to read your rants. You prove yourselves to be so full of hate and ignorance, you would rather rant than use facts to back up your arguments.

In the meantime, REAL Americans that care about our country, know and read what is coming out of Washington, and that is why you have so many people opposing this "Health Care" bill.

Also, you are phrasing it wrong too. It has nothing to do with health care, but rather health insurance. Everyone in America can get health care, but not everyone can afford health insurance. Those without insurance will have to pay more for their health bills, but it is incorrect to say that people don't, or can't, get health care.

Democrats have so skewed people's minds, or they thought they were, but many people are waking up to their deceitfulness, and finally starting to think for themselves, rather than voting and rooting for a slogan.

Health care reform is an issue that has been in public eye for decades. Long Island Newsday has been running a series on the year 1969. A few months ago it was reported in that series that congress was looking into reforming health care. 40 years later and it is still being debated. It has been brought up by both parties during that time. The only reform that I see is the coverage congress gets. When all legal citizens of the U.S. have the same health care they recieve, then we can say there is reform

I'm truly amazed that Palin wonders why she is constantly the target of political and media scrutiny. She continues making unfounded comments on issues about which she has no clue. Like most people, she very likely has NOT read the 1100 page bill, so when she makes comments like these, just makes herself look ignorant and foolish.

Brian   August 9th, 2009 10:59 am ET

When will CNN start telling the truth about this Socialist Healthcare bill. I have read it. People need to wake up. OBAMA CARE will take away your freedom. I don't want my tax money to pay for someone else's health care. Go get a job. I want the gov. out of my life. Obama said that if your old and need a heart pace maker, just go take a pain pill. Screw Him. Our health care system is the best in the world. Why would I want to go to a system like Canada that rations care. When you have current technology you have to pay for it. That stuff isn't free. The liberals are putting themselves in a corner. IF CNN would report the actual news instead of Obamas propoganda they would report that in the last congressional election poll republicans were leading demorcrats by 6 percent. In 2010 the republican will take back the House and all of Obamas socialist agendas will stop.

Fred, you have been conned by the Conservative leadership that you trust – and not for the first time.

If anyone in America proposed a euthanasia panel, there would be headlines in red ink a foot tall in every newspaper in America. Do you remember the Terry Schiavo case? Euthanasia for one little lady in Florida who had been in a coma for years. It made headlines all over America, and every Republican in Congress was screaming her name for months. Can you imagine that the "Liberal Media" (like the Wall Street Journal, the local papers in Birmingham, Phoenix, Houston, Denver, and Juneau) has ordered a blackout on the "euthanasia panel" because they are controlled by a secret cabal of Liberals?

Why would Liberals, who complain that many Americans have no access to medical care, create a panel whose job it is to withhold medical care from Americans. We Liberals want EVERYONE to have the medical care they need.

This is paranoia run wild, and it is fueled by con-men in thousand dollar suits in whom you have placed your trust, Fred. This is insane.

If you want the real truth, know this: A secret cabal of Conservative corporations has hired lobbying firms to manipulate gullible Conservative voters into opposing programs that would benefit all Americans. Why? To reduce their taxes.

Sarah Palin is a quitting, loser. She is a seething laughed at, ex-governor who likes to ignite discord--remember her "hanging out with terrorists" fear mongering efforts on the campaign trail???? She's an idiot who does not KNOW anything!!! I do not trust her words or actions-she incites reckless discord and hatred!!

Kaydee   August 9th, 2009 10:57 am ET

Dr. Dean may speak the party line but please tell us how some panel will do a better job of end of life issues than a family and the medical professionals they have a relationship with currently. You may not like Sarah or what she stands for but she has a right to say it. However, the current administration would like to silence anyone that does not agree with them. I wonder how everyone will feel when the government can reach into you private banking account and pull whatever they wish to pay for this program and you will have very little to say about it? This political ferver right now is about power and control. Why the rush to get this bill through? Why not put this bill to the vote of the people? why on earth would we support a bill that our own congressmen won't even be on? This is a dangerous bill that begins the erosion of the constitution. This medical reform needs to be something handled over a longer period of time and with the private sector heavily involved. I for one I am tired of being mandated to by a bunch of people that are no longer listening to the will of the people.

Christine   August 9th, 2009 10:57 am ET

Again the fear mongering continues with erroneous stories and totally false information designed to scare the American people into turning their backs on health care reform. Please wake up Sarah Palin, stop with you outlandish desperate remarks, it's those kind of tactics that have resulted in a loss of respect for you and your party, and the continued distrust and disdain many Americans have for politicians in general. Believe it or not, we may not be able to see Russia from our backyard, but we can see through the BULL that you sling out and were using it for fertilizer!

You must not have a critical thinking brain in your head if you believe Fox News just gives you the facts. I watch all three channels and to be quite honest Fox rarely just reports the facts. What you get is a Right perspective without much support of anything that does not come from the Right. Name one prominent progressive featured on Fox News. At least CNN has Dobbs and MSNBC has Joe and Pat, but Fox on the other may have a moderate from time to time. Moreover you rarely get an international perspective that is not Right biased. I've come to the conclusion that people who lack intellectual curiosity watch Fox because its easy for them to have others do their thinking.

Dennis   August 9th, 2009 10:56 am ET

I wonder how many of the dittoheads here who admonish health reform supporters to "read the bill" have actually themselves read any of the several bills that are currently working their way through the House and Senate committees.

I thought not. There's not "a" bill yet. Contents of the various proposals are changing daily right now. It's just right wing talking points again.

And to clarify, yes there are bills that would establish committees to recommend which treatments are worthwhile or not in different situations, but these are an attempt to offer guidance where there is currently none... all of them leave final decisions up to the doctor and patient.

afp   August 9th, 2009 10:56 am ET

To Ric... I disagree with you. You say that "she [Palin] knows what she spews is baseless." I contend that she doesn't have a clue. She really doesn't know what's in the bill – she is just making it up as she goes along. It's very clear that her motives are to incite those that follow her, Glen Beck and the rest of the Fox crew. They want to make people believe that this bill will turn the elderly into Soylent Green

'They' cannot have this health bill pass because it would be a blow to attempted power re-grab. So... they incite the weak minded who have supported their drivel in the past with half truths and out right lies. It's so sad, really, that these people, these followers, who decry the health bill as the downfall of western civilization are the ones who will really end up needing it in time.

Everyone on here is just as bad as the politicians we hate. All I am reading in your posts is finger pointing, and vicious name calling. I'm not saying I support whacko lady, but I just think that its time to discuss the actual facts of what is going on. If we hold the media to the same standards that we hold ourselves to, maybe the coverage on ALL of these new organizations will once again become unbiased. The only time this country came together was for 9/11 and that lasted about .... 3 months.... so why can't we grow up cuz we just look like complete idiots to the rest of the world.

i have read the bill and i'm a conservative obviously by my name. This euthanasia talk is wrong, its not what they're doing. I'm more concerned about the bill with the takeover by the public plan as its constituted in the house. The blue dogs rolled over on the issue of reimbursement to providers. One evening they said they needed to negotiate with providers which is correct and the next they adjusted their ammendment to read "The secretary (of HHS) will choose between the average of privately negotiated prices and Medicare rates."

Let's see which would you CHOOSE when given a choice. Those crying that the house bill won't have a strong public option that will destroy private plans are absolutely wrong.

I hope Rep. Ross enjoyed his term in congress because his constituents should know he has no backbone to stand up to the liberals of California like peLIEsi and Boxer.

Maybe they should take a closer look at their state that is bankrupted by their social programs and see what they're planning for the country.

Also i say for those that claim it'll be funded and paid for, ie defecit neutral look back to Medicare's inception. They said it would cost $6 billion a year by 1991 and it actually cost $61 BILLION.

The government does a bad job of estimating these things.

Going with a government run option is akin to taking your car or truck that is speeding over a cliff and throwing your wife and kids in the backseat and slamming on the gas.

While the woman in Florida did sound crazy she wasn't wrong, MEDICARE IS BANKRUPT.

KK   August 9th, 2009 10:53 am ET

Of course Palin would make these statements about health care reform. She hasn't read the bill. It is time for Katie Couric to interview her so we can actually find out what she doesn't know, again.

Could somebody favor the nation to tell exactly what were the gift s given to those who vehemently opposed the efforts of Ms.Clinton to implement the health care reforms during Clinton presidentship? Where are they now, what positions they are holding now and which party they belong to. Can Mr. Fareed Zakaria do the research and tell the nation correctly and boldly or CNN invites the most knowledgeable personality of impeccable integrity to tell the nation. This is highly relevant to judge the motive of those who are opposed of the health care reform.

Thanks

GO ahead people, keep listening to politicians, and defending whichever party you support blindly. Euthenasia is strong, people will not be "put" to death, but as anyone who actually took the time to read the bill would know, treatment will be rationed, and those deemed for whatever reasons to not deserve it, won't get it. Whoever thinks our Govt' should be running any of this, is looking for a handout...period. One would hope that the statement "history repeates it's self" would be understood by now. NOTHING our govt' runs domestically is sucessfull. Health Care is a commodity, not a right. If you want it, get off your rear end and work to put yourself in a position to get it.

This guy continues to show why even the Democrats abandoned him. He opens his mouth and inserts his foot. Just like all of the Liberals in charge of our country, I can guarantee you he has not read this so called "Health Care Reform Bill". Sarah Palin's choice of words may not set well with people, but she "hit the nail on the head". I was once ignorant enough to think our country would never leagalize abortion, but with the wrong people in charge, it happened. Even though the majority of Americans are against it. Majority rule went by the wayside years ago in America. If we, as citizens are foolish to think they are not preparing to control who lives and who dies, then we deserve what we get. The government in this country is not capable of running a small business, let alone a major healthcare program. They will be the ones that get the real health care and the rest of us will try to survive on what they "permit us to have". The politicians, along with the American citizens in this country, need to read the Constitution and Bill of Rights to learn about government "of the people, by the people and for the people". There is also something to be said about "State's Rights". America – Time to "take a stand" and let them know they serve us, not that we serve them.

Belgium   August 9th, 2009 10:51 am ET

Why are we still talking about Sarah Palin?

Gregg   August 9th, 2009 10:51 am ET

Palin's whole methodology is to put two statements together, one of which people agree with, and use it to make the second one seem true. "Everyone should support the troops and stop saying negative things about me in the press". "If you don't want your gun taken away, don't support environmental protection in Alaska". "If you don't want euthanasia, don't support the Obama health care bill".

Candy   August 9th, 2009 10:51 am ET

I am AGAINST Health Care Reform.. UNLESS.. we can fix whats broken first. We spend billions more on the WORST case scenario of what Medicaid Medicare was supposed to cost us. I would like to see those cost brought under control.. then I am all for it.

Dave in Illinois   August 9th, 2009 10:51 am ET

It's funny that the word "euthanasia" doesn't appear in Palin's quoted statements, only in Dean's. She talks about rationing healthcare and bureaucrats making those decisons, and Dean demonizes her by making it sound like she's predicting government legislated assisted suicide.

The Democrats keep saying we need to do this today and trust us to do it right, while the Republicans are saying we need take the time to do this right and not screw it up like the stimulus, cap and trade and cash for clunkers.

We all need to know what actually is being written into the House and Senate bills to come to an informed conclusion.

The government cant even balance a checkbook let alone manage healthcare. I wouldnt let the likes of Obama and his cronies watch my dog let alone my health. Go find someone else to bother and quit micro managing our lives. When you politicians learn to operate within a budget and manage money like a business or family then come talk to us but until then leave us alone.

Common Sense   August 9th, 2009 10:50 am ET

In a hospital setting the goivernment already is paying for end of life discussions, but at that point it really is a little to late. The healthcare bill will allow a doctor to bill for this time in their offices at a time the person can make decisions for themselves.

How many of the people who are against a healthcare plan have insurance that is mostly paid for by other (employer, government, medicare)? Let those that pay for their own insurance get some input on care that they are already paying for others.

Lee S   August 9th, 2009 10:50 am ET

Rationing will inevitably follow and euthanasia will inevitably follow the rationing. It won't be called that. It will be called "death with dignity" or a variation of palliative care. But there will be procedures in place to "relieve the suffering" of people who are too sick to be worth the rationing coupon. It's really that simple. Anyone who says otherwise has something to sell.

Joe Publicini   August 9th, 2009 10:50 am ET

It's too bad that people who are for this bill are ignorant of the facts contained within.

Nestor, Austin, TX   August 9th, 2009 10:50 am ET

You haven't been talking to Dr. Ezekiel Emanuel and Cass Sunstein then, have you Dr. Dean? They have a plan to ration healthcare so that priority care goes to those 15-40. Sorry old people and sorry kids with special needs, you're too expensive for the Dems.

Gerald   August 9th, 2009 10:50 am ET

Sorry Howard , it is you that is misinformed and why your at it democrats read the bill , if you pay taxes and currently have insurance your going to get screwed. I believe the system could be improved but the same folks that are managing social security and medicare can not be given control of my health care.

Robin   August 9th, 2009 10:50 am ET

I guess Howard Dean doesn't read the bills, just like many democrat lawmakers. Under the plan there WILL be a board that makes health care decisions for individuals. Palin dramatizes it a bit, but it's more or less true.

Well Fred, can the bill be any worst then the HMO and insurers who are currently denying our claims! Why exploit your child in that way? Do make things up. Does the bill states what she actually said? Do not make up assumptions or DRAMITIZES ANYTHING! SHE IS A QUITTING GOVERNOR AND AN IGNORANT ONE AT THAT! ALASKA IS BETTER OFF!

chubby   August 9th, 2009 10:50 am ET

What Governor Palin said is actually true. Once you have lived past the time of productivity then medicines and care are rationed which in effect is killing the person under this supposed to be Government Rationed Health Care Plan. I like how howard dean is the voice of reason and truth, I guess he could no longer afford to practice medicine due to no one would give him malpractice insurance so he headed to DC. Fits right in, cannot fix stupid.

sheila king   August 9th, 2009 10:50 am ET

We already have government run and subsidized health care in Medicare and the VA. Why don't we just flush these away if we don't want so called "socialized" medicine? You don't hear Palin and the other Republicans advocating that, do you? What? No one has ever heard of a "living will" or discussions about end of life with patients. This is some dirty secret? I work for the government in a healthcare capacity and know this is nothing new. If there is something about euthanasia in the current bill - which, by the way, is still a work in progress - show me Idk. I'd love to see it. Not to muddy this, but shouldn't a terminally ill person in their right mind be able to choose whether or not to continue painful and pointless treatment if they wish? Where in the constitution does it indicate that they should be kept on life support whether they wish to or not? This is what this is all about. Not euthanizing someone by proxy.

I urge anyone who is scared of a "death panel" to visit their current insurance company (if they even have one) and watch their panel decide your right to get any number of tests based on whether their panel thinks you need them. NOT your doctor deciding, just some non-medical bureaucrats. All of you who have encountered this, PLEASE speak up about the atrocities the insurance companies have been committing for years! The government plan is NOWHERE near as harsh, and also has much better chance of preventing people from entering bankruptcy after needing a simple medical procedure. Caste system? Are you kidding? We already have one! Maybe we should just outlaw insurance altogether and then everyone can fend for themselves, with the money they have!

nola   August 9th, 2009 10:49 am ET

Sara is the biggest liar on this plant. When she was admitted to the hospital to give birth to her baby – one of the many questions she was asked "Do you have a "Living Wil". This documents informs the medical officials if you wish to be put on life support – if you become unconscious while in the hospital. Oh but maybe they asked and she just didn't have the mentality to comprehend what they were asking.

I am begging the media to PLEASE STOP REPORTING ANYTHING THAT THIS WOMAN SAYS OR WRITES.

Mike, TX   August 9th, 2009 10:48 am ET

Thank you Mr. Dean. Palin needs to be called out on her ridiculous and disgusting lies (not to mention her own blatant hypocrisy) more often. Unfortunately, Palin is not the only one making up lies regarding the proposed health care reform bills. House Minority leader John Boehner has also repeated these claims, as have numerous less noteworthy republicans. Now, I am not an expert an health care policy so I must rely on information from others. Therefore, I would like to pose the obvious question to Republicans: If you repeatedly and blatantly lie to me about things that I can readily confirm or deny (Yes, I actually did read the text of the bill), why should I trust you on more complicated matters? Why should I trust you at all? If one side in a argument has to rely on distractions, misrepresentation, distortions and outright lies, shouldn't that tell you something about the strength (or lack thereof) of their position?

For TWELVE years the Republicans had an opportunity to FIX this problem of Health Care...

...they CHOSE to kick the can down the road, and are now doing the bidding of insurance companies...

...The vast majority of their partisan conservative constituents, who are at the tip of this obstructionist health care town hall spear, are neither knowledgeable nor honest about the particulars of this Reform agenda...

...How can RATIONAL human beings be against FIXING this existential economic threat through:

1) Universal coverage- no one can be turned down for pre-existting conditions, lose your job and you'll STILL BE covered

2) Public OPTION... CHOICE of whether or not you want a public or private plan. For those who TRUST corporate America over government to provide their healh care...have at it..

3) Single payer OPTION- gives more power to consumers because the premium pool is larger...If corporate sponsored health care is so good, and government is so "INEPT", WHY are the corporate insurance mafiosi so afraid of gov't COMPETITION?

4) No one goes bankrupt due to medical bills

5) Choice about which MIDDLEMEN Health Care PIMPS are eliminated!

6) Creating a business friendly health care system, which takes the BURDEN of costly health care off the backs of the business community, allowing U.S. companies to effectively compete with other industrialized nations who provide health care for their people.

7) Eliminating 30% overhead costs to U.S. Health Care, by eliminating administrative and advertising costs that current corporate health care pimps levy against the U.S. public. BUT, for those who support multi-million dollar per year insurane company executives (lobbyist and media) salaries, you can CONTINUE to support them...

THINK America!

Palin exceeded her level of competence when she was elected mayor of Wasilla. The mystery is why the 24-hr networks still cover anything she says. The answer to the mystery is that they will do anything to get viewers, even promulgate lying horror stories that mislead the public. The sad fact is that many people do not have the time or the ability to read and understand a complex issue like health care reform, so they turn to whoever shouts the loudest, like Palin, Hannity, Dobbs, and the King of Liars, Rush Limbaugh.

Many of the people who come out to disrupt town meetings at the urging of these demagogues are either being manipulated by them or the radical fringe of the Republican Party. I almost feel sympathy for them; they are being used. Some of the others are angry because they are frightened by the idea of change. And, sadly, some are just racist bigoted wingnuts who can't accept the fact that a black man has been elected President. This last group is the one we should really worry about.

Then, when the truth comes out, and she's on defense because of her outlandish accusations, she does what??....she plays the victim! She knows the good people of this country love to support the underdog (victim), and it's there she gets cadre of supporters who throw $$ at her, and in turn she will spew more baseless nonsense. It's a vicious cycle, and the 20% of dummies who support her just lose more of their money. That's it in a nutshell. She loves the celebrity – has seen the bright lights of "stardom" and wants it to continue at others expense. Talk about your evil.

Issano   August 9th, 2009 10:41 am ET

This lady is the great pretender...and the teller of tall tales. When you amke something up , means you LIE. She is missing a few pennies out of a dime.
The Republi(cons) do not want health care reform because they did not craft the bill. Lets remember, the Democrats won the election. The racist party of America should just act like real Americans and wait for the next election.
The Republican party are too extreme, reckless and unpatriotic!

Candace Fort Bragg, NC   August 9th, 2009 10:41 am ET

Read the bill, it is all about euthanasia!

TruthTeller   August 9th, 2009 10:41 am ET

Dear Republicans,
Do not waste your time trying to post a comment. CNN will only allow negative opinions against Palin; selective posting to distort what
the average Americans are feeling. They stack the deck 30-1 in favor of liberal rants with what they allow on their site. This is why their TV ratings are in the tank. The once powerful news organization is now an empty shell just like the rest of the mass media. Average Americans just want the facts, we are grown up enough to make our own decisions. Do they even realize why the Fox News audience is greater than MSNBC and CNN combined, and still growing? It's not conservative only news but view points from both sides. This is the problem with mainstream media, they treat us like children in elementary school. A Journalism Degree is easy to get unlike Engineering, Accounting, Jurisprudence, and Medical. Why do they think they are so smart? I'm probably wasting my time because CNN moderators will get their feeling hurt and ban this posting. I won't hold my breath.

GA, FL   August 9th, 2009 10:40 am ET

Way to go, Sarah Palin, spouting irresponsibly, feeding on fear and hate-mongering still.

Mrs. Palin just might become even more virulent now that she does not have to behave with some minimum level of decorum expected of one who holds public office.

She and the rest of the far right are like social arsonists.....starting fires, fanning flames and creating fear, thereby diverting focus and energy away from high-minded dialogue and equitable problem solving.

ldk   August 9th, 2009 10:40 am ET

Have any of YOU actually read the bill or do YOU blindly believe what the politicians are telling you? How do you distinguish who's lying? The bill makes end of life care counseling mandatory for anyone on Medicare and shall be done every 5 years or more frequently if their condition worsens. Can you say slippery slope?

Lucille   August 9th, 2009 10:40 am ET

Thank you, Dr. Dean for setting Palin straight. She has done a lot of damage with her half truths. I will never understand why she became so popular with some seemingly bright people in the first place.

anti liberal   August 9th, 2009 10:40 am ET

What Linda Douglass SHOULD have been asked about Obama's Drudge report videos is this:

IF that was a lie and pieces cut together to make Obama look like a socialist, please go ahead and give us the FULL TAPE of the incident.

The problem is she can't. because HE DID promise the unions he would take over healthcare because its one thing they've been fighting employers over for years. They get their "cadillac" plans where non union employees get the plans the rest of us get.

That includes, teachers, government employees, EVERY UNION.

Anonymous   August 9th, 2009 10:39 am ET

Big government like Medicare and the VA make people sick???? Then why do they not want these two very government run entities ended. Why do too many Americans not even realize that they already have government run medicine and that it may be the only answer for them to obtain medical care in the long term? Other countries with "socialized" medicine have higher life expectancies than we do. Do we not trust that our government might be able to at least bring us up from 50th in the world in that respect? This is crazy thinking. Palin and other republicans are just muddying the issue to score political points and take advantage of the racial distrust of the current president. Otherwise their followers are little more than "sheep".

Buckeye4u   August 9th, 2009 10:38 am ET

When oh when will this Pathetic Palin just go away..I get so tired of reading about her half baked speeches....a 6th grader could do better. She is such a pathetic figure, how in the world would any woman be proud of her, let alone any man...

Owen Foizen   August 9th, 2009 10:38 am ET

The Democrats should not add a single Republican amendment to any BILL unless 50% of the Republicans will vote for the bill. All bills should strip the Republican amendments if they do not get 50% of Republicans supporting it.
By the way the Nit Wit from Alaska is a NOBODY.

Steve   August 9th, 2009 10:38 am ET

I wish the press would stop covering the inanities uttered by Palin. She is a self-made nobody and does not warrant the publicity she is given. She panders to the ignorant, of whom there are plenty. Stop empowering her with media coverage.

Fred   August 9th, 2009 10:37 am ET

I guess Howard Dean doesn't read the bills, just like many democrat lawmakers. Under the plan there WILL be a board that makes health care decisions for individuals. Palin dramatizes it a bit, but it's more or less true.

60's survivor   August 9th, 2009 10:37 am ET

anyone who knows sarah palin by now and what she stands for (herself) knew that already..she is a ticking time bomb – never let her get any higher office than Govenor – and she "blew" that!! People like Sarah Palin love to be the center of attention while claiming they hate the news media , ironically, they are the news media – TABLOID NEWS!! She has been "comic relief" for many - but be careful – stranger things have happened in world history – nut jobs do get into places where they can affect the lives of millions!!

Doug   August 9th, 2009 10:37 am ET

Didn't the Left try pushing Eugenics back in the 30's ?

SS   August 9th, 2009 10:36 am ET

Word, Dr. Dean. Sounds like Sarah should follow her own advice and quit making things up!

NicknAtlanta   August 9th, 2009 10:36 am ET

I don't usually agree with Sarah Palin – typically I can take whatever she says, look in the opposite direction and find truth. HOWEVER, that being said, the "health reform bill" or the bill to create death dealers, whatever you want to call it, is definitively an evil bill. For the administration to believe they have the right to make our health care system into a caste system is definitely evil. For the administration to feel that they can decide that an illness someone has makes them LESS eligible for medical care because they most likely won't be cured – that's evil. For the government to think they have the right to venture into my bank accounts – is unconstitutional at best. Without reasonable doubt they don't have he right to search and seizure.

I voted Democrat, but it's my sincerest hope that the Republicans and the American people actually get heard on this one, and Obama stops his partisan ways, and sends THIS bill back to Congress to try again, because it is the worst of the worst in "health care reform".

Ken   August 9th, 2009 10:36 am ET

Even the Republicans do not believe in Republican ideas. If they did, they would honestly debate the healthcare bill ( and every other thing Democrats want to do ). If their ideas, their predictions are better, then they would win that debate.

Instead, they make up lie after lie to panic the public into voting against Democratic initiatives. Its dispicable the contempt they show for democracy. I was once a Republican, but not for a long time and never again.

Larry   August 9th, 2009 10:36 am ET

For twenty years or more, health providers have grappled with the ethics of living wills, DNR, withdrawing support, etc. It has always been focused on what's best for the patient. I sat on our ethics committee for years. Palin is definitely brain-dead. How stupid can these people on the right be?

Former Repub   August 9th, 2009 10:35 am ET

This woman refuses to be interviewed so she can just sling filth from behind her Facebook account. That's what the teenagers are doing these days because there is NO ACCOUNTABILITY! How about she sit for an interview and back up her hate mongering comments?

How many of you saw Katie Couric tear her apart? That was my final straw as a Repub. I was too embarrased to say I supported that ticket. She couldn't create ONE coherent reply.

She and David Duke need to open a compound together.

Liz in DC   August 9th, 2009 10:34 am ET

I used to just think Sarah Palin was a moron. Now, she's become dangerous with her lies. It's time the Republicans muzzle the extreme wing of their party before they foment further civil unrest.

Bill N.   August 9th, 2009 10:32 am ET

When a politician makes such a wild statement as Palin did, why doesn't the news media call them out on it?

All they have to do is ask her to show them where in the health bill does it mention "death panels" that decide if someone is "worthy of healthcare".

These knuckleheads are almost always given a free pass by the media. The lack of accountability is what helps to fan the flames of intolerence and ignorance.

Annie, Atlanta   August 9th, 2009 10:32 am ET

It's a sad day for America when someone with the platform Palin has uses it to lie in a way that could get someone hurt or killed (by rabble rousing, which she apparently excels at). This woman is a disgrace, and her followers are ignorant haters. Very sad.

shakira ali   August 9th, 2009 10:31 am ET

Her comments do not even deserve a response. She opens her mouth to say the most far stretched nonsense ever just to create a stir. Thank god Alaska does not have her as Governor anymore. This woman should stay far away from any legislative and policy making decisions, because she has no idea what she's talking about majority of time. Good try trying to ignite the emotions of the American public by your nonsense lies.

bob   August 9th, 2009 10:31 am ET

But without making things up, how will the GOP continue to attack the Dems' plan without using a better plan as an example of what we should be doing instead?

IS IT 2012 YET ??   August 9th, 2009 10:31 am ET

Big government makes people sick, Doctor Dean. Please don't prescribe it. Now, take two aspirins, and call us in the morning.

Dave G   August 9th, 2009 10:31 am ET

Even if there was such a thing as government "death panel", I would sooner stand in front of it than the insurance company "death panel" that we have now.

Susan Frishkorn   August 9th, 2009 10:31 am ET

Get 'em, Girl! There is no law in America that says you have to know what you are talking about to speak out – or even write a book!

Finally I have heard from someone who knows less about Health Care Reform than I do. That makes me feel better. Thank you, Sara!

Hey Sarah...So how about in honor of the American soldier,ya quit making things up !!!!!

Libertarian   August 9th, 2009 10:30 am ET

and Palin strikes again! This woman lives to spread hate and create discourse. And her flock believe her!!!

Anyone else see the complete irony in Rush's "dittoheads" that call the rest of us "sheep"?

unshrub   August 9th, 2009 10:28 am ET

How foolish can people to believe Palin and others who continue to outlandishly lie about the health care plane! It's one thing to disagree, but when they come out and lie about it, that is crossing the line. However, there are some people who hate Obama and Democrats so much they will believe anything someone says that is critical about Obama and Democrats just because.

susie   August 9th, 2009 10:28 am ET

Did Dean read the whole health bill?

foday D   August 9th, 2009 10:28 am ET

Sorry Mrs. Palin, you are downright wrong.

Georgia   August 9th, 2009 10:27 am ET

Maybe Palin can use some of the $ MILLIONS that the Insurance Industry is paying her to speak out with such outlandish lies to pay for her family medical bills since the Insurance Companies won't cover her family anyway because of pre-existing conditions!!!!

No One has Ever claimed that this woman has even an ounce of Brains!

ldk   August 9th, 2009 10:24 am ET

“There's nothing like euthanasia in the bill."

That may be correct but the language that is there is starting us down that slippery slope. People need to stop believing what they hear the politicians say and go read the bill for themselves. Why ask someone to clarify something when you can go see for yourself. If you think you can trust the government you need to go talk to an American Indian.

Michael   August 9th, 2009 10:22 am ET

The problem isn't palin it is those that are so ignorant that they will follow every word from this person as if God himself has spoken

Who is more the fool – the fool spewing lies or the fool who believes them ?
