WASHINGTON (CNN)- Under increasing pressure to support President Obama's approach to health care reform, Nebraska Sen. Ben Nelson has cut a new TV ad airing in his home state that explains his position on the issue.
Nelson, a centrist Democrat, has come under fire from liberal organizations for not standing squarely behind Obama when it comes to health care. Democracy for America and the Progressive Change Campaign Committee are currently running a commercial featuring a Nebraska small business owner pleading with Nelson to prevent health care reform from being delayed.
In an unusual step, Nelson has taken to the airwaves in this new 30-second statewide ad to lay out his "principles" that he says are needed to institute health care reform even though he will not face the voters until 2012.
"You've probably been hearing a lot about health care reform," Nelson says in the commercial that will run for two weeks on broadcast and cable stations. "And like too much stuff that comes out of Washington it is hard to know what's fact and what's fiction. So, I want you to hear my principles straight from me. First, any plan must keep spending under control; help our small businesses; improve care; control costs; and most of all the plan needs to work for Nebraska. I'm Ben Nelson and I approve this message because you can count on me to always put Nebraska first. Always."
A source close to Nelson tells CNN that the Nebraska senator decided to have his campaign committee pay for the ad, because there has been "a lot of misinformation, confusion and commotion about health care reform.
"Senator Nelson sees it as an opportunity to get information out there unfiltered and as a way to connect directly with constituents," said the source, who spoke on the condition of anonymity. "The senator sees this as an opportunity midterm to remind Nebraskans about his independence and thoughtfulness."
To all these elderly people (and others) who are so afraid of changes in health insurance programs, why don't you quit collecting your Social Security checks since that is, in fact, a form of "socialism". After about 7 years, most Social Security recipients have already collected more than they put into the System in all the years they have worked, so those of you who have already gotten your money back, stop collecting social security and see how far you get without the "socialism" you are so scared of. Don't be hypocrites! Call your local Social Security Administration office and ask them to stop sending your checks, now, before your two-faced position is revealed!!
Uh, lets see, am I going to have a bunch of uneducated politician appointed councils decide my healthcare or am I going to let an educated doctor decide? I think I will let my doctor decide and keep the government out of my healthcare issues. Go away Obama your micromanagement of everything with the exception of controlling your spending is getting to the point of nausea. Government for the people by the people not for the king by the king. Hopefully this indiscretion will in fact solidfy you as a one term president.
I'm not sure if this article quotes the entire ad, but not once does the Senator mention helping to provide insurance for those who don't have it and can't afford it. I am very fortunate to have good, employer provided insurance. It's not right that there are millions without that option – and conservatives don't seem to care. Who do you think pays the bills for the uninsured who seek medical care? WE ALL DO! WE ALREADY DO!
Only true believers with straw-man arguments are allowed to ask questions at the staged town hall meetings. That isn't "debate" it is deception.
Bye bye, Nelson. All of you democraps who are supporting the government takeover of American health care can make plans for a new career next election cycle.
Yeah, socialist healthcare, like France, England, Canda, Norway, Germany, Japan, and other countries have.
BTW, all rated above the US in the healthcare department.
Why adopt that? We should just directly connect our payroll to our insurance companies, we're just the middle man anyway.
President Obama's New Hampshire Health Care Town Hall shed tremendous light and dispelled many of the lies and misinformation that have plagued this debate to date...
...Now, if only CNN and the rest of the msm will do the responsible thing and air it as much as necessary to ensure as many people see it as possible...
...after this, those who still oppose it (and continue to disseminate the same old tired talking points) can safely be placed in the category of those who will NEVER be able to accept an Obama presidency...
...for reasons I think we can all see...
This guy was called out by an small business person who needs
Medicare for All to improve his business & his fellow Americans!
Nelson is a Joke as well as a Tool for Corporations!
Senator please resign youre a disgrace!
Television time – easy way out. Get out there and face your people.
Why are the ring wing wing nuts trying so hard to stop healthcare....Oh i know they are still mad that Obama won the election and they cann't handle the fact that a smart handsome black man is the leader of the free world. So, hidden in all of this psyhco talk is the complete resentment that President is in charge.
Tort Reform is the republicans way of saying "It's ok to be incompetent. If you die because someone is having an 'off day', no biggie, it's just another dead person".
Republicans want to place a price on life, profit on death by insurance companies is all good, and if a doctor just isn't all there during your brain operation...it's not really important to expect them to be professional...death is a good thing.
They go on to 'assume' that some how, magically, the savings doctors get for killing people, will be passed on to you be an entirely different entity, the Insurance companies.
All of their goals and support can be traced to one undeniable common thread: "Make profit and or save money by killing people"
There's nothing you can say to these people. They still think obama is not a citizen. This healthcare debate is about sore losers in the last election. They are brain washed by lies, hate, and racism. Its been nice in the last few months to see the people get there country back from these unamerican wacko's.
Funny how the Republicans are crying about the Constitution when they sat back for 8 years and let Bush/Cheney tear it to shreads, and what is the Crap they want their America back just cant deal with a black man being President bottom line nothing more nothing less and these are the racisit nuts that represent the Republican party WHAT A SHAME!
Sorry folks. You are already pay for illegals along with everyone not insured. They go to the ER and cannot be refused treatment. When the ER takes a loss it gets passed on to those with insurance (that's capitalism at its best!). This translates to higher premiums for those with insurance.
Educate yourself people.
I don't care what this dude says...it is the right time for our nation to pass the health care reform...lot of idiots up there...lobby,,,lobby..lobby...just money greed...that's it...pres. obama, please see this health care reform is needed in our nation...god bless...pres. obama...
Arlen Specter held an honest, open debate on healthcare which reflected the PEOPLE. The senator from Missouri (democrat) did the same. Obama holds a FAKE pep rally with supporters that made him look as fake and phony as I have EVER seen. What an insult to the American people. They reported it would be an open debate and it was NOT. Washington is LYING to us about this healthcare bill. People do not be fooled by the fake bloggers and the fake town halls. This is about our healthcare industry and country going bankrupt and the government is trying to sell us snake oil.
Anybody notice that all the protesters were old southren white people......makes you think, and they call the youth of today out of touch.
