CNN Poll: Favorable view of Palin dipping

The favorability of former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin is down in a new CNN poll out Wednesday.
The favorability of former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin is down in a new CNN poll out Wednesday.

WASHINGTON (CNN) – Americans appear to be souring on Sarah Palin, according to a new national poll.

Thirty-nine percent of people questioned in a CNN/Opinion Research Corporation survey released Wednesday have a favorable opinion of the former Alaska governor and last year's Republican vice presidential nominee. That's down seven points from a poll conducted in May, and it's also nine points lower than the 48 percent who now say they now view Palin unfavorably. Forty-three percent viewed Palin negatively in May.

"Most of that change has come among Republicans and conservatives," says CNN Polling Director Keating Holland. "GOP voters still like Palin - two-thirds continue to have a favorable view of her - but she is not as wildly popular among GOPers as she was in the spring, when eight in ten Republicans had a favorable view of her."

It's unclear if the drop in Palin's rating is due to her resignation as Alaska governor, a year and a half before her first term ends, or if anything else she has done is contributing to the dip in her numbers. The poll was conducted July 31 through August 3, before national coverage of Palin's stinging criticism of President Barack Obama's health care reform proposals.

Palin is considered one a number of Republicans who may want to make a bid for the 2012 GOP presidential nomination.

"A 39 percent favorable rating makes it that much tougher for Palin to become president should she decide to run in 2012. Her favorable rating is almost identical to the numbers that former vice president Dan Quayle got just after leaving office in 1993," says Holland.

Quayle formally declared himself a presidential candidate in 1994 but withdrew from the race in 1995.

The CNN/Opinion Research Corporation poll was conducted by telephone, with 1,136 people questioned. The survey's sampling error is plus or minus three percentage points for the overall sample and plus or minus 6.5 percentage points for the questions of Republican respondents.

Every body is seeing her for who she is which is a lying racist fool that still mad that she lost and what to make President Obama life a living hell. It will be below 20 percent by 2012.

It appears that FINALLY people are getting a reality grip on Sarah Palin. She has nothing to offer as a potential POTUS except negativity, close mindedness, and ultra conservativtism. However, she should still run for President........makes Obama a shoe-in for 2012.

  3. Enlightened Voter

What republicans don't realize is that the MAJORITY of America is tired of hate, lies and fear that is so typical of the republican party and palin represents that well. She is a pathological liar, incites hatred. Hate, like a flame, eventually fizzles out. People are tired of the negativity. Most of us are becoming enlightened however there are still some (who make up the conservative/republican base that are not.)

Why did we waste money on this poll? Is she in office? She is a private citizen and she has the right to voice her opinion, whether or not you agree with her. Leave her alone!

    QUICK!!!

Obama's poll numbers are dropping like a stone.... Run more ticker articles on Governor Stanford's affair and Sarah (no longer in Government) Palin's "poll numbers".

We've got to do SOMETHING to deflect the focus OFF Obama's nose-dive in popularity!

When all else fails...do a negative story on Palin. That's what this is. WHO CARES???? WHY do you continue to go after Sarah Palin?? She is not the devil!!! All the DNC knows is how to hate people. When they don't have a good thing to say...they trash the other side. If it's not Bush it's Palin. Oh...and let's not forget the protestors. The funny thing is half the protestors aren't conservative...these are ALL people who hate the healthcare plan.

You are all making huge, huge errors in judgment and the conservatives are going to capitalize on it.

Sarah Palin has been shrill, whining, extreme, inconsistent, incoherent, blames everyone but herself and didn't finish what she started when she quit as Governor. Other than that, I can't imagine why her public approval ratings are dropping.

On a scale of 1-10 she gets a -10. Who told her to get into politics in the first place?

Perhaps her favorability rating is slipping because has continued to show that she has no depth of knowledge about anything, she says things that are so far fetched and out there that it tends to ruin her credibility, and she frankly isn't very bright.

  19. Pragmatic

No matter how "faithful" republicans are to Palin, its getting hard to explain why she cut and ran as governor and to defend her "death panel" statements.

Even "loyalists" know that she should have finished her elected term of office. This was an opportunity to show what her leadership style would be ... and its basically cut and run. When the going got tough – she went fishing.

Can't she disappear in the sunset. John McCain made one big mistake when he put her name in the limelight. Now she can't shut up. Should stay home, put her husband to work, and take care of her family.

I'm waiting for the shoe to drop. Whenever Obama gets in trouble in the polls and in the news something drastic happens to distract everybody. I wonder what it will be this time. Whatever it is...it will be fake and orchestrated by the Obama people and the liberal news.

I seriously can't think of one thing horrendous Sarah Palin ever did. Honestly...what has she done? I can't think of one thing. The liberals hate her?? That's not a reason to do story after story after story of NOTHING. Get over it....this is getting OLD.

I do not think anyone cares but CNN. I take that back as Jack Cafferty writes about her every other article. As men we all know Palin is physically attractive but Cafferty may need to reign that in a little.
