CNN Poll: Favorable view of Palin dipping

The favorability of former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin is down in a new CNN poll out Wednesday.
The favorability of former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin is down in a new CNN poll out Wednesday.

WASHINGTON (CNN) – Americans appear to be souring on Sarah Palin, according to a new national poll.

Thirty-nine percent of people questioned in a CNN/Opinion Research Corporation survey released Wednesday have a favorable opinion of the former Alaska governor and last year's Republican vice presidential nominee. That's down seven points from a poll conducted in May, and it's also nine points lower than the 48 percent who now say they now view Palin unfavorably. Forty-three percent viewed Palin negatively in May.

"Most of that change has come among Republicans and conservatives," says CNN Polling Director Keating Holland. "GOP voters still like Palin - two-thirds continue to have a favorable view of her - but she is not as wildly popular among GOPers as she was in the spring, when eight in ten Republicans had a favorable view of her."

It's unclear if the drop in Palin's rating is due to her resignation as Alaska governor, a year and a half before her first term ends, or if anything else she has done is contributing to the dip in her numbers. The poll was conducted July 31 through August 3, before national coverage of Palin's stinging criticism of President Barack Obama's health care reform proposals.

Palin is considered one a number of Republicans who may want to make a bid for the 2012 GOP presidential nomination.

"A 39 percent favorable rating makes it that much tougher for Palin to become president should she decide to run in 2012. Her favorable rating is almost identical to the numbers that former vice president Dan Quayle got just after leaving office in 1993," says Holland.

Quayle formally declared himself a presidential candidate in 1994 but withdrew from the race in 1995.

The CNN/Opinion Research Corporation poll was conducted by telephone, with 1,136 people questioned. The survey's sampling error is plus or minus three percentage points for the overall sample and plus or minus 6.5 percentage points for the questions of Republican respondents.

  1. not a Jackson or a Palin fan

I'd like to see her lobotomized. Then she will be like the rest of the GOP.

Sarah Palin is a joke.... lacks educations and makes incredibly misguided comments... She has essentielly called Obama a terrorist (by association) a communist and evil. Is this the action of someone who should be taken seriously for the presidency.... Incredible! By the way Palin.. where in the bill did it mention Death Panel?? Elected to "lead" not read should be your 2012 campaign slogan

Her poll number are dipping thanks with the help of CNN's slanted coverage of her. Good job destroying a potentially great role model for young women.

Yawn!!! Who cares....I still like her and I would vote for her again if she runs again for office. Another average American getting attacked again. While I don't agree with President Obama (or voted for him when I was a Dem) I would not wish any ill towards him. That's the difference when you are too far to the right and left, your hearts are mean!

oh come on!.....republicans love her self centered ego and her crude mouth and her spewing hatred even if its all just a pack of lies. They could care less. She is the ideal for the republican party and everyone knows it.

I predict she will move to the lower 48 by years end...make a pile money being a jerk with no redeeming qualities and by the end of 2010 she will run for President.

She will lose of course because the Nation as a whole would never put this ice cube in office but that will be ok with her because its the cameras and attention she craves most. Not the office, not the common good, not America, not the win....its all about getting attention.

Shocker that a CNN poll has Palin numbers down. Try a Fox News Poll.

Doesn't matter either way, I don't want Palin representing my party anwyay.

if conservatives are true to their calling, as GOPers claim, then the motto of Blessed Be the Peacemakers should resonate.....When Ms. Palin 'runs at the mouth' with accusations and allegations before thinking through the consequence or truth of her words then truely she is not acting as the peacemaker or truth teller. I suspect that is playing a big role in the decrease of her popularity.

Maybe the fools and racists in this country are FINALLY realizing how dumb she is. Unlike what the politically correct media in this country would like you to believe, CNN and MSNBC especially, there really are dumb people in this world who aren't cut for public office. DUmb people DO exist. Doesn't matter if you're a mother (a la Nora Jones of MSNBC), like giving birth to a child is a special prerequisite to being president, or if you're a woman (a la CNN and MSNBC). If you're unintelligent, smart, rural, uneducatred about issues or anything for that matter, you aren't fit to lead anything. How laid back and rural must Alaskans be to elect somebody like that? Ughh.

If she keeps opening her big, dun=mb mouth about health care coverage, another topic of which she knows nothing about, her ratings will drop to zero. It appears as if the "crusade" by the radicalized christian right and its yellow-bellied buddies on republican talk radio, is starting to backfire, and these numbers for Palin just tend to confirm it. Good. Keep talking Sarah. You're digging your on grave and taking Rush, Sean, and that racist Sessions with you. We thank you.

Why are we even concerned over Sarah Palin? What is the obsession with her and the news media? She doesn't even hold an office anymore! Get over it! This is not news.

do we really need to be giving Sarah Palins thoughts any purpose? Really? I wish she'd just disappear off the screen, never to be seen again!

This woman is truly nothing more than a pathological liar. No one can throw out the lies as she does and not have some sort of mental imbalance.

It is refreshing to see that others are finally waking up to her idiosyncracies. Any other politician displaying the antics she displays would have been laughed out of the arena months ago.

Having said that, I hope she continues to receive the limelight she so craves. Each time she speaks, the GOP suffers more credibility problems.

She continues to be the gift that just keeps on giving to the democrats.

Well as long as she keeps making the comments she has been, especially the Death Panel one is what is destroying her. Who wants a person like that in the white house. I think it will be very hard with only 23 percent reoublicans left to get a republican in the white house for a good many of years to come. Look how the republicans are conducting them selves at the town hall meetings, it is a disgrace. I am so glad that I no longer belong to this party.

During the election, Palin mocked then-candidate Obama for his work as a community organizer, in the process insulting the countless thousands/millions who give their time and energy to bettering their own communities, often without pay.

She mocked then-candidate Obama for "only" having written a couple of books, but didn't hesitate to cash in on her celebrity status and sign a lucrative book deal.

She touted her toughness by telling us how she could field dress a moose and by comparing herself to a pitbull, yet after returning to her governorship and the going was getting tough (and she felt lonely for all the media attention), she quit, insulting everyone's intelligence by expecting us to believe her lame excuses.

Palin is a desperate, nasty, loser hypocrit. It's not surprising her "numbers" are dipping.

If she is dipping, it is probably due to the continuous negative coverage the DNC state run media (CNN) gives her. Lets just hope they keep degrading her like they have the TEA parties and the protesters for whatever Hussein calls the health care debate now (it keeps changing as part of the "lets see what we can do to fool the people today" campaign) this thuggish administration is carrying on. A CNN poll means so little, they only ask dope smoking, non working liberals (is there any other kind).

The reason that she is sinking is because she thinks like southerners republicans. Those people have a mentality of hate and ignorance.
