CNN Poll: Favorable view of Palin dipping

The favorability of former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin is down in a new CNN poll out Wednesday.
The favorability of former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin is down in a new CNN poll out Wednesday.

WASHINGTON (CNN) – Americans appear to be souring on Sarah Palin, according to a new national poll.

Thirty-nine percent of people questioned in a CNN/Opinion Research Corporation survey released Wednesday have a favorable opinion of the former Alaska governor and last year's Republican vice presidential nominee. That's down seven points from a poll conducted in May, and it's also nine points lower than the 48 percent who now say they now view Palin unfavorably. Forty-three percent viewed Palin negatively in May.

"Most of that change has come among Republicans and conservatives," says CNN Polling Director Keating Holland. "GOP voters still like Palin - two-thirds continue to have a favorable view of her - but she is not as wildly popular among GOPers as she was in the spring, when eight in ten Republicans had a favorable view of her."

It's unclear if the drop in Palin's rating is due to her resignation as Alaska governor, a year and a half before her first term ends, or if anything else she has done is contributing to the dip in her numbers. The poll was conducted July 31 through August 3, before national coverage of Palin's stinging criticism of President Barack Obama's health care reform proposals.

Palin is considered one a number of Republicans who may want to make a bid for the 2012 GOP presidential nomination.

"A 39 percent favorable rating makes it that much tougher for Palin to become president should she decide to run in 2012. Her favorable rating is almost identical to the numbers that former vice president Dan Quayle got just after leaving office in 1993," says Holland.

Quayle formally declared himself a presidential candidate in 1994 but withdrew from the race in 1995.

The CNN/Opinion Research Corporation poll was conducted by telephone, with 1,136 people questioned. The survey's sampling error is plus or minus three percentage points for the overall sample and plus or minus 6.5 percentage points for the questions of Republican respondents.

CNN's golden child is dropping in the polls and, thus, runs a Palin story to make the lib monkeys feel all warm and hateful. CNN, your too predictable....

I cram to understand why this woman is still being discussed. She is a quitter and seems to be stirring up hate and fear amongst those who choose to listen. Can anyone imagine what Vice President Palin would be like?

No one should be surprised that her popularity is dipping.

She's becoming the same kind of big-mouth that we already know as Rush Limbaugh. The two of them should join forces and go up in flames together.

It's going to happen to both of them anyway. May as well have a great finale.

Palin a few weeks ago: "Can y'all in the media quit makin' stuff up?"
Palin a few days ago: "Obama's death panels would kill my baby."

Part of the reason people don't like her is that she apparently has all the self-awareness of a rock.

She's irrelevant, a passing fancy. She'll fade away like other failed politicians. Please stop reporting on her so she can.

Not to sound sexist by any means, but let's be honest; if Palin wasn't attractive (face and body), she wouldn't have been or ever be given the time of day. She has nothing to contribute to governmental discourse. The most amazing thing about Palin is that she's the most unqualified, uncurious, simpleton (she trumps Dan Quale) that ever made it as far as she has. And she's going to be wealthy for such an achievement. Only in America!

Are we to be surprised by that? Her own party rolls their eyes at her. I suspect those numbers will continue to drop once she writes a book.

Verbal vomit will be all over those pages. Her own agendas, that most folks don't agree with, will dominate her book. It will be big continuous defend herself party on those pages.

I'm sure she will attempt to make herself a peach of a gal you betcha!
When I women support her, I just shake my head. Their are ladies working at many postions who could a better job of running this counrty than her.

Since she completely lied about "death panels" and once again is using her children as props, I am hoping the number of unfavorable spikes. However there will still be the sheep that cling to the fantasy that this dimwit is capable of running the country but I have given up hope for them. They are being more and more marginalized as loons so let them think what they want. The downside to this trend is that Fido is losing her chance to become the GOP candidate in 2012 (Please please please do) so she can quit in October thus ensuring her utter embarrassment

Palin is intellectually inept and her appeal amongst a certain segment of the populace begs for sympathy and pity.I have never been sympathetic to intellectual frauds in her mold whose quest for attention is to whip up sentiment amongst the public. Her latest effontery in categorizing the health care debate in semantical summersaults ""Obamas Death Panels"" and the inuendoes about her challenged child and old parents is an assault to the intelligence of the American public.

Sarah Palin makes reckless comments which hurt the dialogue going on in the country. I can deal with constructive criticism and alternative plans which make sense. I cannot tolerate the nasty name calling that is going on with some of the far left. They do not speak for me.

    PATH TO THE DARK SIDE!

Fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate, hate leads to suffering. Palin is the poster child for inciting this.

Wow, it's refreshing to see that a majority Americans didn't buy into her rant about President Obama secretly wanting to use new health care legislation to grind up the elderly and handicapped into free meatloaf for illegal Mexican immigrants. Or whatever crazy tripe she was spewing last week.

Since when did lying become the same as "stinging criticism?" Mr. Steinhauser, you should be ashamed of yourself for giving any semblance of legitimacy to Palin's absurd and fanciful version of Obama's health care reform. Repeating what people say without regard to the truth of those statements is NOT the same as journalistic nuetrality.

Hiliarious. The media relentlessly trashes this woman and her family every single day for a over a year and then sanctimoniously reports that her approval rating is dipping. What a joke our media is.

If Barak Obama and his friends and family had been scrutinized (or trashed) one third as much as Palin, the American people may have actually had sense enough not to elect him. Sarah Palin is a good example of what happens to politicians who stand up to the special interest and rejects the status quo. As the saying goes, people usually deserve the government they have....and we do.

Big deal. The left does not like her. News flash, the right does not like Obama. His poll numbers are dipping too.

It's about time people woke up.
It terrifies me to hear "Sarah Palin" and "Presidential Candidate" used in the same sentence.
I hope she decides to go for the money and leave politics to pursue a career as an annoying talk show host.
Even though her ratings have dropped, she is still over rated in my mind and her 15 minutes should have expired months ago.
