CNN Poll: Favorable view of Palin dipping

The favorability of former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin is down in a new CNN poll out Wednesday.
The favorability of former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin is down in a new CNN poll out Wednesday.

WASHINGTON (CNN) – Americans appear to be souring on Sarah Palin, according to a new national poll.

Thirty-nine percent of people questioned in a CNN/Opinion Research Corporation survey released Wednesday have a favorable opinion of the former Alaska governor and last year's Republican vice presidential nominee. That's down seven points from a poll conducted in May, and it's also nine points lower than the 48 percent who now say they now view Palin unfavorably. Forty-three percent viewed Palin negatively in May.

"Most of that change has come among Republicans and conservatives," says CNN Polling Director Keating Holland. "GOP voters still like Palin - two-thirds continue to have a favorable view of her - but she is not as wildly popular among GOPers as she was in the spring, when eight in ten Republicans had a favorable view of her."

It's unclear if the drop in Palin's rating is due to her resignation as Alaska governor, a year and a half before her first term ends, or if anything else she has done is contributing to the dip in her numbers. The poll was conducted July 31 through August 3, before national coverage of Palin's stinging criticism of President Barack Obama's health care reform proposals.

Palin is considered one a number of Republicans who may want to make a bid for the 2012 GOP presidential nomination.

"A 39 percent favorable rating makes it that much tougher for Palin to become president should she decide to run in 2012. Her favorable rating is almost identical to the numbers that former vice president Dan Quayle got just after leaving office in 1993," says Holland.

Quayle formally declared himself a presidential candidate in 1994 but withdrew from the race in 1995.

The CNN/Opinion Research Corporation poll was conducted by telephone, with 1,136 people questioned. The survey's sampling error is plus or minus three percentage points for the overall sample and plus or minus 6.5 percentage points for the questions of Republican respondents.

Why is it astonishing to some that her ratings are dropping? What is truly surprising, is that she had such a following in the first place. Doesn't speak well for the mentality of the nation when a woman (although cute and sexy) is actually, seriously being considered to hold a high office in our country.

You state it is not clear weather the low numbers are due to her quitting her position as Governor, or something else she did. Why don't you consider another explanation for low numbers: the continuous bad press she gets from the media and the slams from Democrats? It is unimaginable that you are too naive to consider this rival hypothesis for Palin's low poll numbers.

Finally, some thinking people are polled. I really don't want to dislike the Republican party. I'm a long time Republican....but they have got to get rid of the Palins, Newts, Limbaughs, Hannitys, O'Reillys....these people scare me. We don't need the hate they spew....and most of them aren't very smart.

I'm amazed that 39% have a positive view of this woman - I mean, just how dumb are these people? I guess these are the same hysterical people showing up at the town halls demanding that "the goverment keep their hands off my Medicare" and believing Palin's crap about the government wanting to euthanize the elderly.

Most of the mainstream GOPers who supported Palin initially, did so only beacuse her position as a Governor gave her some legitamacy despite all the PR failures, attack on Dems, Attack on City dwellers, liberals, Pro-abortionists, Gay-Rights and her ignorance of World Geography/affairs and her own hypocracy about family values despite her teenage daughter being a single mom. Now that all that Bad Karma has come back to get her she took the easy way out and Quit instead of fighting them. If this is what she did in Alaska then what about National Politics ? Is she going to Quit on us at the crucial hour ? When the going gets tough, then comes time for Palin to Quit !

When the pressure is on, she resort to lies. She lied big-time about the health care bill. EIther she was totally clue less about the bill (she seems to be clue less about everything) or she just out and lied. Either way, she can not be president.

Now ... Can we send her to "The Death Panel" for a review? And I thought her son, Trig, was the one with special needs.

Don't worry folks! Palin won't run for President. She doesn't have the stomach for it and she knows it will be a DOGFIGHT. She can't handle it!

Inside her brain she knows she truly doesn't have what it takes to be Pres or VP. She will never admit this though.

But I am sure she just LOOOOVES all of the attention and all of the "please run for President" comments she gets from the whackos!

    She loves the limelight.

You heard it here first: SHE WON'T RUN FOR PRESIDENT. Thank the Lordy!

We all understand how state-controlled CNN and other media are out to destroy Palin, who is neither in office nor an official candidate for anything. They fear her great attraction to the non-liberal populace and want to pre-empt any possible threat to Obama in 2012. This is textbook Obama Protection and Propoganda 101.

I think the more interestinng story is how the President's polls are plummeting and the level of outright rejection of his socialistic policies, such as Obamacare. Stop obsessing on Palin and start reporting the current, relevant news!

I never thought very much of Sarah Palin but often times found her lack of knowledge amusing. I remember laughing to my self when she claimed that one reason she was going to resign was because she did not want to be a Lame Duck. I thought to myself that if that was the case then every politician would serve on a portion of a term and then resign if he or she didn't want to be a Lame Duck but wouldn't that make them a Lame Duck if they knew that at election time. That being the case then they should resign as soon a they take office. I just think she is so funny with her humor. She is a good comedian.

Please, stop reporting on Sarah. Who cares about Palin? She has consistently identified and proven herself as a nut job. She quit her job because she is no quitter. How does that make sense? Now she is fueling the misinformation fire started by the republican party of No. Oxi Rush and Sarah should hook up and be the nut job couple of the century. Please get this nobody off the reporting cycle. There is lots important infomation and facts that need to be reported. Without hesitation I can assure you nothing, I repeat, NOTHING Sarah has to say is factual, based on fact, or important.

Palin should have never pointed out that President Obama's "Independent Medicare Advisory Council” will, if enacted, reduce and eventually eliminate care for many elderly and disabled people.

Spin doctors everywhere gleefully pretended she was talking about something else and she was unfairly vilified for telling the truth.

But you can forget Palin, she's just being used. The real "evil" is President Obama's proposed "Independent Medicare Advisory Council.”

You can read about it on the White House's own website...

Seems Ms. Palin actually made a good point about the news media a while back:
"Quayle formally declared himself a presidential candidate in 1994 but withdrew from the race in 1995."
Complete fiction. He didn't run for president until early 1999 and dropped out after the Iowa straw poll late summer. The writer apparently knew he ran for president, but completely made up the timescale.
Real good journalism, folks. And we wonder why the public continues to become increasingly misinformed.

Sarah Palin may be an intellectual leper but she does have one ace in her deck.

Her approach isn't the stuff of legends...she merely preys upon the bigotry, the simple-mindedness, the hatred, and the fear of those who don't see the need to ever travel within 10 miles of their place of birth.

Wrap that package up with a (at present time but not forever) pretty face, folksy slack jaw redneck jargon and $150,000.00 worth of Victoria's Secret undies and this is why she is still around.

Have respect for the Lady fools. She's got more balls to stand up and try to make a difference then any of you yahoo's that criticize her. I don't see you taking a stand to make a difference. I only see these immature comments which shows you are TOTALLY clueless at how the process works! It's people like YOU that voted these boneheads into office and the reason why our country is the way it is today! HA, at least your suffering with me. Idiots! Plus, she's got great legs.
