CNN Poll: Favorable view of Palin dipping

The favorability of former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin is down in a new CNN poll out Wednesday.
The favorability of former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin is down in a new CNN poll out Wednesday.

WASHINGTON (CNN) – Americans appear to be souring on Sarah Palin, according to a new national poll.

Thirty-nine percent of people questioned in a CNN/Opinion Research Corporation survey released Wednesday have a favorable opinion of the former Alaska governor and last year's Republican vice presidential nominee. That's down seven points from a poll conducted in May, and it's also nine points lower than the 48 percent who now say they now view Palin unfavorably. Forty-three percent viewed Palin negatively in May.

"Most of that change has come among Republicans and conservatives," says CNN Polling Director Keating Holland. "GOP voters still like Palin - two-thirds continue to have a favorable view of her - but she is not as wildly popular among GOPers as she was in the spring, when eight in ten Republicans had a favorable view of her."

It's unclear if the drop in Palin's rating is due to her resignation as Alaska governor, a year and a half before her first term ends, or if anything else she has done is contributing to the dip in her numbers. The poll was conducted July 31 through August 3, before national coverage of Palin's stinging criticism of President Barack Obama's health care reform proposals.

Palin is considered one a number of Republicans who may want to make a bid for the 2012 GOP presidential nomination.

"A 39 percent favorable rating makes it that much tougher for Palin to become president should she decide to run in 2012. Her favorable rating is almost identical to the numbers that former vice president Dan Quayle got just after leaving office in 1993," says Holland.

Quayle formally declared himself a presidential candidate in 1994 but withdrew from the race in 1995.

The CNN/Opinion Research Corporation poll was conducted by telephone, with 1,136 people questioned. The survey's sampling error is plus or minus three percentage points for the overall sample and plus or minus 6.5 percentage points for the questions of Republican respondents.

Why does CNN keep track of this woman? She became politically extinct the moment she opened her mouth at the Republican National Convention. Anyone with two firing synapses can see she's proven herself to be very adept at talking out of both sides of her mouth. And even then she has nothing of value or consequence to say! And this is coming from a guy living in a RED STATE!!

C'mon CNN... drop your coverage of this moronic hack like she were a hot rock!

Why is CNN continually focused on these weekly Popularity Contest Polls? The reporting has almost become a political version of Entertainment Tonight. Palin's popularity is down, Obama's popularity is down. Who cares?

Poll the American public on issues that matter such as health care, spending, Afghanistan, economic recovery plans, etc. and stop wasting time on whether or not the cool kids in the lunch room still like Sarah or Barry.

Anything else she has done.......HOW ABOUT EVERYTHING SHE HAS DONE, SAID, DEATH SQUADS ETC ETC ETC...........This woman is as dumb as a post. She says "Keep my family out of it" unless of course I bring them into the conversation to suit me............

How can this many people still think she has ANYTHING to offer........

CNN it is ASSUMED that you delight in TRASHING Sarah Palin since you ONLY print about 2-3 positive ebay comments to 100's of negative moron type comments degrading the woman who speaks the truth for the average ( non Leftist ) American. WHO's POLL numbers are dropping? Last time I looked Mr. O's are "Taking a Steep Dive!"

  10. Someone who is at least attempting to educate herself on the issues

Sarah Palin's popularity has always completely befuddled me. She doesn't appear to be very intelligent; she appeals to people's basest instincts, stirring up fear and racism every time she spreads her lies; and now she has abandoned her oath as governor. She maligns the press while she continues to force herself in our faces with her ridiculous claims. I worry for our society and what will be left for my daughter. All civility has disappeared, as most recently evidenced by these town meetings that are being held re health care. People just shout out their feelings, usually based on misinformation, with no regard to anyone else. Sarah Palin, Rush Limbaugh and their cohorts have done more to damage this nation than anyone could have ever predicted.

First of all it is amazing that she has any supporters at all! After thinking that over some I began to realize it takes all kinds to make the world go around.Obviously there are many weak minded easily duped supporters to balance out the chart. With that thought coming to mind it is very scary to think there are actually poeple in this country so easily lead. Now I understand how these terrorists groups are able to recruit supporters!
Knowing the weak mentality of her supporters helps me understand how she gets the attention she does.
With that said I believe the media needs to do an evaluation of the wasred attention they give her?Move on to important issues that our people of america are struggling with today!

Her "death panel" rant the other day did her no favors. Even those that supported her are staring to realize who she really is after that debacle.

INTERESTING to note that, for as much as she blame the media for everything, THEY are the one thing keeping her alive on the public stage. Does she and her mindless followers even realize this?

  14. Dear Really

The left does not like her.....Um....the right isn't overly fond of her either. The sad part is they've got nothing better to offer or rest their hopes on. They should try selling t-shirts: "I went to the GOP and all I got was this lousy candidate".

It never ceases to amaze me, with all the well-educated, worldly, thoughtful conservative women in the Republican Party, why the party would spend any time on this ditz. She has done nothing but spread hate, divisivness, lies, and distortions, all while abusing her own power as Governor of Alaska. If she weren't cute and photogenic no one would be paying any attention to her. Is this what the Republican Party has come down to? I forsee very, very dark times for this party if they don't get their act together soon. Most Americans find them and their hand-puppet, Sarah Palin, disgusting.

Being a quitter certainly doesn't help, but every time the dimwit opens her mouth it reinforces the fact that she doesn't have the intellectual capacity or the political saavy to be a national leader.

Wow ,it's amazing that this country is called the United States(OXYMORON). As a black-canadian, i'm often amazed how you Americans often vilify, degrade and just plain hate each other...Left and Right. How do you expect the rest of the world to respect you when you don't have respect for each other. I thought the civil war was over.

She's a loon. And who really believe that any political party or group of people are 'afraid' of her? Please. The only thing I would be afraid of is if she actually would have become president if McCain got in and then he couldn't make it thru his full term. Can you imagine her sitting across from Putin, and telling him how she saw him every day from her front porch?!?
