GA congressman describes hate mail, Nazi graffiti after protests

Rep. David Scott's staff found a swastika on a sign outside his district office in Georgia.
Rep. David Scott's staff found a swastika on a sign outside his district office in Georgia.

ATLANTA, Georgia (CNN) - A Georgia congressman said Wednesday he's received death threats and found Nazi graffiti outside his office in the aftermath of heated protests about health-care reform.

David Scott, a Democrat from north-central Georgia, told CNN he has received several offensive faxes and letters, including some with death threats and racial abuse.

Scott is black. His district includes part of metro-Atlanta.

In a CNN interview, the congressman showed a cartoon of Barack Obama, depicting the president as a clown with a swastika on his head, which he said he had received in the mail.

Tuesday, his staff found a swastika painted over Scott's name on a sign outside his office.

"I was just simply appalled," he said.

"This symbol represents the most heinous period in world history, indicative of man's greatest inhumanity to man, where nearly 6 million Jewish people and others were murdered purposely by Adolf Hitler," Scott said. "So when you reach that point... this is very very dangerous."

Local police and the F.B.I. are investigating.

Scott said he believes the swastika and hate mail are a result of the acrimonious health care debate.

Lawmakers holding public forums in their home districts during their August recess have been the target of some angry protests over the proposed health care overhaul. An argument Scott had with a doctor at a public meeting has been featured on both local TV and CNN.

The Georgia representative said he does not believe the vocal protests against Obama's proposed changes to the health care system are spontaneous.

"I think to a degree they're organized and orchestrated," Scott said.

"There's no question about that but they have a right to do it - that's very, very important. This is America, it's rough and tumble, that's what we're here for, but this is something else," he said.

"This is not good for America, not good for this debate, it's a distraction," the congressman said.

And he says Obama should call for an end to it.

"I think he really has to speak strongly... before somebody gets hurt at one of these things."

Another congressman, Washington state Democrat Brian Baird, has canceled public meetings after saying he's received death threats.

–CNN's T.J. Holmes in Atlanta, Georgia, contributed to this report.

The people responsible for these disgusting acts are nothing but thugs! Yesterday the President was in my state talking about health care reform, and a 6 year old girl was holding up a sign that said "Obama lies, Grandma dies"...the parent of this child should be ASHAMED!!!

Rethuglicans: STOP THE MISINFORMATION!! Be mad that your not getting your way – be mad that you cannot come up with your own plan – be mad that big money coming from the insurance industry is going to dry up once we have a solution to this health care crisis....BUT STOP BEING LIARS!!!

Ignorance is bliss...Why would somebody send a fax as if the FBI and CIA will not start investigating them? This just only shows what we already knew that alot of the opposition to Pres. Obama is not his policies b/c half of those protesting don't even know ANY policy, its about his race. Either way we must move forward in this country no need to let a small minority of racists affect everything in America. People like to say that We (blacks) play the race card all the time when in fact we are pointing out FACTS. For the record...I play cards alot and I've never seen a race card maybe somebody can inform me of what that is :)

I have no doubt these are fabricated by the Congressman himself. He blew up at the assembled crowd after the slightest reference to health care and then chastized and berated his constituents for not calling his office. Interesting that a surgeon who asked a health care question had done just that, with no response. Liberals are calling us mobs, Un American, Nazis...they are doing evrything they can to save this sinking ship.

And what is REALLY pathetic is the two companies these men earn there living from don't have a problem with these individuals making references to OUR DEMOCRACY in such a manner...SAD...SAD..SAD..We will truly never evolve as a nation as long as extremist are given LARGE platforms to disiminate FEAR and HATE.....really sad.

Congressman please don't be appalled, being a democrat from GA you should know that you are dealing with a bunch of right wingers who are actually the US version of the Taliban. Most republicans have extreme views & believe anything that is said by Rush, Hannity, Beck, Newt, & their leadership. They do not & can not have their own opinion. Most believe that democrats will not be allowed in Heaven. In most cases when we from the left have a problem we may demostrate & speak our minds but to behave like these right wingers are behaving in these town hall meetings shows they are ignorant to what the heath care plan is about & don't have a clue with what is going on ONLY what they are being told or attempt to read & understand....

I hate people who can not disagree with Obama and have to do this type of crap.
It is one thing to completely disgree with the dems but there is no place for this sort of thing

    The problem is
It is the dems way or the repubs way.
    There is not real compromise
Why can't there be a non elected panel / group that comes up with the best ideas from both parties and hand it to binding arbitration that each side must live with.
It is not good for the country if one party TELLS all Americans what is best for them. I listen to Obama and he comes accross as if he, his party and only them know what is best. The repubs come across as the same

The right-wing extremists responsible for this despicable, loathesome behavior are unamerican and unchristian in their behavior. God will judge them for what they are: despicable, immoral human beings.

It is time we got back to democratic discussion and away from this awful direction we are going in. I fear for our country and our freedoms - the scary, intimidating tactics of the RIGHT make me scared for the future of this great nation.

Sarah Palin, Newt Gingrich, Lou dobbs, Bill O'rielly, and Boener are to blame for this nonsense. They first need to get over the fact that Barack Obama is The President of The United States of America, and yes, he's a black man in charge of the country. GET OVER IT!!!! The second thing is that these people who are protesting probably have no idea what they are protesting about. It reminds me of an episode of the Beverly Hillbillies when Jethro went to college and joined a group of hippies who protested on college campuses for no reason other than to protest. CNN, please stop fueling this fire and start reporting some truth to these meetings. I am getting more and more disgusting with you guys. I am to the point of calling the cable company to see if they can just remove CNN from my channels. Report some positive, and report some truth. It may not hurt your ratings as much as you think. Duhhhhh!!

These people bringing threats to the congressmen are evil, as well as those that conseal their true intentions self-righteousness. I hope they end up in jail or worst sick and their insurance denies them coverage.

I think that the GOP needs to disown this group who represents the worst of the worst in the strongest possible terms. The sooner the better.

The republican silence on this matter speaks volumes. . .

Please. Libs had been brandishing Bush with swastikas his entire presidency, claiming free speech. Now, they are upset that it is happening to them.

Maybe libs should have acted better. I think the Bush presidency was a major failure, but the way libs treated, it appeasr turn-about is fair play.

Next time, treat your opponent with respect, and the people you support should receive the same. If the libs had treated Bush better, then I would be the first in line condeming these actions. Sadly, that is not the case.

    THIS IS SICK, SICK,SICK!!!!
People doing this and putting their children into these town hall meetings is a disgrace. Letting your child hold up a sign saying
OBAMA LIES GRANDMA DIES is immoral. You are teaching your children to lie and in the national spotlight yet. How low can you get.
To many times we use our innocent children for such things.
    It should be child abuse.
Everyone needs to step back and take a breath and find out the real truth. They need to stop acting like children, the children they have stuck out there don't act like they do. So many people need drama in their lives daily anymore so much so they cannot seperate fact from fiction. Hope they have watched themselves on TV so they can see what and idiot looks like. They poor children we will use our children to gain anything that pleases us!!!
