From

WASHINGTON (CNN) - Longtime Democratic strategist Paul Begala hammered former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin on Friday - calling her "flaky and an intellectual lightweight."

Begala was asked on CNN's "The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer" to respond to a Politico story in which former House Speaker Newt Gingrich outlined several ways for Palin to repair her image.

Although Begala called Gingrich "a brilliant political strategist," he said giving advice to Palin is an exercise in futility.

"Here's the problem," said Begala, a CNN contributor. "He is trying to treat her like a serious person. She is not. OK? She is about half a whack job. She does not have the intellectual heft of Newt Gingrich or almost anyone else in the Republican Party, and I think she has proved that."

He continued: "I admire Newt Gingrich for pretending that she is a serious person. But Sarah Palin has proven herself to be flaky and an intellectual lightweight."

Conservative journalist Terry Jeffrey, appearing alongside Begala, defended Palin for having "rock solid principles." But he said Palin needs to be more aggressive in opposing the president's policies. At this point, Jeffrey said, "I think it's not proven" she can go toe-to-toe with President Obama.

CNN – Why are you promoting this "person without portfolio"? She's not a national player, and the only reason she's in the news is because you put her there. How about a little responsible journalism? Thanks.

YJ   August 14th, 2009 11:21 pm ET

I wonder if Sarah Palin will understand what Paul Begala meant!
She is so dumb as the soles of my shoes!!!!!!!!!!

Fan of Common Sense   August 14th, 2009 11:21 pm ET

Yeah CNN, thanks for informing us what YOUR EMPLOYEE thinks about Sarah. Why don't you find us some REAL NEWS instead of just promoting idiotic statements by your no-name pundits who have never done anything real in their entire lives?

Finally, someone with balls calling that queen has not clothes after all.
Bravo!!!

REA   August 14th, 2009 11:20 pm ET

and what kind of people will read a book this wacko write really make you wonder.

Joe Berson   August 14th, 2009 11:20 pm ET

The Alaska moose killer scares me–took her attending 4-5 colleges to finally get a degree in journalism. How come she wasn't considered for a Rhodes Scholarship??

Kathy   August 14th, 2009 11:19 pm ET

Paul Begala is right. I don't know and can't begin to understand where Sarah Palin comes from or how she thinks she is qualified to be a serious politition especially since she left her current elected post. We could never in a million years take the chance of having her as our president or we would be in big trouble and how embarrassing and scary would that be to have her as our first in command. When the going would get tough 2 days into her presidency, she would quit or go on Saturday Night Live. Her cutesy little rants don't impress us as a matter of fact the less we see of her the better. There are definately some smart female contenders that could become effective presidents but Sarah should just work on her acting career or be a soccer mom and preach abstinance to her kids.

romie   August 14th, 2009 11:19 pm ET

Mr. Begala is right. Sarah Palin is a whack job and more. One can clearly see that she is not intellent enough to be a top politican. She should stay home and look out for the Russians.

dhydar   August 14th, 2009 11:18 pm ET

It's disturbing that Begala would use such odd masturbatory terminology while discussing a public figure... even if she is an attractive female. I hope his Mom doesn't see that clip.

Tyler   August 14th, 2009 11:17 pm ET

I'm sorry–Mr. Jeffrey, I'm not sure where you're coming from. How can you say that Palin, of all people, has to debate Obama in a stronger manner?
She has resigned her job and given up any soapbox she might have had. She is now nothing more than another American citizen, and while the viewpoints of this country's citizens are important, I can assure you I speak for many when I say her's are NOT. I applaud Begala for saying what most of the rest of the country was thinking. However, I think calling her an "intellectual lightweight" is actually giving her a leg up. I know the media loves covering the stupid things Palin says, but come on folks-let's put a muzzle on her already.

Dave in Massachusetts   August 14th, 2009 11:16 pm ET

Though Begala's comments are probaly not politically correct, they are very true. I do believe that Sara Palin has strong principles. A lot of people do. But that does not mean they are qualified to hold a high political office. If the Republicans insist on putting this woman forward as a serious candidate for national office, they will get slaughtered.

People need to find their niche in life. Palin could have a very successful career making speeches and supporting other stonger candidates that hold her same beliefs. She could really make a difference here as long as she does not try to be the one that carries the Republican baner.

Emery   August 14th, 2009 11:15 pm ET

First I would like to ask Terry Jeffrey, what are MS. Palin's rock solid principles, I was unaware she had any.

Secondly, Paul Begala, she is not half a wack job, she is completely a wack job. I am STILL curious about the church she attends and the tounges they speak in. If I have someone in Washington at 1600 Pensylvania Avenue representing me and the rest of the country I want to understand them, not have them babble in tongues as MS. Palin seems to do quite frequently, even when not attending church.

joe m   August 14th, 2009 11:15 pm ET

guess it takes one to know one.

marjorie   August 14th, 2009 11:11 pm ET

thank you paul begala for saying what so many people believe; sarah palin has a double-digit i.q., if that, and it's about time this was pointed out in no uncertain terms and not politely hinted at; thanks again

George   August 14th, 2009 11:10 pm ET

She also once plagiarized one of Michael Regan's speeches. I thought as governor of a country with such a low rate of college attendance she would promote some semblance of intelligence.

TexasAnnie *-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*   August 14th, 2009 11:09 pm ET

And what "rock solid principles" would Mr. Jeffrey be referring to– her attempt to sneakily exert her powers while gov. to get her ex bro-in-law fired– her charging her children's flights & expenses to the state (until she got caught)– her inability to manage her own household, let alone the state– just what principles again, Mr. Jeffrey?? The woman couldn't stand with the dimmest politicos. I just wish she would fade away. She's an embarrassment to women who actually have a brain & the fortitude to make it in the business world.

lou   August 14th, 2009 11:09 pm ET

Considering the Donkeycrats have an "Intellectual Giant" in the White House and all he can do is sink the USA in Red Ink while turning us into a Chavez-like Socialist Party has-been, I'm wondering how much validity Begala's opinion carries anyway.

I'm no Palin fan, but who is he to call the Kettle black?

Cyrus Shick in Nashville, TN   August 14th, 2009 11:08 pm ET

Thanks, Paul!

George   August 14th, 2009 11:07 pm ET

Thank god someone said it point blank. She's an uneducated, mediocre-brained, half-witted, dangerous nut-job of a loon. I don't care that she's conservative, or even ultra-conservative. My concern is that she's so evidently stupid that she speaks in public without a modicum of intelligent facts-based understandings on any issue. At least McCain, Cheney, and even Bush could address facts. She's the exact stereotype of a woman running for president – irrational, hyper-emotional, moody, stupid, and trigger-happy when PMS'ing. Why doesn't the Republican Party showcase some of their strong female contenders?

And "toe-to-toe with President Obama"? On what planet? She never makes any sense when she speaks. Read her resignation speech on the Alaska governor website. Talk about crazy and insane. Why all the capitals and punctuation marks? Even third grade students can write persuasive speeches that make more sense.

Advocate for All People with Down Syndrome   August 14th, 2009 11:07 pm ET

Why not interview Palin and ask her which health care plan will provide coverage and care for her infant son? That would be Medicare and Medicaid, for children and adults with disabilities. Both of these are GOVERNMENT run health care. Wonder if Palin even understands that.

Leah Texas   August 14th, 2009 11:07 pm ET

Half? In my opinion she is a FULL whack job.

Susan, California   August 14th, 2009 11:07 pm ET

She couldn't go toe-to-toe with Mickey Mouse.

denise_denise   August 14th, 2009 11:07 pm ET

Its all true. She is a light weight and should be an embarrassment to the republican party in addition to being dim and inarticulate.

I am amazed by the number of people that follow her.

Wes   August 14th, 2009 11:05 pm ET

Thank you Lord! I thought I was the only one who realized It.

Doug   August 14th, 2009 11:04 pm ET

This Begala is just always whining. What are his credentials, that he worked with Carvill in the Clinton Whitehouse – 2 blowhards. But the bottom line my friends, is that all the guys who are out their blasting Palin are the guys with little dicks that could never get a Palin – look at the hags that Clinton and Carvill are stuck with – i could only imagine what Mrs. Begala looks like – that is the bottom line. It is the little dick syndrome that runs rampant in Washington, more along the liberal side, but basically along both sides. Guys with little dicks are intimidated by a sucessful woman.

wazrocker   August 14th, 2009 11:04 pm ET

'It's not proven that Sarah Palin can go toe to toe with President Obama!?" Ha ha! It's not proven that Sarah Palin Could go toe to toe with Spongebob Squarepants! She is NOT the sharpest knife in the drawer.
She's to be given credit for being a great self promoter but short of that, she hasn't much to offer

John   August 14th, 2009 11:03 pm ET

Quit acknowledging her. The more you bring her into the limelight the worse it is.

GP   August 14th, 2009 11:02 pm ET

Palin needs to be 'more aggressive in opposing the presidents policies"?

Huh? You mean making stuff up about death panels isn't aggressive? Or is it that lies don't count?

Larry Willet   August 14th, 2009 11:02 pm ET

Paul Begala calling Sarah Palin an "intellectual lightweight" is the pot calling the kettle black. The only traits that have gotten Paul to where he is today are his ascerbic wit and partisan cynicism, certainly not his intellect. I challenge him to cite anything he has done or said that contains any recognized intellectual content including his books. I generally chuckle when I read his so-called "editorials" since they are devoid of any serious insights and loaded with hollow partisan banter. I entertained the thought of comparing him to other "intellectual lightweights" in the Democratic party but I don't have any reason to insult any of them.

Dennis, Amarillo Texas   August 14th, 2009 11:01 pm ET

CNN is famous for its LIne: "Your comments are awaiting moderation". But they put this little crack pot Paul Begala on everyday to insult every Repbublican in sight from both Presidents Bush to Chaney to to Gingrich to Palin with language straight from the gutter. But what really gets me is when Begala continuoulsy refers to himself as a "Texan". That is the greatest insult of all, a little pipsqueek like Begala who hides behind a camera and a microphone, and would run to his Granny's dress to hide if he ever was confronted to put muscle to his mouth.

Independent Voter   August 14th, 2009 11:01 pm ET

I so agree with Begala! If we are going to have a health care debate lets do it on facts not lies. The sad part is the individulas are falling for it... its a living well.( you can decide how you will die, not the doctors). Sarah Palin should be ashamed of her self...a few years ago she promoted the very same idea in Alaska!

Jq   August 14th, 2009 10:59 pm ET

"go toe to toe with pres Obama"...ha ha ha that is hysterical. That idiot against a harvard law grad?? Not!!

Dale, plymouth MI   August 14th, 2009 10:59 pm ET

Bagala is a whack job. Anyone that goes along with this presidents ideas is a whack job. They should be thrown is prison for trying to spread communism in the US.

That's what it's about people "Communism" not healthcare. Healthcare is just another control factor that helps the other. Thes people are trying to control all AMericans and I for one am very happy to see that all people dem's, repulicans and indenpendents are seeing it and saying NO THANKS.

Now if you push this you should be held on criminal charges. By the way, I heard that the tax payers arenow footing the bill for 600 lobbiest? THANKS A LOT --See that's waht I mean, You people are ripping us off and trying to control us.

Don't be to surprised if the people take this a little personal. After all, it's our way of life your messing with. Some elected officials to turn on their our people --WAIT TILL NEXT YEAR back stabbers.

Ken   August 14th, 2009 10:55 pm ET

Begala, YOU are the nut job. You are obviously medicated.

Stephanie   August 14th, 2009 10:51 pm ET

I don't care for Palin either, at least not politically, but I think calling her a "whack job" is unprofessional and does not reflect well on the Democrats when that type of name calling is used.

Kimberly in Oregon   August 14th, 2009 10:50 pm ET

love it~!! Its not as if everyone with half a brain is NOT thinking the same thing, I mean come on the woman is about 4 beers short of a 6 pack! COMLETE LOON!

ImaLindatoo   August 14th, 2009 10:49 pm ET

Now that's funny. Paul Begala? The man who is so desperate for attention? The man that people from his own party can't stand because...well, of him?

Yes, I'm sure Paul you want to get in on Sarah's coat tails, it just aint gonna' happen.

Wack Job, Amen!!!   August 14th, 2009 10:49 pm ET

I totally agree with you! She is a total nut. No one should pay this fool any attention. She is a fool!!!!

normajean   August 14th, 2009 10:48 pm ET

Afterall the hoop-la, stories and jokes plus the multitude of times Sarah Palin has shown herself to be lacking in the intellectual curiosity that it takes to be a politician.....there are still people who stand up for her and think she has presidential attributes. She is a personality, not unlike a lot of Hollywood people who are attractive and have a "gift of gab" in the public arena, but intellegent she is not. When challenged for a solid opinion, she is vapid. Her smart words are teleprompted and written for her. Her live interviews proved her inability to "think on her feet". Heaven help us if she is elected to anything in the future..

Bette   August 14th, 2009 10:47 pm ET

If there was any intelligent life in the Republican Party they would admit she's a lost cause. Defending her just proves there is no intelligent life in the Republican Party. She's a joke, a sick joke.

Margaret   August 14th, 2009 10:47 pm ET

This light weight is scaring the Democratic Party to death because of the size of the crowds she draws and the support she enjoys.

Half a whack job is preferable to a party of Socialists and Marxists.

See you at the next election, Mr. Begala.

You betcha!   August 14th, 2009 10:47 pm ET

Begala is right on. Gingrich is a fine stratgist, and Sarah Palin is a cartoon character who doesn't realize it.

You can put lipstick on a quitbull, but it's still gonna be an dumb little mutt with a bad disposition – and lipstick.

Buddy Gilmour   August 14th, 2009 10:45 pm ET

Of course she's crazy, that's why we love her so much! Gingrich plays up to her in the hope of getting her support and the support of the GOP religious-fundamentalist (and also crazy) base. Because you see Gingrich is not crazy, just opportunistic.

Anonymous   August 14th, 2009 10:44 pm ET

...calling her "flaky and an intellectual lightweight."

Attention Mr Begala: That's a lying flaky and intellectual lightweight..

Diane   August 14th, 2009 10:41 pm ET

It is too late for Palin to create a new image, she has made so many incredible statements that no one can ever believe she is serious. Wonder if she quit because she had a better offer to try to sink the health care reform legislation? If so, it seems to have backfired.

Sandra, Atlanta   August 14th, 2009 10:41 pm ET

She couldn't go toe-to-toe with me and I'm not a politician. Of course I don't wink and say 'you betcha' very well either.

Ted   August 14th, 2009 10:40 pm ET

I'm disgusted by Begala's statement. How dare he refer to the former governor as "half a whack job"!

Clearly, Palin is a full-on, complete whack job!

The fact that somehow she's got half this country believing in "death panels" is downright scary, though.

But I will say its nice to know I'm so much smarter than so many people in this country, from the embarrassing former governor of Alaska on down to her fruitcake supporters. =)

marty   August 14th, 2009 10:39 pm ET

Begala always has been and always will be a jerk. Who cares what he thinks? Wait, you mean he can think??

Alex, NJ   August 14th, 2009 10:39 pm ET

Of course she is a wack job! Just remember you can see Russia from Alaska!

mitch   August 14th, 2009 10:38 pm ET

Sarah Palin is an intellectual lightweight – and in other news, the earth is round and revolves around the sun.

Don Beal   August 14th, 2009 10:38 pm ET

Begala is right. Gingrich advised Palin to write a book, but the what? 140 characters in a tweet, that's plenty for Sarah.

Sam   August 14th, 2009 10:37 pm ET

Palin is not only lacking intellectually, she's a stranger to the truth – lies with such ease and regularity to be accused of having moral fiber.

Craig   August 14th, 2009 10:37 pm ET

Begala was right. She is a whack job. She is flaky. And she is an intellectual lightweight.

Jeffrey was right as well – she's got rock solid principles. The problem is she couldn't find her backside with both hands, a bloodhound, and a set of directions. I'm surprised she learned how to tie her shoes.

phillydan   August 14th, 2009 10:35 pm ET

Begala calling it like he sees it. And the best part is that he is so right.
Anyone who thinks Sarah Palin has the qualifications to be President, let alone run for President needs to look in the mirror and say: "Hello Stupid!".

windfall   August 14th, 2009 10:35 pm ET

she's a cartoon character and the sooner the GOP admits that, the sooner they can start rebuilding their collapsed party.

Bev   August 14th, 2009 10:35 pm ET

Rock solid principles? What? Use your kids to your political advantage? Call individuals names and then become upset when the tables are turned? Just straight out lie? Quit? Yep. Great rock solid principles.

Dave   August 14th, 2009 10:35 pm ET

Right on man!

Laughing independent   August 14th, 2009 10:34 pm ET

We don't need an expert to point that out she's nuts, the American people are figuring that out, although confirmation is helpful.

He's right. She's a lyin' kook!

Lookout! It's a Death Panel!   August 14th, 2009 10:31 pm ET

"I think it's not proven she can go toe-to-toe with President Obama"??? Are you kidding me? She can't even go toe-to-toe with good ol' W! Can anyone seriously think Palin should be in any leadership capacity in this country?? This "aw-shucks", "you-betcha", supposedly-down-home act is stale and old and I can't believe anyone is fooled by this stupidity any more. I don't want a President I can "have a beer with" or "shoot a moose with". We are talking about the leader of the free world, not head of the local "order of the water buffaloes" people! Kudos to Paul Begala for telling it like it is!

Alan   August 14th, 2009 10:31 pm ET

My, isn't that commonly known as the kettle calling the pot black.

Fractured   August 14th, 2009 10:30 pm ET

Paul, the more you liberals vilify Sarah Palin, the more I support her. She could bludgeon baby seals with a hammer and wear polar bear skin hats for all I care, she's far more qualified than Obama and your hatred of her simply validates her importance.

She is far less than that in my mind

Greg in Houston   August 14th, 2009 10:28 pm ET

I think Paul Begala is right on the money about her. More aptly I would term her "lunatic fringe" with emphasis on lunatic. Caribou Barbie is about as intellectual as a say Barney the Dinosaur, no disrespect for fuzzy purple dinosaurs intended.

Jelo33   August 14th, 2009 10:28 pm ET

Mike O   August 14th, 2009 10:25 pm ET

An 'intellectual lightweight' who just managed to publicize the so-called 'death panels' (which a number of hardened liberals also admitted substantial concern about) to a point where it's been stripped from the bill. And what have you accomplished lately, Paul? I guess hyperbole is only acceptable from the Left.

Donkey Party   August 14th, 2009 10:22 pm ET

I disagree with Mr. Begala. Sarah Palin is a FULL whack-job! Why do the lunatic fringe righties love this nitwit so much? I hope she chokes on tainted moose meat. One last thing (for our troops) Sarah, how about ya quit makin' things up?

Jay   August 14th, 2009 10:22 pm ET

How true…republicans want Palin more on TV-Question what newspaper do you read—UHHH I don’t know I don’t read.. Pathetic… There should be a level of education one needs to acquire in order to be considered to run for president. Palin is far from that level- she is a joke.

Kathleen   August 14th, 2009 10:22 pm ET

He's right...Palin IS a wack job and most of us have thought so ever since her first interview with Katie Curic. She'll never get elected to any top office. She should give it up and go find an admin job. That's all she's qualified to do.

Jeff, Huntington Beach, CA   August 14th, 2009 10:19 pm ET

Palin is a manipulative wack job... there lies the problem. She will manage to take many over the cliff with her with her phony wink and smile.

I wonder what God has told her today?

CO   August 14th, 2009 10:18 pm ET

Palin's trying hard to put herself on par with the President and to undermine him as much as possible. Yet, she never shared any of her enlightening opinion pieces before the campaign. She's become so full of herself after a dose of limelight and fame.

MBSeattle   August 14th, 2009 10:17 pm ET

Sarah Palin is and will be irrelevant to the Heath Care debate until she knows the facts. She speaks with no authority or responsibility for what comes out of her mouth, kind of like Rush Limbaugh.

Any idiot can give you a red meat meat speech. The American people badly need facts.

WHY ARE WE STILL TALKING ABOUT SARAH PALIN?!?!?!

continuing to bring up Sarah Palin is absurd and a complete waste of time. we have much bigger issues to concern ourselves with instead of continuing to mention an irrelavant non-contender.

Palin is an idiot. Shes also insane. She also would be someone who would abuse her power if she was President. Say what you want about Obama but I cannot picture him using the FBI or CIA like the KGB, GRU or Gestapo which is exactly what I can see from her

Anonymous   August 14th, 2009 10:11 pm ET

"....about a half a whack job?" No way! There's nothing "half" about it. Palin is a full fledged whack job!

Ken   August 14th, 2009 10:11 pm ET

The only "whack job" is Begala; his hyperpartisanship should disgust anyone who believes their should be some semblance of civility in politics. His specialty always has been engaging in ad hominem attacks, a tactic which betrays where the true lack of ideas lies, in the far left wing of the Democratic Party, the place Begala calls home. When you're incapable of serious thought, go on the offensive and belittle your opponent, regardless of how much superior to you they may be in character. And I think we all know how a contest of character between Sarah Palin and Paul Begala would end. Sorry, Paul, you lose.

Mitch   August 14th, 2009 10:08 pm ET

It's about time a pundit said what millions of Americans have been saying for months. Palin is the intellectual equivalent of a bag of nails.

I would LOVE to see Sarah Palin and President Obama go "toe to toe" and discuss the health reform issues....

Let's see the stuff that Sarah is made of and whether or not any of her rhetoric holds up.

Begala is simply stating the obvious, I actually think he's being charitable by calling her just half a whack job. She clearly qualifies as a full whack job.

RayRay   August 14th, 2009 10:06 pm ET

She is a lightweight but by the same token Obama is a great orator and a lousy leader. All this intellectual grandstanding by liberals is curious since some of the challenged leaders in Congress are Democrats.

gl, Pittsburgh   August 14th, 2009 10:06 pm ET

No Sara Palin needs to stop lying.

Dianne   August 14th, 2009 10:05 pm ET

Paul,

Look at your own self. You aren't that bright yourself...

Frank   August 14th, 2009 10:05 pm ET

I usually agree with Paul Begala, but this time I don't. Sarah Palin isn't half a whack job, she's a full blown wacko. Why the Republicans continue to give her credence is beyond me. C'mon people. The election is over. You don't have to pretend she has any brains anymore. Call a spade a spade, er... call a wacko a wacko!

RR   August 14th, 2009 10:04 pm ET

who is Begala?

No fan of Palin   August 14th, 2009 10:04 pm ET

Begala ought to know a whack job when he sees one, he's been associated with liberal loonies for years now. Same tired democratic strategy from CNN, attempting to paint Palin and Limbaugh as the face the Republican Party. The truth is that a whole bunch of the people attending town halls across the country distrust this Congress and this President.. Deal with it..

Darrell LaMere   August 14th, 2009 10:03 pm ET

Begala's candor is a little brutal but right on target. Palin better just milk it for all the self-aggrandizement she can .She is not presidential material period. McCain has created a monster whose only weapon is arrogance.

Darrell LaMere

Leslie   August 14th, 2009 10:02 pm ET

What Paul Begala says is true - she is a lightweight for sure and probably on her way to "whack job" as the star treatment she gets while having no substance goes to her head. And it is dangerous when the media gives her the same "voice" or treatment as serious politicians - liberal or conservative - because this suggests to people that maybe her intellectually dull, limited and facile views should be given some creedence.

Mattison   August 14th, 2009 10:01 pm ET

Paul has made an entire career of being as much a jerk as possible towards any who share different views than him. Thankfully John Klein at CNN saw the light and cancelled his show. Oops Paul. Guess your still just a partisan hack. Theres a way to be critical and childish name-calling, while clearly right on your level, isnt what a journalist should do. But then again, your a strategist, not a journalist.

sue   August 14th, 2009 10:01 pm ET

I really don't understand why anybody cares what the whack job has to say. Who is she anyway? An unemployed private citizen who recently left a job uncompleted because she couldn't take the heat! Again ...who cares?!

Tim   August 14th, 2009 10:00 pm ET

I am really sick of conservatives standing up for Sarah Palin's principals. They're essentially the same as every other American's principals. Her principals don't set her apart. Her lack of intelligence, however, does.

Nikki Oldaker   August 14th, 2009 9:59 pm ET

Begala you have a lot nerve and are a sexist... Has to make one wonder if your elitest attitude needs a remake. Palin – strange as you may find her is loved by many in the country. The reason being is she is not a liar and she cares about this country. Hmmm...how refreshing that would be to put someone in office that isn't corrupted by business as usual. She talks to the people not at them.

Tammy   August 14th, 2009 9:58 pm ET

The mystery is that she got elected to any office at all. Did people really understand her "thought processes"? Watching her is more painful fun than listening to Shrub, but intellectually, they're in the same league - each is a bit different, but lacking grey matter. Wouldn't it be fun to watch/listen to a debate between the two? Ouch!

Gpenn   August 14th, 2009 9:57 pm ET

Palin has shown once again she has no clue how are government works. She thanked The Senate for removing the "death panels from HR 3200 on Facebook today. The problem with that is HR3200 is a House bill not a Senate bill. Palin fails again.

Turnabout is Fair Play   August 14th, 2009 9:57 pm ET

Tell it on the mountain Paul! You're preaching to the choir when it comes to Ms. Intelligence Lite!

Biased   August 14th, 2009 9:55 pm ET

I used to love listening to Paul Begala, but now as far as I am concerned, Paul is nothing but a condescending, mean spirited and nasty personality now whenever he talks about republicans and this has been going on since Obama got the nomination. Some times on CNN he is rude to the point I turn CNN off – sorry CNN but it is getting annoying listening to him now especially when I used to look forward to listening to him when he was announced as one of your guests.

Aunt Bea and Opie   August 14th, 2009 9:54 pm ET

We think Joe the hammer might just be a bit smarter than her,but thats a sled dog race,if you know what we mean.hahaha

George Coolidge   August 14th, 2009 9:54 pm ET

"At this point, Jeffrey said, "I think it's not proven" she can go toe-to-toe with President Obama."
...
According to Senator Grassley, the "end-of-life counseling" has become DOA as far as the Senate is concerned. Palin influenced the health care debate more than anyone else this week.
...
Well, at least more than Begala ever did.

sunshine   August 14th, 2009 9:54 pm ET

Begala is 100% right.

jon   August 14th, 2009 9:53 pm ET

Asking Paul Begala about Sarah Palin is like asking Ann Coulter her opinion of President Obama. The question is why would you? Begala's only function is to collect a pay check by sitrring up controversy. I'm sure he's not a bad person but truly, no one takes him seriously. He's like a more unstable version of James Carville, if that's possible. He is a sad caricature.

alex   August 14th, 2009 9:52 pm ET

She has proved to be America's #1 idiot.

S Callahan   August 14th, 2009 9:51 pm ET

That's mean..but I have to admit..I have tears in my eyes from laughter...lol lol lol lol

Rick   August 14th, 2009 9:51 pm ET

Mr. Begala:
YOU and your whole party are scare to death of Ms. Palin. She has aspired to more than you will ever dream about. So, who's really the intellectual 'whack job'?

Mark Lins   August 14th, 2009 9:51 pm ET

Begala is right! Now would CNN please stop treating Sarah Palin as if she has anything to say, except as it pertains to hunting and fishing??? Please????

chubby   August 14th, 2009 9:51 pm ET

What a bone head of an article. If you are seriously curious to look it up, there were death panels in the health care bill of the demorats. It was located on pages 425 to 430 and has since been deleted but the original bill may still be there. First it was not there then democratic senators said it would be removed. So, WHO is really not a half whack job but a full WHACK JOB. Governor Palin's poll is rising while obummer and the democrats are falling like a stone off a cliff.

kuriya   August 14th, 2009 9:51 pm ET

Thanks for that comment whack job that is what she is. I also think that she is still upset that they lost the election. Plain and Obama are not same Obama is not a quitter Plain mistress of comedy quit her job when it became too much for her. She abandon her state

Robert   August 14th, 2009 9:50 pm ET

Well I totally disagree with him. She is not 'half' a whack job, she is 100% totally whacked...

cf   August 14th, 2009 9:50 pm ET

Palin is probably a nice enough person...

But she carries a lot of the baggage most Republicans carry these days: arrogance, condescending nature, lack of understanding the true situation in the country since they want the upper class to be all Republican and the lower class everyone else.

She is not a realist. She is not focused. She really knows little about the main continent and has little idea what the rest of the world does. Hopefully, she is not the best the Republicans have to offer although the last eight years have seen enough hate, bigotry, arrogance, ruthlessness, lying, and filthy behavior to last a lifetime.

She's saddled with a horrible party. The horrible party is sadded for oblivion if she is the best it can turn to.

Jon in VA   August 14th, 2009 9:50 pm ET

Well for someone that it seems the media claims to be unimportant, " flaky and an intellectual lightweight" according to this guy. I can't find a newspaper or news channel that doesn't have her. Why does Plain need to stand on her own, when these people give her all the wieght she needs. I wouldn't have say her 15 minutes where up when Obama became president, but boy was I wrong, She will be around for a long time because despite what these people say and the fact they should ignore her or make her unimportant. You idoits make her front page news every week. What would happen if not one media outlet mentioned her name for say 1-2 months. We will never know because idoits like this guy and the media in general can't do it.

annie   August 14th, 2009 9:49 pm ET

Finally an article about Sarah Palin I agree with!

ztormtra   August 14th, 2009 9:48 pm ET

Time to stop bad mouthing people and start debating the issues. Begala has become quite a boor. When a person attacks another verbally, without cause, it is a sign of insecurity.

Hmmmm...Democrat Insecurity?

Drew   August 14th, 2009 9:47 pm ET

You hit the nail right on the head your comment is so true:)

Patriot   August 14th, 2009 9:46 pm ET

Of course she's a whack job, and so are her supporters.

tk in IL   August 14th, 2009 9:46 pm ET

Now there's the pot calling the kettle black. Begala can do nothing short of resorting to name calling.....and yet despite all the flack flying from his lips, he's got nothing worthwhile to say.

CNN why don't you try to print news that is worthy of reading and stop with the Palin bashing? All you end up doing is putting her right up front and center of everyone's attention......unless that is your real intention????

Jean...Mississippi   August 14th, 2009 9:44 pm ET

She's NOT half a whack job.......She's the whole NUT

Anonymous   August 14th, 2009 9:43 pm ET

A sure sign that someone is losing control of the discussion is when they resort to.....and indeed, lower themselves...to name calling.

Democrats have lost this issue. They should strive to retain what little dignity they have left, and stop the name calling. It is embarassing for their party, and those who support them

Mariann Pepitone   August 14th, 2009 9:43 pm ET

I disagree with Begala. I think she can go toe to toe with Obama. She says what she means and means what she says. Obama is known to change his mind on certain decisions like Gitmo. He should already know what to do with them. There are several prisons to transfer them to If I am correct there is a prison in Montana or Utah with no prisoners in it and it has never been used. They will take them because it would give jobs to people. That prison cost over 2 million dollars to build. I seen it on TV, And Palin is right about the Health Care Obama is trying desperately to pass. And I would definately like to know why he is so anxious. I think his Health Care is a gimmick.

Legna   August 14th, 2009 9:43 pm ET

Begala,Begala,Begala, if u consider Palin half a wack job , look nto the mirror and decide what u c. I am amazed that u feel that someone so wacky deserves your esteemed intellectual comments or attention. Maybe ,you need to help the current administration focus on the economy so that all small business r not bankrupted. OR DO U CARE...

Ren from Batimore   August 14th, 2009 9:43 pm ET

Paul Begala is partly right; Newt used to be quite the strategist. He rallied the facts, truths, and troops for the Republican Miracle that so affected Clinton's time in office.

However, Newt's recent sashaying back and forth on Palin, on McCain, his kissing up with Rush....do not show that he has maintained his strategic chops. Just the opposite. He has been flaying, as have many Republicans, changing his stated positions on death panels/advance directives, and living wills.

Mr. Begala is wrong about the current Newt. He is correct , in the sad extreme, about Palin.

AA   August 14th, 2009 9:43 pm ET

Really Mr. Begala...please let them know how you feel!! (sarcasm!)

Poor Sarah Palin–>by quitting her job as governor she lost creditibilty with a lot of people. That was by far the dumbest move on her behalf. No wonder both dems and reps are saying she is a nut job.....

Strategizing is key to being a successful politician and clearly something that the former governor has not mastered. Shame on her for putting herself out there like that. This is why women like Hillary Clinton, Madeline Albright, Condi Rice, & Olympia Snowe have to work twice as hard to prove themselves. When incompetent women (ie Sarah Palin) try and pursue positions of power with no intellectual capacity, they make all of us women look bad.

Sarah Palin needs to go back to Wasilla, take care of her baby Trig, and continue to develop her skills, intellectual capabilities, etc. Aren't there online classes that she can take for that?

The man   August 14th, 2009 9:43 pm ET

Of course she's a whack job - she's running around making up crazy claims about 'death panels', a claim even CNN stated was false (although it took you about a week to finally get around to it).

flaky and an intellectual lightweight   August 14th, 2009 9:40 pm ET

But give her your money GOPers, all of it

best gift of all would be for Palin to manage as much of the money from the GOP as possible

Big John   August 14th, 2009 9:38 pm ET

I think Mr Begala was being kind...as she's a lot worse than he mentions. She's a full blown right wing whacko who is the one guilty of "making things up" Bluntly she's just plain stupid.

RFK   August 14th, 2009 9:38 pm ET

I wonder how she will translate this to an attack on one of her kids?

Garofulaar   August 14th, 2009 9:35 pm ET

Unfortunately the conservatives and creationists are anti-intellectual, so Palin's dumb-ass bigotry and lies sound fine the them. I'm thankful that overall they are a declining demographic. We just can't let them destroy the country.

Ralph A. LaPaugh   August 14th, 2009 9:34 pm ET

Paul Begala calling Sarah Palin a "flake" or a lightweight really takes the
cake! Begala has never had on original thought of his own. Everything
that spews out of his sewer of a mouth comes straight from the DNC.
Always has – Always will!!!!
I just can't wait to see the look on his ugly face when Palin wins the
election in 2012!!!!!!!!!!!

triket63   August 14th, 2009 9:32 pm ET

As a psychologist, I think saying 'whack job' too mild for Palin. The common term would be crazy as a loon!

A guy from Maine   August 14th, 2009 9:31 pm ET

Full whack. People who don't see it are half whack.

Linda B., Ga.   August 14th, 2009 9:29 pm ET

Paul, I totally agree with you.....but.... I think I would say she's a TOTAL WHACK JOB and a QUITTER.....and to think that McCain picked her as a running mate....maybe he's a bit of a WHACK JOB TOO ;-)

John in PA   August 14th, 2009 9:29 pm ET

How is this news? Begala is a hardcore Democrat.

JC   August 14th, 2009 9:29 pm ET

Paul Begala ~ I think I love you, MUAH!!!!!

FINALLY, someone in the political arena calls Palin on the stand regarding her non-sense. She didn't treat the VP debates seriously, nor does she appear to treat anything else serious.

For all that she has said and done (or not done), she has continued to show herself to be lacking in political intelligence and plain old common sense.

Post always rejected by CNN   August 14th, 2009 9:29 pm ET

If she was a little older I think we might say they modeled the "scarecrow" in the Wizard of Oz after her....

Jerry Archuleta USN Ret.   August 14th, 2009 9:28 pm ET

Why is Palin in the spotlight? Remember she is not in Polictics anymore. She should stay out of the lime light before she stick both feet in her mouth.

Wanda   August 14th, 2009 9:27 pm ET

finally someone at CNN who sees Palin for what she truly is...well said Paul !

Amanda   August 14th, 2009 9:26 pm ET

she is completely wacko, that's the problem and only in this country would someone like continue to make headlines.

AN   August 14th, 2009 9:26 pm ET

Palin is nothing but a red herring for the Republicans. By having Democrats chase the crazy-lady-in-a-pink-suit, they are able to draw the attention away from their own shenanigans.

rick   August 14th, 2009 9:26 pm ET

I just wish a smart educated republican would have the wisdom to say that.

Jo   August 14th, 2009 9:26 pm ET

Half a whack job is one of the nicest things I have heard about her. Seriously, why on earth is anyone giving her the time of day. I think my dog may be more intelligent than she is.

PUMA   August 14th, 2009 9:26 pm ET

Begala, your a wackjob

Preston   August 14th, 2009 9:25 pm ET

Begala thinks she is "about half a whack job"? Well, he's about half right.

evman   August 14th, 2009 9:24 pm ET

Everybody knows already that Palin is wasted and can't articulate her thoughts in a coherent fashion.

I don't think she could run Sesame Street.

Hotdog   August 14th, 2009 9:24 pm ET

He's absolutely correct. She does not have the debt to hold a constructive conversation on our existing political issues. That was clearly demonstrated in the interviews that she had with the media as a vice presidential candidate. I think it is pathetic for a person to put themselves on display the way she does.

Kish from Britain   August 14th, 2009 9:22 pm ET

This is news? We all know this.

George   August 14th, 2009 9:18 pm ET

Sort of a wack job is way too kind. You don't have to be a democrat to know she s bazarre. A normal republican would also know she is in the outer limits. She is a Rush Limbaugh egg, that hopefully won't hatch.

Ken   August 14th, 2009 9:18 pm ET

did he mean Biden the 5 time draft dodger with an IQ of 80?

Mariann Pepitone   August 14th, 2009 9:16 pm ET

I believe Palin knows what she is talking about but the democrats like Begala fear people will start listening to her and will continue to protest Health Care which Obama is trying so hard to push. That makes me wonder why is he pushing it. Murtha disagrees with Obama and that should tell you something is not right. I do not believe what Obama is saying about health care. To me it is a farce.

EC   August 14th, 2009 9:16 pm ET

Dennis   August 14th, 2009 9:07 pm ET

"Lightweight?" Interesting arguement coming from a Liberal who's only measure of success on political theory is the former Soviet Union. Ya–that system worked out so well! Freedom is only a serious conversation to those willing to defend it. For those who believe in kings, Progressive Democracy, additional gun control legislation, and other such folly–serious discussion only comes down to the amount of legal stealing the government can do from the public (taxes).

ib   August 14th, 2009 9:07 pm ET

Sadly, Paul Begala is a "totally full whack job!"

Palin is smarter and more qualified than Obama, and the liberals and their shills in the press are terrified of her.

BTW, Maybe what's bothering Begala, is he knows that a hot woman like Palin wouldn't look twice at a half-man liberal dweeb like him.

Libertarian   August 14th, 2009 8:49 pm ET

As long as Palin hides behind Facebook like a teenager lobbing untruths she will not be taken seriously. Why won't she come let herself be interviewed? Maybe because a Katie Couric tore her up so bad she is shudders at the thought of being asked even semi-tough questions again. A 5th grader could have answered some of those questions!! LOL!!!

Begala is about 1/2 right. She's 100% whack job. Newt Gingrich is a very intelligent guy, but his judgement is obviously lacking. He's wasting his time with Palin. Once a politician like her starts to go down in flames there's nothing to stop her decent but the big bang at the bottom. Any chance she had of running for meaningful political office has evaporated in the past weeks, mainly due to the fact that she cannot keep her mouth shut, and she just keeps reminding us how dumb she really is.

What the devil does Begala know???

JOBLESS IN IOWA   August 14th, 2009 8:33 pm ET

DEMOCRATIC WACKO"S, who waste the tax payers dollars trying to support the Obama Socialistic Republic of Non-America. And you say Palin is a wack job, OH GIVE ME A BREAK, you are the wack job

S M R   August 14th, 2009 8:33 pm ET

Sarah Palin must have Terry Jeffrey in a spell. LOL

b   August 14th, 2009 8:32 pm ET

for a strategist your a whole whack job

mjm   August 14th, 2009 8:32 pm ET

Conservative journalist Terry Jeffrey, appearing alongside Begala, defended Palin for having "rock solid principles."

CNN could have lead with this. Instead, they headline the guy who slams Palin. That's amazing. Two people compliment Palin, one person insults her, and the insult is the headline.

In the mean time, Obama is lying his ass off while he answers questions from a planted little girl at a town hall meeting.

Just Me   August 14th, 2009 8:30 pm ET

Paul is being kind. I could think of a few other words to describe her, but since she is a CNN darling, my descriptions of her will most likely end up on the Ticker cutting board. Pity.

Meg   August 14th, 2009 8:30 pm ET

Begala got it half right, she is a total wack job, not just half.

cindy ex-republican cause of people like rush   August 14th, 2009 8:28 pm ET

I agree with you Begala. The ones who defend pathetic palin, just seem to hate President Obama and even if he proved she lied over and over, the "less inteligent" would still stick by Palin. She has seemed to divide America more in the last few weeks than even during the primary when she incited so much hate and death threats. Please Palin, go away, you are like a little knat.

JOBLESS IN IOWA   August 14th, 2009 8:27 pm ET

Excuss me Paul, but have you ever took a long look at yourself in the mirror, If you did, you would see a democratic crook, that is more of a WACK JOB because you follow Obama instead of supporting the people who put you in office

60's survivor   August 14th, 2009 8:27 pm ET

I can't stop laughing. half a whack job. you sir are incorrect. she is full blown
Wack job and growing wackier and more dangerous everyday!!

Dan   August 14th, 2009 8:27 pm ET

As a Democrat, my first impression was that Begala's phrases were too harsh. Then I remembered that Dan Quayle was also called a lightweight. More important is to define "lightweight" and specify why they qualify for that term.

elana   August 14th, 2009 8:26 pm ET

Well, that most certainly is "calling the kettle black"!!! Thank you Paul!! No truer words were ever spoken!!!!

jcsjcm   August 14th, 2009 8:25 pm ET

Are you kidding me? You are completely ignorant! Her intellect is not in pleasing any politician, her mission is to serve the people fairly. Politicians that you believe to be intellectual are most likely crooks and into the stardom of their post. Who cares what the constituents want from their government as long as they talk well to the camera. You are an extremely nasty person! What have you done for your country today? Oh yeah, slammed Sarah – hope your buddies living off our money are happy with your thoughts for the day!

alvino   August 14th, 2009 8:24 pm ET

Newtie gave Sarah a 6 step plan to become president. Since he also wants that job badly, Sarah might want to be careful.

However, the drop in Sarah's popularity and her lack of truth on health care reform leads me to believe she could not even carry Alaska in a presidential election.

soulstar   August 14th, 2009 8:24 pm ET

it says a lot about our country when someone with her level of intelect is able to incite the masses with lies, half-truths, and down right nastiness. traditional compationate christian concervatism for you.

Charles Shelhamer   August 14th, 2009 8:23 pm ET

And Begala talks about hatred from the right? Please!

makesUwonder   August 14th, 2009 8:22 pm ET

Well, Mr. Begala if anyone would know what it takes to be a "whack job" that would be you.

ED FL   August 14th, 2009 8:22 pm ET

Sounds like Newt has his eye on a new target for female friendship .his record around females are pretty well establshed as he did when he dumped a couple of his wives.

Peoples Voice   August 14th, 2009 8:21 pm ET

Paul, you are wrong. She's not a half whacked job, she's all the way whacked.

S M R   August 14th, 2009 8:20 pm ET

Right on Paul.......Couldn't have said it any better myself....... As far as Sarah "going toe-to-toe with Obama".(a Harvard Scholar vs. several tries at graduating from jr.colleges for a journalists degree). I think not!

Voter   August 14th, 2009 8:20 pm ET

Begala is oh, so right!

Can't we just drop the Sarah Palin thing completely? She's dumb and boring.

The Republicans can best help themselves by simply dropping the subject. Palin's supporters are very vocal, but are very few.

Lola   August 14th, 2009 8:19 pm ET

I totally agree with Begala, but might still be giving her too much credit. She has no principles and if she starts with one you can bet it will change when the mod suits her. She doesn't have to knowledge to go after President Obama's policies. She just lies about them and pushes lies and hatred.

observer   August 14th, 2009 8:18 pm ET

Thank you Begala for being grown up and calling it as it is. You are one of the few people on TV who make sense. We need sensible people like you.

Peggy   August 14th, 2009 8:17 pm ET

"rock solid principles"??????? She's a HUGE liar. Anybody remember "pals around with terrorists"????????????

Mo   August 14th, 2009 8:16 pm ET

I absolutely agree with Mr. Begala. She rambles on like no other. I disagree with Begala on this though (calling her an intellectual lightweight) she doesn't even deserves that.

There isn't a definiton on webster's dictionary that is fit to describe her. Even Bush is a great has great intellect when you compare him to her. A stupid is as stupid does, and that is who Mrs. Palin is.

Anonymous   August 14th, 2009 8:16 pm ET

Paul Begala...your the loser.

German,Irish American   August 14th, 2009 8:16 pm ET

Begala's idea of an intelectual is this, teleprompter only please, President that he idolizes. Obama stated at a "town hall" meeting that the Government run Post Office was bankrupt, while private enterprises UPS and Fed-Ex were flourishing, and thus the people should endorse his Government controlled health-care plan. Huh? I mean c'mon, nobody is really this stupid to make this comparison are they? Also, the "death panel" comment being false, why did they take out the controversial part out of the bill if there wasn't some kind of loophole that could have led to abuse by the appointed health care panel? I mean c'mon, if this is such an outragous lie, how come, in Begala's tiny little hateful brain, the most intellectual President ever, Obama, couldn't just come out and explain how wrong this statement was, and keep the wording in the proposed bill?

Todd (not the Alaska Separtist)   August 14th, 2009 8:15 pm ET

Half-a-whack-job, or just a plain loon? Or light-weight quitter? Disturbing health care rationing has been conducted by insurance companies for years. They call it things like "denial of claims" or "pre-existing condition". Wake up wingnuts!

Greg, San Francisco, CA   August 14th, 2009 8:15 pm ET

At this point it's pretty apparent she can't go toe to toe with a sack of hammers and look smart.

Paul Begala you are the dumb one. you mad casue palin and is a threat you u and all ur left wings friends and media. you spends hours trying to destroy this powerful force. le be clear 2012 is palin power time.

mh   August 14th, 2009 8:14 pm ET

Begala is a typical liberal. When without an argument (even Begala can't defend socialism) just call those that don't agree with you names and defame them in some way. You Begala are the one who comes away looking like "half a whack job"!!!

Vic   August 14th, 2009 8:14 pm ET

Leave to republicans to defend the "Baked Alaskan", as long as she opposes anything President Obama says or proposes she the darling of the GOP. Palin is a intellectual pea, her best role is in the kitchen, barefoot and pregnant.

Lee   August 14th, 2009 8:11 pm ET

You mean like rock solid QUITTER?

Mike   August 14th, 2009 8:09 pm ET

Begala has been irrelevant for quite a while. He is the only one who considers himself a heavyweight intellectual. If Palin is such a far-right flaked-out wacko drifting in the political wilderness, why do all the heavy thinking intellectuals like Begala feel the need to respond to her every comment? Perhaps it's because they can't put a positive spin on anything their own party is doing (at least not with a straight face like Olbermann) so they try to deflect attention by exaggerating Palin's importance.

Nothing 'Stand Up' about Sen. John Ensign (R-NV)   August 14th, 2009 8:09 pm ET

Alas, Begala is all too correct. "Death Panel" Palin did Alaskans a huge favor by resigning. The only question I am asking myself is why Begala is wasting his time commenting on a former governor who's in the process of turning herself into a tabloid sideshow.

TangledThorns   August 14th, 2009 8:08 pm ET

Sarah Palin is very influential and Paul Begala's knows it. Her recent Facebook postings helped in removing the 'End Of Life' language by the Senate. No other person has that kind of power. That is why she'll easily take the White House in 2012.

Save America   August 14th, 2009 8:08 pm ET

IS IT 2012 YET ??   August 14th, 2009 8:07 pm ET

Another example of Democrat rudeness and meanness. Anyone who witnessed the vicious, prosecutorial "interview" of the Texas Congressman by Lawrence O'Donnell on Hardball August 14, saw for themselves how unhinged these Democrats can be. Amazing, and scary.

Tracy Thompson   August 14th, 2009 8:06 pm ET

I couldn't have said it better. Now what does that say about all the unintelligent quacks who are following and supporting her?

Jake   August 14th, 2009 8:05 pm ET

This guy is an obnoxious loud-mouthed ass, always has been and nothing more; I think I've seen blimps with less air in them then he has between his ears. Why all the focus on Palin? Could it be that you fear what will happen to the female vote when she is elected into the presidency? Me thinks thou critisizes too much.

Lourdes   August 14th, 2009 8:03 pm ET

Look who's talking! Has this guy looked in the mirror lately?
Palin will take on the liberals head on, including President Obama.

Daivie   August 14th, 2009 8:03 pm ET

Most serious republican politicians know that Palin is a moron and a liability to the party. However, they just can not summon up the nerve to be honest about her for fear of being attacked by Limbaugh and Hannity.

jayel   August 14th, 2009 8:03 pm ET

We just might see a toe to toe meet between Palin and Obama for the 2012. Wouldn't just be one hell of a debate? We may even be able to figure out who really should lead this great nation of ours. Can't wait for them to get it on.

Nini   August 14th, 2009 8:02 pm ET

What an arrogant man you are.
Can you please count your accomplishments other than yapping on CNN.
I am not Palin’s fan, but you how dare you, who do you think you are?
At least she had the guts to run for something she believed in and did a lot of good for her state.
she didn’t hide behind CNN and just watched and yap like you, she made it happen and her approval rating was 86 percent.

I feel sorry for people like you. Your are so judgmental and shallow that you can’t accept anyone if it is not from the same circle.

Cynthia - Arkansas   August 14th, 2009 8:01 pm ET

She's a WHOLE whack job! She has done nothing but stir up hate and a lie comes out of her mouth every time it opens. Do her devoted followers not care that she lies constantly? I don't get it.

Her and Rush are the most dangerous people in America. They only appeal to the least educated and get them ginned up. They are carrying guns now. I find that truly disturbing.

I pray to God that nothing happens to my President. I pray daily that angels will surround him and keep him safe. All of those who wish him harm will have to answer before God someday. I'm glad I'm not them. No true Christian would ever act like the poser, Sarah Palin.

Sheryl From Michigan   August 14th, 2009 7:58 pm ET

Mr. Begala is absolutely correct in his assessment of Sarah Palin. She is nothing but fodder for late night comedy shows. She has the intellect of a gnat and she is also a really nasty liar. Just another fine example of the "christian" right. Lie, cheat and steal....Then hide behind their bibles. You betcha by golly for sure also!!

Truth-Bomb Thrower   August 14th, 2009 7:58 pm ET

I love how CNN tries to make it's own pundits and reporters the news. I guess it's easier than going out and finding REAL news. WHO CARES WHAT THIS POLITICAL GROUPIE THINKS?!

alvino   August 14th, 2009 7:57 pm ET

Begala is half right in calling her 'half a whack job.' She is a complete whack job. She does a great job making things up, though.

Sean   August 14th, 2009 7:55 pm ET

I'm not necessarily a big fan of Begala, but I wish more people would have the guts to just come right out and call a spade a spade in the case of people like Palin. She is an idiot, plain and simple. She accuses Obama of "palling around with terrorists", then stands by as attendees of her rallies shout "kill him" about Obama, then she says that the news media should "stop makin' stuff up", goes on to push the ridiculous myth of "death panels", and then makes a statement about how we need to have a more mature political discourse in this country. Seriously Palin? Although it does seem that congratulations are in order – she has managed to become the voice of the dumbest people in our society, so I suppose that's an accomplishment of sorts.

ck   August 14th, 2009 7:55 pm ET

LOL... Palin stepped down, yet CNN and all the liberals keep hounding and harassing her family as well as her.

Me thinks the liberals are very afraid of her for some reason...hmmm what could that be?? Plus, picking on her family... typical cowards, pick on the weak ones.

ROFL

New Yorker   August 14th, 2009 7:53 pm ET

She may be "flaky and an intellectual lightweight" but she would still make a better president than Obama or any other liberal Democrat. Principles and policies are what matters – not eloquence. At least she would advocate for LESS government and a return to our Constitution. Obama and his "change" will destroy this country.

We need more speaking the truth about Palin so, hopefully, she will go away... forever!

Chad   August 14th, 2009 7:50 pm ET

I am sorry to hear that Mr. Begala has had to resort to such comments. Just another example of the liberal media attacking a real person in politics.

I am hate to say it Mr. Begala but I imagine your just upset that someone who doesn't match your ideal of a politician is getting so much attention and that you can only get some by making remarks like those.

Do us all a favor and get a real job because the one your pretending fill is clearly not working for you.

charlie in Maine   August 14th, 2009 7:50 pm ET

Are you so hapy that the Dems are in power that you are pulling punches? Can't blame you I haven't had a cross word for George W in 8 months.

But come on Paul, you and I both know the truth:

She's a TOTAL whack-job!

A Paul Begala quote......Oh my.....
Talk about a soulless, shameless political hack
This guy hasn't had an opinion of his own since the Carter administration

DEB   August 14th, 2009 7:48 pm ET

I think it is clear to the american people that Sarah Palin is a pain and talks out of her backside!
Even her press announcement stating that she was stepping down as governor, she sounded like a turkey with her head cut off... gobble gobble is all that could be made of the thoughts she was trying to get out. She and many of her cronies are not to be believed due to her rhetoric and lies of death panels.
How dare she suggest that this country would kill the disabled or elderly.
BTW, didn't she encourage her son to join the USMC, now that is a killing panel

Jonah Hex   August 14th, 2009 7:48 pm ET

Begala's a slimeball. And if Palin is as stupid as he says she is, then why are Obama and the Democrats arguing with her through her Facebook page? And why did the Senate Finance Committee suddenly announce that it was dropping "death panel" language from its version of the bill, which the Democrats previously said was a myth. Looks to me like Sarah Palin is smarter than all of those hacks combined. Heck, all of the usual pundits and cable chatterers said she was finished after July 3, BUT here she is changing the terms of the National debate, and in the GOP's favor. So who're the real intellectual light weights?

Four and The Door   August 14th, 2009 7:47 pm ET

He must have forgotten how she tore Biden up in the VP debate. As Jim Croce would put it, Joe looked like a jigsaw puzzle with a couple of pieces gone. Democrats tried to spin it the other way, but that was pitiful.

So go ahead and underestimate Sarah Palin at your own peril. As far as Wack Jobs, nobody can compete with your very own Secratary Clinton. My gosh she's getting scary.

Bill   August 14th, 2009 7:47 pm ET

Thank you Mr. Begala for not giving an inch and conceding any of Sarah Palin's nuttiness as legitimate. While I can understand conservative principles and accept their legitimacy (although I disagree with them), Palin has proven repeatedly that she is simply a right wing nut job. It is imperative that she be recognized as such, as her views are not only crazy, they also incite the hatred that exists on the fringe right.

m smith   August 14th, 2009 7:47 pm ET

We have this not so bright journalits major spouting off about health care a subject she apparently knows nothing about. Does this broad know anything about anything? Read the material on health care people and stop luistening to these nut jobs. She is a riot incitor and would yell fire in a crowd.

Idiot_Pelosi   August 14th, 2009 7:46 pm ET

This sissy has his head so far up his "you know what", that its laughable anytime this fool shows up on TV.

annie for Palin   August 14th, 2009 7:45 pm ET

begayla should know – he is a WHOLE WHACH JOB! If anyone is an intellectual lightweight, it is all of the non-journalist and pund-nuts on cnn and msnbc. I think it is amusing the way demon-crats and obamanuts keep up with the cruel remarks about her. Lighten up little boys and big old ugly witches she doesn't even hold an office now. Also I think it is funny the way conservatives and repubbies like her being out there speaking the TRUTH when none of them can find the gonads to speak out! As far as going toe-to-toe with obama – any of those little old citizens going to town hall meetings could make him look like the fool that he is even if he had a dozen teleprompters. The only truth he has ever spoke was that FED-X & UPS work well but government operated post office is a peice of crap.

Mike Mundy, Houston, TX   August 14th, 2009 7:43 pm ET

Sarah Palin is a disease which believes the world is only four thousand years old and fossils are the work of the Devil

C W   August 14th, 2009 7:40 pm ET

Palin doesn't have "rock sold principles" – she is:

- A liar (saying the proposed health care reform includes "death panels" when it does no such thing)
- A quitter (resigning her governorship with 1.5 years to go)
- A thief (taking Alaska per diem money when she was living in her own house)

With principles like those ...

Idiot_Pelosi   August 14th, 2009 7:37 pm ET

So what, I call OBAMA a TOTAL WHACK JOB......

Paul, you're such a sissy. It would be funny to watch Sarah kick your rear end.

Sahra couldn't go toe to toe with a bowl of jello. Get real

carowe   August 14th, 2009 7:34 pm ET

"Rock solid principles?" I suppose if you exclude honesty (which she lacks, as shown by the lies she continues to cling to in the face of facts), integrity (as demonstrated by all the questionable spending she did at the expense of the State of Alaska), judgement (as shown by her dragging her offspring onto the political stage and airing the family's issues only then to complain about their place in the spotlight) and commitment (as shown by her unwillingness to finish the job she was elected to do, once it became clear that her book deals and 'speaking' engagments would be more lucrative), then – yeah, if you exclude these things perhaps she has some kind of principles, but none that are relevant to someone trying to masquerade as a leadership candidate. We already know intelligence isn't a factor but then that isn't really a principle per se, it's just one of the qualities she lacks.

deercreek4444   August 14th, 2009 7:34 pm ET

Looks to me Paul Begala is the whack job!!!!She has more common sense in her little finger than Begala has in that brain of his...

Even the conservative journalist lauded Palin's "principles," not her intellect. The emperor has no clothes and everyone knows it.

MJ   August 14th, 2009 7:27 pm ET

Sarah Palin go toe to toe with Obama is the funniest thing I've ever heard. When comedians don't have to make up material to make fun of you...they just repeat yours that's a sign that you are kinda dumb. Conservatives need to get an agenda that involves solutions instead of lies and misdirection. They have no real solutions....just Sarah Palin

WHAAA??   August 14th, 2009 7:27 pm ET

I love it that Repubs have been brain-washed to think she has got what it takes. It's just plain ole funny. She's a quitter when it comes to the real job.

Edgar   August 14th, 2009 7:26 pm ET

If she is so irrelevant or crazy, why are the Dems so scared of Sarah Palin? And I disagree, this week she proved that she can go toe-to-toe with anyone–and that includes Obama! (ie. health care debate)

Jason   August 14th, 2009 7:25 pm ET

Paul Begala is DA MAN! Love ya bro :)

Claudia in Houson   August 14th, 2009 7:25 pm ET

Palin over and over again has proven to be an embarrassment to the Republican party. Something is seriously wrong with this woman who can't take a hint from her own party that she just isn't qualified. You'd think she'd be spending her days preparing herself by going back to school to get a law degree or something but she appears to be intellectually lazy and thinks she can just talk and walk her way into Washington. Palin may have done it in Alaska, which was proven to be a mistake, but she can't do it in Washington there's just too many scholars with intellectual achievements who don't want an uneducated Palin or her high school diploma husband around.

Doug   August 14th, 2009 7:24 pm ET

This is the same contributor that gave the President an A- on the show for his report card. If, Sarah Palin is not really news, why is he trying to destroy her once and for all? Is it because she will soon be coming to replace the current status quo commentators on shows like this on the airwaves? As an Obama democrat, I want to hear what she has to say and make up my own mind about my future.

Jon   August 14th, 2009 7:23 pm ET

FIghtTheSmears   August 14th, 2009 7:22 pm ET

Gee, Paul. Where was your hatred and outrage when Palin was running for Governor back in 2006? Oh, that's right, she wasn't a political threat to the left then. I see.
