(CNN) - Former Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorina is taking the initial steps to challenge California Democrat Barbara Boxer for her Senate seat, a move that could lay the groundwork for one of the most high profile and expensive contests of 2010.
Fiorina, the first woman to lead a Fortune 500 company and a former surrogate for John McCain's presidential bid, filed a tax identification number and registered a campaign committee with the IRS Tuesday called "Carly for California."
"The people of California have serious concerns about job creation, economic growth and the role of government in solving problems that touch each of ourlives," Fiorina said in a statement. "I have received a great deal of encouragement to make a run for the Senate in 2010 from people across the political spectrum because these are all issues that need focused attention in Washington, D.C."
Under the new committee, Fiorina will begin to aggressively raise money as well as speak with policy experts and campaign advisors, spokeswoman Beth Miller told CNN.
Boxer's campaign coffers are already loaded: the three-term senator's latest filing with the Federal Elections Commission shows she raised well over $2 million during the first half of the year and has close to $5.5 million cash on hand.
Though Fiorina does not have a set timetable to formally announce a Senate bid, Miller said the former Hewlett-Packard CEO's window to make a decision is only a couple of months given a GOP primary is set for next June.
A former economic adviser and visible presence on cable news, Fiorina was largely sidelined from public appearances from the McCain campaign after telling an interviewer she didn't think either member of the GOP presidential ticket was qualified to run a major company.
Democrats wasted little time in attacking Fiorina's latest move.
“This is a person who was fired from Hewlett Packard for running the company into the ground, fired from the McCain Presidential Campaign for incompetence, and now thinks the people of California are going to hire her," said Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee spokesman Eric Schultz.
Should she ultimately jump into the Senate race, Fiorina would be the second high-profile former CEO running for statewide office in California. Former e-Bay CEO Meg Whitman announced last month she was exploring a run for California governor.
"Boxer shorts" has ignored the voices of California and allowed her ego and party politics to guid her.
I think this should awaken her from her "party-line politics" but it could be too late for her.
At least it might decrease her inflated ego....momentarily!
Isn't that right, "Maam?"
ANOTHER MILLIONAIR politician who has NO CLUE what it's like to be a strugling American.
JUST WHAT WE NEED!
I'm not necessarily sold on Carly, but I do know Barbara Boxer is not doing JACK for the people of California and is about useless. Time for her to go home, but you can say that about most of the folks in Washington.
Looks like Barbara Boxer will be easily reelected. this woman ran HP into the ground, she couldn't run a Brownie's troup.
She was correct when she said that neither McCain nor Palin was qualified to run a major company. But neither was she! She burned HP into the ground with that disasterous Compaq merger. And she's asking people to vote for her as a Senator when our country (and the state of California) face so many financial problems?
No, no, and no.
It's time for Boxer to go. Only in California would she be able to get elected in the first place.
I've only ever just heard of her as a miserable failure in the corporate world... weird that she would be running for senator when all of that will be brought up again. She must be an egomaniac or she'd be chastened by her own failure.
Is it more money than brains?
You crazy libs crack me up. She ran HP into the ground? Why don't you try checking some facts before you start flapping your mouthes....Borrowing all of your talking points from the hyper biased irresponsible journalism of CNN doesn't make you sounds smart...it makes you look like a bunch loons.
Please do not allow Carly Fiorina to win a Senate seat. She ran HP and Agilent into the ground. My dad lost his job because of her and he had been there for over 25 years.
Excuse me Maa'm, err sir, Ms. Boxer, my bad, i'll just call you Babs.
Look forward to seeing you lose to this totally more qualified WOMAN who isn't an extremist as you obviously are school you on how to act like a professional.
A few Governorships here and there, a few Senators over there and we have a whole new paradigm (ball game for you Obama voters).
CNN, where is the story on the discovery of who did the Obama joker posters, oops my bad, he is a muslim leftist who likes Obama's foreign policy, but not his socialist agenda. I apologize.
How about the story that ALL 50 states now have MORE Conservatives than Democrats, oopsy, Barry "aint" going to be happy about this.
2010, we take back OUR Country, you can keep the change.
An East Coaster, I must plead ignorance on Boxer's. But also as an East coaster (NJ), I'm more than familiar with the way Fiorina decimated Lucent Technologies...moved on to HP to leave that virtually destroyed with the Caompaq merger...and we all know about that whopping success called the McCain presidential campaign. Good luck, people of California.
Boxer wants to give your jobs to legal and illegal immigrants and spend your tax money on illegal immigrants! I would take a CEO of a major company over Senator Boxer anyday. And yes, I have a stake in this since my oldest son lives in California and knows how liberal, not moderate the democrats in California are.
Fiorina stepped down from Hewlett-Packard in 2005, with the company stating that Fiorina had put in place "a plan that has given HP the capabilities to compete and win."...that quote is directly from a press release from when Fiorina VOLUNTARILY stepped down from HP, shortly after successfully merging with Compaq.
Don't care for either one of them. Talk about the lesser of two evils!
You go girl!!! California is the poster child for what Obama wants to do to the rest of the country. For years Californians never saw a tax they didn't like and big government was always in favor...fast track to 2009 and look at what good it did them. Now they are actually voting down taxes and big government. The amazing part is Liberals in Congress and around America still think this is the way to govern the nation.
Obama has awakened a sleeping giant (mainstream America) and we are sick and tired of huge government and waste. We want to take back America and the first step is to boot Boxer out of office.
Boxer is just fine thank you. She protects the environment from those who would rape the earth for their own profit. She's also got more balls than Fiorina and her husband combined. She's also got seniority in the Senate. Something very useful to us in California.
If you want to live in a state where the land is raped and the rich get richer on the backs of the poor and the immigrant, please move to Texas. All of their politicians are republicans. You'll have a great time there.
I'm pretty sure Boxer won't receive the Black Chamber of Commerce endorsement.
I don't even live in California but I will do whatever I can to support Fiorina. That horror show that California has sent to the U.S. House and Senate is a curse on the entire country.
Where do I send the checks?
She did pretty well for herself. Fail as a leader...walk away with lots of clams...and she didn't even have to parade her family on national tv or play the Pageant Bikini Victim Princess to rake in said clams. All she did was make sure that when my printer broke, I had to go out and buy a new one because the rep. on the phone talking to me from India said that the model I had bought 3 months before isn't even made anymore.
Barbara needs to lace up the mitts and throw hands.
Isn't she the one who ran HP into the ground?
Please, Fiorina. The last thing we need is another foot-in-mouth politician, who has demonstrated incompetence at running business and PR.
HP and its employees surely derserved better.
Boxer does need to go...but not bad enough to elect a failed CEO with ethics violations!
Fiorina is going to do the same thing to the California GOP that she did to HP: Reduce its leadership to pack of terrified back-stabbing children, make a bunch of unilateral decisions that eliminate their remaining capitol, amass a mountain of debt, destroy their credibility and then blame everybody but herself.
And because she is so efficient, she can probably get all of that done before the end of the primary!
