Perry fires back in Texas GOP gov battle

Texas Gov. Rick Perry fired back at Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison on Tuesday.
Texas Gov. Rick Perry fired back at Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison on Tuesday.

(CNN) – One day after Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison formally challenged him for his job, Texas Gov. Rick Perry fired back.

"I understand the senator's been in Washington for 16 years, and she may not have a grasp of what's going on in the state of Texas. She may not know or understand the progress we've made in this state," Perry said at a news conference Tuesday in Austin, Texas.

Hutchison officially announced her bid for Texas governor Monday, The move pitted her against Perry, a fellow Republican, and sparked what could be a bitter intra-party fight in the Lone Star State. As she kicked off a five-day, 19-stop "Texas Can Do Better" tour, the four-term U.S. senator slammed Perry's years in office for what she calls arrogance and mistakes, and she said "he's trying to stay too long - 14 years, maybe longer."

Perry took over as Texas governor in late 2000, after then-Gov. George W. Bush stepped down to serve as president. Perry won election to a full term in 2002, and was re-elected four years later.

Perry said Tuesday he's "pretty proud of what we've done here in Texas. This is a low tax state" - and gave a taste of how he plans to run in a primary battle against Hutchison.

"This is pretty simple to me. This is going to be Washington versus Texas. Does Washington have the best answers or does Texas have the best answers," Perry told reporters.

Hutchison says she'll give up her Senate seat later this year to focus solely on the governor's race.

This same pubnacious Perry was clamoring for separation of TX from the union along w/ another clown-Chuck Norris-once upon a time. He is bankin' on public memory which is notoriously short.

This Perry guy is a complete whack job, however, Texas seems to be doing relatively well economically.

Being a Texan, I don't *mind* Perry. He's OK, nothing special, but not anything to crow about.

However, I'm more in favor of term limits than I am in favor of any one politician, Perry included.

    You've done you time, bub.
    You've served your state.
It's time to look for work in the private sector.

Perry is so out of touch with reality. He talks out of both sides of his mouth. One side says he wants nothing to do with Washington DC, well the other side excepts the money. Texas receives the highest per ca pita return on tax dollars then any other state in the union. Kay Bailey Hutchison is one of the most hard working persons in DC. I would support her for any office that she seeks.

Even by Republican standards, Perry is an embarassment. Heck, by TEXAS Republican standards, Perry is an embarassment, and that is really saying something.

Hutchison is much further to the right than I am, but at least she doesn't appear to be a total idiot, and I don't think she has advocated seceding from the USA. That's about all you can ask from the GOP these days.

    Go get him Kay!

  7. Thank You President Obama!

Isn't this the clown that thinks Texas should succeed from the US? Real patriotic there gov'ner. Luckily for you most of the 'base' (uneducated, ignorant republicans) live there so you should have no problem getting elected.

You can always tell a Texan

You just can't tell him much

Now that the Bible is part of TX public school curricula, they can take their rightful place as 50th in education.

If they don't secede soon, we will have to throw them out. Then there will be NO Red states with people in them.

Perry had his day. Now it's time for him to stand aside. He once

said illegal aliens were "no problem" for his state. He had his

day and now it's Kay's turn.

Um, could we have a different option than just Republicans here in Texas? I can't stand Perry, but I'm not sure that Hutchison is the answer.

I most certainly do not consider myself a conservative. In fact, I wouldn't vote for either of these people. However, Rick Perry is a crazy social conservative who doesn't value the rights of the average citizen, and he has proven to me that he's more concerned with turning profits for big business than he is the citizens of Texas.

I'll take K-baby any day of the week over Rick Perry, who has sickened me every time I hear about him in the news.

i'm a Texas girl and I am mad at that Rick Perry declined the UI stimulus funds. Our UI trust has officially run out of funds.
California is broke. Michigan is broke. Texas is next to be broke because of this jerk. He had the audacity to support the idiots who suggested that Texas secede from the Union. What kind of a leader does that?
RICK PERRY: YOU ARE A JOKE AND I CANNOT STAND YOUR POLITICS!

    REPUBLICANS ARE THE AMERICAN TALIBAN.

This guy is denser than sunbaked mud: "She may not know or understand the progress we've made in this state," Perry said at a news conference Tuesday in Austin, Texas. Progress in Texas, you say?! Well maybe he's right, maybe she doesn't know the proud progress that has been made towards TX's successin from the Union! Maybe she doesn't realize that the biggest embarrassment in a generation came out of the TX governorship in 2000 and ruined our country. Maybe she doesn't know about TX's below-average showing in almost everything Americans hold dear (e.g. education, culture..). And maybe she doesn't understand how proud Texans have been to have elected and hosted one of the most corupting influences in Congress ever, before he had to resign with his tail between his legs. This guy is just spewing more rightwing delusion and hypocrisy, this time at one of his own!

As a life-long Republican, I've had enough of Perry. He's for tolling every new road built so his cronies can line there pockets. He says that Texas can secede from the United States. He's a right-wing loon and he needs to be shown the door!

How about neither of them have the best answers for Texas? Kay Bailey is my Senator, although I have consistently voted against her. I've also consistently voted against Perry. Don't think he will live down his secesionist comments during the Presidential election.

I would be happy to see some moderate Republicans (are there any still out there?) and some strong Democrats run this time and give us a REAL choice.

"She may not know or understand the progress we've made in this state,"

Hehehe. For some reason the first thing that came to mind was Chuck Norris' talk of leading Texas, post-secession. Now THAT....is progress you can talk about!!!
