WASHINGTON (CNN) - Sen. Ben Cardin's nephew apologized Wednesday for going a bit, well, overboard, for proposing to future wife with a staged police search on his boat in Baltimore's Inner Harbor.
On August 7, Jon S. Cardin, a Maryland delegate, reportedly organized a boat ride with some friends and his now fiancee in the Inner Harbor in Baltimore. With a helicopter hovering overhead and marine police searching the boat, Cardin popped the question.
Cardin said said he had asked the police to do the "routine five-minute safety check." He said he will contact the Baltimore City Police Department and reimburse them for any costs incurred.
"During the evening, I was focused on making my fiancee's night perfect," Cardin said in a statement posted on his Web site. "In retrospect I should have considered that city resources would be involved and used better judgment to put a stop to it."
She said yes.

It's Political because he (Jon S. Cardin) is a duly elected Maryland Delegate.
It has nothing to do with his Uncle.
It is Sen. Cardin's nephew, who just happens to be a Delegate in the Maryland State House. It's a classic case of a politician who believes he's above the law. I love how a lot of you find this to be no big deal; however, if it was a Republican who did this you'd want his head on a platter. I think the Baltimore Police Department had more important matters to attend to that day/night.
I think it was pretty clever!! Congrats to you and your bride to be!!
While some of you are still on the "blame Bush" kick, No way can anyone blame the Senator! Just send the romantic a bill with a warning and let's all go back to living our lives!
Why is this such a big deal so what he went over the top, I am sure that there was more to the story then the public is being told. As long as Jon pays back the city for what he did it is not that big of a deal. Get over it people
Do they think the public smiles on stunts like this? If we rounded up all the wasted funds for stunts like this we could feed half the country. He should reimburse any charges. While they are doing a fly over some criminal is going about his business. THINK PEOPLE!!!!
It makes me wonder what his other choices for "romantic" might have been. "MMM...maybe I'll have some of my buddies beat up a homeless man in front of her and THEN I'll get down on one knee....No, wait, maybe I can stage a fiery car crash and as the bodies burn, I will drop to one knee..."
Here's a hint for his fiance: For your anniversary, ask for gift cards. Don't let this man try to think of anything else on his own.
If my fiance proposed via a police raid, I'd have some serious thoughts about saying 'yes'!
Lighten up people! It was not a good idea but when you let the current situation rob you of all the joy in life, it only makes life so much harder. The good news is that she said yes! Congrats!
Will he go to that much preparation if there is a divorce later?
This story doesn't make sense to me. What were the police supposed to do, find the ring during the search or something? I don't get it. What if these policepeople were needed for a legitimate emergency during this time? Was it a police helicopter that was hovering around? And what does he mean by "put a stop to it"...he's the one who started it. The police should have known better!
Sounds like a good trip...
WE THE PEOPLE – hold the power.
To me, this is the EXACT sort of thing these folks "dont consider" – all the time!
Let's not just MAKE AN EXAMPLE OF HIM – let's start firing EVERY person who misuses funds...the "im paying it back" thing is akin to stealing, getting caught and saying "well, here's the money for the product"...theives go to jail, the least that should happen here is this fool loses his JOB!
Don't the police have anything better to do in Baltimore? Aren't there actual crimes being committed?
Just proves: you can pay your way around the law in America! I wonder how many people were robbed/raped/murdered in Baltimore in the time it took to organize and pull off this stunt. All the policemen involved need to be replaced, perhaps with ones that do their JOB we're paying them for!
What the heck is so romantic and special about the police raiding your boat????? The things men think are romantic!!! LOL Geez!
Almost reminds me of the time President Bush delayed the return of thousands of sailors to set up a multi-million dollar (your tax money) photo-op on the USS Lincoln, declaring 'Mission Accomplished.'
should be arrested and pay expenses and big fine.and far as her say yes ,who gives a .....
Who cares?
you never spend money as wisely as you would your own.
OMG... she said yes!
What kind of a lady considers a "police raid" to be romantic??
Come on....how often does this kind of abuse go on and no one ever knows unless they get caught. Look at the Carolina Gov. using police SUVs to go on camping trips and charging the public for his sex trips to south america. These people are elite entitlists and this happens everyday and they could care less. it's special little club our elected officials belong to. We the Sheeple are abused like slaves.
Another shady Republican family in the deep south that needs to be REMOVED from power!
Another liar. Wouldn't have said anything if not caught.
Congratulations– now pay the bill.
The citizens and most Americans are happy for the couple, but we are in a financial crisis. Every little bit counts. If he doesn't pay the bill, the taxpayers will have to. He should start doing the math now, because there will be a lot more bills to calculate, after he's married.
